British Breeding's Best In Young Horse Evaluations

The full list of 38 finalists for the 2002 South Essex Insurance Brokers / British Equestrian Federation Young Horse Evaluations were announced this week.
27 of the finalists are British-bred, proving without doubt that our young horses can compete and win against expensive imported stock.

31 different owners feature in the list of qualifiers for the Championships to be held at the Horse of the Year Show on October 10th (dressage), 11th (showjumping) and 12th (eventing).

20 owner-bred horses feature in the list of finalists and 6 are totally home-produced having actually been ridden by their owner-breeders at the evaluations. The evaluations were deliberately scheduled to take place early in the season to limit the influence of professional ridden production and encourage owner-breeders to take part. Amongst the home grown finalists are John Poole's No Illusions, (by his own No Complaints) and Margaret Livingstone's Agincourt (by Stonegrove Ace) who both qualified for all three championships, a great start to their competition careers.

The standardised evaluation method adopted by the Series, which this year involved over 20 judges in 8 different venues scoring over 150 horses for potential soundness, trainability, jumping ability, paces and temperament, has proved outstandingly successful as many of the finalists have gone on subsequently to win other major young horse competitions.

All-section qualifier Cyril Light's impressive Belgian-bred stallion Caretino Glory (by the Holstein Cheenook) confirmed his ability by winning the Dengie Four-Year-Old Style and Performance qualifier at Pyecombe a few weeks later. Judith Ireland's Most Promising Event Horse Section qualifier Kingswell Rise and Shine (by Sir Lancelot) won the first Burghley Young Event Horse qualifier of the year. Catherston Stud's Catherston Dream Machine, won the Potential Competition Horse class for dressage horses at the Royal shortly after qualifying for the Genus Equine Most Promising Dressage Horse Section at West Wilts.
