Woof Dressage Rankings
Winners
Emile Faurie, from
Oxfordshire, has won the Woof Grand Prix rankings 2001 with 200 points
and Jane Bredin, from Wiltshire, has won the Woof Small Tour Rankings
with 185 points.
It was tight at
the top in the Grand Prix Rankings but a strong performance at the
Mercedes-Benz National Dressage Championships 2001 kept Emile in premier
position, ahead of the best of the rest - Richard Davison with 192
points and Laura Richardson with 183 points.
Emile also finished
third in the Small Tour Rankings, but Jane Bredin had built a considerable
lead. Last minute success at Saumur CDI in France served to cement
her position at the top and she finished 60 points clear of second
placed Carl Hester.
Both riders will
be asked to perform their Freestyle to Music tests at the Horse &
Hound Winter Dressage Championships, 3rd - 7th April 2002 at Solihull
Riding Club, where they will be presented with prize money, rosettes
and sashes by Rankings sponsors Woof Wear.

Lone
Ranger Loads again . . . Finally
Chuck Brazier came out to shoe our two Arabians in mid-July
this past summer. A seasoned farrier with thirty years experience,
he was so impressed with our horses' manners that after finishing
Lakota Breeze, my Angle/Arab he had some questions about training.
He had a nine-year-old thoroughbred that he could not load.
He'd had a couple seemingly competent trainers give it a go
and while they did get the horse loaded, it took hours; but
the horse didn't learn anything in the process nor did Chuck.
And Ranger still refused to get into his four-horse trailer.
The few times he had loaded it had required five big men manhandling
him into the trailer. It was the same coming home from the
racetrack two years earlier. It had been a real ordeal. Chuck
was exasperated. We set up an appointment for the following
week.
|
I arrived at the
stable in the late afternoon. The wind was gusting heavily, which
did not bode well for a touch loading situation. The trailer was parked
in the middle of a large corralled area on flat ground. It was an
older four-horse in-line unit, which could have had more headroom
for a big horse as I sensed Ranger, was. I was then
introduced to Ranger in the barn and immediately took a liking to
him. He was a massive 16-2 black thoroughbred with a white sock front
and back and a bright white blaze on his intelligent looking head.
I led him into the center aisle and we got acquainted. He seemed to
enjoy my touch, especially the eye rubbing and lowering of the head,
which he complied to happily. I then drove him in and out of a stall
from both sides. Certain he understood the driving procedure perfectly;
we then proceeded to the trailer.

It is also hoped
the campaign will help to remove the anomaly which leaves horse riders

Innovative
Fluorescent Polartec® Fleece Horsewear
Concern
continues to grow over the unacceptable level of road accidents
involving horses. As traffic increases so does the danger
and high visibility fluorescent clothing is now no less essential
than a hard hat for riding on the road.
The products
currently available have two drawbacks. They are made of stiff,
uncomfortable plastic fabrics and they are an extra item to
remember every time you tack up.
|
Equafleece, a company
based in Tavistock, have solved both these problems by commissioning
Malden Mills to make Polartec®200 with water repellency in fluorescent
yellow.
Saddlepads and
exercise sheets in this fabric, combining the benefits of Polartec®200
with the ultimate in high visibility, were launched by Equafleece
at their stand at the Royal Cornwall Show in mid-September and have
almost immediately become their biggest selling product. They can
be seen on the company¹s website at www.equafleece.co.uk
and purchased by credit card on telephone no 01822 810272.
Polartec® 200
is fully water-repellent, twice as warm as wool and four times as
warm as "thermal" cotton products. It was developed for
wear by sailors to minimise ther build up of sweat inside oilskins
and therefore has unique wicking ability which means that it dries
sweat as fast as a horse produces it.

Training Mythunderstandings
- Games People Play
Close up, horse shows look like serious business. They're
certainly business because their economics affect an awful
lot of different people in a lot of different ways. For breeders
and trainers and show managers and hamburger slingers and
farriers and lots of other people, horse shows are a big investment
both literally and figuratively.
|
They're certainly serious because look
at what a big thing so many people make of them in their lives. Of
course winning or not can make a big difference in the value of an
individual horse or the ability of a farm to sell horses or lessons
or whatever they have. But winning or not can make a big difference
in how a lot of people go home feeling about themselves.
Horse shows are a big ego thing. If you
win you feel pretty positive about yourself and your horse. You feel
like you must be doing something right and you especially like the
part that someone else--the judge--thinks so, too. (Boy, that judge
sure saw things right today.) If you lose, your self esteem is damaged.
You wonder if you're ever going to amount to anything or why your
horse is so dumb. (Boy, that judge was blind today.)
But if you stand back a ways and look
at horse shows from a different perspective, you can see they're only
games that people like to play with their horses. A bunch of people
get together, make up some rules, and then play that game until some
one of them starts to win the game all the time. So then somebody
else decides they need to change the rules so more people or different
people can win and they start all over again with a new set of rules.
And so on.

What is new at the ERC?
The news is out, we have spent the last
year collaborating resources with the University of Guelph to result
in a combined research approach that will better benefit horses and
horse owners.

Equine enthusiasts wanting to learn more about their favourite animal
will be able to launch into the cyberspace of learning opportunities.
The Equine Research Centre along with the Office of Open Learning
at the University of Guelph are pleased to announce that funding has
been received from CanAdapt to help in the creation of five web-based
modules in equine science. This series of courses will cover many
of the basics to help horseowners and employers develop better care
and management of their horses. Up-to-date research findings from
equine researchers at The University of Guelph, The Equine Research
Centre and other research facilities world-wide will be incorporated
