Debbie McDonald Named USET Athlete of the Month for June 2002

Gladstone, NJ—July 8, 2002—Debbie McDonald of Hailey, ID was named the United States Equestrian Team (USET) Athlete of the Month for June 2002 after she won the 2002 USET Grand Prix Championship which served as the Selection Trials for the World Equestrian Games (WEG), September 10-22 in Jerez, Spain. The Trials took place over two weekends at the USET Headquarters and Olympic Training Center in Gladstone, NJ, June 1-2 and June 8-9.

McDonald’s four-day total score was 71.216% allowing her to win the Grand Prix championship for the second consecutive year with Brentina on whom she won individual and team Gold Medals at the 1999 Pan American Games. The pair scored 67.84% in the Grand Prix, and 73.40% in the Grand Prix Special to end the first weekend of competition in third place with a score of 38.702%. They followed that performance scoring 71.28% in the second weekend’s Grand Prix, putting them at the top of the standings with a score of 60.086%. In the Grand Prix Freestyle, McDonald and Brentina scored 74.20%, cementing their first place finish for the win in the USET Grand Prix Championship.
