Irish Pile On Pressure At Belfast

THOUGH
British riders continue to dominate the main classes at the Belfast
international horse show this weekend, Ireland piled on the pressure
today (Saturday), with five riders in the top ten in the big 1.55m
Horseware Classic, Peter Charles bringing his new mount <It's
Magic Max> in fractions of a second behind second-placed UK rider
Robert Smith at the new Odyssey Arena.
Ireland's
Marion Hughes, who has had a strong show so far, finished in third,
while veteran Edward Doyle and Zagreb Nations Cup hero Ryan Crumley
took fifth and sixth respectively.
The
class was won by British veteran Nick Skelton, riding <Russel>,
who took £5000 in prize money.
In
the earlier Crumley Construction Accumulator, 2003 National League
winner Peter Smyth was best of the Irish with <Western Fairway>,
claiming a sixth, closely followed by Billy Twomey and <Winnie
Jackson> in seventh. The competition was won by British ace John
Whitaker on the 12 yr-old grey gelding <Lactic Two>.
Tonight
sees the much-awaited Puissance competition, with eight Irish riders
lining out in a total field of 18.
