2003 Samsung Super League
Eight Teams selected for the 2003 Samsung Super League
At the conclusion of CSIO Athens, the eight teams selected for the Super League are the following:
Germany, France, Italy, Belgium, Sweden, the Netherlands, Great Britain and Ireland.

Switzerland had to win the Samsung Nations Cup of CSIO Athens to be the 8th team selected for the Samsung Super League. As they just missed the victory to finished second behind Germany, they finish with 8 points on the table below. However it’s the points won in the WEG that decide and Ireland is the last team qualified for the Super League.
The 8 Super League teams were selected based on:
1) Their placing in the standings of the Nations Cup competitions from March to October 2002 (ending with CSIO Athens (GRE) and excluding 2002 Nations Cup Final).
2) Their placing in the team competition at the 2002 World Equestrian Games (half the points of the standings)

Arabian Wins Pony Jumper National Championship
On August 13, 2002, Byrnadette, a 13-year-old Arabian and her 12-year-old rider, Billy Worthington bested a field of 32 riders from across the country to capture the gold medal in individual competition at the 2002 Pony Jumper National Championship in Lexington, Kentucky. The championship is considered a USA Equestrian Junior Olympic event. Worthington's Zone 2 team was the silver medal team.

Going into the last round with four clear rounds, Worthington knew that a rail would force a jump-off. "That night I had to go clean and I did," says Worthington, who rides Byrnadette for owner Marjorie Ritzer of Sand Lake, New York. Worthington also earned the championship's Short Stop Perpetual Trophy for the best classical jumping style.
"I didn't expect the style award because although Byrnadette is hard to beat, she is quick and hard to equitate," says Worthington, of Averill, New York, who trains with his mom, Betsy Worthington, and Michael Kirby.
"Byrnadette goes like an Arabian and isn't the traditional hunter type, so it was nice that the judges recognized that you don't need to be mounted on a warmblood to be effective," says Betsy.

Show Jumping - Ireland Through To Super League By A Whisker
Ireland has qualified for next year's prestigious Nations Cup Super League by coming 5th in the Samsung Nations Cup of Athens tonight (Friday).
Ireland and Switzerland were neck-and-neck for the final slot in the world's eight top teams up until today, but Switzerland needed to win the Athens Cup in order to nudge ahead of Ireland on Super League points.
Super League qualification means that a country can jump at four-star events next season, but failure to qualify means relegation to a <second division> of Nations Cup show jumping, where only three-star events can be entered.
The teams now qualified for Super League status are: Germany, France, Italy, Belgium, Sweden, Netherlands, Gt. Britain, and Ireland.

Arabian Wins Two Silver Medals In International Competition
Most of the competitors at the first FEI "Coupe des Ameriques" looked down from their warmbloods when they rode past Mary Claire Massey and her 15-hand Arabian Scrabble+// (Monopoli x Saletra). But by the end, they were looking up as Massey clutched two silver medals for placing second in team and individual competition at the Junior FEI level. The event, also known as the Championship of the Americas, was held from July 17-21 at Blainville Equestrian Park just north of Montreal with riders from seven countries competing at the Grand Prix, Advanced, Young Rider and Junior Levels.

At the 2001 North American Junior FEI Championship, (which took place this year at the Coupe des Ameriques), they finished 6th out of 30 competitors and took team silver. In 2000, the pair won team gold at the Cosequin/AHSA Junior Dressage Team Championship

National Hunter Jumper Council Zone Teams
Capital Challenge Horse Show

Des Zones Hunter Teams
For the first time, teams of hunters are representing their zones in the National Hunter/Jumper Council's Prix des Zones at the Capital Challenge Horse Show. Teams consist of one professional rider, one junior or pony rider, and one amateur owner or adult amateur rider. Scores from the first two jumping classes of each rider's respective section count toward the team score. Teams are allowed to drop one score.
Supporting the popularity of this unique idea, sixteen Prix des Zones hunter teams are competing for the beautifully-embroidered NHJC letterman jackets. Zones 2, 4 and 7 each have one team competing, Zones 1 and 5 are both represented by two teams, four teams come from Zone 3, and Zone 10 is fielding five teams. There is no entry fee for the competition.

Californian wins Del Mar International Grand Prix for third consecutive year
Del Mar Fairgrounds - For an unprecedented third consecutive year in Del Mar, Will Simpson riding El Campeon's Ado Annie owned by El Campeon Farms won the $40,000 Del Mar International Grand Prix, a World Cup Qualifier, on Saturday, Sept. 28 at the Del Mar Fairgrounds Arena.
From a field of 27 competitors, Simpson and Ado Annie, representing El Campeon Farms from Hidden Valley, CA, were the only team to complete the Grand Prix course design by Javier Fernandez, riding two clean rounds to take home the $12,500 first place prize money and the Thomas Endicott Perpetual Memorial Trophy; which, since its inception has only been awarded to one team: Will Simpson and Ado Annie.
In the Jump-off, not only did the El Campeon Farms team complete the course with a clean round, but also with the fastest time.
Following the initial round of competition, six were tied for first place with clean rounds. Tied for seventh place were ten additional teams who finished the initial round with four faults.

2002 Youth Nationals Celebrates a Decade of Champions
Ten years ago, the first Youth National Arabian and Half-Arabian Championship Horse Show surprised exhibitors with the diverse number of classes and the huge slate of youth activities. Today those classes have almost doubled going from 58 to more than 100 classes covering everything from dressage, English pleasure, hunter pleasure and halter to western pleasure, native costume, reining and working cow. This year's show featured 910 horses and 2,393 class entries. New classes for 2002 offered more for the younger exhibitors with the addition of Showmanship JTR 10 & Under, Freestyle Reining Exhibition JTR 13 & Under and the UPHA Arabian Breeds Walk/ Trot Challenge Cup 10 & under.

Women in Ranching to Highlight Livestock Congress
Ranch Horse program to focus on the contributions of women to the marketing of the ranch and the horses they produce
(Houston, TX) – There’s no doubt that women have played a major role in the movement westward in the United States, and with that came their contributions to the development of outstanding bloodlines in both cattle and horses; a fact the U.S. shares with many countries. In recognition of those contributions, the International Livestock Congress (ILC) will continue with its ranch horse theme by presenting “Women in Ranching,” during the event to be held February 25-28 in Houston, Texas during the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

“With the significance of the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame opening this year, we felt it only appropriate that the Congress highlight the contributions these women continue to make,” said Norm Luba, chairman of the horse program and executive director of the North American Equine Ranching Information Council. “However, rest assured that this program is not just for women. Ekstein Approved by the Irish Horse Board
Following a recent inspection, the Irish Horse Board has fully approved Ekstein, the champion Dutch Warmblood stallion owned by Morningside Stud in County Clare.
Ekstein (Zion x Joost) is a 16-year-old bay that is also approved by the KWPN, the Royal Warmblood Studbook of the Netherlands. Ekstein was champion of the KWPN stallion performance test and champion seven-year-old stallion showjumper in Holland. He has eighteen offspring competing in (inter)national classes at 1.40 – 1.60 metre, and at least twelve of these progeny are competing in CSIO, CSI-A, or CSI-B classes. Three of his progeny compete successfully in Nations Cup classes and four successfully compete in World Cup shows. In addition, at least ten of Ekstein’s progeny compete at high levels in the USA. Four of Ekstein’s sons have been approved as sires in leading studbooks such as the KWPN, NRPS (Holland), AES (United Kingdom), and sBs (Belgium). Ekstein is also the dam-sire of at least two approved stallions in Holland.

O'Shea Racks Up Second International Win
TWENTY-FIVE year old Paul O'Shea from Co. Limerick notched up his second ever international win at the Nations Cup show in Athens, Greece today (Thursday), riding <Liffey Valley>, the former mount of Hazel O'Callaghan , who died in July, after a tragic accident. The horse is owned by her mother,
Shelagh.
Paul's win was in the second class of the day, the Parthenon Cup.

FEI/GANDINI World Jumping Riders Rankings
Despite the fact that the four riders qualified for the final competition of the World Equestrian Games in Jerez obtained bonus points, none of them managed to enter in the top ten.
Eric Navet who earned altogether 500 points in the WEG has reached place 13 compared to 24 last month. Dermot Lennon raised from 38 to 26, Peter Wylde from 52 to 23 and Helena Lundbäck made the bigger jump from 149 to 68. The points obtained in the WEG will count fully during one year
2006 World Equestrian Games
On 18 September 2002, the FEI Executive Board awarded the 5th World Equestrian Games in 2006 to Aachen (GER).
Eventing Recommended For Exclusion Of The Olympic Programme By The IOC Olympic Programme Commission
The FEI Executive Board will meet with the IOC to propose a shorter Olympic formula for the Eventing competitions.

From the artistic opening ceremonies held in the town hall where the riders were introduced with a ballet dancer carrying the respective flags of the 16 participating countries to the closing ceremonies at the stadium, everything ran smoothly blessed with fine weather.

Industry Applauds South Essex For Protecting Premiums

A solution to tendon problems ?
Dr David Chapman-Jones, a specialist in sport and exercise medicine, writes this important article about tendons. In association with the Queens Medical Centre, Nottingham, City University, London and a number of European Medical Centres he has focused his research and clinical activities on soft-tissue disorders, particularly those seen in tendons. Dr Chapman-Jones has studied the way they work, heal and why they cause so many problems to both humans and horses.

A solution to tendon problems ?
From both a functional and biological perspective tendons
in humans are so similar to those found in animals what applies to one species could, and often does,
equally apply to another.
This is an important factor to bear in mind when designing, researching and evaluating new treatment regimes
Tendons, like a lot of things in life, are not given a moments thought until they go wrong - and when they do go wrong, as many athletes and horse owners will testify, oh dear, do they go wrong! Imagine the gripe of pain, like tooth ache, every time you move your arm or leg then imagine this becoming progressively worse and lasting, in some cases, for years.
This paints a depressingly dark picture but what makes it blacker is the apparent lack of coherent treatment regimes available to sufferers. This appears to be equally as true in the equine world as the human one. So is there an answer as how to reliable and reproducibly treat tendon problems in humans or horses? NHJC Medal Finalists At The Capital Challenge Horse Show
Sunday, September 29, 2002, was devoted to the National Hunter Jumper Council equitation finals at the Capital Challenge Horse Show in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. The NHJC Junior Medal was the first event with eighty-three starters. Fourteen states were represented from seven zones of the NHJC and USA Equestrian as well as two riders who came from Canada to ride in the finals competition. California sent the largest contingent with twenty representatives. Next came Florida with ten riders and Connecticut with nine.

The NHJC Medal classes were held at horse shows around the country beginning in January, 2002. First and second place finishers in the NHJC classes qualified for the final ride-off. In addition, ribbon winners in each equitation age group at the Capital Challenge, not previously qualified, were eligible to compete. Both classes were scored under the open numerical scoring system by a panel of five judges, and the scores were averaged. Mike Rheinheimer designed the course with eleven obstacles including two combinations. The juniors competed at 3'6" while the amateurs jumped the same course at 3'3".

Mounted Games World Pairs
The 11th World Mounted Games Pairs Championship, organised by the Mounted Games Association of Great Britain, was held at Newark Showground, Notts (28-29 September 2002), where representatives from eight countries were forward for three classes. After three qualifying sessions the top 16 came forward for the semi finals where the top eight scores went forward for the grand final.
Taking the open title were the newly married Christian and Felicty Hotson Jones riding Pebbles and Laura, who triumped over Elaine Trevor Jones and Helen Green by one point. Based in West Sussex, they are part of Sussex, which won the British champions competition at Stoneleigh in August.

USA Equestrian Announces Results Of USA Young Horse Dressage National Championships
The 2002 USA Young Horse Dressage National Championships were held Sunday, September 29, during Dressage at Devon in Devon, Pennsylvania. Invitations to compete in these Championships were based on qualifying scores earned during the 2002 Young Horse Finals in May and June. In the five-year-old division, "Rosabella", owned by Rebecca Hopfner, was ridden to victory by Kim Barteau with a final score of 7.84. "Oleander", owned by Alan & Barbara Friedman and ridden by Adam Lastowka, won the six-year-old division with a final score of 8.24.

Police Horse Retires after 14 Years in the Force
19 year old Taunton Deane (or TD as he is affectionately known) retires tomorrow after 15 years loyal service with the Avon and Somerset Mounted Section.
TD, who has been gifted to the ILPH (International League for the Protection of Horses), is to go out on loan to Mrs. Hilary Webster from Weymouth in Dorset where he will spend his retirement.

Says ILPH Field Officer Peter Griffiths, "In 1988 when I was Chief Inspector in charge at the Avon and Somerset Mounted and Dog Sections I was approached by Mrs. Min Mason, a long time supporter of both Sections, as she wished to purchase a horse foruse by the Mounted Branch.
"That year we purchased a 5 year old gelding who was later officially named Taunton Deane by HRH The Princess Royal who is the ILPH President. "
Once TD's basic training was completed he was allocated to PC Philip Jones, now ILPH Field Officer for South Wales, and the pair went on to win many championships both nationally and at a local level.

Trakhener Breed Heads For Side-Saddle Honours
Since 1960, when Walter Lorch brought the first Trakehner stallion into this country as the basis of the renowned Muschamp Stud, this famed German breed, now in its 11th generation in England, has repeatedly proved itself in competitive equestrianism. Its reputation as a top-class sport horse widened some 12 years ago when Walter sponsored four-in-hand driving trial whip, Karen Bassett, in her move from ponies to horses, providing her with a team of Trakehners. Within five years Karen had won international recognition with the horses and had represented Great Britain at successive World Championships, earning her the title of leading lady four-in-hand driver in this discipline. Committed to the breed, Karen still drives a team of Trakehners and still holds that title.

Under Walter’s patronage once again, the Trakehner is about to show its all-round qualities of temperament, outstanding paces and reliability in a different equestrian field. Fifteen-year-old Caroline Wilkins, 2000 National Junior Side-Saddle Performance Points Champion, is set to train five-year-old Trakehner, Amadeus, with a view to competing side-saddle in national competition. Amadeus is by Beatos – the stallion that is best known as Lloyds Bank’s black horse, out of Anuschka, a Trakehner mare with an impeccable blood line. Only backed in March this year, Amadeus was quick to settle to side-saddle and is now in training with Caroline.

Shawn Flarida Named USET Athlete of the Month for September 2002
Gladstone, NJ—September 30, 2002—Shawn Flarida of Springfield, OH, was named United States Equestrian Team (USET) Athlete of the Month for September after winning two Gold Medals at the first-ever Reining World Championship held at the World Equestrian Games in Jerez, Spain, September 11-22.

Flarida and his mount, San Jo Freckles, owned by Michael Harper, led the U.S to the team Gold Medal and also took individual first place honors with a score of 221.5 points. Flarida stood in second place individually after the qualifying round but proved his skill in the final round and emerged as the individual World Champion edging out teammate Tom McCutcheon of Pilot Point, TX, riding Conquistador Whiz, owned by George Shifrin. Flarida’s win makes him the first-ever reining World Champion.

Jim Baker, USA Equestrian Licensed Official, Passes Away
Jim Baker, a respected USA Equestrian Board of Directors member and licensed judge, passed away Wednesday, September 25, 2002. Baker was 67.
For more than a quarter of a century, Baker provided his skills to the sport, and held many 'R' licenses including Western and Stock Seat Equitation. Additionally, he was a distinguished licensed judge of Arabians and Reining.

"In fact," says Blazer, "it is probably the only secret which will improve your horse training skills in 5 minutes. It's information about your horse's personality, strengths and weaknesses. And when you have that information you are instantly better equipped to help that horse."Give this some thought, Blazer advises. Training a horse is just a matter of communication. (Every horse can spin, lope, stop, back, side pass, and do a renvers. We don't teach horses those exercises; we teach them to perform what we ask, when we ask.) And communication is most effective when we understand the thinking, desires and personality traits of those to whom we are delivering our message.

Who wins this Sires of the World competition at Zangersheide?

Over the past four years Jos Lansink has dominated The Sires of The World from start to finish. The question of who will win the Sires of the World today at the World Championship for Young Horses at Zangersheide has become somewhat silly. Jos Lansink and AK High Valley Z , of course. In the jump-off for three riders the poles were rattling in their cups, but the 'bronze' medal from Jerez turned his horse on a penny, took risks also on the last line and clocked a clear round in 30.23. More than two full seconds faster than Woutjan Van der Schans on Broere VDL Atlantic (Acord x Lord) and Nina B Johnsen, formerly Nina Braaten on Favoritas (Flanel x Rubilak). This is the third victory of the Zangersheide combination Lansink-AK High Valley Z at Zangersheide.in the last four editions.

With EQUITANA less than two months away, we have had hundreds of enquiries from people who would like to start planning their days at the event. As a result, we will be posting an education schedule on the website - www.equitana.com.au - which will detail session times for all of our educators. This information will be available for viewing by mid-October.
