A
unique blend produces genius between two equine disciplines
The
British Horse Society and Riding Clubs in Scotland
host a powerful event sponsored by Equenox
|
Scotland
enjoyed a unique blend of two sporting disciplines last
week (27 November) when The British Horse Society and British
Riding Clubs in Scotland hosted 'An evening with Jeanette
and Emile' - a Masterclass featuring Jeanette Brakewell
and Emile Faurie and sponsored by Equenox, the equine clothing
company.
The
event, held at Gleneagles EC, was enjoyed by over 500 people
and its hallmark was the complementary styles of the two
presenters; mixing the artistry and science of the disciplines
produced excellent entertainment as well as education.

Providing
More Than Cold Comfort This Winter
Now that winter is here and routines have changed are
you finding that your horse is losing condition and
is generally not looking quite as good as during the
rest of the year?
The question of how to keep weight on and maintain good
condition, without overfeeding or causing behavioural
problems is one which is frequently asked. Choose a
conditioning feed which is low in starch yet contains
plenty of slow-release digestible energy (either for
work or to maintain condition) and you won't go far
wrong. Such a feed will put condition on almost any
horse, but lower starch levels have the benefit of minimising
the risk digestive upsets, particularly in horses that
are being fed large quanitities. Barley-free, low starch
conditioning feeds also avoid the problems of 'hotting-up'
for many horses that have previously been difficult,
as well as being suitable for horses with a barley intolerance.

British
Horse Society Ragwort MP wins award for animal welfare
The
British Horse Society (BHS) is pleased to announce
that John Greenway, the Ryedale, North Yorkshire MP
who was responsible for steering the BHS initiated
Ragwort Control Bill successfully through Parliament,
has won the inaugural ePolitix Charity Champion Award
for Animal Welfare. The awards ceremony, which took
place last night (2 December) at the Queen Elizabeth
II Conference Centre, London, was attended by a large
number of MPs, Peers, charity representatives and
the Charities Commission.
|
Mr
Greenway was delighted with his award and in his acceptance
speech he paid tribute to the BHS and to Alun Michael, Minister
for Rural Affairs, and his team at Defra for their help
and support. He added that he had not needed much persuading
to introduce the Bill following his success in the Private
Members' Ballot last year. Thanking ePolitix for including
animal welfare as a category at the awards ceremony he told
the audience, "In June every year you can stand on
the hill and look down on Ryedale Show. It has six rings
to accommodate all the horses that come from miles around
to take part. It's obvious that these are much loved animals
and sadly, too many horses die from ragwort poisoning."

The
Horse Professional's Code Of Conduct
By Lisa Derby Oden
Wow.
Proposing a Code of Conduct for horse professionals could
be a daunting task. Anyone who has been part of the horse
industry for many years will recognize that it is a highly
diverse industry. This diversity offers a tremendous wealth
not only to those that are involved for a lifetime, but
also to those who participate for a shorter term. But just
as it provides us with endless opportunity, it can also
be the jumping off point for differing opinions, the inability
to unite, and industry division. Is it possible to propose
a code of conduct that applies to all disciplines and all
breeds? Maybe, maybe not. The underlying question for professionals
is this: How do we want others, whether lifers or short-termers,
to experience and regard the industry? This question has
great depth to it. The answer may prove to
be a key to industry survival.

SPILLERS
Senior- the first complete senior feeding system
SPILLERS
have launched a revolutionary new way to cater for the
special nutritional requirements of the senior horse
by introducing the first ever, complete senior feeding
system, which will be available from January 2004.
Like
people, horses age at different rates and are considered
older by their owners at very different stages. In general
most senior feeds are designed to provide condition,
but all horses differ in their energy requirements and
dont always need the extra calories these feeds
offer. However, the aging process itself places extra
demands on the body that will benefit from specialist
nutrition to support health and activity during later
years.

British
Horse Society in Scotland lobbies for its own Ragwort
Bill
The
British Horse Society (BHS) Scotland is pressing on
with lobbying the Scottish Parliament for its own Ragwort
Control Bill and code of practice following the success
of the BHS' Bill in England and Wales. |
The
BHS sponsored Private Members' Bill, the Ragwort Control
Bill introduced by John Greenway, MP for Ryedale in North
Yorkshire, received Royal Assent last month (20 November)
and comes into force on 20 February 2004. The new Act, which
provides for a statutory code of practice, covers England
and Wales only. A draft code of practice for England has
been prepared in advance of the Bill and should be ready
for publication when the Ragwort Control Act comes into
force. A separate, but similar, code is being developed
by the National Assembly for Wales.

Jayne Wins Victor Hugo-Vidal National Horse Show Equitation
Championship At The 120th National Horse Show
WELLINGTON,
FL December 1, 2003 Charlie Jayne, 17,
of Elgin, Illinois, riding Ivy owned by Missy Clark,
clinched the win in the Victor Hugo-Vidal Equitation
Championship on Sunday, November 30, the final day
of the 120th National Horse Show in Wellington, FL.
|
The
three-phase championship was contested over three days and
included testing on the flat, over a hunter course, and
on a jumper course. Charlie bested the reigning champion,
his sister Maggie Jayne, 19, who rode Cedar owned by Sarah
Willeman, by two points, edging her out when the two were
asked to work-off following the jumper phase. Riding off
against his sister didnt faze Charlie. That
was just fun, he said. If I won or she won,
it was in the family, so I felt pretty good about that.
Its not as much pressure.

FEI World Cup 2003/2004
Western European League Dressage
Stockholm
(SWE) - November 28-30, 2003
Stockholm's
Globe arena was filled to capacity with an audience
screaming and applauding in pop-concert fashion
to watch local hero Jan Brink, Sweden's European
individual silver medallist, triumph in the FEI
World Cup dressage qualifier.
"
I have never felt an atmosphere like it, the audience
raised the roof", said Brink, who also won
the grand prix on Bjoersells Briar. " And as
I said to German riders Heike Kemmer and Ann Kathrin
Linsenhoff, it was such a high quality field here
that it was success even to get into the first five
or six", he added.
|
It
was also a great birthday present for Finnish rider Kyra
Kyrklund to come second, even though it meant being beaten
by her pupil, Jan Brink. However, Kyrklund also saw another
former pupil, Britain's Emma Hindle, who spent five years
studying with her at Flyinge Stud, place fourth. Kyrklund,
who is currently based in England but is buying her own
place in Sweden close to Jan Brink, also scored over 80
per cent for a fault free performance on Andiamo Tyme, the
impressive grey gelding she rides for American owner Linda
Fowler.

O'Connor
Fourth At Belfast Grand Prix
BRITAIN
again stole the honours at Belfast tonight (Sunday),
with Andrew Davies winning the £27,000 Grand
Prix prize purse, but Ireland's Cian O'Connor managed
a lucrative fourth, and was the only Irish rider to
jump a double clear round.
Bryan Henry's taxing course had the near-capacity
crowd at Belfast's Odyssey arena holding its collective
breath as rider after rider in the first round fell
foul of the bogey line from the vertical at Fence
No. 6 to the double at No.7. By the time Cian O'Connor
arrived to tumultuous applause, only one rider of
15 - Switzerland's Daniel Etter - had managed to jump
clear. Four riders had also retired after racking
up multiple errors.
O'Connor,
ecouraged by shouts from the crowd, clocked up Ireland's
first clear on <Waterford Crystal>, and this
seemed to break the spell the next three riders, who
also took clears, one of them O'Connor's Nations Cup
team-mate Billy Twomey on <Anastasia>.

Welles And Equinox Win $10,000 Chesapeake Petroleum
National Speed Stake At 120th National Horse Show
WELLINGTON,
FL November 30, 2003 Jeffery Welles,
41, of Pound Ridge, NY, riding Equinox for owner Elizabeth
Saunders won the $10,000 Chesapeake Petroleum National
Speed Stake on Saturday, November 29, at the 120th
National Horse Show in Wellington, FL. The show runs
from November 26-30 at the Palm Beach Polo Equestrian
Club show grounds, highlighted by the $100,000 AGA
Championship on Sunday, and Dressage at the National,
November 28-30.
|
Welles
bested a class of 20 entries in the Internationale Arena
over a course designed by Jose Gamarra. He described the
11-effort track as a nice galloping course with a
few turns and a few options. One oxer by the ingate that
was a little bigger caught a few horses. The time
allowed was 76 seconds, and Equinox blazed around the course
clean in the unbeatable time of 51.290. It was a very
fast class, said Welles. The other entries that
really tried to go fast ended up with some mistakes at the
end. The horses got a little flat and had rails. My horse
really kept his focus all the way through and jumped a really
nice round. The horse went great and Im very happy
with him.

Dover And FBW Kennedy Win Grand Prix Special At 2nd
Annual Zada Enterprises, LLC Dressage at the National
WELLINGTON,
FL November 30, 2003 Robert Dover, 47,
of Long Island, NY, and Wellington, FL, rode FBW Kennedy
to victory in the Grand Prix Special at the 2nd Annual
Zada Enterprises, LLC Dressage at the National on
Saturday, November 29, with a score of 69.700%. The
dressage show runs from November 28-30 in conjunction
with the 120th National Horse Show at the Palm Beach
Polo Equestrian Club show grounds in Wellington, FL.
|
The
horse is absolutely fabulous, said five-time Olympian
Dover. I learned an awful lot today. This was
Dovers first trip down centerline with Kennedy and
also his first competitive ride since the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
Dover said he was so pleased with the first part of his
test that he was a little over-zealous into the ones
on the centerline. I got ahead of his movement for a second
and instead of sitting down I let him get too free. I probably
let him get too free with my hands in several places instead
of just keeping steady contact. Those are things we learn
as we go along and now Ill watch the video 25 times,
ad nauseum.

Pregnant
Pony Abandoned With Rope Embedded in Nose
HorseWorld
staff were shocked when they found a pony abandoned
on wasteland in Avonmouth with a blue nylon rope embedded
in its nose. The nylon rope appeared to have been used
as a head collar, which is very dangerous as they can
tighten and as in Sweet Pea's case, leave a very deep
and painful wound.
HorseWorld
staff rushed the pony back to their Welfare department
in Whitchurch, Bristol, to remove the rope. The wound
was obviously very painful for the pony, but she remained
calm whilst grooms cleared out the dead skin. Staff
at HorseWorld named the pony "Sweet Pea" -
due to her prettiness and sweet nature.

Second
World Cup victory for Freund
World
Cup Champion Michael Freund has won the FEI World
Cup Driving event in Stockholm. After he won the World
Cup event in Stuttgart last weekend he drove superb
again in the Globen arena in Stockholm. He won the
warm up competition and was therefore last to go in
the World Cup. OI had seen that all the other competitors
made mistakes, so I took it easy,¹ explains the
49-year old driver from Germany. Freund is now half
way through his World Cup season and in the lead of
the standings. He is ready to renew his World Cup
title, but he knows that he will have to fight for
it in Vigo.

The
top 12 horses that qualified in competitions held earlier
in the week were eligible to compete in the final two jumping
rounds on Friday night to determine the hunter champion.
Smith qualified seven horses for the final. In addition
to his win, Smith also placed second, third, fifth and sixth.
We had a good night, for sure, said Smith. It
was an accumulative score throughout the week so you really
had to have a horse that was consistent. They were all good
steady horses so that worked in our favor nicely.
