Madden Wins $100,000 Cosequin U.S. Open Jumper Championship, Presented by CN, To Close Winter Equestrian Festival’s Stay in Wellington

United States Defends Title in Samsung Nations’ Cup, Presented by CN

Wellington, FL—March 10, 2003— Beezie Madden of Cazenovia, NY, and Judgement won the $100,000 Cosequin U.S. Open Jumper Championship, Presented by CN, March 9 at the Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington, FL.

Out of a field of 30 horse-and-rider combinations, only two qualified to return for the jump-off. Madden and Judgement, owned by Iron Spring Farm, returned first and had a clean round with a good pace. Anne Kursinski of Flemington, NJ, with her 1996 Atlanta Olympic mount Eros, owned by The Eros Group, returned second and made good time but had the last jump down to score 4 faults. Todd Minikus and Gardenio, owned by the YZ Partners, came in third with 1 time fault in the first round.

The United States successfully defended its title in dramatic fashion by winning the Samsung Nations’ Cup, Presented by CN on March 7.

The U.S. finished with a score of 8 faults to edge Ireland who finished the two rounds with 9 faults. Canada came in third with 38 faults.

After Ireland’s Kevin Babington rode fault-free in Ireland’s final ride at the Palm Beach Polo Equestrian Club, Sydney Olympic veteran Margie Engle of Wellington, FL, entered the ring knowing that she needed a clean ride on Hidden Creek’s Jones to clinch the win. One rail down would give the win to the Irish team and one time fault would force a jump-off.

“Yes, I felt the pressure,” the seven-time American Grandprix Association Rider of the Year said. “I could have been the bum of Wellington real quick.”

That did not turn out to be the case. Exhibiting the skill and nerve that have gained her more Grandprix wins than any rider in U.S. history, Engle guided her 12-year-old Dutch-bred to her second clear round of the day giving the U.S. the win in Wellington’s Nations’ Cup for the second straight year.

“I’ve been with Margie many times and she’s very good in pressure situations,” said U.S. Equestrian Team (USET) chef d’equipe Frank Chapot. “That’s why we put her in that position, we know she’ll come through.”

Matching Engle’s double-clean performance was her Sydney Olympic teammate Lauren Hough, also of Wellington. Riding leadoff for the U.S. team, Hough rode double clear on Windy City, an 11-year-old Holsteiner.

“I rested him this week, this was his only class,” Hough said. “By the third or fourth fence of the first round, he was in the groove and he felt just great the whole second round.”

Madden scored 4 faults in each of the two rounds on Conquest II and McLain Ward of Brewster, NY scored 8 and 4 faults in the two rounds on Rio.

Also on March 7, Ashley Baker and Dollar D’Amour won the $15,000 High Amateur-Owner Jumper Classic, a Show Jumping Hall of Fame Jumper Classic Series class. Tani Zeidler Anderson and Illusion, who currently lead the Hall of Fame Series Amateur-Owner standings, finished second. Bob Kraut aboard his Caviar were third.

Aimee Aron won the High Junior Jumper class with Kinloch Enterprises’ Cora Fina. Michael Morrissey and Carrera were second.

Laura Chapot won the 1.35 m Speed Class with Sprite, while Jan Marie Milani, riding her Bob, won the Adult Amateur Jumpers, 18-35 yrs.

Twenty-three qualified riders competed in the Ronnie Mutch Equitation Classic on March 8. A score judged in the warm-up area was added to the score of each round. After the first course, 10 riders were asked to return and submit their own written course of 8 – 10 jumps and then execute it. One rider was disqualified when she submitted and jumped a course consisting of 11 obstacles.

After the second round, four riders were asked to return to the ring. At this time, only 8 points separated the top four riders -- Whitney Roper, Courtney McKay, Maggie McAlary and Sloan Coles.

They were asked to switch horses with no outside assistance and then remain in the ring. Coles and McAlary switched horses, and McKay switched with Roper. Next, they were asked to jump the first 8 jumps of the original course.

In the end, Roper maintained the top position and took home the Championship. McKay took second place, Coles finished third, and McAlary was fourth.

The $20,000 1.5 m Classic saw 65 entries attempt the course with temperatures in the 90s. Eleven returned for the jump-off, including May, a Swedish Warmblood mare ridden for Pasmore Stables by Laura Kraut. The pair sailed over the course in a smooth, fast time of 38.992 seconds and took the lead, which they held until the last horse in the jump-off.

McLain Ward and Couletto K James were last to go in the jump-off, but proved to be the best with a time of 37.571 seconds. Ward also took third place with Hurricane, owned by Sarah B. Willeman and Turnabout Farm.

Ward also won the $10,000 Cosequin 1.5 m Classic with Sasha, owned by Ward and Harry R. Gill. Kraut came in second again riding Joyce 8, owned by Summit Partners.
