Pristine
Pasture And Paddocks
With
winter debris still prevalent, and paddock spring-cleaning
just around the corner, the early part of the year can
be a cleaning nightmare. So, it is good to know that
Terra-Vac, the market-leader of industrial suction cleaners
and all-purpose sweepers, can, and will, meet all your
paddock and pasture management requirements.
For
smaller cleaning tasks the Terra-Vac Colt, which can
be easily towed by a ride-on mower or ATV, is ideal.
Powered by a 9hp petrol or 11hp diesel engine, the Colt
is as efficient clearing open areas with its suction
hover-plate as it is in tricky confined places with
its wanderhose. There really are no areas of the stables,
feeding areas or paddocks that can escape the Colt. |
If
your requirements are on a larger scale then the Stud -
with its hydraulically tipped body and huge capacity starting
at three cubic metres - is the Terra-Vac for you. In fact,
the Terra-Vac Stud is already the first choice clearing
and cleaning tool of racecourses and studs the length and
breadth of the UK. Its popularity can be ascribed to the
fact that not only is it the cure for current pasture and
paddock debris troubles, but it can also prevent future
grazing problems thanks to its substantial suction power
which is capable of clearing damaging redworm (strongyles)
larvae from surrounding grass areas.

Gain, No Pain
With
the more mild months still around the corner, are the
winter conditions causing you concern over your horse's
weight loss - not how to prevent it, but how to achieve
it? If so, you may sometimes feel that you are in the
minority, but in fact your concerns are not entirely
surprising as there are a host of possible contributory
factors for this, including:
"
Continuing reduced workload
" Increased amount of time indoors
" An inherent tendency to gain weight
" Being a 'good-doer'
" The feed currently supplied is over-compensating
for the lack of available grazing
However, you should not consider the task of reducing
the weight of your horse at this of time year as being
impossible. In fact, by feeding him a low calorie mix,
your horse can digest all the goodness he needs whilst
simultaneously shedding the pounds.

American
Hunter Jumper Foundation, Inc. Emergency Relief Fund Assists
Hidden Hill Farm After Tragic Fire
January
7, 2004--WEST BOYLSTON, Massachusetts -- The American Hunter
Jumper Foundation (AHJF) recently came to the aid of Chip
Leonard and Morgan Taylor, well-known hunter/jumper professionals
in Alpharetta, GA. Leonard and Taylor lost their stable,
all its contents, and eight horses in a fire.
Months
after the horrific fire, Morgan Taylor still has questions
about its cause. Hidden Hill Farm is a family-run
business. We all live just a few hundred yards from the
barn and we were home in various parts of the house when
it started. It was close to 11:30 p.m. one August
night when Morgans daughter went to look out the window
as she thought she saw the red glow of brake lights. What
she thought was brake lights turned out to be the 12 stall
barn fully engulfed in flames. While arson has been ruled
out by the fire investigators, no cause has ever been determined.
The barn was only a few years old and all electrical work
was done to code.

World
First For Horse Temperature Reading
In
a first for the horse world, the whole experience of taking
horses temperature will now be much less stressful
for animal, owner and vet. This ground-breaking development
is thanks to the launch of a new implantable biosensor from
the makers of Identichip, the market leading animal microchip.
The
launch of Identichip with Bio-Thermo is the most significant
development to animal microchips since they were first introduced
in 1989. Instead of using traditional rectal mercury thermometers,
which can cause stress and discomfort to the horse, vets
are now turning to the new chip, as it combines unique animal
identification technology with a temperature reading biosensor
giving highly accurate results, simply and easily.

British
Horse Society says take up riding in support of campaign
to end obesity
The
British Horse Society (BHS) urges children and adults
alike to take up horse riding in support of the Government's
anti-obesity drive announced yesterday (5 January)*.
"Healthy
exercise is just as important as a balanced diet",
says BHS chief executive Kay Driver. "The BHS fully
supports the Government in its bid to end the frightening
number of obesity cases, particularly obesity in young
children, by cracking down on unhealthy foods available
in schools, but diet is only part of the problem. Along
with a well balanced diet, good health can be encouraged
with regular exercise. For many, this conjures up images
of sweating it out in the gym and while this may work
well for some, what could be better than a New Year's
resolution to take up riding?" Please

30 Riders Donate Time for Demonstrations & Clinics During
Superstar Awareness Weekend
Proceeds benefit Miami Project to Cure Paralysis
WELLINGTON:
Helping to raise awareness about the fight to cure paralysis,
28 professional and/or Olympic equestrians will be donating
their time throughout the Superstar Awareness Weekend, Jan.
17-18, 2004, at the Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF) show
grounds. This event was created to thank the dozens of healthcare
providers, physicians and specialists from Jackson Memorial
Hospital in Miami, Trauma Hawk emergency helicopters, the
Miami Project to Cure Paralysis and others who will be providing
healthcare and emergency services to WEF riders as necessary
this season.
Last
year at WEF, Grand Prix rider and Superstar Awareness Weekend
organizer/volunteer Debbie Stephens fell from her horse
and received improper care in the crucial first 48 hours,
which could have ended her career as a professional athlete.
Debbie attributes her proper care and rehabilitation to
the Miami Project. She has dedicated her life to raising
awareness about paralysis and the immediate need to bring
proper healthcare to the equestrian community. The Superstar
Awareness Weekend is just one step in the efforts to address
this need.

Horse Charity Seeks Volunteer Helpers
Adults needed for riding, mucking out, gardening and ground
maintenance
Horse lovers in Sussex and Surrey are being sought to help
out at a charity that looks after ex-racehorses.
Moorcroft
Racehorse Welfare Centre, based at Slinfold, near Horsham,
West Sussex, is set in 90 acres of grazing and has 25 horses
in its care at any one time for assessment, re-schooling
and, in many cases, re-homing.
With
annual running costs of more than £220,000, the charity
relies heavily not only on financial donations but also
on volunteer helpers - who must be over 18 years old.
Graham
Oldfield and Sue Collins, who run the Centre, are keen to
hear from anyone who might be in a position to provide some
much-needed assistance. This could take the form of riding
out or schooling the horses, mucking out stables or general
yard duties. For those who love horses but prefer to keep
their distance, help is also needed with gardening and ground
maintenance.

Locate Celebrates First Year Success
Identichip
Locate, the market leading microchip, has celebrated its
first birthday. The comprehensive pet reunification service
has achieved outstanding success since its launch, having
gained nearly 17,000 members. Around 400 pets have been
reported missing and more than 65% have been reunited with
their owners
The
Identichip Locate product was introduced at the end of 2002
following a consultation session with existing Identichip
customers. The exercise revealed that many customers would
be interested in an all inclusive pet reunification service
which also offered regular reminders to keep their registration
address details up to date.
When
a pet goes missing, the owner makes one call to a specially
allocated number and the dog wardens, recovery centres and
veterinary surgeries in the surrounding area are notified
immediately. LOST posters are produced for displaying
locally and the pets details are entered on Identichip
Locates on-line pet register, which can be accessed
at any time.
