Samsung
Super League News : Top-Hats and Tails At Traditional
Dublin!
The
Samsung Super League road show comes to Dublin next
week with France still holding the narrowest of leads
over the Irish while the British continue to gather
pace. This promises to be one of the most exciting
legs of the series to date, with the host team determined
to oust the French from the head of the pack and the
British in bullish form after their success in Hickstead.
Dublin
is a heady mixture of horses, heroes and haute couture
with emphasis placed on tradition and judges, officials
and special guests will be attired in top-hats and
tails while the ladies will don their finest attire
as the teams battle it out for the Aga Khan Cup on
Friday August 8th.
|
Its
a festival of all that is good in equestrian sport and,
after 130 years, it claims a special place in the Irish
summer calendar. The first Dublin Horse Show
was staged in 1868 when hunting horses competed over the
"high leap", the "wide leap" and stone
walls on the Lawns of Leinster House, now Government Buildings,
in the heart of the city. After three days of competition,
sheep-farmer Richard Flynn from County Roscommon in the
west of Ireland was awarded the worlds first show
jumping championship title. The event moved to the Royal
Dublin Society Showgrounds in Ballsbridge in 1881 and it
was here, in 1926, that the first Nations Cup competition
took place with Switzerland claiming the honours.

Eventing World Cup News
Leslie
Law (GBR), riding the 11-year old gelding Shear L'eau,
won the 11th leg of the FEI Eventing World Cup held
at the Lulworth International Horse Trials (GBR) from
25 through 27 July. The pair, whose final result was
52.1, became convincing winners after performing a
good Dressage test (45.1) and scoring only one penalty
point in the Cross Country for exceeding the time
allowed.
The
twelfth World Cup leg held at the same time at Morgan
Park, Warwick (AUS) was none the less exciting.
Megan
Jones (AUS), riding the 12-year old stallion Kirby
Park Irish Hallmark, won the qualifier with remarkable
final 44.26 points. Her outstanding Dressage result
of 38.26 and her clear Show Jumping round led her
to undisputed victory despite the 6 Cross Country
time penalties. Megan also competed in the first Australian
World Cup qualifier at Werribee Park, Melbourne, where,
despite a very good Dressage test, she placed 4th.
She is the third Australian rider after Philip Dutton
and Nick Roe to score 30 points counting towards the
final standings, which guarantees her presence at
the Final.

British
Horse Society Ragwort survey reveals disturbing new
figures on horse fatalities
New
figures show that about 6,500 horses and ponies died
in 2002 after eating the lethal ragwort plant.
The
figures, reached after a survey by The British Horse
Society (BHS) and the British Equestrian Veterinary
Association (BEVA), came as a shock. In 2001 similar
research put the figure at only 500. |
Veterinary
surgeons, all members of BEVA, were this year asked to complete
a questionnaire in a bid to discover the true numbers of
animals suffering from suspected or confirmed ragwort poisoning.
Results have shown that, nationwide, numbers far outstrip
the conservative estimate given by Dr Derek Knottenbelt
in 2001. Dr Knottenbelt, from the University of Liverpool,
suggested at the time that some 500 horses had died from
ragwort poisoning and he expected that figure to double
in 2002. However, on being asked how many suspected or confirmed
cases the vets had dealt with last year the estimate rose
to over 6,500.

Successful
Adoption Day for the Brumby Protection Group
The Brumby Protection Groups first Adoption Day at Glenworth
Valley, Sydney Australia, was a complete success, with
all of the young Walers going to new homes. Prices were
high considering the depressed market for horses right
now due to the drought, thus showing the interest that
Australians have in both brumbies, and Waler's.
The
horses came from an outback station near Alice Springs,
and were trucked nearly four thousand kilometres to
reach the coast where they could be safe. A further
sixty young Walers are still in need of a home, and
as soon as Brumby Protection Group can find the funds
to get them off the property where they are being "bushed",
they will be brought to Sydney and trained as saddle
horses.

British
Horse Society Ragwort campaign gallops on
Following
the extremely successful BHS press conference to launch
the draft code of practice to control the spread of
Common Ragwort, held at the Royal International Horse
Show last week (24 July) with Alun Michael, Minister
for Rural Affairs and Minister for the Horse, the Society's
campaign has received unprecedented media coverage.
Four
major national newspapers, national radio, regional
television and radio and numerous local newspapers,
to say nothing of the equestrian media, have provided
coverage of the campaign which is currently enjoying
high profile political attention through the BHS Private
Members' Bill and draft code of practice. |
The
PMB provides for a statutory code of practice which will
be admissible in evidence and the draft document, launched
at the press conference by Alun Michael, will provide a
strategy and guidelines for landowners and occupiers to
comply with the Weeds Act 1959 in controlling the spread
of Common Ragwort seeds.

Great
Britain Win Super League Nations Cup At Hickstead
|
A
triumphant British team stormed to victory on home ground
in Friday's Samsung Super League Nations Cup held at the
All England Jumping Course, Hickstead. Following a morning
of torrential rain, the sun eventually broke through in
time for the eight participating teams to parade.
Drawn
first to go, Nick Skelton riding John and Lisa Hales' 9
year-old bay stallion, Arko III, set the team in good stead
with a superb clear round. First round clears also followed
from Richard Davenport and Martin Dawes' Dutch bred gelding
Luc and Robert Smith riding his own Irish bred bay gelding,
Mr Springfield. Scott Smith with Mike Dawsons' Cabri d'Elle
lowered just one pole, leaving Great Britain leading on
a zero score after the first round.
In
a nailbiting second round which almost ended in a jump-off,
Nick and Arko again produced another faultless round with
Scott and Richard both lowering a fence each. A mistake
from France's Michel Robert at the last fence, and it was
clear that Great Britain could not be beaten, therefore
Robert and Mr Springfield did not need to jump in the second
round.

Breakthrough
in nutrition helps horses with respiratory problems
A
new respiratory support formula, WINERGY VENTIL-ATEä,
is providing a breakthrough for horses at risk from
respiratory challenges such as Recurrent Airway Obstruction
(RAO).
Developed
as a result of a massive research project conducted
by the WALTHAM® Equine Studies Group, in collaboration
with the Animal Health Trust (AHT), WINERGY VENTIL-ATEä
is the only equine respiratory supplement to have been
proven in published scientific trials. |
Horses
breathe over 70,000 litres of air a day and even more if
exercised. A healthy respiratory system is vital for overall
well-being, yet a number of environmental factors such as
pollens, dusts, atmospheric pollutants and stabling regimens
may severely compromise the condition of your horses
airways. The lungs normally provide natural defences to
combat these respiratory hazards including the secretion
of mucus and also by the specific production of antioxidants.
Work at the AHT in collaboration with WALTHAM® showed
that horses with RAO have much lower levels of a key antioxidant
than healthy horses.

Electronic
Results On The Rise
On
its 150th anniversary the Upperville Colt and Horse
Show moved into the twenty first century by submitting
results to USA Equestrian electronically, a first
for Upperville and show secretary Jonathan Rabon.
Since
December 1, 2002, over 420 additional horse shows
have taken advantage of USA Equestrians electronic
results option and earned over $18,000 in rebates
on competition fees.
|
Competitions
can realize a short-term benefit when they qualify for the
$50 rebate, but the long-term return is better service to
our members, reported Cheryll Frank, Director of Sport
Data. The new USAE database powers the website, so
points, results and rankings are visible on the internet
the minute the files are posted. Members can see their rankings
change throughout the day, and point corrections can be
performed and viewed while the member is on the phone. USAE
staff still has to proof the data submitted by the shows
for accuracy, but our long term goal is to move the rankings
and results as close to real time as possible.

Chill
out with Toggi
With
the British weather being so unpredictable, Toggi knows
that long-sleeve t-shirts, sweatshirts and knitwear
are must have items for all year round, with the secret
to staying warm lying in multiple layers. With this
in mind, its 2003 Autumn/Winter collection has been
extended to include some innovative knitwear to keep
you warm and looking good, plus some additions to its
long sleeve t-shirt range and sweatshirt range.
New
to the range and crossing the bridge between t-shirt
and sweatshirt, the Franklin is a 100 % cotton pique
shirt with twill trim, button placket and contrast embroidery.
For the perfect winter t-shirt, Toggi's Ascot style
is still a winner. Made from 92% cotton and 8% elastene,
the Ascot is cut for ladies and features long sleeves,
a round neck with a contrast inside neck panel and tonal
embroidery.
For a slightly thicker garment that's perfect for keeping
the morning chill away, Toggi has introduced the Jutland
and the Rockland. The Jutland is a unisex bonded tunic
half zip sweatshirt featuring a contrast colour collar,
waist adjuster and zipped pockets and is available in
navy/denim, aubergine/grape and denim/navy colourways.
The Rockland is a ladies hooded full zip sweatshirt,
made of double- sided knit bonded jersey with ribbed
hem and cuffs available in contrasting colourways of
black/raspberry, raspberry/sweetpea and duck egg blue/petrol
blue.

Jumping - Kerrygold Grand Prix League - Moloney Takes
North Wexford
NOT
EVERY rider feels comfortable on a new horse, and
very few win on their first time out.
And
the number of competitors who win a Grand Prix with
their first ride on a new horse must be even fewer.
But
Kilkenny's Eddie Moloney did just that today (Saturday),
when he took John Widger's <Kilmoylan Warrier>
(sp) into the sunlit sand arena of Barnadown Stud
for the North Wexford leg of the Kerrygold Grand Prix
League.
First
in, and first clear, of the show, Eddie led the whole
way through and the combination proved to be unbeatable.<I
am just amazed, > said Eddie afterwards. <It's
not the kind of thing you expect, but I'm delighted,
nevertheless.>
