Show Jumping - Ireland Tie With France At Hickstead

IN WHAT always promised to be a needle match between France and Ireland, with only half a point separating the two nations at the top of the Samsung Super League, Hickstead did not disappoint today (Friday).

Home team Britain (fourth in the Super League) led the competition at the halfway mark on a zero score, with Ireland and France tying for Second, each with four faults.

Cian O'Connor and Waterford Crystal racked up Ireland's only double clear to keep the team in contention in the second round, while Billy Twomey and Kevin Babington incurred four faults apiece. Peter Charles improved on his first round total of eight faults by having only one pole down in the second round.

The final result saw Gt. Britain return a total of eight faults, while Ireland and Britain tied for second place on 12 faults apiece. The Netherlands took Fourth with 16 faults.

Belgium was eliminated as a team, as they had two riders eliminated in the first round, and under FEI Super League rules, they could not proceed to the second round.

Far from resolving the battle between France and Ireland, Hickstead left both teams still in equal position on the Super League table, with France ahead of Ireland by half a point.

Following Hickstead, the next Samsung Super League clash will be at the Dublin Horse Show on August 8, where a battle of truly historic proportions is likely to take place between the two teams at the top of the Super League.
