British
Brilliant on Home Ground at Hickstead!
The
British stormed to victory on their home ground
in Hickstead today, catapulting themselves into
third position on the Samsung Super League leaderboard
and firmly underlining their return to the top level
of international show jumping.
Their
hunger for a win had been clear since early in the
season and, despite a disappointing result in Aachen,
they looked to be ever-improving in recent months
but today they were simply the best, although they
were almost forced into a jump-off with France.
The
French were unlucky when a mistake from Michel Robert
and Galet DAuzay at the very last fence denied
them a two-way jump-off with the eventual winners
and it was a close-fought thing right to the end.
|
As
has happened so many times over the years, the derby-style
Hickstead fences produced plenty of surprises and Belgiums
chances were shattered when Dirk Demeersmans Clinton
simply refused to take on the water-jump and then Jean Claude
Vangeenberghe also suffered elimination as Richebourg appeared
to become anxious after clearing the water and jammed on
the brakes at the following double.

Jumping - Ireland Tie With France At Hickstead
IN
WHAT always promised to be a needle match between
France and Ireland, with only half a point separating
the two nations at the top of the Samsung Super League,
Hickstead did not disappoint today (Friday).
Home
team Britain (fourth in the Super League) led the
competition at the halfway mark on a zero score, with
Ireland and France tying for Second, each with four
faults. Cian
O'Connor and Waterford Crystal racked up Ireland's
only double clear to keep the team in contention in
the second round, while Billy Twomey and Kevin Babington
incurred four faults apiece. Peter Charles improved
on his first round total of eight faults by having
only one pole down in the second round.
The
final result saw Gt. Britain return a total of eight
faults, while Ireland and Britain tied for second
place on 12 faults apiece. The Netherlands took Fourth
with 16 faults. Please click

European
Dressage Title Up For Grabs
Final
declarations of horses and riders for the European Dressage
Championships to be held at Hickstead, Sussex on 14th
- 17th August indicate a wide-open field, with the very
real possibility of the title going to a non-German.
There are question marks over the participation of Ulla
Salzgeber's Rusty, pending the results of a second sample
drug test, and the absence of Nadine Capellman's Farbenfroh
from the German squad leaves the door wide open for
other strong contenders. |
Anky
van Grunsven recently completed her qualification for the
Championships with Gestion Salinero and comes to the event
with brand new music for the Freestyle written by Cees Slings,
the well-known music writer who also co-wrote the Championships'
theme music with rock musician, Mike Rutherford. Spanish
rider, Beatrice Ferrar-Salat and Beauvalais will be strong
contenders having clinched silver at the WEG, and the USA's
Lisa Wilcox and Relevant will be worth watching. The Germans
now have until 1st August to name their final team members.

the Echt show to provide two days of top quality competition
farriery.Conditions
at ILPH Belwade Farm, Aboyne on Sunday 13th July,
the second day of the farriers' competition were,
it has to be said, hot, hot, hot.
The

was very hot. According to the judge, Mark Caldwell
FWCF of Eurohoof from Cheshire, he had a very hard
job deciding on the winners because the standard of

Jumping - Ireland Gear Up For Vital Battle At Hickstead
LAGGING
just half a point behind the leaders France, Ireland
will compete at the Samsung Super League competition
in Hickstead, England, tomorrow (Friday) at 2.15 pm.
A
win for Ireland here would take them to the top of
the league table, which features the best eight show
jumping teams in the world. A bad performance, however,
could result in a drop of several places, from which
they may find it hard to recover.
Ireland
won the British Nations Cup at Hickstead in 2000 and
2001, and were just a tantalising 1.24 seconds behind
winners Germany last year.
Following
Hickstead, the next Samsung Super League clash will
be at the Dublin Horse Show on August 8.

Field Goes Global!
A
field in Hickstead is an unlikely site for global communications,
but, as journalists from around the world gather there
to report on the European Dressage Championships, high
tech preparations are under way to ensure the news gets
out! |
It
is the first time in sixteen years these Championships have
been held in Great Britain, and at the centre of the communications
infrastructure is Cavendish Communications. A local telecommunications
firm based in Newhaven, their equipment and expertise will
allow journalists from around the world to file copy and
pictures without leaving the showground. Visiting media
representatives using both digital and analogue equipment
will be able to take advantage of the latest in technology.
Although basic facilities such as telephone lines, electricity
and water are laid on to the site, everything else including
the computers, handsets, fax machines and related equipment
has to be brought in, installed and linked up to the high
speed ISDN lines and the outside world. Nearly 100 man hours
and 700 meters of cable will be used in setting up the press
office alone.

Equestrian
Art at Burghley House
In
time for the Burghley Horse Trials, a small exhibition of
equestrian paintings and drawings from the Burghley House
Collection will be on view in the magnificent Great Hall.
The exhibition gives visitors a chance to see some exceptional
equestrian art by some of the best known artists in this
field including Henry Alken Jnr., John Ferneley Snr., and
John Frederick Herring, which are not usually on view in
the State Rooms. Due to the Cecil familys association
with racing, this theme dominates the exhibition and among
the paintings on view many are of race horses as well as
hunting scenes and the Burghley Horse Trials. The paintings
cover the period from the early 19th Century to the present
day.

From Royal Welsh Show
Massai farmers entertain crowds at Lantra and develop
their skills
A group of young African visitors from Massai farming
families performed a crowd-stopping routine of traditional
song and dance from their native Eastern Africa when
they visited the Lantra stand at the Royal Welsh Show.
Members of the group were fascinated by a demonstration
on the stand by Graham Butt of Llwynon Saddlery, Trecastle,
Powys. Graham was demonstrating the hand-stitching skills
he uses to create top quality saddles and other goods.
The Massai visitors compared Graham's stitching with
that on their own belts and costumes, before having
a go at some stitching themselves.

FEI
Eventing World Cup resumes after a Month's Break
After
a month's break, the FEI Eventing World Cup will
resume during the weekend of 25 - 27 July. Two qualifiers
will be held simultaneously at Lulworth (GBR) and
Warwick (AUS).
|
Lulworth
(GBR) - The eleventh leg and third British qualifier will
take from 25 through 27 July at the Lulworth International
Horse Trials (GBR). This accolade puts Lulworth, which began
20 years ago, alongside the top events in the British Eventing
calendar. Fifty
riders representing 12 nations (Australia, Belgium, Bermuda,
Germany, Great Britain, Ireland, Italy, Portugal, the Netherlands
Antilles, New Zealand, Spain and Sweden) are expected to
compete at Lulworth.
Warwick
(AUS) - The twelfth leg and second Australian qualifier
of the FEI Eventing World Cup will take place at Morgan
Park, Warwick from 26 - 27 July. As the format of WC qualifiers
is similar to the one to be implemented at the 2004 Athens
Olympic Games, a Chinese delegation representing the Shunyi
Management Committee of Olympic Venues Mission, will be
present at the event to look at the facilities and training
venues to help in the preparation for the 2008 Beijing Olympic
Games.

Inmates
are the Worlds Best Dressage Horses
Hotel
bookings take on a new light where Linda Short is concerned.
Her clients have four legs not two, and have many special
requirements. This year she will 'up sticks' from her
home in Wool, Dorset, and relocate to a field in Sussex
for two weeks in order to arrange the accommodation
for some very important equine visitors. For the first
time in 16 years the European Dressage Championships
are being held in Great Britain, and top riders from
as far a field as Japan and Australia are planning to
attend. Closer to home, this is also the last opportunity
for our own national riders, and other nations, to qualify
for the 2004 Olympics so tension will be high. |
Linda,
a Patients Affairs Manager at Poole Hospital, has been Stable
Manager for Dressage at Hickstead, almost since its inception
in 1993. 'Volunteered' by her daughter, Twiggy, when she
was employed by Show Director Dane Rawlins as a groom, and
who confesses, "Dane was looking for someone to manage
the stabling at Hickstead, so of course, being the ever
helpful employee, I said, my mum could do that!"
"And the rest" comments Linda dryly, but with
a sparkle in her eye "is history. Together Twiggy and
I take up residence in a caravan which becomes our home
for the duration of the show."
This year is, however, by far the largest, and most prestigious
competition the venue has presented, and Linda's responsibilities
are quite daunting. The stable compound affectionately known
as 'Linda Land' provides five star accommodation for horses
whose combined value could probably purchase the most exclusive
hotel in the world twice over!

The
Lure Of The Hamptons & Horses For Melissa Cohn
Business, Riding and Sponsorships Make a Good Match
In the Hamptons
It
began with Melissa Cohn, owner and founder of The Manhattan

Shortly after that she and her daughters started riding.
Then in 1996 she opened her first branch office in the

she was buying her own horses and building her own barn.
Then five years ago Cohn decided matching up her company

It's been a Hamptons whirlwind for Melissa. The Hamptons

Portia the Pig wears factor 25 to prevent crackling!
Portia the Pig, featured recently on ITV1's hit programme
"Talking to Animals", needs lots of suntan
lotion to protect her skin from the bright sunshine
at her home at HorseWorld, in Whitchurch, Bristol.
Portia is a pot-bellied pig, and came to HorseWorld
in 2000 when she was rescued from a third-floor flat.
She is very grumpy, and does not like being handled,
but must have suntan lotion applied several times a
day to protect her sensitive skin. Lorna Brown, Portia's
Groom, said: "Portia is a real character, and used
to hate having her suntan lotion applied. She's just
like a big kid really! We asked Sarah Fisher, from Talking
to Animals, to help us with Portia, and it's really
worked. We can get close enough now to put Portia's
suntan lotion on without being squealed at too much
or charged!"

Paul
Rohrbach Wins $25,000 Working Hunter Classic
Parker, CO, July 19, 2003 When Paul Rohrbach
rode into the ring for the second round of the $25,000
Working Hunter Classic, he knew he had to have a clean
and expressive trip. He had won the first round with
an 88, but Shane George had taken the lead with two
consistent rounds for a 172 total. Rohrbach had to
score at least an 84.5 to beat George.
Rohrbach
didnt let the pressure get to him and laid down
a rhythmical, elegant trip that the judges rewarded
with a 90the high score of the day. Rohrbachs
partner was the 10-year-old German-bred mare Carmen.
I just had a feeling she could be special,
he said of the first time he saw the mare. Although
it has taken three years for Carmen to come into her
own, she now leads the USA Equestrian national standings
for regular working hunter.

The
Longest Ride Corp.
Australia's
Horse Highway & Trails network .
"
SEE AUSTRALIA BY HORSE "
This project represents the greatest tourist income
opportunity in Australia's history - for a single
mainland facility. The trail-using market in the Northern
Hemisphere is massive.
|
The
proposal is to build the longest, most diversified, wilderness
Horse Trail network in the World. Stage 1 is planned for
Queensland as a $34m national prototype to access four major
Airports along the way - Cairns, Rockhampton, Brisbane and
Toowoomba.
How
did the Horse Highway proposal develop?
It
came about as a result of my inclination to ride Australia's
Bicentennial National Trail (BNT) and produce a documentary
of the adventure. I found that the BNT Association had been
in poverty for 12 years. They were struggling to keep the
Trail open.

Lenkart
Survives Mother Natures Onslaught to Win $60,000
AGA Grand Prix
Parker, CO, July 19, 2003 The ominous, dark sky
prior to the start of the $60,000 AGA Grand Prix of
Denver presented by Dillards and Ariat gave some indication
of weather to come. Horses and riders from five countries
and 10 states faced not only large and technical obstacles
designed by Brazils Guilherme Noguiera-Jorge,
but had the added handicap of gusts of wind, a downpour
and a light show courtesy of mother nature.
Of
the thirty-six entrants, only four advanced to the jump-off.
Jorge Zavala, of El Contadero, Mexico, proved that the
shortened course could be jumped without error, but
his time was quickly cut by more than two seconds by
Enrique Gonzalez, also of Mexico. |
Local
favorite John McConnell, of Elizabeth, Colorado, sprinted
around the course, but a miscommunication with his beautiful
mare Spanish Eyes resulted in a refusal that dashed any
hopes of a victory.
While
lightning illuminated the sky overhead, Renee Lenkart, of
Delano, Minnesota, proved once again the ladies could beat
the boys. Lenkart blazed around the course and stopped the
clock more than a half of a second faster than Gonzalez.
Lenkarts mount Opal is only in her first year of competing
at the grand prix level, but coped with the added weather
elements like a true professional. Please

Gifted
Individual Adam Shereston proves his abilities with
Stable Talk magazine
Adam
Shereston, who is no stranger to being in the lime
light, has once again defied all odds and come up
trumps in showing his abilities to Stable Talk magazine.
Adam, who feels and heals pains and psychological
disorders with horses, was invited to Stable Talk
near Manchester, where he attended to some of their
horses and riders. Could this be, someone who actually
talks with the horses and heals them with his bare
hands? |
Well,
from recent reports and the reports from Stable Talk,
obviously he can. This gifted individual who is presently
touring around the UK, spent two days with Stable Talk
to yet again show his talents and abilities. Considering
how much scepticism there is about, it is no wonder he
has to keep proving what he does. To know what a horse
is thinking and feeling at any one time is an extradinary
gift to possess in its own right, but to actually heal
the problem as well is truly remarkable.

July, David Jack and Jason Passey were found guilty
of causing unnecessary suffering to a 10 hh 18 month
old bay filly known as Isla. Jack, 47, of 106 Forge

Kurten
Bounces Back At San Patrignano
AFTER
A few months of low profile on the international stage,
Ireland's Jessica Kurten bounced back at the four-star
Italian venue of San Patrignano tonight (Friday) with
a convincing win on her nine-year-old mare Quibell.
With
a 6,000 Euro purse at stake, Kurten was just fractions
of a second ahead of Dutch rider Peter Geerink, and
saw her team-mate Robert Splaine steer his seemingly
unshakable Coolcorron Cool Diamond into Third for
a hefty share of the prize money.
International
selectors will be closely watching both riders, with
next week's Hickstead looming, and the subsequent
choice to be made as to who represents Ireland at
the Super League fixture at Dublin in August.

Jumping - Kerrygold Grand Prix League - O'Shea Takes
Limerick Grand Prix
IN
ONE of those twists that only Irish sport seems to
produce, the co-sponsor of today's Grand Prix was
put out of the top six by a single time fault, while
his protégé won the class.
Limerick's
Paul O'Shea was the happy winner today, while Cian
O'Connor, out of whose Karlswood yard Paul rides,
came seventh, though was undoubtedly not pushing his
Nations Cup horse Waterford Crystal ahead of next
week's Hickstead Super League fixture.
The
show was opened today by Clare McNamara of Crecora,
who led the competitors into the arena. Clare won
five medals in gymnastics in June's Special Olympics.
Paul
O'Shea, who hails from the local town of Kildimo,
was ecstatic about his victory today (Saturday), and
said : <I am very happy to win here on home ground.
It is a great thrill. The course was testing, and
Gerry Byne put in some clever elements, especially
the related distance.>> Please
