The British Equestrian Federation's Commitment
to Racial Equality

The
British Equestrian Federation (BEF), the governing body of the Sport
in the UK, will sign the Sporting Equals Racial Equality Charter
on Friday 26th July at the All England Jumping Course, Hickstead,
West Sussex.
Sporting
Equals is a partnership between Sport England and the Commission
for Racial Equality which has been working closely with the British
Horse Society on behalf of the members of the BEF, to achieve, maintain
and where necessary improve the concept of racial equality within
the sport at all levels.
An
Equity Action Plan was written by the BHS for the BEF and agreed
with Sporting Equals and Sport England as part of the process to
achieving a Preliminary Award. The signing of the Charter at the
Golden Jubilee Royal International Horse Show, the flagship event
of The British Horse Society, is the first stage towards achieving
this Award.
Kay
Driver, Chief Executive of the British Horse Society said "The
last few years have been especially exciting for our Sport, with
the advent of Lottery Funding, Olympic success and the massive development
of opportunities within the Sport for young people. However, all
this is meaningless unless it is truly open to, and representative
of everyone in society. I believe that by signing this Charter,
we are sending out a clear message to everyone within the equestrian
world that we have to be inclusive and equitable in all that we
do, from our riding school clients to Olympic riders".

Spracklen, National Development Manager, Sporting Equals, said:
"We are pleased that the BEF is determined to treat racial
equality seriously. By signing the Charter, they are showing they
are committed to racial equality and equity in all their activities".
Trevor
Brooking, Chair of Sport England said "Sport England is determined
to make sure sport is equally accessible and open to all communities
- including ethnic minorities. It is fantastic to see that the BEF
is helping to achieve this by signing up to the sporting Equals
Racial Equality Charter. Sport England would like to see all governing
bodies signing up to racial equality in their sport by signing up
to the Charter".
