Canadians
Sweep 1-2-3 At First HITS Ocala Grand Prix Of The Season
Ocala,
FL (February 7, 2003)Two Olympic veterans and
a rising star made the Canadian presence felt at the
$25,000 HITS Ocala Grand Prix. World-class show jumper,
Mario Deslauriers of Bromont, Quebec, paired with Kathleen
to lead the Canadian charge into the winner's circle.
Jonathon Millar of Perth, Ontario, fought for a close
second on Karat, while managing to relegate his father,
seven-time Olympic veteran, Ian Millar, to third place
on his mount Promise Me. |
The
$25,000 HITS Ocala Grand Prix marked the first of ten Grand
Prix events to be held each Thursday and Sunday over the
next five weeks at the HITS Ocala Winter Circuit. With over
$1,000,000 in prize money to be awarded, the circuit attracts
many of the world's top show jumpers. "Over the past
twelve years, the HITS Ocala Winter Circuit has received
strong support from the Canadian contingent," said
Tom Struzzieri, owner and president of HITS. "We are
pleased to see them here today to jump-start the circuit
with such a fine display of horsemanship."
Of
the 32 starters, five horse/rider combinations advanced
to the jump-off by successfully clearing the 13-obstacle
course designed by William "Buddy" Brown. Ian
Silitch on Cable was the first to ride in the six-fence
jump-off, dropping an unlucky rail and posting a fast time
of 44.10 seconds. Ian Millar and Promise Me left all the
fences up and clocked in at 46.45 seconds. Derek Petersen
and Promised Land posted the fastest time of 43.93 seconds
but paid for it with eight faults. Mario Deslauriers was
next up with Kathleen and the pair sailed through the course
in the winning time of 46.26 seconds. Jonathon Millar saw
what he had to beat and he and Karat gave it all, losing
to Deslauriers by a split, but managing to top his father
for second place.

Makes The Journey East To Compete in The AHJF Hunter
Classic Spectacular
February
7, 2003 -- Wellington, Florida -- On February 15,
2003 the seventh annual American Hunter-Jumper Foundation
(AHJF) Hunter Classic Spectacular will be featured
under the lights in Wellington, FL. Among the list
of top notch competitors will be Peter Pletcher, who
is the 2002 Chronicle of the Horse Professional World
Champion Hunter Rider. He earned his ticket to compete
when he won that title. Pletcher will come from the
West Coast to the East Coast to compete in this prestigious
event.
We
talked with Pletcher, of Magnolia, TX, about his journey
East and about the Classic. Pletcher noted, "It's
the top hunter event in the world and it is very important
for a hunter rider to try and compete in this class
to support the sport. It is also one of the biggest
money classes for hunter riders.
|
AHJF
President, Geoff Teall, is pleased that Pletcher sees the
value in traveling to Florida. I think it is great
that Peter is showing such interest in the program, as well
as the class itself. I am sure he will be a big threat to
everyone involved, and I hope he wins. He has been a great
supporter of the program and the AHJF since its inception,
and we really appreciate it.

also known as 'Rural Riders', has been accepted by the International
Equestrian Federation (FEI) as an FEI event. The event is
set at CIC** level and riders who complete the event will
be able to count it as a qualification towards CCI** and

forefront pushing for Rural Riders to become an FEI event.
In
2002, the event was hosted by British Riding Clubs at Hartpury
College, Gloucester, when Great Britain won the Bronze medal.
Peter Buist, Vice-Chairman of BRC and organiser of the 2002
event, said, "This is great news for the riders and
an extra incentive for people to take part. It will also
make life easier for organisers and officials as for the

Kilkenny
Insurance: A Labor of Love and This Weeks Sponsor
of The 2003 Winter Equestrian Festival
Wellington,
Florida -- February 7,2003 -- In 1994, Wellington residents
Laura and Michael Whitlow sat down and asked themselves
how they could combine their love of horses and the horse
community with a satisfying and profitable business. Bingo!!
Named after Michaels familys farm in Virginia
and the couples farm in Wellington, The Kilkenny Insurance
Agency was born. Kilkennys logo, built around a D-ring
snaffle bit, was Lauras design.
Now
one of the top equine insurance agencies in the country,
Kilkenny provides equine insurance to horses and farms involved
in the equestrian disciplines of hunters, jumpers, equitation
and dressage. Its underwriter, The Insurance Company of
Hannover, is a well-known firm in the insurance industry
based in Omaha, Nebraska.
How
did the Whitlows, starting from scratch, build their business
to the success that it is today in a mere nine years? Their
own hard work, smarts and outstanding personal reputations
certainly had a lot to do with it. But in addition, the
Whitlows made a conscious decision to become a major factor
as both a sponsor and innovator at The Winter Equestrian
Festival.

Horse Welfare Advisers' Scheme
|
Fort
Dodge Animal Health, manufacturer of market leading horse
wormer EQUEST, has announced the continuation of its support
for the British Horse Society Riding Clubs' Horse Welfare
Advisers' Scheme for 2003. This sponsorship will allow BRC
to provide further training to members, with the aim to
provide a Horse Welfare Adviser in every affiliated Riding
Club by the end of 2005.
Horse
Welfare Advisers offer support to members of their clubs
and advice on latest practices and thinking. They are intended
to be a first port of call, not by duplicating the valuable
work of the established BHS Welfare Officers but providing
grass roots support. The BRC Training Committee feels that
this scheme is extremely important, as the infrastructure
of BRC means there is an opportunity to educate all 36,000
members in the welfare of the horse.

Natural
Alternatives For Equine Care
Natural
remedies are big business in the human world. As we
become less confident about the sources and outcomes
of traditional pharmaceutical and medical treatments,
so more and more of us are taking the natural route
to health.
The same is true in the equine world, and visitors
to the Midlands Equine Fair at the Three Counties
Showground, Malvern, on 8 and 9 March will be able
to see a range of natural remedies, solutions and
treatments at first hand.
Margrit Coates is the UK's leading animal healer who
specialises in horses, and she will be discussing
hands on healing for horses and answering questions
in the Fair's 'Meet the Experts' section.
|
Lucinda
McAlpine, the renowned owner of Brackenhill Stud, will also
be at the Midlands Equine Fair discussing her approach to
the natural rearing of horses. Over the last five years
she has developed a system of stress-free horse management.
Sue Hix of the Rosewell Shiatsu Centre will also be on hand
to explain how shiatsu can help horses. Shiatsu has been
proved to be very a very effective alternative therapy solution
to equine ailments. Said Sue: "One case that is particularly
interesting was that of a dressage horse that developed
a mysterious lameness and had been unsound for two years.
All veterinary checks were clear and the horse did have
physiotherapy but remained unsound. The horses needed and
received regular work on his back to rebalance the energy
of the kidneys and bladder and after a few months the horse
is now sound and back in full work.
As
well as including tips and advice from these experts, the
Midlands equine Fair 'Meet the Experts' area will also include
the Society of Master Saddlers, Tricia Nassau Williams who
will be available to discuss matters relating to lorinery
(bits and bitting), Kate Lugsden from Baileys Horse Feeds
who will concentrate on nutrition, Adrienne Vaughan from
the Fizz Coaching Clinic, and Wayne Preece, expert on laminitis.

Dressage Rider Gallops To The Finishing Line
|
International
dressage rider, Jane Bredin from Chippenham in Wiltshire,
is hoping to complete her first Flora London Marathon in
April at help raise funds for The Blue Cross, Britains pet
charity.
Jane, who rode at the Atlanta Olympic Games in 1996 and
was a World Equestrian Games team member in 1994, has always
supported The Blue Cross and their work caring and rehabilitating
unwanted horses and ponies. Jane is currently working with
new Dressage hopeful, Lucky Star, and plans to try him for
the Athens Olympic squad.
Jane
said: I chose to run for The Blue Cross because I
wanted to run for a charity which had the same objectives
and principles of caring for animals that I have. Running
26 miles will be a real challenge but remembering why Im
doing it will drive me on to the finishing line.
Jane
is running the 26 miles with a friend and both are looking
for support from local companies and individuals to help

The
Irish Draught Horse
The name Irish Draught may be misleading in that many
people are surprised to find that the breed is a lighter
free-moving animal than the traditional image of the
heavy horse. Nevertheless, the ancestry of the breed
goes back to the small Irish farm where the farm horse
doubled up as a hunter as well as taking the trap or
dogcart into the town. However, today the Irish Draught
is more sought after for its breeding qualities. In
England, the brood mare has been acknowledged as an
excellent dam of a hunter when mated with a thoroughbred
stallion. Now the Irish Draught stallion is being used
more and more to get extra bone and substance in the
progeny of the lighter type mare. |
The
breed has been existence for a century or more, though it
has been nearly lost on several occasions. During periods
of poverty and famine in Irish history, many breeders gave
up registering their animals and it took many hours of work
by breed enthusiasts and the Irish Horse Board to get a
new stud book started.
The horse has a graceful carriage of head and neck with
a big, kind eye, strong limbs with particularly short cannon
bones. Despite the power the horse should be free moving
and not ponderous. The feet should be like those of a hunter
and not like a cart horse. The feet are one of the most
important points and the reason why the Irish Draught is
required for the breeding of show jumpers is that they have
to withstand the concussion from jumping, often on hard
surfaces.
Horses
by our Registered Irish Draught Stallions are now well to
the fore in every discipline. With qualifying horses at
the Horse of the Year Show in the Working Hunter, Ridden
Hunter, Show Jumping and Cob categories. Our Irish Draught
stock is also consistently making best prices at sales.

BHS
Joins With Hickstead To Find Young Showing Stewards
Hickstead
and the British Horse Society are jointly considering a
scheme to find and train the show stewards of the future.
An
Apprentice Steward Scheme would seek young candidates from
British Horse Society members and non-members and these
would be asked to a selection day.
Those chosen to join the scheme will be invited to a briefing
and training day before the BHS-owned Royal International
Horse Show (July 23-27). Hickstead
show secretary Lizzie Bunn has been concerned about replacing
stewards as they retire or move out of the area. Because
of her worries, this scheme was suggested by showing director
Roger Stack, who was supported at a recent meeting by BHS
chief executive Mrs Kay Driver.
"The
whole showing structure in this country relies on volunteers,
and not enough new ones are coming forward," said Mr
Stack. "This scheme, we hope, will encourage young
people who can benefit from working with the experienced
stewards they will ultimately replace."

Legally-Blind
Rider Tory Watters Jumping The Big Jumps At The 2003 Winter
Equestrian Festival
Wellington,
Florida -- February 3, 2003 -- Many of us cannot imagine
getting on a horse under any circumstances. Some have had
bad experiences while in the saddle. Others
would only contemplate getting on a pokey horse at, let
us say, a dude ranch and walking down a well-traveled path
with a guide. But who could possibly imagine jumping a horse
over really, really big jumps with a gauzy blindfold over
their eyes? Well, one prominent, legally-blind, amateur
rider has been doing this -- and doing it successfully --
for over 20 years!
Tory
Watters was a happy, athletic, horse-crazy teenager, living
in Cincinnati with her parents, when she was diagnosed with
a brain tumor and damaged optic nerves. Tory had been riding
horses since the age of two and had been winning blue ribbons
in the childrens hunter division for many years. At
the age of 14, major headaches and blurred vision resulted
in a life-changing operation and the removal of a malignant
tumor. No follow-up radiation was required, and, luckily,
the cancer was stopped in its tracks. However, Tory was
left with no vision in her right eye and with 20/200 vision
in her left eye.
So
where did Tory go from there? Right back to what she always
loved and knew best: horses, jumping and competition. While
Tory sees life as a big, impressionist painting, she has
learned to adjust. There is nothing -- short of driving
a car --- that Tory cannot and will not do. Her positive
attitude and supportive family life have made Tory a winner
in more ways than one.
