Super League News : Dutch Delight in Rotterdam!
In
what can only be described as a bizarre twist to the
Samsung Super League, the Dutch came out on top in
the second-last leg of the series at Rotterdam today
when completing with the only zero score of the competition.
Fault-free performances in both rounds for Eric Van
der Vleuten (Audis Jikke), Jan Tops (Grande
Dame) and Albert Zoer (Lowina) meant that the final
Dutch rider, Peter Geerink, did not have to jump while
the line-up of teams at the end of the competition
was in stark contrast to what might have been expected.
The French completed with just four faults on the
board but few would have dreamed that the Italians
and Swedes would join them in second place after their
run of recent form and while Great Britain slotted
into fifth carrying nine faults ahead of Belgium with
12, it was left to Germany and Ireland, two nations
with different but very definite expectations for
a considerably better result, to share seventh place
with 13 faults apiece. Please

Celebrity
vet's mission to save the brick kiln donkeys of Cairo
Vet
Emma Milne, star of the hit TV series 'Vets in Practice',
has returned to Egypt with the Brooke Hospital for Animals
to raise the plight of donkeys slaving in the brick kilns
of Cairo.
Emma
was first made aware of the suffering inflicted upon thousands
of donkeys when she visited the brick kiln sites with the
Brooke last year. A subsequent article in the People newspaper
raised nearly £20,000 and has enabled the Brooke to
purchase a new 'mobile team' (vehicle plus vets) to reach
even more 'brick kiln donkeys'.
Donkeys
often work 12-hour days in temperatures as high as 50C pulling
heavy loads of bricks on carts between the brick making
machines and the furnaces. Most suffer from heat exhaustion,
pressure sores, lameness, malnutrition and broken bones.
The workers themselves are very poor and work under arduous
conditions and tend to beat the donkeys to make them work
as hard as possible. Before Brooke's arrival, the animals
had a very short lifespan and many would be worked to death.
Today,
Brooke mobile teams provide free veterinary treatment for
the donkeys. They also educate brick kiln owners and workers
in equine care, install water troughs, construct shade shelters
and work to improve the design of harnesses and saddle packs.

Ireland
Fail To Shine In Rotterdam Nations Cup
IRELAND'S
show jumping team failed to rise to the occasion at
the last-but-one of the Samsung Super League fixtures
in Rotterdam today (Friday), and must now rely on the
double-points scoring system at Barcelona's Final in
September if they are to overtake France for the Series
trophy. Home
team Holland took today's Super League Cup, while Italy,
Sweden and France tied for second place, an unprecedented
occurrence in the Super League, but one which France
another 5.3 points to further increase their lead in
the rankings. Ireland tied for seventh place with Germany.
Finishing
so far down in the competition was certainly not the
result Irish Chef d'Equipe Tommy Wade had been looking
for, and there may be some serious head-scratching by
the selectors before Barcelona.

Norman Dello Joio Captures $30,000 Adequan Grand Prix
Bridgehampton,
NYAugust 29, 2003Norman Dello Joio of Wellington,
FL, captured the $30,000 Adequan Fiesta Day Grand Prix at
the 28th annual Hampton Classic Horse Show in Bridgehampton,
NY.
In
the eleven horse jump-off, the times kept getting quicker
and quicker. The second-last rider in the ring, Dello Joio
was the fastest of them all, clocking in at 35.46 seconds.
The
course was careful, and I was expecting only five or six
clears, noted Dello Joio of the test set by course
designer Conrad Homfeld of Southampton, NY. There
were a lot of very good horse/rider combinations in the
competition.
Dello
Joio, a 1992 individual Olympic bronze medalist, was riding
Glasgow, a 14-year-old chestnut Dutch Warmblood gelding
by Emilion that Dello Joio purchased with the Glasgow Group
in Scotland.

- Ireland In Penultimate Battle For Super League Victory
THE
IRISH team of Billy Twomey, Peter Charles, Cian O'Connor
and the reigning World Show Jumping Champion, Dermott
Lennon, line out this afternoon in Rotterdam to do battle
for the Super League Nations Cup of the Netherlands.
With
France pulling further into the league lead, Ireland,
currently at No.2 on the overall rankings, badly needs
a win at Rotterdam to close the gap between second and
first place.
Lennon
comes back into the Irish squad after a long absence.
Both he and his most celebrated horse <Liscalgot>
have been prone to unfortunate injuries for most of
the year, but Lennon now has a new horse, <OBOS Quality>,
with which he hopes to recreate some of the magic that
won him the World Championship in Jerez last year.

at Gijon (Spain) today (Thursday), finishing just .20
of a second behind him in the event's major Speed Class.

the 11 yr old Chestnut mare <Laughton's Lass>,
Shane Carey repeated his finishing position in yesterday's
opening class on the same horse, when he trailed just
under two seconds behind Belgium's Gregory Wathelet.

Samsung
Super League News : Roll On Rotterdam..............
After
the agony and ecstasy of last weekend's European
Championships, show jumping minds have now firmly
switched focus to the Samsung Super League with
next Fridays crunch leg in Rotterdam likely
to prove pivotal to the end result.
Donaueschingen
however was fairly unforgettable.
The
agony on the face of Belgiums Ludo Philippaerts
who could afford to have a fence down and still
take gold in the final round of the European Individual
title-decider when he realised that he had lost
everything due to a single time fault, and the ecstasy
for Germany when claiming team gold along with all
the individual medals were the two extremes of devastation
and delight which so often mark great sporting moments
|
Germanys
dominance proved one thing for sure. When they bring out
their big guns for a major occasion they are difficult to
beat, but that makes the French result in the team championship
all the more remarkable. They lost nothing in defeat as
they slotted into silver medal position because their best
horses and riders have campaigned long and hard in the Samsung
Super League all season and yet still presented a colossal
challenge. For sheer brilliance and consistency the reigning
World Champions are in a league of their own.

Lightning
and Floods Fail To Deter "Search" Hopefuls
Extreme
weather conditions, including constant thunder and lightning
together with flooding, failed to deter South Essex Insurance
Brokers "Search for a Star" competitors at their
last chance to compete at the Horse of the Year Show.
They
were at the Richmond Equestrian Centre in Yorkshire for
the last selection day in the current series. "Conditions
were absolutely awful, but the horses were wonderful, even
when they were waiting in their boxes outside," said
organiser Nicolina MacKenzie, equestrian marketing manager
for South Essex.
But
it was a worthwhile journey from Huddersfield for Rebecca
Brierley and her cob, Barney Rubble V. The pair had failed
by one place to qualify in Lancashire earlier in the series
- "so I thought I would have one last go." They
came first in their class to clinch their place at the Horse
of the Year Show, due to be held at the National Exhibition
Centre, Birmingham, on September 17-21.

Kraut Absolutely Fabulous in Absolut Open Jumper Competition
at the Hampton Classic Horse Show
Bridgehampton,
NYAugust 27, 2003With back-to-back victories
on Wednesday in the Open Jumper division, Olympian Laura
Kraut of Oconomowoc, WI, shined at the 28th annual Hampton
Classic Horse Show held in Bridgehampton, NY.
Kraut
topped a 44-horse field to win the Absolut Open Jumper competition
by one fraction of a second. Todd Minikus had posted what
looked to be an unbeatable time of 40.50 seconds, but Kraut
managed to clock in at 40.49 seconds to overtake the lead
and win the class.
My
goal was not to win, but just to be neat, explained
Kraut. I was surprised when I looked up at the clock
and saw that I had come close to Todds time, I didnt
realize at first that I had beaten it.
Kraut,
37, has only been partnered with Quick Star 2Z, a nine-year-old
mare owned by Pasmore Stables, since March.

Be
Seen This Winter Says BETA
THE
British Equestrian Trade Association (BETA) has put
out a call for riders to be more safety conscious
in the run up to and during the winter.
Riding
on the road can be dangerous but at times unavoidable
and in winter it is more important than ever to make
sure both you and your horse are visible to drivers.
"Many
people do not maximise their visibility when they're
out on the roads" says Claire Williams of BETA.
"High visibility clothing is not just baggy,
green tabards anymore. There's a whole new range of
stylish gear available on the market, so there's no
excuse for not being safe on the roads this winter."
|
The
most important area to highlight is the riders' head as
this can be seen above car height in built up areas and
also above fences and hedgerows on country roads so make
sure you invest in a fluorescent hat cover.
Highlighting
points on your horse can also make a big difference. Tail
guards with reflective strips are perfect for increasing
visibility from behind while a bridle kit, with strips for
the browband, noseband and both reins will make a big difference
to oncoming traffic.

Exford
Meeting Seeks To Identify Support For Horseshoe Return
A
meeting is to be held in Exford Village Hall on September
10 to identify support for plans to return the prestigious
Golden Horseshoe Ride to the village.
Exford
had hosted the ride for more than 25 years, but this year
it was moved to Dunster after concerns about Health and
Safety, steep gradients for competitors as they started
and alleged local hostility.
A
six-strong committee, chaired by Mrs Beth Horstmann from
Court Farm, has been working to answer criticisms and has
found an alternative site to the traditional Auction Field,
together with promised sponsorship.

Celebrates Win in $20,000 David Yurman Time Challenge
On Opening Day of the Hampton Classic
Bridgehampton,
NY August 24, 2003 Jeffrey Welles of Newtown,
CT, opened the 28th Hampton Classic Horse Show with a victory
in the inaugural $20,000 David Yurman Time Challenge, a
new Open Jumper Speed class held on Manhattan Mortgage Companys
Opening Day, presented by Distinction Magazine, August 24.
Twenty-four
horse-rider combinations contested the competition where
speed was the name of the game. Welles had a clear round
in the fastest time, 67.60 seconds, to win the $20,000 David
Yurman Time Challenge riding Equinox, a nine-year-old Dutch
Warmblood gelding owned by Elizabeth Saunders.
It
was really nice to have a fun class without a lot of pressure
to ride in, said Welles. The jumps werent
that big, so you had to take a chance by going fast if you
wanted to win.
The
final rider on course, 1996 Olympic team silver medalist
Peter Leone of Greenwich, CT, came close riding Kiana, but
his final time of 68.40 seconds left him in second position.
Callan Solem of Colts Neck, NJ, placed third in a time of

Jumping - Kerrygold Grand Prix League - O'Brien Steals
Limerick Super League Show
EXCITEMENT
and temperatures both ran high at Limerick today (Sunday)
as the lead in the Super League Grand Prix changed hands
several times, and with major upsets occurring in the
overall rankings.
Lt.
David O'Brien on <Boherdeal Clover> was an early
Grand Prix leader, and seemed unbeatable, until Peter
Smyth on <Zara's Pride>, fourth last in the jump-off,
set a scorching pace that put him into first place.
But O'Brien had an ace up his sleeve in the form of
<Carraig Dubh>, and, second-last to jump, shaved
fractions of a second off the Ulsterman's time to re-take

Stephan
Weiss's Final Work Unveiled at the Hampton Classic
Bridgehampton,
NY August 24, 2003 An impressive bronze sculpture,
Dressage Horse, the final work by artist Stephan
Weiss, was unveiled on Manhattan Mortgage Companys
Opening Day, presented by Distinction Magazine, at the Hampton
Classic Horse Show in Bridgehampton, NY, on Sunday, August
24.
Donna
Karan, wife of the late sculptor, and Weisss family
chose the Hampton Classic as the site for the first public
viewing of the large-scale bronze statue, a piece from the
Larger Than Life collection.
There
were four elements to the Larger Than Life collection,
including a big apple, a high-heeled shoe and a roll of
film, explained Karan, well-known fashion designer.
Steve had a vision for each piece, for example the
big apple of course was his tribute to New York City. This
horse was my husbands last piece before he passed
away, and he knew he was doing it inspired by the Hampton
Classic.
Karan
and other members of Weisss family including his children
Lisa Weiss Keyes, Gabrielle Karan Defelice and Corey Weiss,
were all on hand to witness the unveiling. The bronze statue
will greet visitors as they enter the grand prix tent throughout
the duration of the Hampton Classic Horse Show.

Jumping - Babington Fails To Dent German Supremacy At
Euro Finals
DESPITE
racking up one of only two double clear rounds in the
whole of the European Team show jumping championships
on Thursday, Ireland's Kevin Babington failed to repeat
the magic in the Individual championships today (Sunday).
Hopes were high as US-based Babington, from Carrick-on-Suir,
went into the arena today ranked fourth out of 25 riders
after his scores on Thursday and Friday, but with the
middle part of the combination fence down and a toe
in the water in the first round, he quickly slipped
to 12th position overall.
The
last fence down in the second round marginally improved
his position to 11th in the Final, but German domination
of the competition proved unassailable, and the home
country finished with the top three places, to add to
their team championship win on Friday. Only 19 riders
took part in the second round today. Please

The
Tiger Horse
Does
it have stripes? Does it roar instead of neigh?
Well
no, but the Tiger Horse is certainly worth roaring about!
The history of this colorful easy gaited breed is the
history of Europe and the New World. These horses carried
conquerors and the conquered and carved new empires
out all across the world. Thirty thousand years ago,
unknown artists painted their horses, wearing rope halters,
in caves in Spain. These horses, members of the huge
"proto warmblood" herds which roamed Europe,
are the base upon which the Spanish Jennet was built.
Over the millennia various infusions of blood from northern
climates, the Orient, and North Africa gradually produced
horses of smooth gait and great pride.
|
When
Ferdinand came to the Spanish throne, he passed the "Gentlemans
Law", which stated that "All Gentlemen must ride
stallions". This law intensified the breeding of horses
which had great presence, but were gentle and docile in
nature. These influences insured that the Jennet was so
highly regarded by the European horsemen of the 15th through
18th centuries that, in 1593 Salomen de al Broue, Horsemaster
to Henry IV of France wrote: "Comparing the better
horses in order to appreciate their greater perfection,
I must place the Spanish at the top and give it my vote
for being the most noble, the best conformed, the bravest
and the most worthy of being mounted by a Great King."

in conjunction with the American Endurance Ride Conference
(AERC) 25-, 50- and 100-mile Spook Run, the championship
ride offers challenges--rugged hills and rocks--and fall
beauty. You'll trot through a forest ablaze in shades of
crimson, ruby, rust, maroon, gold and plum and ride around
Deam's Lake. There are lots of points along a ridge where
you can see for miles.
