New
Prebiotic From Baileys Horse Feeds
Food
for the "good" bacteria
As autumn turns to winter many horses will, by necessity,
be experiencing changes in their diet and routines. Hay, or
other forage alternatives, will increasingly replace grass,
and compound feed may be introduced or increased to maintain
condition. Whilst we endeavour to make these changes gradually,
the microbial population of a horse's gut may still be disrupted
resulting in digestive upsets and associated under performance.
|
New Baileys Digest
Plus is a prebiotic intended to help restore the natural bacterial
content of the gut and with it, overall good health in the horse.
The equine gut
plays host to a multitude of species of bacteria, some of great benefit
to the horse and some potentially pathogenic. Baileys Digest Plus
contains short chain fructo-oligosaccharides (scFOS) which are made
up of molecules of fructose and glucose. The bonds joining them can
only be broken down by the beneficial bacteria and not by the horse
itself, so Digest Plus acts as a food source for the good bacteria
allowing them to flourish at the expense of any "undesirable"
species.
Loose droppings
or diarrhoea are a clear sign that the balance between "good"
and "bad" bacterial species has been disrupted. Stress,
from competing, travelling or changes in routine, increases the passage
of food through the gut and with it the bacteria. The content of the
diet, or changes made to it, could allow pathogenic species to flourish
at the expense of the beneficial ones. Baileys Digest Plus can help
to reverse these imbalances by "feeding" the good bacteria
encouraging them to proliferate and keep the pathogenic ones at bay.

The
Florida Endurance Riding Association Far
Out Forest Ride
The Far
Out Forest hosted by Ken Anderson was as usual a great ride.
The trails were FUN and extremely well marked. The Spaghetti
dinner was excellent. A nice warm meal before the cool
night mist set in.
|
The ride meeting
was direct and to the point which gave the riders time to catch up
with each other. The whole Far Out Forest crew did a fantastic
job. Nancy our timer, what would we do without her keeping the
riders moving in and out. The Vets were ill but still were committed
to doing their job, and they did an excellent job. Volunteers
from check-in to check-out, what a great bunch of people. Keeping
the ride moving smoothly. If you missed this ride they
will be hosting another one in February of 2002.

British
Charity Saving Lives Of Afghan Animals
The
Brooke Hospital for Animals is providing vital veterinary
treatment for the thousands of animals brought into Pakistan
by their Afghan refugee owners. The mobile team is based at
the Pajaggi equine trading camp on the outskirts of Peshawar.
Operational at the camp since March 2001, the team has been
in even greater demand with the recent influx of refugees
and their animals.
|
Regularly treating
more than 150 horses every day, the vets see a wide range of serious
conditions resulting from lack of food during the long, arduous journey
over the pass from Afghanistan. Many animals arrive at the camp malnourished,
lame, dehydrated and exhausted. Nearly all have raw, infected wounds
on their backs where the pack, containing all the family's possessions,
has rubbed the skin away.
Whilst predominately
an equine welfare charity, the Brooke Hospital mobile team at Pajaggi
is giving veterinary treatment to any animal in need. Some owners
have brought with them their herds of goats, whilst others have camels.
Any animal in need is assured of care and attention.

Happy Horse Hay Steamer
Attention! Do
You Soak Hay, Does Your Horse Suffer From COPD Or Dust And Hay Allergies?
Then take a look
at the Happy Horse Hay Steamer
This easy to use
system is designed to do the same AND MORE as soaking hay without
all the inconvenience of dustbins full of water and heavy wet hay
nets to hang up. It is the ideal solution for horses with dust allergies
and respiratory problems.
There is an ever
increasing number of horses that require soaked hay all year round.
This arduous job usually entails soaking nets of hay in gallons of
unreusable water (Soaked hay water is classed as effluent and should
not be discharged down drains) and then struggling to hang them up.
In winter this is an even less appealing task when you end up with
cold hands and dripping wet clothing. Added to this is the possibility
of exposing our horses to Bacteria, Fungal Spores and Dust Mites not
killed by soaking plus the expense of supplementing the vital minerals
leached out of the hay during the soaking process.
As with most ideas
this one came about through having to do this job ourselves.

Probiotics in Horses: Research is the Key to Unlocking Their Potential
Probiotic therapy
is emerging as a popular and potentially valuable tool in the practice
of human and veterinary medicine. Probiotic therapy may be useful
in the treatment or prevention of a number of disorders, particularly
diarrheic disease. Still, clinical application is difficult due to
a lack of research in horses and questionable quality control of commercial
products. Dr. Scott Weese of the Department of Clinical Studies at
the University of Guelph is burning to build on his current research
of probiotics in horses. His work is contributing to clearly determining
the appropriate organisms, appropriate doses and conditions that are
potentially treatable with probiotics.
The appealing properties
of probiotics include the ability to reduce antibiotic use, the apparently
very high index of safety, and the public's perception about "natural"
or "alternative" therapies. The definition of a probiotic
was refined in 1998 to: "living microorganisms, which upon digestion
in certain number, exert health benefit beyond inherent basic nutrition".
Regardless of the definition, certain criteria have been developed

A
Horse,of Course with Don Blazer
"I'm
a mini, I'm a mini," Walter, a horse, of course, shouted
from his stall.
"No
you're not," I corrected. "You are a Quarter Horse."
"No,
I'm a mini," he insisted, pointing his left foreleg at
a resin model sculpted in the form of Walter. There was pride
in his eyes. "I'm a mini," he said again.
"No,"
I responded. "You are an American Quarter Horse who just
happens to have an 19-inch model made in your image."

British Equine Event 2001
3 & 4th
November 2000 - Don't Miss It!
LEADING LEG EXPERTS
Top equestrian experts
will be on hand at the British Equine Event, 3-4th November
at the NAC Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire, to offer information
and advice on a range of ‘lower leg’ issues.
Taking part in the series of "Talking
Horses" seminars, the speakers will provide a comprehensive
guide to treating, recognising and preventing common lower leg
ailments as well as more serious and rare complaints.
|
Simon Curtis, Fellow of the Worshipful
Company of Farriers, has been practising on an international level
since 1972. He will be discussing the importance of foot trimming
and horseshoe fit for general health and the correction of limb imbalances.
Simon’s talk will focus on the link between leg conformation,
hoof shape and soundness and how good farriery can remedy lameness.
Richard Payne, one of the country’s
most experienced equine leg specialists, will provide a user-friendly
guide to disease and disorders of the lower leg. He will discuss the
leg’s structure and function before going on to diagnostic investigation
to help you recognise problems as they develop. Richard will also
deal with common ailments such as fractures and infected joints and
