USET Announces Change to CSIO Spruce Meadows Team Selection Procedure
Gladstone, NJ—July 12, 2002—The United States Equestrian Team (USET) has announced a change to the selection procedure for CSIO Spruce Meadows, September 4-8.
The USET’s previously approved CSIO Spruce Meadows team selection procedures called for the World Equestrian Games (WEG) Show Jumping team to compete at both the CSIO Spruce Meadows and the World Equestrian Games in Spain, September 11-22.
Since that time, the USET Show Jumping Committee has encountered difficulties with scheduling travel arrangements for the events, which are separated by only two days. As a result, the USET has decided that it would be more advantageous for the WEG team to compete in the Samsung Nations Cup Final in Germany, August 22-25. “This change will give the WEG team the best possible opportunity to prepare for the Games,” commented Sally Ike, USET Director of Show Jumping Activities.

Horsing Around
Alfreton-based outdoor gear manufacturer Terra Nova Equipment has agreed to be the product sponsor of an equestrian expedition-with-a-difference – a 3000 mile journey from the capital of Mongolia across the Russian Mongolian border to Siberia on horse-back.
Explorers Katherine Turner and Alexandra Tolstoy set out in May on the rigorous and physical expedition which will take them 5000km on horse-back from Ulan Bator in Mongolia to Novosibirisk in Siberia.
The journey will encompass some of the most remote and breathtaking landscapes in the world, including the Altai Mountains, Lake Baikal, the world’s largest and deepest freshwater lake, and the Sayan Mountains. The trip is expected to take 5 months with the pair riding 60 km per day with a rest every 4 days for the horses.
Terra Nova Equipment has provided the adventurous pair with a Hyperspace tent and an Ultra Quasar. Both are 4-season lightweight tents, designed and built to withstand the most extreme weather conditions which Alexandra and Katherine will no doubt experience.
Katherine Turner, from Matlock, Derby was keen to get a local company involved. Katherine said: “It is essential we have top quality, light durable expedition level tents that will shelter us through some very extreme conditions, especially when we get to the mountains in Siberia. “

British Breeding's Best In Young Horse Evaluations
The full list of 38 finalists for the 2002 South Essex Insurance Brokers / British Equestrian Federation Young Horse Evaluations were announced this week.
27 of the finalists are British-bred, proving without doubt that our young horses can compete and win against expensive imported stock.
31 different owners feature in the list of qualifiers for the Championships to be held at the Horse of the Year Show on October 10th (dressage), 11th (showjumping) and 12th (eventing).
20 owner-bred horses feature in the list of finalists and 6 are totally home-produced having actually been ridden by their owner-breeders at the evaluations. The evaluations were deliberately scheduled to take place early in the season to limit the influence of professional ridden production and encourage owner-breeders to take part. Amongst the home grown finalists are John Poole's No Illusions, (by his own No Complaints) and Margaret Livingstone's Agincourt (by Stonegrove Ace) who both qualified for all three championships, a great start to their competition careers.
The standardised evaluation method adopted by the Series, which this year involved over 20 judges in 8 different venues scoring over 150 horses for potential soundness, trainability, jumping ability, paces and temperament, has proved outstandingly successful as many of the finalists have gone on subsequently to win other major young horse competitions.

SEIB Welcomes Court Ruling On Mare's Value After Accident
South Essex Insurance Brokers managing director Barry Fehler has today welcomed a ruling by a Gloucester County Court judge which has awarded damages for the psychological damage a horse suffered in a road accident.
Judge Paul Singleton accepted evidence that a six-year-old mare, which was being trained for showjumping and dressage, had lost value after a car collided with her on the road. Now, he was told, the horse could cope with quiet country lanes but had problems with busier roads. Her value had dropped from between £3,250 and £2,750 to about £2,200.
"The ruling serves as a warning to drivers, but also enforces advice giving to owners insuring their horses that they should look closely at options which give them access to legal advice and help," said Mr Fehler.

Hickstead Moves To End Drought of Lady Derby Winners
World Games teams to parade before British fans
A new class at this year's 41st Hickstead Derby Meeting (August 22-25) could well help to provide future lady winners in the British Jumping Derby. The last, Alison Dawes, was 29 years ago.
The Fordyce Curry British Ladies Jumping Derby will be held on the same day as the British Jumping Derby but in the Horseware Ireland Ring (ring two), a near replica of the International Arena with scaled-down versions of Hickstead's permanent obstacles.
"There are two reasons for introducing this class," said show secretary Lizzie Bunn. "One is to bring on Derby horses for the future and the other to give lady riders some experience of a Derby course and encourage more of them to enter in future years. We have not had a lady winner since Alison Dawes and Mr Banbury (formerly The Maverick VII) in 1973."
It was Alison's second win, the first being in 1968 on the same horse. Other lady winners were the legendary Pat Smythe in 1962 on Flanagan, in 1967 Marion Coakes on her famous pony, Stroller, and Anneli Drummond-Hay with Xanthos in 1969.
There is an extra attraction to the show this year. The All England Jumping Course has arranged to give fans a chance to show their support for the British showjumping team - to be announced for the first time at the Golden Jubilee Royal International Horse Show in July - and the eventing squad, who will both parade in the International Arena before leaving for the World Equestrian Games.

"It does not appear on our printed schedule, so we need to hear about entries as soon as possible," she said.

The British Equestrian Federation's Commitment to Racial Equality
The British Equestrian Federation (BEF), the governing body of the Sport in the UK, will sign the Sporting Equals Racial Equality Charter on Friday 26th July at the All England Jumping Course, Hickstead, West Sussex.
Sporting Equals is a partnership between Sport England and the Commission for Racial Equality which has been working closely with the British Horse Society on behalf of the members of the BEF, to achieve, maintain and where necessary improve the concept of racial equality within the sport at all levels.
An Equity Action Plan was written by the BHS for the BEF and agreed with Sporting Equals and Sport England as part of the process to achieving a Preliminary Award. The signing of the Charter at the Golden Jubilee Royal International Horse Show, the flagship event of The British Horse Society, is the first stage towards achieving this Award.
Kay Driver, Chief Executive of the British Horse Society said "The last few years have been especially exciting for our Sport, with the advent of Lottery Funding, Olympic success and the massive development of opportunities within the Sport for young people. However, all this is meaningless unless it is truly open to, and representative of everyone in society. I believe that by signing this Charter, we are sending out a clear message to everyone within the equestrian world that we have to be inclusive and equitable in all that we do, from our riding school clients to Olympic riders".

The Hampton Classic Hosts Most Successful Sponsor Workshop Ever
120 Guests Convene at Tavern On The Green
BRIDGEHAMPTON, NY—July 8, 2002—The Hampton Classic held its most successful sponsor workshop ever, hosting 120 guests on July 1 at Tavern On The Green in New York.
The Hampton Classic hosts this workshop annually to help its sponsors better understand how to maximize the value of their corporate sponsorships. The workshop provides sponsors with an overview of various opportunities available to them in connection with their sponsorships, including ancillary promotional options such as advertising on the event’s telecasts, in special Hampton Classic newspaper and magazine sections, and on local radio. Networking with other sponsors, meeting with Classic officials, and hearing from outside speakers combine to make the day extremely popular with sponsors who attend.
“Every year our sponsors thank us for hosting them at the workshop,” said Hampton Classic executive director Tony Hitchcock. “At some events sponsors simply write a check and then that ends their involvement. We encourage deeper participation and we feel that we can help accomplish that by creating a better understanding of what sponsors should, and should not, expect from us. The more they know, the more they’ll get involved.”

First Impressions
How does the public see your business? Take a few moments each day to assess how your horse business looks and performs, just as you would your prize horse. As with your horse, unnoticed small changes can add up to big problems. For your horse, it may result in poor health, soundness problems
or training issues. For your business, it may mean lost clients, prospective clients that don't return a second time, or a constant turnover in clients.
Remember - it costs 10 times as much to get a new client as it does to bring an existing one back!
There are several aspects of your horse business that can help of hurt your business, and many of them require frequent attention. If you've got a good service or product to sell, be proud of that and present it in a way that honors it. Don't mix messages to your clients by making big claims that aren't backed up by your treatment, presentation, and consideration.

Parasite resistance to equine dewormers
Drug resistance occurs by overexposing a pathogen to a medication. This overexposure gives the pathogen more opportunities to find a way to avoid the effects of the medication. Evidence has been presenting itself around the world that resistance of equine parasites to current medications is already occurring. The most well known case is the resistance of small strongyles to benzimidazoles (e.g. Panacur). This is a particular problem within North America, but also occurs around the world. In parts of the southern U.S. resistance to Pyrantel, a drug used to kill strongyles and other intestinal parasites of horses, has also been documented. Recent studies in Holland have identified incidences of total resistance of roundworms to the class of drugs called macrocyclic lactones
