Two
Weeks of Equestrian Activity Highlight Summer in Lake Placid,
NY
Lake
Placid, NY—July 22, 2002—A week of competition at the
25th annual I Love New York Horse Show, July 3-7, following a
week of competition at the 33rd annual Lake Placid Horse Show,
June 26-30, capped off two weeks of equestrian competition at
the North Elba Show Grounds in Lake Placid, NY. In the serene
mountain setting of Lake Placid, the horse shows featured more
than 1,000 horses competing each week for more than $360,00 in
prize money in one of the nation’s largest hunter-jumper
horse show competitions.
$50,000
Budweiser Grand Prix of Lake Placid Presented by Jaguar/Land Rover
Mark Leone of Oakland, NJ took top honors in the $50,000 Budweiser
Grand Prix of Lake Placid Presented by Jaguar/Land Rover for the
Whitney Perpetual Challenge Trophy. The grand prix, which was
showcased in the Grand Prix Field at the North Elba Show Grounds,
had a start list of 38 horse-and-rider combinations. The sixteen
jump first round proved difficult as only five combinations managed
to qualify for the jump-off round where faults were converted
into penalty seconds.
David
Raposa of Clinton, NY riding Master Man was the first to challenge
the 9-jump jump-off course. Raposa turned in a clear round with
a time of 56.769 seconds. Next to tackle to course was defending
champion Margie Goldstein-Engle of Wellington, FL and Hidden Creek’s
Jones. Engle turned in what would be the tiebreaker’s fastest
time, 41.411 seconds, but a rail down at fence 7 added four penalty
seconds for a final score of 45.411. The penalty proved costly
when Leone mastered the course without penalty in 41.461 seconds
on Pinkata de Longpre. His penalty-free ride held up for the win
with Engle, the number-two ranked rider on the U.S. Equestrian
Team (USET) Show Jumping Rider List, placing second. Danielle
Torano of Ft. Lauderdale, FL finished third with a score of 55.317
on Lancier 4 while Raposa finished fourth.
Other
Lake Placid Horse Show Competition
In addition to the AGA Grandprix Series event, other events such
as North American League (NAL) classes, Adult/Children's Jumper
events and Show Jumping Hall of Fame Jumper Classic series events
for junior riders and amateur/owner riders were also featured
during the first week’s Lake Placid Horse Show. There were
also numerous hunter and equitation divisions including World
Championship Hunter Rider Classes and Hunter Classics.
Kimberly
Frey of Hume, VA rode Conawara, owned by Overlook Farm and Katherine
Miracle, to first place honors out of a starting field of 39 horse-and-rider
combinations in the Lake Placid Lodge Power and Speed Stake with
a clear round and a time of 32.900 seconds. Finishing behind Frey
with clear rounds over both portions of the course in a time of
32.919 seconds was McLain Ward on his mount Galant. Penlyn Farm’s
Espadon and Candice King of Wellington, FL, finished in third
with a clear round in a time of 33.393 seconds.
Marilyn
Little of Frederick, MD and Hertel Landman topped a field of twenty
starters to win the $10,00 Turtle Lane Farm Open Jumper class.
Little was one of seven riders to ride clear in the first round
to qualify for the jump-off. She crossed through the timers with
a clear round and a time of 38.965 seconds in the jump-off. Mark
Leone was the last to go but fell just short of Little’s
time with a time of 39.661 seconds on Pinkata De Longpre. Christine
Tribble finished in the third position also with a clear round
and a time of 41.236 seconds.
Lauren
Bass and Maypine Farm’s MV Cristal won the Mirror Lake Inn
Amatuer-Owner Jumper Classic, a member of the Show Jumping Hall
of Fame Jumper Classic Series, which determines which amateur
and junior riders will compete at the 2002 National Horse Show.
Finishing in second place was Halifax Farm’s Rastella and
Emily Wood. Ashley Baker and her Dollar D’Amour placed third.
Alexa
Weeks and her Amiral won the Salamander Farm High Junior Jumper
Cassic, also a member of the Show Jumping Hall of Fame Classic
Series. Beacon Hill Partners’ Marga and rider Kristy McCormack
took second place while Erin Stewart rode Don Stewart’s Gia
to third place honors.
Carol
Cone and her October Sky won the NAL Adult Amateur Hunter Classic
and Jessica Springsteen, aboard Stone Hill Farm’s Shamrock
won the NAL Childrens Hunter Classic as well as taking the second
place award aboard Stone Hill Farm’s Sebastian. Springsteen’s
wins in the NAL Hunter Classic added more wins to her already
impressive two-week showing in Lake Placid. Springsteen took home
championship honors at the Lake Placid Horse Show and I Love New
York in the small/medium children’s hunter pony with Shamrock
as well as receiving the Grand Children’s Hunter Champion
Award at the I Love New York Horse Show. Springsteen also rode
Sebastian to reserve championship honors in the large Children’s
Hunter Pony Division at the Lake Placid Horse Show.
$50,000 I Love New York Grand Prix
For the second straight year, Margie Goldstein-Engle was victorious
in the $50,000 I Love New York Grand Prix. Linda Allen designed
a demanding first-round course as only three horse-and-rider combinations
out of a starting field of 37 left all 16 jumps in place to qualify
for the jump-off.
Danielle
Torano on Lancier 4 was the first to ride over the shortened course
of eight fences. She had one knockdown on course for a total of
four faults and a time of 41.148 seconds to finish in third place.
Next in the ring was Engle and Hidden Creek’s Laurel who
posted a clear round and a time of 40.873 seconds. The last rider
in the ring was Christine Tribble of Suffield, CT, aboard After
Eight. Tribble crossed through the timers with a time of 41.001
seconds, but with one rail falling to the ground she finished
with four faults and second place honors behind Engle.
Engle’s
win, combined with her runner-up finish in the $50,000 Budweiser
Grandprix of Lake Placid on Hidden Creek’s Perin, earned
her the Richard and Diana Feldman Perpetual Challenge Trophy for
Excellence for the best combined performance in Lake Placid’s
two Grandprix events.

I Love New York Horse Show Competition
Nona
Garson of Lebanon, NJ rode Capital S to victory in the $10,000
Golden Arrow Jump-off. Garson was one of four entries among the
20 starters to qualify for the jump-off round by riding penalty-free
over the 14-jump first-round course. Federico Sztyrle of Argentina
was first to try the eight-jump tiebreaker course and he set the
mark to beat when he finished fault-free in 37.197 seconds on
Caya.
After Christine Tribble scored 12 jump-off faults on After Eight,
Garson moved into the lead with a fault-free finish in 36.986
seconds on Capital S. The day’s final entry, two-time Olympic
veteran Lisa Jacquin of Collegeville, PA, scored eight faults
on Fabrege for a third-place finish behind Garson and Sztyrle.
Tribble finished fourth and Alberto Carmona of Venezuela was fifth
with four first-round faults on Justice.
McLain
Ward won the Lake Placid Lodge Open Speed Stake. Ward took the
class lead when he rode his mount, Éclair, to a penalty-free
ride in 54.582 seconds. None of the remaining entries could catch
his score with only Laura Chapot of Neshanic Station, NJ coming
close. She rode Sprite to a clean ride in 55.406 seconds to take
second place. Jeff Welles of Newtown, CT finished third with a
time of 56.905 seconds on Muzcot.
Grushenka
Sanchez of Puerto Rico rode her Candy’s Best to victory in
the Pin Oak Farm Amateur Owner Jumper Classic, a member of the
Show Jumping Hall of Fame Jumper Classic Series. Let’s Dance
Jil and Hillary Schlusemeyer finished second behind Sanchez.
Maggie
Jayne piloted Alex R. Jayne’s Jubulent to victory in the
Salamander Farm High Junior Jumper Classic, also a member of the
Show Jumping Hall of Fame Series. Randy Sherman rode Pegasus Show
Stables’ Caldero to second place.
Mike
Kennedy and his mount Marco bested a field of 54 entries to win
the Sidelines NAL Adult Amatuer Jumper Classic while Emmy Tromp
aboard Ri-Arm Farm’s win the NAL Children’s Jumper Classic.
Other
Festivities
An
educational, fun event, Ariat Kids Day offered 100 kids a stable
tour, jumper course walk, farrier visit, and a question-and-answer
seminar on safety in and out of the ring. Trainers Judy Richter,
Christina Schlusemeyer, and Shelly Burr were on hand as well as
course designer Steve Stephens. Jumper riders Lise Quintero and
Jimmy Torano were also present to interact with the kids. Contests
and games hosted by John Conlon of Ariat and Janet Rasmussen of
The Country Saddler preceded a pizza lunch and autograph session
with Olympic rider Nona Garson that culminated the day’s
activities.
The
Lake Placid Horse Show Association hosted the 10th Annual Doggie
Costume Contest Sponsored by Lonesome Landing of Saranac Lake
and the Brown Dog Deli of Lake Placid. Dressed as Yankee Doodle
Doggie, the class winner Lulu, a sixteen year old, deaf, beagle
mix, is owned by Laura Antonelli of Bloomingdale, NY. Receiving
the second place award for 2002 was two-time Lake Placid Doggie
Costume Contest Champion, Dottie, a six year old Jack Russell
with her daughter, Dandy, an eight month old Jack Russell, both
owned by Heather and Charlie Hooker of Wellington, FL. The mother
and daughter pair were dressed in red, white, and blue costuming.
The Lake Placid Horse Show invited dogs from the Tri-Lakes Humane
Society in search of homes to parade during the Doggie Costume
Contest. These dogs succeeded in warming the hearts of the audience
and at least one of them left the horse show with a new family.
Visitors
to the Lake Placid & I Love New York Horse Shows also enjoyed
The 15th Annual Equestrian Window Decorating Contest held in conjunction
with the horse shows. For the second consecutive year, The Lake
Placid Horse Show Association selected Adirondack Trading Company
of 103 Main Street as the winner. Placing second in this year’s
contest was Budzenbloom of Sentinel Road. The Market, of 97 Main
Street, was third.
Another
popular event at the Lake Placid Horse Show features some of the
youngest riders in the Juliam Farm Lead Line Class for riders
under the age of seven. The young riders show at a walk as they
are led around the ring. All participants left as blue ribbon
winners and gift bags from Juliam Farm. Everyone was then treated
to an ice cream party with a clown, face painting and games in
the horse show’s Hall of Fame Club.
