Wins $10,000 Open Mini Prix at Manchester & The Mountains

Dorset, VT—August 1, 2003—Chris Kappler of Pittstown,
NJ won the $10,000 Open Mini Prix at Manchester & The Mountains
Horse Show aboard Profox, owned by Jorgen Winroth. The event took
place today during the fourth week of the Vermont Summer Festival,
July 9-August 10, held at the Harold Beebe Farm in East Dorset,
VT.
Under heavy rains, Kappler, who will represent the United States
at this month’s Pan American Games in Santo Domingo, and Profox
were one of only two horse-and-rider combinations out of the 18
who competed to produce a clear round with no time penalties over
course designer Ken Krome’s first round course made up of 12
numbered fences and 14 jumping efforts.
Going
eleventh in the jumping order, Courtney Phibbs aboard Snepts, owned
by Court Lin Frae Farm, was the first rider to turn in a clear round
over the first round course and immediately competed over the jump-off
course. Over the shortened jump-off course, Phibbs dropped one rail
to give her a four fault score in a time of 38.335 seconds.
Phibb’s lead held through the next few riders until Kappler,
who went sixteenth in the order, posted the day’s second clear
round over the first round course. Going immediately on to the jump-off,
Kappler turned in another clear performance in a time of 36.735
seconds which earned him the win.
Brian Walker rode After Shock, owned by Winterhaven Stables, to
finish third posting a clear round performance in the first round,
but encored two penalties. Fourth place was awarded to Lexington,
owned by Jorge Meyer and ridden by Marilly Meyer of Mexico.
Later in the day in the Grand Prix Ring, Kenzie Snyder of West Chester,
PA, who won the $10,000 Show Jumping Hall of Fame Junior Jumper
Classic Presented by Nutraceutical International Inc. at the Valley
Classic on July 27, earned a win in the High Junior/Amateur-Owner
Jumper class. Snyder bested a field of 13 horse-and-rider combinations
to earn the win despite the rainy conditions. Sarah Segal aboard
Go West, owned by Nancy and Ribert Segal finished second.
Courtney McCay of Ocala, FL continued to have success in the equitation
divisions winning the overall blue ribbon in the Washington International
Horse Show (WIHS) Equitation Classic. Maggie DeFillipp of Far Hills,
NJ finished second overall.
Julie Welles of West Simsbury, CT topped the field of 15 to take
top honors in the ASPCA Horsemanship Class. Dorothy Grubb of Wellington,
FL finished in second place.
In
the hunter rings, Megan Young of Jacksonville, FL rode Grace, owned
by Manhattan Mortgage to win the Championship in the Small Junior
Hunter Division for riders 16-17 years of age. Alesandra Perna teamed
up with Splendid, owned by Nancy Shainburg, to earn Championship
honors in the Small Junior Hunter Division for riders under the
age of 15. Kenzie Snyder was back in the winner’s circle, this
time in the hunter rings where she rode Milltown to the Championship
for the Large Junior Hunter Division for riders 16-17 years of age.
Dorothy Grubb rode Cill Dara for Anne Whitehead to win Championship
honors in the Large Junior Hunter Division for riders under the
age of 15.
The
Vermont Summer Festival is New England’s largest “AA”
rated hunter/jumper horse show. This year’s event includes
five USET-recognized $35,000 Grand Prix to be held on the last day
of each show and five $10,000 Mini Prix to be held on the Friday
of each show. Each of the five weeks also features a $10,000 Show
Jumping Hall Of Fame High Junior/Amateur-Owner Jumper class, part
of the Show Jumping Hall of Fame Jumper Classic Series which determines
which junior and amateur/owner riders will qualify to ride at the
2003 National Horse Show.
