BHS Campaign on Riding Hats
VAT
At the last budget, the Chancellor decided to remove VAT from cycling helmets,
but chose to ignore riding hats. Children's riding hats do not attract VAT, but
adult hats do. |
Second hand hats
As riding hats are expensive, do not be tempted to purchase a second hand one.
It may seem like an ideal money saving idea, but buying a second hand hat could
cost you your life. Riding is a high risk sport and it is vital that a hat
which complies with the current safety standard is worn. It is impossible to
tell with a second hand hat whether it has been in an accident before and if
so, if it has any cracks or damage done to it. If a hat is damaged and someone
is wearing it when they fall off, it will provide virtually no protection for
their head.

Buy a Pony a Collar
The number of ponies killed on the roads in the
New Forest last year showed an encouraging decrease compared to 1999.
Says Dave Guy, Field Officer for the ILPH
(International League for the Protection of Horses), "The reason that the
number of ponies killed in the forest fell from 100 in 1999 to 78 last year
must be put down to the fact that a lot of them have now been fitted with
reflective collars." |
"The sad news is that over 50% of the
vehicles involved in the reported road traffic accidents with ponies last year
were driven by local motorists - so we are asking everybody who drives in the
forest to please slow down !"
The reflective collars cost £7 each and so
far only 22% of the ponies that frequent the parts of the forest where there
are roads, are wearing them. So, to protect a few more ponies this Autumn as
the evenings start to draw in, the ILPH is asking for donations to buy those
unprotected ponies a reflective collar each.

The Old Place, Mount Holly, Arkansas
On hard ground and blazing heat, Dr. Jim McCall
and his amazing 4 year old palomino stallion, Tippy Toe Plan, won the title of
Palomino World Champion Junior Cutting Horse in Tulsa, Oklahoma . The team were
the last to ride in the group of cattle. Searching for three good cows to
impress the judges was not an easy feat. However, this horse and rider team are
always up to put on a good show. They trapped three consecutive cows in the
middle and Tippy dropped down and matched the moves of the cows step by step.
In spite of the limitations of the hard surface, Tippy received a round of
applause from the crowd for his characteristic crowd-pleasing style of cutting.
|
The World Championship title was the first major
win for the team. Dr. McCall has been training horses for over 40 years but the
last 30 years he spent as a college professor teaching horse training and
management.

BHS Pleads With Drivers
Following yet another serious accident involving a
horse and rider, this time in Richmond Park, London on Thursday 9 August, the
British Horse Society is pleading with motorists to be tolerant and considerate
towards any rider they encounter. |
Nicola Fox, 18 was teaching a group of young
riders in the park when a van careered into two of the horses, killing one and
leaving the other seriously injured. Nicola was crushed under the weight of the
dying horse, and had to be freed by paramedics. The driver fled on foot, but
the police were later questioning a man about the incident.
The British Horse Society estimate that there are
over 3000 accidents a year involving horses on the roads, but the worrying fact
in this case is that the accident happened in a royal park.

Learning About
Biomechanics
by Kimberly Cruser,
Ventura Chapter, California Dressage Society
Organizer shares about the SportBallet Rider
Biomechanics Clinic and USDF University accredited lecture given to members of
the Ventura and Pomona California Dressage Society chapters in Dec 2000
For those of us on the continuing search for improvements to our riding skills,
the USDF University accredited lecture given by Mr. Stephen Apatow to members
of the Ventura and Pomona CDS chapters in Dec 2000, was a great opportunity to
learn more about the biomechanics of the human body and the muscle control and
tone needed to ride well.. |
Mr. Apatow gave an in-depth background on his own
journey in other disciplines to find a base from which the human body can
ideally work from, regardless of the sport. Ballet became the basis for his
approach and understanding of how the human body should function. During the
seminar, he gave the participants exercises with which to discover the current
range of motion they had, and then ways to further develop towards the ideal.
This was then carried out in more detail during the individual consultations
that he gave.

Rope Halters
This halter is made of rope with knots and is
softer than the normal halter, but due to its smaller diameter more effective.
With the wide nylon webhalters, horses tend to lean on them instead of
respecting them. When the horse leans on the rope halter he applies pressure on
himself and learns to yield from his own pressure - naturally.
These halters are durable, machine washable and a
great tool for leading and boxing difficult horses.

"Botulism In Horses"
by Morgan Crane
During my final year of university studying Bachelor of Systems Agriculture
majoring in Equine Studies I undertook a project which identified problems
within the horse industry. Botulism in horses is an issue that rears its head
every few years resulting in major mortality.
Only when outbreaks of endemic disease receive
publicity do we become aware of the problem.Horses have not been considered as
livestock by the NSW Agriculture thus resulting in little information on the
occurrences of diseases in horses.
Botulism has been a silent and deadly disease that
has been around for many years, not only in horses but in humans and cattle as
well. Botulism is not only an Australian disease, but also affects horses from
all over the world. The clinical signs of the disease give horse's pain and
depressions.
What is Botulism?
Botulism is a disease that affects not only horses
but also a wide variety of animals. It is a tiny microorganism that has been a
silent, but deadly killer, the casual agent identified as Clostridium
botulinum. It is closely related to the bacterium that causes tetanus only it
is more deadly. As with the tetanus bacteria, which are always present in the
environment, so it is with Clostridium botulinum. Once the horses have the
toxins in the system the incubation period for the organism is from 24 hours to
several days. When it is within the horses system, the toxins reproduce
repeatedly and rapidly in the horse's gut.
Eight distinct toxins of botulism have been
identified, they are A, B, Ca, Cb, D, E, F and G. Some bacterial subtypes can
produce more than one type of toxin. Types C and D are most common in
Australia. The organism seems to grow best in neutral or alkaline conditions.
It grows and produces toxins in anaerobic (minus oxygen) environments, such as
both decaying vegetable matter and animal carcasses.

The Bowmore
Blair Castle International Horse Trials & Country Fair
Blair Atholl, Perthshire
Thursday 23rd - Sunday 26th August 2001 |
Boost For Show Jumping At Blair
The popular showjumping classes at the Bowmore
Blair Castle International Horse Trials and Country Fair received a cash boost
recently.
Irish company, Nutri-science is putting up
£1000 for sponsorship of the Blair Castle Open Championship on Sunday,
26th August.
The £900 cash plus £100 worth of
products represents the biggest prize money awarded for a class at Blair Castle
and, along with major sponsorship from local hotels and businesses, puts the
three days of BSJA among the most lucrative in the Scottish showjumping
circuit.
Sandra Low-Mitchell from Balcormo in Fife runs the
competition in the magnificent setting of the white-walled castle and is
expecting record entries of around 1500 again this year. In 2000 an extra ring
had to be build to accommodate the massive entry.
Sandra, herself a top class showjumper, with a
string of horses, swears by the joint supplement, Arthri-aid supplied by
Nutri-science. She said, "I have found the equine supplement excellent,
not only for older horses, but also for youngsters which are growing fast and
for horses which are jumping on hard ground."
