7-year-old Oldenburg, completed the course in 32.430 seconds.
Kristi Smith, of Rockport, MA, riding Jennieta, owned by
Knights Fork Inc had the fastest jump-off time until Welles
and Aziza, but they were bumped to second with a jump-off
time of 32.671. Michael Dorman of Jamison, PA, riding Femalin,
owned by Caroline Lloyd was third with a jump-off time of

Potomac
Horse Fever Fatality in Kentucky
Reported by: Stephanie L. Church, News Editor, The Horse
Magazine; TheHorse.com
LEXINGTON, Ky.-- A Thoroughbred filly in Central Kentucky
recently succumbed to Potomac horse fever (PHF), a disease
that is detected only once or twice per year in the Commonwealth.
The cause of death was a mystery until test results were
received from the University of Kentucky Livestock Disease
Diagnostic Center (LDDC) on June 27.
Potomac
horse fever first hit the horse industry in the mid-1980s
with an outbreak in the Potomac River area of Maryland.
Researchers were able to link the causative agent (a bacteria
named Ehrlichia risticii, which has been re-named Neoriketssia
risticii) to parasites of freshwater snails. Scientists
at the University of California, Davis, were able to complete
the natural transmission cycle of PHF in 2000 when they
found that the bacteria infects the larvae of mayflies and
caddis flies in fresh water. The larvae then mature into
adult flies and are ingested by horses when they inadvertently
consume the insects while grazing or in feed. Horses kept
near fresh-water streams or ponds are more likely to be
at risk for getting the disease. The Kentucky filly was
kept on a farm with several small streams and a pond.

7 - 11 August 2002
The Royal Dublin Society has increased the prize money
at the 2002 Kerrygold Horse Show by 12 per cent in

competitors.
The
richest competition at the Show, the Kerrygold International
Grand Prix, will have a total prize fund of €96,000
an increase of €13,000 over 2001, ranking the
competition as one of the most lucrative on the European
jumping circuit. The winner will take home €32,000.
Prize
money for the Kerrygold Classic has increased by €8,400
to €15,000 and the Kerrygold Speed Championship

Kerrygold Six Bar, which replaces the Kerrygold Relay
has increased by €5,000 to €11,500..

Federico
Sztyrle Wins the $35,000 Otter Creek Grand Prix Sponsored
by Hand Motors At the Vermont Summer Festival Horse Show
East
Dorset, VTJuly 21, 2002Federico Sztyrle of Bridgehampton,
NY, won the $35,000 Otter Creek Grand Prix, sponsored by
Hand Motors, on Sunday at the Vermont Summer Festival Horse
Show held at Harold Beebe Farm in East Dorset, VT. Sztyrle
won riding Caya, owned by Sag Pond Farm. Peter Lutz of Katonah,
NY, and Maroline, owned by Coker Farm, was second, and Ken
Berkley of Flemington, NJ, aboard Laredo, owned by Rivers
Edge, came in third.
Sztyrle (pronounced steer-lay) kept the crowd in suspense
as he was the last to go in the jump-off of eight. Robert
Ross and Galiana, owned by Joe Zada and Romance Farm, were
the first to go in the jump-off and went clean in a time
of 39.394 seconds. Then Lutz, riding Maroline, immediately
took over the lead with a faultless round in a time of 35.688
seconds. Ken Berkley of Flemington, NJ, was unsuccessful
at beating the time with the two mounts he had in the jump-off.
Berkley and Laredo tried to repeat their Grand Prix winning
performance from Week One in Vermont, but went too slow
in a time of 36.064 seconds. Berkleys other entry,
Kontiki, owned by Rivers Edge & Karen Long Dwight, also
went clear, but at a slower time of 37.846 seconds, which
gave them a fourth place finish.

Take
Great Photos of Horses
Reprinted
with permission from the New York Institute of Photography
website at <http://www.nyip.com>
Learn
why you should photograph horses and how to capture their
majestic mobility and stately air, and much more in a three
part series of articles brought to you by New York Institute
of Photography (NYI), America's oldest and largest photography
school.
In Part 1 of NYI's series on EQUINE PHOTOGRAPHY, NYI writer,
Lauren Ragland, takes you to the beginning of horse photography
starting with Eadweard Muybridge. Yes, he just happened
to be the first person to capture a horse galloping on film.
Then, she looks at how to photograph the dashing animals
either speeding around a racetrack or poised and grazing
in a field. For those who like to get down and dirty, Lauren
takes you to the rodeo where rearing and steering is no
laughing matter.
Lighting is one of the most important aspects to consider
when photographing animals. For horses, in the early morning
or late afternoon, according to NYI, is when the bright
sun wont cast unflattering shadows over the subject.
Is your subject most comfortable inside or out? Its
best to keep your model in their comfortable environment.
NYI
will also show you how to take pictures suitable for a glossy
equine magazine or for a portrait-sized frame. Learn from
which angle to capture the horses. What are the standard
shots and the inventive angles? How much of the horse should
you get in the frame? And how many horses should you capture?
Which ones do you exclude? NYI's series on Equine Photography
will answer all these questions and more!

Canadians
Capture Catskills III Grand Prix
Horse
Shows In The Sun presented its third Grand Prix show
jumping event of the Catskills series on Sunday. The
$75,000 class was the highlight of five days of showing
at Kelly Farms in Ellenville, NY.
|
It
was Canadas day as Canadian Olympic veteran Mario
Deslauriers topped a field of twenty-five riders to capture
first place in the $75,000 Rio Vista Grand Prix. Keean White,
an up and coming young rider, also from Canada, took second
place. Danny Foster of Ontario, Canada designed the course.
Danny was the individual winner of a Pan American Gold Medal,
and he is the current Chef dequipe of the Canadian
Team. The Canadian presence was also felt in June when Canadas
seven-time Olympian Ian Millar won the second of the Catskills
Grand Prix.
Twenty-five
horse and rider combinations competed over Danny Fosters
first round course. Following the class, Foster noted that
the field consisted of several young horses together with
seasoned campaigners. Therefore his goal was to design a
fair yet demanding course that would encourage the inexperienced
entries, while still meeting the standards of a $75,000
class matching the prestige of competition in the Catskills.

World Equestrian Games, Lauren Hough and her Sydney
Olympic mount, Clasiko, lead a field of thirty-eight
horse-and-rider combinations with a total score of
four faults. The first three trials to select the

to be held in Jerez, Spain this September ran July

|
Hough

Trial #2, Houghs score of four faults over the first
three trials puts her in first place going into the final
three trials which will take place at the Oaks Blenheim
International CSI-A, July 26 and 28.
Posting
clear scores in Selection Trial #1 and Selection Trial #3
was Ray Texel on Lexicon. Texel finished with five faults

All
Breed Event
A
horse is a horse, of course. But, a traditional division
among the various breeds of horses and the people who work
with them has developed over the years, keeping networking
between all horse people to a minimum.
Can-Am Equine is attempting to break down these barriers
by offering an All Breeds Equine Emporium March 13 through
16, 2003 at London's Western Fair Grounds. Seize this rare
opportunity to hear guest speakers from across North America
addressing major topics concerning the equine industry.
"I think there'll be something for everyone there."
Says Dr. Ken Armstrong, executive director of the Equine
Research Centre (ERC) at the University of Guelph. Proceeds
from the event will aid equine research.

100%
sure: European Championship in San Patrignano
During the 6th edition of the "Challenge Vincenzo Muccioli"
in San Patrignano, a meeting among the members of the FEI
Jumping Commission took place with the purpose of evaluating
the candidature of the Community to the 2005 European Championship
and verify its organizational skills and facilities.
The meeting was attended by Max Amman, the Swiss director
of the FEI World Championship and Mr. John Roche, from Ireland,
director of the FEI jumping departement.
When the meeting was over, Mr. Amman declared to the Italian
newspaper Corriere della Sera "European Championships
are very different by international championships. A bigger
number of riders is involved, a higher participation of
the public, more journalists and several days of competition.
Appropriate structures and specifical facilities are requested
for such an important event and a lot of work needs to be
done in this view. The final decision will be communicated
in Mosca in November" he added "however I am 100%
sure that the European Championships will take place in
San Patrignano, maybe 99,9%, to be on the safe side".

Irish
Horses Do Well In Colorado
The
Irish Sport Horse Castaway Lad impresses at High Prairie's
$75,000 Grand Prix.
7/20/02 Parker CO. Cara Anthony was in Colorado only
one day and earned the respect of the Grand prix jumping
world when she placed fifth at the High Prairie Grand
Prix. Anthony drove in from Spruce Meadow to compete
in the event before heading off for a Grand Prix in
Cincinnati. Castaway Lad was one of only five horses
to not knock down a rail in the difficult event. Unfortunately
a quarter time fault kept her out of the jump off.
Anthony's Castaway Lad is a son of Clover Hill out
of a mare named Cloe Two. Anthony imported Castaway
Lad with the help of Dermot Forde of Ireland. Unfortunately
for the Irish Horse World once again there was no
recognition for Castaway Lad as an Irish Horse. Anthony
said she gave the announcers a bio of the horse, but
the announcers didn't read it. Nearly all of the other
30 horses in the Grand Prix received recognition of
their breed.

Rascals
and Racehorses: A Sporting Mans Life
Lexington,
KY (July 22, 2002) Gangsters and gin drinkers, midgets and
touts, mysterious clockers and champion Thoroughbreds race
through the pages of W. Cothran Campbells newest tribute
to the Sport of Kings RASCALS AND RACEHORSES: A SPORTING
MANS LIFE.
With
a Runyonesque flavor, Campbell spins tales of old-time horsemen
such as trainers Ben and Jimmy Jones, Hall of Fame jockey
Eddie Arcaro, and Spendthrift Farm master Leslie Combs.
Campbell also weaves witty and candid stories of his own
experiences and escapades. He tells of being a chubby boy
showing horses before jeering spectators; enlisting his
drinking buddies help in finding three cars misplaced
within thirty-six hours during his pre-Alcoholics Anonymous
days; and being among a gentrified racing crowd that witnessed
a wolfhound show his amour for a Russian ambassadors
fur coat.
Campbell
manages to unearth the humor and foibles both of himself
and of an industry few people experience behind the scenes.

happy - declared Garcia just before going to receive

like winning at home. In this community I spent the
best years of my life. In the early nineties I rode
a long time for San Patrignano's Jumping Team and
thanks to the trust Vincenzo accorded to me I started
my real professional career. With Vincenzo I had a

with him we started the project which brought San
