The Very Best Of Fresh, Home-grown, British Produce

Farmers' markets around the country will be offering the very best of fresh, home-grown, British produce to shoppers who want to eat local this festive season.

And to add to the festive spirit, many farmers' markets throughout the UK will have special events in December. Look out for mulled wine, hot chestnuts, mince pies, carols sung by local schools, Victorian carousels, music from local bands and, needless to say, Father Christmas.

Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, celebrity chef and patron of the National Association of Farmers Markets, said: "I've not the least doubt that the best food for Christmas feasting is to be found at farmers' markets.

"They have got the lot - fully-flavoured free range turkeys and geese, properly-aged beef and lamb, the best home-cured hams and bacon, the freshest seasonal vegetables, the finest British cheeses and outstanding condiments and preserves."

All this comes with the added bonus of being able to talk to the producers to find out exactly what has happened to your food before you buy it.

Jane Brook from Orton Farmers' Market in Cumbria said: "Christmas markets in Europe have long been associated with the magic of the festive season. Now many farmers' markets in the UK are also creating the same magical atmosphere with Christmas carols, hot punch and all the wonderful aromas of festive food and drink that has been brewed, baked, pickled, grown or reared locally."
