Proper Education &
Becoming Employable
Horses are nice, but can you actually make a
living with them?" Many a parent has asked their children this question
upon learning of their equestrian ambitions. |
"The answer is a resounding yes, provided you
learn horsemanship correctly and thoroughly from the beginning. The most
expedient way to accomplish this is by starting with a solid education. You'll
learn more from two years of qualified instruction in a coherent program than
from 10 years out there trying to learn it by ear.
But how do you choose from the many Equestrian programs, college affiliated or
otherwise, being offered in America, indeed around the world, today? The most
reliable point of comparison is this: how much time will the student spend
riding. This may sound too obvious to mention, yet many schools offer a core of
general equestrian courses, with only 2 or 3 hours per week of riding time.
This should serve as a red flag for those seriously seeking to advance their
riding and training. Horsemanship requires unique athletic skills, and
coordination with a 1200 pound animal; and acquiring those skills means
practice.

The
"Farrier-Friendly" series -
Does Your Horse Suffer From Farrier Phobia?
Imagine yourself trapped in an elevator. Your
hands are tied and you are only able to stand on one leg at a time. Let's also
add an annoying fly that insists on using your nose for a landing site. Sounds
pretty uncomfortable and maybe even scary if you're the claustrophobic type,
doesn't it? |
Keep this in mind the next time you see a young
horse in crossties, fighting flies in a narrow barn aisle, anxiously awaiting a
farrier. One thing the owner and farrier should realize is that the horse's
skittish, jumpy, kicking, etc., reactions are not personal attacks directed at
them, rather, they are natural responses to the situation.
An automatic response to this behavior is to hold the horse in place
physically. Such approaches include crossties, leg hobbles, "honda
knots" and the like, most of which prove dangerous to both horse and
handler. Some may argue in support of these tactics and to accomplish the job.
However, these methods are long, physical processes that never lead to a
lasting fix.

Training
Mythunderstandings -
Learning from Horses: Plute
Anyone who's honest with themselves and has been
in the horse business for very long can look back and count quite a few
mistakes. It's the old "if I knew then what I know now" thing. Honest
mistakes are OK. Everybody makes them, so don't beat yourself up too much about
the things you do wrong. The important thing is to learn from your mistakes.
|
Plute was a very smart horse. He was a short,
muscular mahogany bay with a dished face, chipmunk cheeks, tiny ears and a big,
wise eye. He'd been trained by Dale Wilkinson and had gone on to become a
winning cutting horse. Then his owner sort of semi-retired Plute and turned him
over to his kids to ride.
One day after a clinic I did for the Erie Hunt and Saddle Club, Plute's owner
approached me and commented that he liked my way with horses. He told me he had
a good cutting horse that had gotten spoiled by his kids so he wouldn't canter
anymore. The horse was a Poco Bueno son, he said, whose sister was winning lots
so he wanted me to get the horse loping good for a sale that was coming up.
What he didn't tell me was the reason the kids weren't cantering him anymore
was that Plute wanted to buck into the canter. If you didn't let him buck, he
wouldn't canter.
