BHS Calls For Bridleways To Be
Opened
The British Horse Society is calling for more
rights of way to be opened up in the countryside. The equestrian industry is
losing over £100m a month and much of this is directly attributable to the
closure of our rights of way |
While some local authorities are responding to the
government's call to open up the countryside, there are still too many who have
not opened rights of way that carry no risk and in some cases are in purely
arable land. The BHS urges local authorities to give priority to opening up the
few rights of way that are open to horses. A great many people depend for their
livelihood on these paths being open, not just for recreation.

Equestrian Work Provides Funds For Humanitarian Projects In
The Mid 90's
Few realize, that when Stephen Apatow, opened his
specialized work in biomechanics for veterinary and equestrian applications in
Northern Nevada, that this work provided financial resources for the strategic
planning and project development of humanitarian initiatives across the United
States. After leaving the pursuit of international competition for cross
country skiing and rowing and the completion of a Run Across America project in
1993, Apatow found himself in Northern Nevada working with Aimee Fulper, a
student at the University of Nevada, Reno, Nevada 4-H Ambassador from 1990-92.
This scope of this collaborative effort would encompass the development of
projects which would bridge unmet needs to untapped community resources for
frontline service programs across the United States and eventual formation of
the non-profit organization Humanitarian Resource Institute in 1994.

HITS Doubles Prize Money
for Week IV of HITS Tahoe 2001 Horse Show |
SAUGERTIES, NY (June 7, 2001)--Horse Shows In The
Sun, Inc. has announced that prize money for Week IV of HITS Tahoe in Minden,
Nevada, is double this year. "Rather than hold the $100,000 Grand Prix and
other big purse classes during Week V, which was a B-rated show last year, we
will run HITS Tahoe as a four-week, all A-rated circuit," stated Tom
Struzzieri, owner and president of HITS. "It was our intention to have
five A-rated weeks, but since the last week of AHSA dates is not available this
year, we will do the four A-rated shows only, with double the prize money in
Week IV." HITS Tahoe 2001 will run from June 27 through July 22.

A Horse, of Course
with Don Blazer
The Fourth of July is the birthday of our
nation. Its the day we declared independence from foreign rule. Yet it
was with foreign help that we won our freedom.
And even though historians will say horses played
a minor role in the Revolutionary war, others will say, without the horse, our
heroes would have lost the war and been hanged as traitors. |
|
One thing is for sure, the War of Independence
brought us our freedom, and it also brought us the American Cavalry.
The horse soldier came into his own.
Nearly a decade before the Boston Tea Party,
events were taking place in Poland which would later have a profound effect on
the American War of Independence.
Cassimir Pulaski was in the service of the Duke of
Courland in 1768 learning the techniques of riding and cavalry warfare.
Meanwhile Cassimirs father, Joseph Pulaski was bringing men to arms in an
effort to keep the Russians from interfering in Polish affairs. The political
climate was similar to what was brewing in the American colonies.

The Fine Art of De-spooking
When I first arrived at the Rocky Mountain
Training Center in Larkspur, Colorado, I thought I had plenty of experience
with spooky horses. Starting the catty Argentine thoroughbreds for polo had
certainly been challenging. Even my own Anglo/Arab had left me in the air
several times. But nothing prepared me for the lightning speed that typified
the Arabians. These horses could flinch sideways or reverse at a dead run.
Without a decent seat and balance to match, it would have been a lot of long
walks to the barn. It all really hit home while watching a video of the finish
of a hundred-mile endurance race. Coming down off the mountain at a moderate
pace after a hundred miles I witnessed mature horses still spooking! Then and
there I committed to making a project of this phenomenon, common to all and
chronic to some. |
Self-preservation is clearly the reason for
spooking. If we were to take that away, we would be riding very dangerous
animals. That self-preservation is what allows us to trust our horses in
umpteen dangerous situations. That same horse that spooks also takes us across
fields filled with boulders and leg breaking holes. Is it fair to get upset or
beat that same animal when he is legitimately afraid? I choose to respect it,
once we have built a working rapport.

Canadian Olympian Eric
LaMaze and Millcreek Raphael Win $100,000 Nevele Grande Grand Prix at HITS
Catskills II |
ELLENVILLE, NY (June 3, 2001)-Canadian Olympic
Team member Eric LaMaze of Schomberg, Ontario, riding Millcreek Raphael was the
faster of only two double-clears in a field of 45 to win the $100,000 Nevele
Grande Grand Prix at HITS Catskills II in Ellenville, New York, today. In a
four-horse jump-off, LaMaze was more than two seconds faster than second place
Meredith Taylor of Annandale, New Jersey, on Victor owned by Full Cry Farm.
Millcreek Raphael took home an engraved silver tray, an embroidered cooler, and
$30,000 for owner Millcreek Stable. LaMaze was first in the order and said that
he found the course difficult and long, but that he had a definite strategy.
"It wouldn't have made a difference to me if I went fortieth or
first," said LaMaze. "It was pretty clear once I walked the course. I
stuck to my plan and the horse jumped wonderfully. I decided to gamble on a
double-clear and see where that got me. I wasn't going for speed, I just wanted
a double-clear and let them chase me a little." Buddy Brown of Wellington,
Florida, was the course designer.

Marilyn Little and Pico
De Gallo Win $15,000 Open Jumper Prix at HITS Catskills II |
ELLENVILLE, NY (June 1, 2001)--Marilyn Little, 19,
of Frederick, Maryland, riding Pico de Gallo, bested a field of 42 horses today
to win the $15,000 Open Jumper Prix at HITS Catskills II in Ellenville, New
York. Little's time was almost two-and-a-half seconds faster than second place
Tracy Bartko and Argus. Pico de Gallo, an eight-year-old gelding from Brazil,
brought home $4,500 for Little who owns him with Raylyn Farm. "He has the
biggest heart of any horse I've ever ridden," said Little. "You can
make mistakes on him and he still tries to jump clear." Buddy Brown of
Wellington, Florida, designed today's course. The $15,000 Open Jumper Prix is
held in the Grand Prix Field on Friday each week of the six-event HITS
Catskills summer series of horse shows.

than in today's marketplace, where change occurs at warp speed. As the horse

are worth pursuing, and which need to be put back on the shelf? Understanding

Whats in the Stars for Your Horse?,
(C) Kim Devries
Just as the Sun is at the centre of our universe, the Sun is the central focus
of energy in an equine natal astrology chart. As your horse gains maturity, the
energy of the Sun-sign becomes more dominant. This happens, as the Sun sign
progressively becomes the synthesis point for the various sides of your horse's
personality. The Sun sign represents approximately 70% of the nature your
horse's personality. It should, however, be noted that the Sun sign
descriptions are of broad personality types. Their accuracy in any given case
not only depends on the age of your horse, but also on the overall strength and
condition of the Sun, in relation to the natal chart as a whole. This is
particularly the case with regard to aspects the Sun forms with other planets
in the natal chart.
All of us who are passionate about horses understand that equine personalities
are equally as unique and complex as those of our human counterparts are. It is
important for us and for our horses that our human and equine personalities are
matched in a partnership, so that we can work together for mutual benefit and
enjoyment. It is poetry in motion, when human and equine partners trust and
respect one another, work together and have fun together. Yet no matter how
ideal a relationship may be, there will always be challenges for us to face. If
we can embrace these challenges in a positive manner, they give us
opportunities for a dynamic and rewarding partnership with our horse. The tool
of Astrology can be used to help us make the most of the strengths in our
partnership, as well as find positive ways of embracing the challenges.
