British
Horse Society (BHS) goes 'RAW' in 2003!
Following
on from the success of the British Horse Society's annual
campaign, to control the deadly weed, Root out Ragwort
Week, comes RAW - Ragwort Awareness Week, which will
be launched on Thursday 24 July at the BHS owned Royal
International Horse Show, Hickstead, West Sussex. |
RAW
will run from 21 - 27 July this year and its aims are simple;
to take the campaign to control Ragwort to a higher level!
Thanks to the BHS many people can now recognise Ragwort
and realise that the weed can cause death to horses, ponies,
cattle and other livestock. RAW aims to raise the political
awareness of the campaign and has already got off to a flying
start with a Ragwort Bill going forward to Report Stage
and Third Reading (set for 11 July) in the House of Lords.
The
Private Members' Bill, known as the Ragwort Control Bill,
aims to provide statutory guidance on how to prevent the
spread of Ragwort through a code of practice, and the BHS
is confident that if the Bill succeeds it will make a positive
difference in controlling the spread of Ragwort.

Sun
Shines on Royal Opening
Official
opening of the new ILPH Equine Recovery and Rehabilitation
Centre on Monday 23rd June at Hall Farm, Snetterton,
Norfolk
|
After
torrential rain Sunday night and Monday morning the sun
broke through just in time to welcome HRH The Princess Royal
when she arrived at the new ILPH Hall Farm, at Snetterton,Norfolk.
Her
Royal Highness, as the charity's President, had come to
officially open the new Centre, tour the purpose built facilities,
meet staff and chat to well-wishers.
Recent
security breaches elsewhere had obviously not fased the
Princess - appearing relaxed and happy as she walked around
talking to grooms and horses alike. ILPH Bob the Cob managed
to trigger a smile and a quick retort from the royal visitor
when he showed a rather greedy interest in the royal posy
of yellow flowers.
After
refreshments the Princess unveiled a commemorative plaque
saying, "The facilities and opportunities it provides
for those animals which come to the ILPH in very great need
are exactly what we want. I wish we thought this wasn't
necessary, but it continues to be necessary.
"It
has included a human part, in terms of education in the
responsibilities of caring for horses and ponies and how
not to go down the road where animals become welfare cases.
"With
a little bit of knowledge and care we can make a real difference,
and these facilities will allow us to do that even better."

U.S.
Equestrian Team Joins Global Tree Planting Project
Planting at USET Olympic Training Center Joins Others
in Olympic Torch Route Cities And Other Sites to
Boost Environmental Effort
Gladstone,
NJJune 26, 2003Olympic show jumping
riders Margie Goldstein Engle, Nona Garson, Lisa
Jacquin and Anne Kursinski joined other Olympic
athletes from around the world who are championing
the environment as part of the Global Olive Wreath
project, created by the Athens Environmental Foundation
(AEF). The four equestrians joined the project by
presenting a tree to the United States Equestrian
Team (USET) for planting at the USET Olympic Training
Center at Gladstone, NJ.
|
Beginning
on Earth Day 2003 (April 19), AEF launched an 18-month tree-planting
project that will eventually encircle the globe along the
2004 Olympic torch route forming a figurative Global
Olive Wreath. People in every region and country of
the world are being encouraged to support the effort by
participating in local ceremonies as champions of this project.
Every city that has ever hosted an Olympic Summer Games,
plus the cities of Beijing, Cairo, Cape Town, Rio De Janeiro,
Las Vegas, Lexington (Kentucky), New York, Lausanne, and
Nicosia have held or are planning tree-planting ceremonies,
reflecting a worldwide commitment to environmental responsibility,
peace, and prosperity. AEF also plans to extend branches
of the Global Olive Wreath to some of the most troubled
cities in the world, including Jerusalem, Belfast, Ramallah,
and Baghdad.
Gladstone,
New Jersey, home of the USET Olympic Training Center, joined
the project by accepting a tree presented on behalf of Olympic
athletes by Engle, Garson, Jacquin and Kursinski who were
in Gladstone to compete for the Rolex/USET Show Jumping
Championship at the Bayer/USET Festival of Champions presented
by State Line Tack. The tree they donated was provided by
Halls Garden Center of Berkeley Heights, NJ and Tamke
Tree Experts of Liberty Corner, NJ on behalf of the International
Society of Arboriculture (ISA) who is partnering with AEF
on the Global Olive Wreath project.

British
Horse Society AGM celebrates another successful year
The
British Horse Society AGM, held yesterday (26 June)
at Saddlers' Hall in London and chaired by the Society's
President, HRH The Princess Royal, celebrated yet another
year of success. |
In
her address to Society members The Princess Royal commented
that it was difficult to plan ahead as the future was currently
less predictable than before, with changes occurring all
the time. She was encouraged by the existence of more partnerships
and collaborations within the horse world, and the accessibility
to more funds. However, Her Royal Highness said that none
of this changed the fundamental role of the BHS which was
a very important part of the network. The Princess Royal
congratulated the Society on increasing its membership and
the volunteers on an incredibly constructive year.

Equestrian
Vaulters Headed For Denver Championships
PETALUMA,
California - Three hundred equestrian vaulters and their
equine partners will converge on National Western Complex
in Denver Colorado for the 34th annual National Vaulting
Championships. This is the largest and most comprehensive
vaulting competition in the United States and vaulting
clubs from 25 states are expected to attend. This intense
four day competition will begin August 7th and culminate
on August 10th with the final round of A Team, Gold
and Pas de Deux freestyle. This will be the first opportunity
for American vaulters to earn qualifying scores for
the 2004 World Championships to be held in Stradl Paula,
Austria. |
Spectators
can expect to be amazed by these top level vaulters, including
Devon Maitozo, Acton, CA who has earned more medals in World
Championships in the Men's Division than any other man in
the world. The sport of vaulting has long been recognized
in Europe as the perfect way to introduce children to equestrian
sport. Since the 1950's the sport has developed with dramatic
levels of difficulty as vaulters perform gymnastics and
dance moves to music on their horses. Modern Vaulting is
a visual and auditory spectacle of elegance and drama in
motion.

The
Psychic Horse Healer
Hello,
my name is Rebecca and I work as a psychic for horses and
other pets. When I found out my gift I decided to develop
a web site business to allow people the opportunity to seek
help for their beloved animals.
The
people that I am helping vary from those at their wits end
over a problem that no one can put their finger on.To those
that are interested in spiritualism and psychic aspects.
Clients
send me hair and a photo of their pet from which I
can dowse the animals energies and establish what is really
going on. I pick up on profiles such as allergies , immune
system, whether the animal is in a safe environment, whether
he/she is in any sort of pain, all of the bodily functions,
then move on to the aura of the animal.
From
my findings I can then give a reading. For example if a
horse hates being stabled and is always stressed it could
be claustrophobia or is trying to tell you that you
may have a ghost!

ILPH
Summer Show an Unqualified Success
With
an estimated 6,000 people through the gates of the
ILPH Summer Show, at ILPH Hall Farm, Norfolk, last
Saturday (21 June) it was deemed yet again, a resounding
success.
The
top attractions in the main arena, the stunt riding
team the Horsemen of the Apocalypse and the King's
Troop with their tent pegging display and gun carriage
team certainly drew the crowds.
|
An
extra bonus for all ILPH supporters present was the opportunity
to see, and touch, ILPH Penny (or Hallmark as she is now
known). Penny came into ILPH Penny Farm, near Blackpool,
a couple of years ago with 3 other welfare cases. She is
now a 'wheeler' in the Kings Troop gun carriage team, and
is another success story for the ILPH.
The
sun shone brightly all day with a cooling breeze which made
life a bit more comfortable for the other horses, and competitors
elsewhere on the showground who were competing in the Horse
Show.
With
nearly 300 horses and ponies competing in 81 affiliated
and unaffiliated classes for 21 championships, the horse
show too was a huge success.

Wins 2003 NDSA Championship For Riders With A Disability
at Bayer/USET Festival of Champions Presented by State

Kingston,
RI June 25, 2003In his first trip to the Bayer/USET
Festival of Champions, Presented by State Line Tack, Keith
Newerla of Seaford, NY, topped a field of 10 horse-and-rider
combinations to win the 2003 National Disability Sports
Alliance (NDSA) Championship for Riders with a Disability.
The Championship was held June 20-22 at the USETs
Olympic Training Center in Gladstone, New Jersey.
Twenty-year-old
Newerla, and Atticus, a Hanovarian gelding owned by Jenny
Sutton, won all three phases of the competition earning
an overall score of 70.906% for the weekend. Its
my first year here, he said. Im the rookie.
Somehow I ended up doing well, I guess it was beginners
luck.
However,
with his highest score of the weekend coming in the Musical
Freestyle competition, where he executed more movements
than were required in the test, Newerla proved that it was
more than luck that landed him on top. I had a good
day. Today was a good day but being lucky helps, he
contested.

Scottish
Pairs Championships
In
glorious sunshine the second Mounted Games Association
(Scotland) Scottish Pairs Championships were held
at Vogrie Park, Midlothian, as a one-day competition.
Two
separate competitions for junior (under 17) and open
riders took place with finals in the afternoon.
In the junior competition after the morning session
Kelly Quinn and Vicky Riva were on 28 points, with
Carol Scott and Katie Hancox and Lisa Burns and Callum
Evans both on 24 points. Riders were close thereafter
with just three points seperating three pairs.
|
In
the afternoon Kelly and Vicky led from the start to win,
dropping just three points to take the overall title. Nonetheless
it was not easy for Kelly and Vicky with Edinburgh riders
Carol and Katie pushing them all the way to the final race.
In third place, two marks adrift was Lisa Burns and Callum
Evans, Callum making a welcome return back to competition
after breaking some bones in his foot earlier this year.
In
the open competition Kelly paired up with older sister Leanne
to take the open title, East Ayrshire riders' Gwen Smith
and Leanne Skelly ran out second only a few marks away.
Thanks go to MGA Chairman Bruce Nicol for starting and organising
the competition, and to Mark and Caroline Ritchie for maintaining
the equipment. Please

Michael
Whitaker's 10-year-old gelding, Landfurst 6, owned by the
Gillespie Brothers, has sadly been humanely destroyed following
a fall at CSIO Aachen yesterday. Landfurst 6 was originally
x-rayed on site and then transferred to a clinic in Aachen
for further investigations, but unfortunately the damage
to the long pastern bone (P1) was irreparable.
The
Hannoverian bred gelding, by Landadel I, amassed over £40,000
winnings during his short career with Michael. Some of his
most notable wins include the 2002 1.40m Championship at
the BSJA Festival of Show Jumping and the Grand Prix at
the Royal Winter Fair, Toronto in November 2002.

Dr.
Cesar Parra Chosen for Pan-American Games Team
White
House Station, New Jersey Dr. Cesar Parras
domination of the Prix St. Georges and Intermediaire
FEI classes at prestigious CDI shows in Florida and
New Jersey has resulted in a berth on Colombias
Pan-American Games team. With scores routinely above
70%, Parra and Horses Unlimiteds imported Hanoverian
stallion Pik L will give the favored American team a
run for their money in August in the Dominican Republic.
Pik
L and Parra have been together for about 18 months and
have matured into a consistent team. At this point
in our relationship I can really rely on Pik L,
said Parra. Not only can he do all of the movements
very easily, he can add a lot of brilliance. The
judges have agreed. Top European and North American
judges have rewarded the pair with scores above 70%,
resulting in FEI High Score awards at the US Freestyle
Championship show, the Palm Beach Dressage Derby and
the Port Jervis CDI. |
This
will be Parras second trip to the Pan-American Games;
in 1999 he helped his team win a silver medal. My
goal would be to do at least as well as we did at the last
Pan-Am Games and perhaps also medal as an individual,
Parra said. The USDF Gold Medalist and member of the International
Dressage Trainers Club has more than 300 FEI wins.

The
Equine Health Studies Program (EHSP) at the LSU School of
Veterinary Medicine will launch its third annual internet-based
Stallion Service Auction on October 15, 2003 to generate
funds for expansion of the Equine Intensive Care Unit.
The second multiple-breed stallion auction raised more than
$20,000 for the new unit, and the EHSP hopes to continue
that success with an improved auction this year. "The
Stallion Service Auction offers mare owners the opportunity
to select top quality stallions for breeding with potentially
discounted fees," said Dr. Rustin Moore, director of
the EHSP. Stallions from across the United States, representing
the multiple breeds, will be featured in the auction. Stallion
owners that donate stallion services will be recognized
as participants in the auction and their contributions are
tax deductible.
Stallion bidding starts October 15 and closes November 15
at 12pm. All stallion services offered in the auction are
intended for the 2004 breeding season and individuals may
bid on any number of stallion services. Bids will be placed
on the internet with the highest bid always being current,
and bids made over regular stud fees are tax deductible
for the mare owners.

The
Dales Pony
The
Dales Pony is a native of the upper dales of the eastern
slopes of the Pennine range, from the High Peak in Derbyshire
to the Cheviot Hills near the Scottish Border, where
a lead mining industry flourished from Roman times,
until the mid-nineteenth century. The favoured breeding
grounds have always been the upper dales of the rivers
Tyne, Wear, Allen, Tees and Swale.
The lead mining industry was subject to the geography
and environment of the area. The rakes of lead were
always situated on the high moors; the washing places
had to be near a stream; the smelting boles were always
on a hill to catch the wind and needed to be near a
wood for fuel. The pigs of lead produced were transported
over the moors to the ports on the North-East Coast
and, if wood had run out, coal was taken back. The ore,
fuel and lead were carried by strong, active pack ponies,
working in gangs of 9 to 20, loose-headed, and in charge
of one mounted man. |
During
the late seventeenth century, the Scotch Galloway was considered
to be the best pony for the fast pack work and replacements
were bred near the lead mines. Suitable native mares ran
with the breeding herds and it is recorded that farmers
also liked to run a few Scotch mares with the native herds
on the fell. The largest, strongest and most active ponies
were chosen for pack work and were well fed to ensure fitness
and speed. So it was that the black galloways of the mixed
herds eventually superseded the Scotch Galloway, and become
the Dales Pony.
The
Scotch galloways were famous for their peculiarly deep and
clean legs, their qualities were speed, stoutness and sure-footedness
over a rugged and mountainous country. In turn the Dales
ponies became renowned for their great strength, iron constitution,
endurance and the ability to get over rough country fast.
A pack load was 240lbs, or two pigs of lead per pony

in the USET Intermediaire I, the second round of
the 2003 Cosequin Pan American Games Dressage Selection
Trials, 1992 Olympic Team Bronze Medalist Carol
Lavell of Loxahatchee, FL, and Much Ado have taken

of Champions Presented by State Line Tack in Gladsone,
NJ.
|
The
pair went to the top of the field of 13 horse-and-rider
combinations after posting a score of 71.150% in the class.
Lavell earned the win despite a tack failure while on course.
Although she was happy with her performance, she noted,
I looked a little weird in the change because my stirrup
leather was getting longer and longer.
Kristina
Harrison-Naness of Burbank, CA, who won the first class
of the Cosequin Selection Trials, the FEI Prix St. Georges
held on Friday, June 19, stands in second place after finishing
second in the USET Intermediaire I, aboard Kantor. The first

finish behind Lavell. New to the tour, Harrison-Naness is
thrilled with her performance so far in Gladstone. Ive

Jumping - Kerrygold Grand Prix League - Saintfield
Gives First Win For Harry Marshall

JUST 15 riders lined out for the Farming Life Grand
Prix at Saintfield, Co. Down today (Saturday), the
results caused a major change in the Kerrygold Grand
Prix League rankings.
With
Harry Marshall taking his first Grand Prix win of
the 2003 season, a double placing in today's top six
now gives James Kernan pole position in the League,
while Andrew Dunlop also moves ahead of former leader
Clem McMahon, who has been absent on international
duty for the last few league events.Seven
riders made it through to the jump-off in fair weather
at the Saintfield Super League venue today, but the
final battle took place in heavy rain, changing the
aspect of the competition. Marshall, however, a seasoned
campaigner in all weathers, took victory on his own

Jeff
Welles Wins $25,000 USET Festival of Champions Grand
Prix at 2003 Bayer/USET Festival of Champions Presented
by State Line Tack
Gladstone,
New JerseyJune 20, 2003Jeff Welles of
Newtown, CT, rode Penelope to victory in the $25,000
USET Festival of Champions Grand Prix at the Bayer/USET
Festival of Champions Presented by State Line Tack.
Welles was one of seven entries of the starting
field of 28 to qualify for a tiebreaking jump-off
by riding without penalty over the 16-effort, first-round
course designed by Richard Jeffery. He clinched
the win when he turned in a penalty-free ride over
the seven-jump tiebreaker course in a time of 36.590
seconds.
|
Margie
Engle of Wellington, FL had held the lead after finishing
the jump-off course fault-free in 36.770 seconds on Hidden
Creeks Perin, her 2000 Sydney Olympic mount. However,
Welles made no concessions to the rain-soaked course and
sped around the course to edge Engle by less than two-tenths
of a second on the 12-year-old, German-bred mare on whom
he claimed the Grand Prix win last weekend at Ox Ridge.
She
