Bridgehampton, NY — August 24, 2003 — An impressive bronze sculpture, ‘Dressage Horse’, the final work by artist Stephan Weiss, was unveiled on Manhattan Mortgage Company’s Opening Day, presented by Distinction Magazine, at the Hampton Classic Horse Show in Bridgehampton, NY, on Sunday, August 24.

Donna Karan, wife of the late sculptor, and Weiss’s family chose the Hampton Classic as the site for the first public viewing of the large-scale bronze statue, a piece from the “Larger Than Life” collection.

“There were four elements to the “Larger Than Life” collection, including a big apple, a high-heeled shoe and a roll of film,” explained Karan, well-known fashion designer. “Steve had a vision for each piece, for example the big apple of course was his tribute to New York City. This horse was my husband’s last piece before he passed away, and he knew he was doing it inspired by the Hampton Classic.”

Karan and other members of Weiss’s family including his children Lisa Weiss Keyes, Gabrielle Karan Defelice and Corey Weiss, were all on hand to witness the unveiling. The bronze statue will greet visitors as they enter the grand prix tent throughout the duration of the Hampton Classic Horse Show.

“There was never any question that the Hampton Classic would be the perfect fit for this piece,” insists Karan. “Where else would the horse be more appreciated? It is the premier event for a premier piece of art.”

Completed posthumously by his son, Corey Weiss, after Weiss lost a seven-year battle with lung cancer in June of 2001, ‘Dressage Horse’ pays homage to the grace and beauty of equestrian movement. In mid-step, a horse is captured in a tribute to the power and fluidity of equine motion.

A native Long Islander, Weiss was a creative visionary who embraced life with passion. His ardor for all living things was evident in his art, which captured the abstract essence of movement. Weiss called his work “Energy Field Art,” a process that began with Weiss placing random dots on a page before he would spontaneously connect them to find the form within.

Weiss was an adventurer who loved the thrill of motorcycles and open roads. In his art, business, and life, Weiss lived for the challenge of saying something new while always moving forward. With the unveiling of ‘Dressage Horse’, Weiss’s family shares the beauty, love and vision of his work.

The Hampton Classic Horse Show, a week-long sports and entertainment spectacle, culminating on Sunday, August 31, with the $150,000 Prudential Financial Grand Prix, a member event of the King Shavings/U.S. Grand Prix League (USGPL).

In addition to daily competition in six rings, spectators will be treated to a variety of other exhibits including the Boutique Garden’s 40 vendor booths, Stable Row’s 20 booths, three on-site public restaurants, and the educational exhibition area ‘The World of the Horse’ complete with pony rides, the new Mercado and various displays of horses, birds, and farm animals.
