breed being shown in their true classical style.
The

Sport Therapy Courses
Equine
Sport Therapy are running a series of one and two day courses
throughout the year starting on April 15th / 16th at Lucy
Thompson's yard on the Kent/Surrey border.
The
courses run by Chris Caden-Parker, an experienced equine
sports therapist and Lucy Thompson, former Open European
Three Day Event Champion, are designed to maximise the performance
of both horse and rider. The topics covered include assessment
of natural balance and co-ordination of the horse and rider
and how to overcome weaknesses and improve communication.
"With
the event and show season just beginning, we are keen to
encourage riders to maximise their horses and their own
potential by understanding the effect of rider influence
and horse imbalance. We have designed the courses to cater
for all levels of ability, from amateur to top professionals

Towcester
by-pass A43 a safer road to cross
British
Horse Society advises Highways Agency on Pegasus crossing
for busy dual carriageway
The A43 at Abthorpe, near Towcester in Northamptonshire
is now a safer road to cross thanks to work by the
Highways Agency, advised by members of the BHS. County
bridleways representative John Shenfield was actively
involved in the provision of the Pegasus crossing
which was officially opened yesterday (13 March).
|
Four
local riders, including Theresa Hartley who runs a livery
yard nearby, several cyclists, walkers and a dog attended
the opening which is believed to be one of the first of
its kind in the country as it has necessitated the need
for a 'horse corral' on the central reservation. The A43,
now a busy dual carriageway, has barred the way for many
horse riders in the area from accessing safe off-road riding
since it was upgraded from a single carriageway as it literally
chopped the Grafton Way Bridleway in two. John Shenfield
and Ann Scott, a local rider, have worked hard for over
three years to have a crossing put in place and went so
far as to hold a demonstration at the site in October 2001.
Several
improvements have been made to the approaches for both riders
and vehicles with advance warning signs to alert drivers.
Neil Doherty, the Highways Agency project manager for the
crossing, said "We appreciate the assistance from the
British Horse Society and local riders who freely gave their
advice and help, alongside our own designers, contractors
and partners in Northamptonshire in perfecting the designs
of the new crossing.

Class Riders And World Class Horses Need World Class
Grooms
The
pivotal role that elite grooms play in the performance
of world class horses and riders is recognised by
the British Equestrian Federation: to win more medals
Great Britain's elite riders must recruit, retain
and work with the best grooms.
|
A
working group has been set up to look at the elite grooming
profession in Great Britain. The group, Chaired by Andrew
Finding, includes Helen Huggett, BEF Executive Officer,
Kathryn Payne, BEF Communications Co-ordinator, John McEwan,
BEF Director of Equine Sports Science and Medicine and Lucy
Katan, an ex-International Dressage groom of the highest
level.
Lucy
Katan is already making history as the first groom to be
invited to speak at such high profile events as the Equestrian

Apprentice
Masterclass
Ian
Stark OBE, Great Britain's Olympic Three Day Eventing Champion
put 13 of Derbyshire's Equestrian Modern Apprentices through
their paces at the Masterclass 2003, organised by Stubbing
Court Combined Training Group.
The
lucky students were nominated by their employers and assessors
for the Masterclass 2003 and Stubbing Court CTG's 'Trainee
of the Year' competition, a reward for excellence at work
and commitment to the qualification during the year.
The
apprentices had to ride, jump and lunge horses that they
had never seen before, a task made much more difficult under
the expert eye of Ian Stark. Ian, who is four times Olympic
Silver Medallist, European Champion and three times winner
of Badminton Horse Trials gave the riders professional coaching
in the disciplines. During the afternoon Ian went on to
lead an invaluable discussion with the apprentices and their
trainers in the schooling and care of event horses up to
Olympic standard.

Double
The Gate For Second Midlands Fair
The
Midlands Equine Fair, which took place at the Three
Counties Showground for the second year on 8 and 9 March,
has been a resounding success with more than twice as
many people visiting the Fair as came to it last year.
Well
over 4,300 people came along to experience a wide range
of horse-related entertainment, advice - and shopping.
Highlights of the Fair included international three-day
eventer Blyth Tait and four in hand carriage driving
champion, Dick Lane. |
Horse
welfare was high on the Fair's agenda, and presentations
by the Thoroughbred Rehabilitation Centre (which brought
along former racehorses Jolly Jester and Rebel), the International
League for the Protection of Horses (the ILPH) and the Brackenhill
Stud (which specialises in the natural rearing of horses)
all helped to bring this message home.
Charities
did well at the Fair. John Channon from the ILPH commented:
"This was a good Fair, and when taken as part of Contour
Exhibitions' other Equine Fairs in the South West, the North
and Scotland is very successful for us, both in terms of
awareness and fundraising." The Shelter for Horses
and Donkeys in the Holy Land (SHADHL) also found the Fair
to be useful. This was the first equestrian event the charity
has used for promotional purposes, and the pre-Fair publicity
combined with the numbers of visitors who made a donation
have helped the charity to carry on for another period and
resulted in still more patrons adopting donkeys.

British
Horse Society sponsor reaps reward
The
British Horse Society is delighted that Ashby House,
sponsors of the British World Championship TREC Team
in 2002 and new sponsors for the 2003 British Young
Riders TREC Team, have reaped the rewards of their sponsorship
with increased export sales. |
On
hearing that the World Championship TREC Team did not have
a sponsor last year, Director Ben Partridge approached Business
Link in Leicestershire and they put him in touch with Trade
Partners UK, a government organisation that provides support
services to UK companies trading overseas. With the competition
taking place in Spain and being attended by the media from
Spain, France and Britain it was an ideal situation for
sponsorship.
The
Team finished a creditable fourth of seventeen, having to
make use of borrowed horses, competing under some difficult
conditions.

Hammond
Communications Group declares Kentucky Horse Park film progress
Kentucky
Horse Park Foundation member Mary Wathen has been hard at
work these past few months with her fundraising efforts
for the new film In All Its Glory. Hammond Communications
Group, Inc. is pleased to announce that Fifth Third Bank
has come on board as the Theatre Sponsor. Other contributors
include W.T. Young, the Alex G. Campbell, Jr. Foundation,
Kentucky Thoroughbred Association (KTA), and Keeneland.
Hammond
won a bid to produce the new film for the park, which is
scheduled for debut in late 2003. In All Its Glory will
replace the classic, but aging production Thou Shalt Fly
Without Wings, the park's current film, which has been shown
for over twenty-five years. The Kentucky Horse Park's importance
to our industry and our region is well known. The film may
influence over 800,000 park visitors and future industry
participants each year. It is an exciting venture for Hammond
to complete production on this showcase piece.
In
the next few weeks, Hammond will be looking for a local
foaling scene to shoot and is relying on the cooperation
of some of the area Thoroughbred farms. The crew will also
be out and about at many local and national events over
the next several months finalizing filming of different
equine disciplines such as Eventing, Dressage, Show Jumping,
Reining, Racing and Driving.

New
Airflex Saddlecloth from Comfort Zone Equestrian
THE
success of the revolutionary Airflex Saddle Pad, which
allows total freedom and flexibility for the horse,
has led to the launch of the Airflex GP Saddlecloth
from Comfort Zone Equestrian.
The totally breathable saddlecloth uses the same award
winning technology - Eva Modified Closed Cell Polythelene
- as the Airflex pad.
Constructed
from small hexagonal pads, locked into a mesh, these
move with the horse's muscle structure, removing sheer
pressure and dispersing direct pressure on the back.
|
As
the saddlecloth is totally flexible, the horse's muscle
structure is allowed to move, giving freedom throughout
the back, which in turn helps improve paces. Please

Member's Bill: Equine Welfare (Ragwort Control) Act
published
The
British Horse Society's initiative has plenty of support
The
Private Member's Bill initiated by the British Horse
Society and aimed at reducing equine fatalities due
to ragwort poisoning has now been published. The Bill,
sponsored by John Greenway MP (Cons) for Ryedale in
Yorkshire, has its Second Reading on Friday 21 March. |
The
Bill is supported by the British Horseracing Board, the
National Farmers Union, equine welfare organisations and
a large number of cross party MPs. It amends the Weeds Act
1959 to place a duty of responsibility on public authorities
such as highways authorities and statutory undertakers to
'take all reasonable steps to remove ragwort from relevant
land occupied by him and to prevent the growth or regrowth
of ragwort on such land'. The Government is taking a keen
interest in the Bill as it affects authorities that are
governed outside of DEFRA's remit.

Nicoll
to provide challenging course at Windsor
Richard
Nicoll from the USA is set to provide another challenging
course in his second year as Course Designer at the
Land Rover International Driving Grand Prix during Royal
Windsor Horse Show, 14th-18th May. Land Rover has confirmed
that it will be sponsoring for the second year and to
mark the continuing sponsorship, Nicoll will be introducing
two new hazards, with the remainder being carefully
updated.
Royal
Windsor is a favourite venue in the world of International
Driving, not only because of its high standard of competition
but also because it takes place in the exquisite settings
of Home Park Private and Windsor Great Park. Up to 80
entries are anticipated for the Land Rover International
Driving Grand Prix this year, including an entry from
HRH The Duke of Edinburgh. Over half the total number
of entries will be from foreign participants. |
The
organisers have plans to move the Driving event on dramatically
in the next 12 months and one visible change that will be
seen at this years event will be the influence of

New
service launched in equestrian security
A
brand new service in equestrian security has been launched
by Staffordshire based Saddle Safe, providing an electronic
tagging solution specifically for saddles.
Saddle
Safe utilise the Stoptheft® electronic tagging system,
which involves the installation of a tiny passive tag into
the saddle. Each tag is approximately 11.5mm x 2.12mm in
size and pre-programmed with one of over 550 billion possible
unique ID codes. The tag ensures positive permanent identification
for the saddle and would be extremely difficult for a thief
to locate or remove once in place.
With
ever increasing reports of saddle and tack theft in the
UK, Saddle Safe's new service offers saddle owners a method
of obtaining positive identification for their saddle. Fitting
of a Stoptheft® electronic tag will have the added benefits
of dramatically reducing the resale value of the saddle
and in turn working as a deterrent to potential theft. Working
closely with the national Horsewatch scheme, Saddle Safe
aims to play a proactive role in assisting crime reduction
initiatives in the equestrian sector.

The
Training Tree: Suppleness
WAVERLY, WV--Suppleness is another mythunderstood word
in the horse industry. Suppleness simply means the ability
to bend without stiffness. We want the horse to have
loose, pliable jointshis hocks, his hips, his knees,
his shoulders, his poll and his jaw. There are other
joints that must be flexible, too, but generally when
we talk about a horses ability to bend, were
talking about one or another of those major joints.
|
If
a horse stiffens any of these joints, that stiffness goes
through his whole body. If the horse braces in his poll
or jaw, for example, nothing else is going to be loose
because he is locked against the riders hand and
that stiffness is going affect all his other joints to
some degree. Stiffness or resistance in any joint causes
a disruption of the energy flow throughout the horse.
Smooth transitions are a sign of a supple horse and, vice
versa, jerky, jumpy or jarring transitions signal resistance
somewhere.
Just
as some people are suppler or stiffer by nature, horses
are individuals. Some have short bunchy muscles, short
necks, straight pasterns, or other conformation traits
that make flexibility more difficult to achieve. Others
have long, lean muscles, long necks, and perfect shoulder
and hip angles that make bending their joints very easy
for them. There are a lot of different exercises trainers
can use to help any horse become looser and suppler in
his joints. The key is that these exercises need to be
done while the horse is moving in order for him to become
truly supple.

The
Ronnie Mutch Equitation Classic Necessitated a Work Off
of the Top Four
Wellington,
FL March 8, 2003 The Ronnie Mutch Equitation
Classic had 23 qualified riders competing all the
crème de la crème. Riders were scored by 2
Jumper Judges Mark Leone and McLain Ward; and two
Hunter Judges Kip Rosenthal and Margie Hough. A score
judged in the warm up area was added to each round. After
the first courese, 10 riders were asked to return. They
were to submit their own written course and then execute
it. There was one rider who did not receive a score in the
second round because she submitted and jumped 11 jumps when
the specifications of the class asked each rider to submit
a course of 8 10 jumps. After the second round, four
riders were asked to return to the ring. At this time, only
8 points separated these four riders overall scores. The
top four were Whitney Roper, Courtney McKay, Maggie McAlary
and Sloan Coles.

The

Architecturally beautiful with custom appointments and
