Would
you know what to do if a rider fell off and was injured?
British
Horse Society Equine Specific First Aid Courses
Would you know what to do if a rider fell off and
was injured? Last year The British Horse Society (BHS)
ran almost 150 Equine Specific First Aid Courses (ESFAC),
not just for instructors and examiners but also for
grooms, volunteers, fence judges and every day riders
too.
|
The
popular courses, run in association with Pro-Medical and
Leven First Aid, are designed to teach human fist aid specifically
for people involved in the horse world. There are two courses;
an initial two-day ESFAC aimed at candidates who have no
previous experience or who have let their certificate expire,
and a one-day ESFAC refresher for those who have taken the
initial course and need a biennial refresher to keep their
certificates validated.

British
Horse Society advises never loan a horse without an
agreement
The British Horse Society (BHS) strongly advises horse
owners, and those contemplating having a horse on
loan or by lease, never to do so without a written
agreement. Loaning or leasing a horse often appears
to be an attractive solution, both for the owner who
may not have enough time to look after the horse but
does not want to sell it, and for those looking for
a horse without the capital required for initial purchase.
|
However,
such arrangements can be rife with potential problems. Frequently
the arrangement is by word of mouth only, and when something
goes wrong it can be the animal that ultimately suffers.
The BHS advocates that in all cases there should be a written
agreement signed by both parties. Although not essential
it is advisable to have the agreement written by a solicitor,
or at the least viewed by one, with the responsibilities
of both parties clearly defined, and be fair and reasonable

Globe-trotting

Foreign
travel is no mystery to pensioner Mary Jefferies 66,
from Horning on the Norfolk Broads, but sightseeing
from the back of a camel is.
No
stranger to the Southern African Kalahari and Namib

Mary has risen to the ILPH (International League for

She
comments, "I think the Gobi camel challenge attracted
me because I like vast open spaces and wild places and besides
I have only ever ridden a one hump dromedary - the idea
of the 2 humped Bactrian camel is something quite different
- an experience not be missed !"

Not
Just for Hacking!
With
the lighter evenings making riding in the week easier,
the prospect of gearing up for shows is now a reality.
Whether
you are planning to focus your efforts purely on one
discipline, or you and your horse event or enjoy having
a go at a bit of everything, preparation is the key.
Unfortunately there is no substitute for a program of
getting your horse or pony fit and gradually adjusting
its feed to match the work it is doing. It can be difficult
to strike the right balance between providing your horse
with the correct amount of energy and preventing over
excitement caused by some high energy competition feeds.
Exercising
your horse regularly (5 or 6 times a week, not just
weekends!) for at least 6 -8 weeks before you do anything
too strenuous is a must and this process may take even
longer if your horse is overweight and hasn't been fit
for a while.

The word 'synthetic' may carry some baggage these days,

Before Zilco came along, horse ownership may well have meant
hours cleaning tack and polishing fittings. These days,
time can be more productively spent 'up top', which has
got to be a good thing. Please

Whisper
Throughout
time people have claimed to be able to talk to horses,
gain an insight into a horse's mind and know exactly
what a horse is thinking or feeling. These rare
individuals are known as horse whisperers.
Do
these claims go unrecognised or are they just simply
dismissed? Unless there is scientific proof can
people really believe in such an unorthodox practice?
One man's mission is to provide that proof. He talks
to horses, with some miraculous results.
|
Adam
Shereston believes that keeping a balance between mind
and body is one of the most important factors in producing
a quality racehorse, particularly with regard to the bloodlines.
Some horses come from the very best bloodline but seem
to achieve very little on the racetrack. Many people ask
why it is that great champions produce such horses and
then seemingly from nowhere, a true champion emerges.

Cup, CSI***
WELLINGTON,
FL February 29, 2004 Some of the
horses that are competing here today will compete at
the Olympics and they had as much of a test today as
theyd get at the Olympics, said Kevin Babington,
winner of todays $75,000 PDP Capital Masters Cup,
CSI*** at the Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington,
Florida. The Olympics is four days of jumping
and you definitely would not get four courses as difficult
as we had to jump today. Leopoldo Palacios of

The
First Paso Fino Horses In The UK!!
Yvonne and Rachel Bowen, together with a handful of
close friends, introduced the uniquely gaited Paso
Fino horse into the UK. Although they imported the
first Paso Finos in 1996, this year's Equus will be
the first major show at which the Paso Finos will
be seen, where their star performer Danesa del Aparta
will be ridden by Rachel in a demonstration of the
Paso Fino's gait. Rachel will be using certain techniques
best suited to showing the Paso Fino's amazing four-beat
gait, such as riding holding a glass of wine and not
spilling a drop!!! |
The
Paso Fino horse came originally from South America. Columbus,
when he went on his famous voyage to the New World, took
with him a collection of Spanish horses including the Jennet,
the Barb and the Andalusian. On the journey the horses interbred
and what was created was a sure-footed, elegant, weight-bearing
horse. Sometimes referred to as a 'miniature Andalusian'
the Paso Fino's popularity has since spread across the world.
The Paso Fino has a four-beat gait, which is very smooth
and for those with bad backs or joints is very therapeutic.
It is the smoothest ride in the world!!

A
three-day eventer has won compensation from the Ministry
of Defence after she was badly hurt when her horse was "spooked"
by low-flying aircraft.
Sasha
Jane Smith (corr) and her exhausted mount were both injured
after a group of RAF fighter jets screamed overhead as she
neared her home.
Sasha's
gelding, named Ben Chruachan, would normally have been almost
unmoved by the planes that regularly criss-cross rural Lincolnshire.
But
the jets powered in so low as he and Sasha came to the end
of an exhausting seven-mile hack that the four-year-old
was left terrified.
He
reared up and toppled backwards into a ditch as the planes
passed, leaving Sasha with severe back injuries, a flattened
pelvis and broken ribs.
Ben
Chruachan was also badly injured in the incident, suffering
cuts to his legs after landing on top of spikes in a ditch
that was due to be concreted.
It
was only because she somehow managed to roll out of the
way in time that Sasha didn't end up trapped between her
mount and the spikes.
