The Principles of Teaching
Riding
The recognized
official teaching manual of the Association Of British Riding Schools,
the book has been co-authored by Karen Bush and Julian Marczak who
between them have provided an absolute wealth of working knowledge
and good advice to their readers. This new book promises to bring
rich rewards to all riders from beginners up by saving them from a
range of nightmare experiences often thrust upon them by inexperienced
instructors and riding school managers!
Having read the
book personally with the International spread of equiworld.net members
in mind, not to mention those who ride western, I was impressed with
the way in which Julian and Karen, by sticking simply to the principals
have produced a book which will work for readers world-wide. Knowing
Julian personally, I can heartily recommend this book to anyone and
especially to those who wish to teach others to ride or run a riding
establishment.

As a small society,
money is must be carefully targeted for maximum benefit, and in recent
years a little has been spent every year to update the Society's image
and provide good quality information for the public. Two years ago
new leaflets were introduced, then a range of greetings cards and
postcards featuring line drawings of the ponies by Catriona Campbell
were launched. Then last year, thanks to the efforts of the late registrar,
Tony Young, a Heritage Lottery Grant was ordered to enable the Society
to buy its own display boards. Says Chairman, Celia Harper Gow:

LAPAROSCOPIC OVARIECTOMY: New alternative for hormone-related behaviour
in mares
Ovariectomy is
a surgical procedure performed to remove one or both ovaries. In horses,
bilateral ovariectomy is done as an elective surgery in mares that
are not going to be used for breeding purposes. An indication for
ovariectomy in mares is to prevent estrus-associated behaviour. In
these cases, undesirable behaviour occurs when the mare is in estrus
and includes frequent posturing and urination, striking, kicking,
difficulty under saddle and other dangerous or undesirable vices.
Mares that respond to progesterone therapy are likely to respond to
ovariectomy and removal of both ovaries is indicated in these cases.
In addition to behavioural concerns, ovariectomy may be requested
for registration purposes or for mares to be used for semen collection.
It is also recommended in mares that are carriers of a detrimental
genetic condition in order to remove the defect from the breeding
population (such as severe combined immunodeficiency syndrome in Arabian
horses).

The
British Equine Event 2001
Exceptional Attendance
For Equine Event!
The British Equine Event, held
over the weekend 3rd – 4th November
at the NAC Stoneleigh Park, achieved its highest attendance
figures ever – just under 17,000 visitors came to the
event which was packed with equestrian personalities, demonstrations,
features, information, advice and specialist exhibitor stands.
|
The standard of
trade stands this year was exceptionally high, making a tough job
for the judges of the BETA sponsored Best Stand Award. Martin Collins
Enterprises eventually came out on top in the 18 sq. m. and over category,
whilst Robinson Animal Health Care won the prize for stands of up
to 18 sq. m.
The Best Breed Stand Award was won by the Eriskay Pony Society who
produced a clear and informative presentation for the visitor and

The Friesian Extravaganza
On October 26th
& 27th, Reno hosted the Friesian Extravaganza and "Friesians
on Stage" at the Reno Livestock Events Center.
Friesians came
from across the U.S. to participate in the afternoon competition events
which included all disaplines of Dressage. There was driving from
single hitches to four-in-hand coaches and specialized classes including
the popular costumed event. The show was very colorful with some classes
having over 20 entries, a large turn-out for a breed that is rather
scarce.
. Every
evening at 8:00PM the arena was cleared and the two hour event "Friesians
on Stage" began to spotlight some of the most beautiful Friesians
in the Unitrd States and showcased the best trained dancing horses
in the country.
The very serious
and patriotic finale with a salute to New York's "Twin Towers"
brought all the Friesians back into the arena for their finale walk
around and all who saw this 2 hour show were treated to the "magic
and enchantment of the Friesian horses".

Hanoverian Tour Of Germany
and Stallion Events Update
Having just returned
from nearly three weeks in Germany as a guest of the annual Hanoverian
Verband Breeders Program, Dale is still sorting through all
his notes, pictures and videos. Although the normal group size was
down from an average of 10 to 3 (the other guests were both from New
Zealand) due to the world situation, the ability to experience the
Hanoverian breeding program was not diminished. Events included the
Elite Auction of Riding Horses and Foals, the Gala Hanoverian Horse
Night, the 3-day Stallion Performance Test at Adelheidsdorf, the 4-day
Stallion Licensing and Auctions at Verden, tours of 13 breeding farms
plus the State Stallions at Celle, and informative lectures and tutorials
on bloodlines, judging the Hanoverian and scoring and evaluation systems
as well as the annual Breeders Ball. The officials at the Verband
have created an 18-day experience, which is filled with an astonishing
amount of information and skill building combined with the renowned
German hospitality.
This is a time
of change for Hanoverian breeding in Germany.

A
Horse, of Course
with
Don Blazer
We're
bashing, battering and breaking our horse's knees.
You can
blame some of it on our selective breeding, and you can blame
the rest of it on our insane desire to have horses use their
front ends for slowing forward speed or stopping.
It's all the rage.
|
|
A horse's knee can be compared to a human's wrist. It's comprised
of two rows of four bones each. Actually the horse's knee joint is
three joints. The radius makes a joint with the upper row of knee
bones; the upper row makes a joint with the lower row; and the lower
row joins with the cannon bone.
The knee is a
complex system, and therefore presents plenty of opportunity for trouble.

Which
Way: Ideal or Optimal
©
Equine Management, Auction, and Appraisal Services, Inc
Raising
and caring for a horse requires the owner to follow one of
two concepts: developing and handling the animal in a way
that is ideal for that particular individual, or managing
him so that the demands placed on him follow a generic pattern
that does not account for the differences between horses,
optimal.
|
In this context,
ideal implies controlling the factors that contribute to a horse's
general health, and the result is in the animal's best interest. The
other method, however, involves pushing the horse to limits that may
not be the healthiest for him, even when the short-term result indicates
otherwise. It is the horse's long-term well-being that is the goal.

Equafleece
Announce New Products
Following
demand from customers at the British Equine Event at Stoneleigh
on 3/4 November Equafleece have extended their best-selling
range of fluorescent yellow Polartec® fleece horse clothing
to include fluorescent yellow sweat rugs.
|
Designer Mary
Leigh explains:When
designing the range I didn¹t initially focus on the benefit of
a high-visibility sweat rug which I saw basically as an indoor garment.
However, many of our customers lead out unsaddled horses to exercise
and find that the sweat rug doubles perfectly as an exercise sheet.
Others have pointed out that if you are transporting horses by road
for any reason overnight or in the winter you are likely to have horses
in rugs standing beside a poorly lit highway. Even if you don¹t
intend to box or unbox on the roadside, you can always break down.
The other new product
launched after Stoneleigh is a quarter-zip fleece top in navy with
a broad horizontal fluorescent strip. These were worn as uniform by
Equafleece personnel at the event and were never intended for sale.
However, so many orders were taken at the show that Equafleece have
put the fleeces into production.

Finding
the Right Bit for You and Your Horse
©
Equine Management, Auction, and Appraisal Services, Inc
For many
people, selecting a bit is a matter of guesswork, trial and
error or habit. Catalogues and magazines offer a huge array
of bits, often with conflicting descriptions of their purpose.
Everyone seems to have their own theory about what mouthpiece
to use when, and their reasons behind the use of each piece
are as variable as the weather. But until the rider understands
the action of the bit and where the horse feels pressure it
will not be a matter of finding the right bit, but knowing
how to use it.
|
There are two basic
classifications of bits, the snaffle and the curb, determined by the
type of pressure they apply. The snaffle acts on direct pressure.
This is the simplest and usually the gentlest bit, good for green
horses and green riders, although it is also appropriate for the more
advanced. Pressure is exerted on the corners of the mouth, lips, bars
and tongue. The mouthpiece may be broken (jointed) or straight (mullen);
the joint relieves pressure on the tongue and bars, while the mullen
mouth can have a port for tongue release. Severity of the snaffle
bit is determined by the circumference of the mouthpiece, the smaller
it is, the harsher. Adding a twist, slow or otherwise, also increases
the damaging effects.

The National

Although the current
model of GPA helmet worn by riders is made to ASTM standards, it is
not certified by the SEI. "We have worked closely with Frantisi,
Inc., who will be the United States distributor, to get the approved
GPA helmet to the market," explained Joe Dotoli, Chairman of
the NHJC Ad-Hoc Safety Helmet Committee. "Each approved helmet
that comes on the market gives riders more choices in fit and style."
