Cup Show Jumping - Coyle 20th In First Class
In
the first of three classes that will decide the winner
of the Show Jumping World Cup, Ireland's Trevor Coyle
finished in the middle of the field last night in Las
Vegas, with a 20th position in the blistering speed
class at Las Vegas. There
were 41 riders and horses in the class, but three did
not start. The class was won by the US's own McLain
Ward, riding <Viktor>.
Tonight
(Friday) the Armagh-born rider, who is now 44, competes
with his American-owned mare <Fleur> in a jump-off
class where the fences will max out at a massive 1m50
to 1m60, but he is likely to feel more comfortable here
than in yesterday's speed class. Because of time differences,
the result will not be known until Saturday morning,

Garden
State Horse Show Remembers Dr. Robert C. Rost With Donation
To Branchville Fire House
AUGUSTA,
NJApril 15, 2003 In addition to their regular
contribution to Centenary College and its scholarship fund,
this year The Garden State Horse Show, held April 30
May 4 at the Sussex County Fairgrounds in Augusta, NJ, will
also be making a donation to the Branchville Hose Company
#1 in memory of Dr. Robert C. Rost.
Dr.
Rost, a long time resident of Branchville and a member of
the Branchville Volunteer Fire Company from 1959 to 1972,
was an integral part of the Garden State family
of judges and course designers. Rost, one of the first professional
course designers in the United States, was also influential
in the use of metal jump cups, wing standards, measured
distances, and electric timers. His absence will be sorely
missed by everyone at the Garden State Horse Show.
What
many people in the horse community may not have known about
Dr. Rost was his participation in the volunteer fire company,
a relationship that was strong in the early years. In the
later years his veterinary practice grew and kept him answering
calls while the horse shows often drew him to different
parts of the country.

Caroline
Wins At Belton
KELSO-based
Caroline Powell and her own Corbally Oak captured
the Equissage-sponsored Novice section at Belton Park
Horse Trials in Lincolnshire.
This was Corbally Oak's third novice competition of
the season and Caroline is delighted with his progress.
Said Caroline: "He is a big horse and has taken
quite a long time to mature, but he is now improving
and I was delighted with his win at Belton."
The Equissage Novice Section drew more than 43 entries
and the Irish-bred gelding made little of the course.
Added Caroline: "He is a big galloping horse
and although the novice cross-country at Belton is
always regarded as quite stiff, he coped very well. |
Tim
Savage of section sponsor Equissage said: "The two
days at Belton were wonderful. It was the first time I had
been to the event and I was very impressed. "As
sponsors of William Fox-Pitt it is great to be involved
at the top end of the sport, but supporting a novice section
as we did at Belton is also very important."

New
York City Venue Announced By National Horse Show Association
New
York, New York (April 15, 2003) -- The National Horse Show
Association of America announced today that its venue for
the new Metropolitan National Horse Show of 2003 in New
York City will be Manhattans Pier 94 and the adjacent
Show Piers on the Hudson, just west of 12th Avenue (West
Side Highway) at 54th Street. The dates are Wednesday, October
29, through Sunday, November 2.
Joining
the Nationals president, Alan F. Balch, and Eugene
R. Mische, chairman, in making the announcement, were Kenneth
J. Podziba, Commissioner of the New York City Sports Commission,
and Chuck Newman, representing Pier 94 and the Show Piers
on the Hudson (www.showpiers.com).
Balch
commented, Our very thorough investigation over the
last year of all possible venues in Manhattan and the other
New York boroughs led us to many possibilities, but none
approached this ones overall feasibility. We looked
at a variety of indoor and outdoor venues, well over 20
in all, and each presented opportunities. Pier 94 and the
Show Piers, however, not only presented us with possibilities
for great innovation, but also will make for some of the
nicest indoor conditions that our competitors will ever
have enjoyed, anywhere.

Eclipse
Press Introduces A "Classic" For Racing And Breeding
Enthusiasts
Lexington, KYApril 15, 2003 Winning a Triple
Crown race the Kentucky Derby, Preakness, and Belmont
Stakes is the ultimate goal for Thoroughbred owners
and breeders. These races are considered "Classics"
for their challenge and prestige, and only the cream of
the horse crop attempt all three. In American Classic Pedigrees,
author and pedigree researcher Avalyn Hunter profiles and
examines the pedigrees of the winners of the five American
Classic races from 1914 through 2002: the Triple Crown events
and the Kentucky Oaks and Coaching Club American Oaks for
fillies.
In addition to examining each horse's sire line and female
family, Hunter looks at how the horse has contributed
or not to the Thoroughbred breed. This monumental
work is an important tool for pedigree analysts and breeders
who are trying to find breeding patterns that might lead
to their own Classic winner a horse such as Secretariat,
Man o' War, or 2002 Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner
War Emblem.

Felicity
Coulthard Endorses The Saddle Company
UK
based disabled dressage rider Felicity Coulthard, is
endorsing the Saddle Company who have supplied her with
their Verona Dressage Saddle. Felicity suffered a career-threatening
fall during training over 2 years ago after which her
elbow was held together for 12 months by a plate being
bolted into place. 18 year-old Felicity told us "
this along with my cerebral palsy has made the right
hand side of my body weak. Unfortunately, this has meant
that over the past 12 months I have had to virtually
learn to ride again!"
The Saddle Company offered their support to Felicity
after learning about her fight to get back into the
saddle. "The Saddle Company have been brilliant,"
said Felicity. "The Verona Dressage Saddle that
has been supplied to me was specially made with detachable
front and back knee rolls which I can alter to assist
my leg position. What I really like most about the Verona
is the soft feel which makes me feel closer to the horse
than I have felt with other saddles. In fact, I feel
it has improved my overall balance and riding position".

Establishing
a Proper Relationship with Equines :Part IV: Confidence
TRUST : RESPECT : CONFIDENCE : COMMUNICATION : UNDERSTANDING
One of the most fascinating stories I've heard has been
passed down through the ages about a young man named Alexander
and a young, frightened horse named Bucephalus. As the story
goes, it was the custom in the days of old for the breeders
of horses to bring their best stock to the courtyards of
royalty to be considered for purchase. The courtiers of
the court would ride the horses as the prospective buyers
observed. On one such occasion at the court of Phillip of
Macedonia, one of the young stallions, Bucephalus, seemed
very anxious and inattentive. The courtiers proclaimed him
to be unrideable. Young Alexander, who was the son of Phillip
of Macedonia, proclaimed that he could ride the horse and
wanted him for his own. No one present believed that the
young man could ride the nervous horse, but figured that
Alexander might learn a good lesson by trying.Everyone present
watched in amazement as the young Alexander lead the horse
away from the shadow that was the cause of his apprehension,
and then mounted him and rode him back into that same shadow.
Years later, Alexander the Great rode this same horse to
victory over his enemies in many battles. The horse, Bucephalus
became famous and had a town named after him. How wonderful
it would have been to watch as this young man gave a lesson
to the older, more experienced horsemen. It is no wonder
that throughout history many great leaders have also been
greathorsemen.
Alexander the Great was successful in his endeavor because
he believed in himself and in the horse's ability to overcome
its fears. He did not act foolishly by jumping on the horse's
back immediately but instead made a sensible plan by evaluating
the situation. Alexander determined the cause of the animals
fear, the shadow. He then took the horse from the source
of his fear, taught the horse to face his fear and then
to overcome it. His accomplishment on that fateful day did
not require brilliance. It did require desire, determination,
careful thought and planning to turn a negative experience
into a positive one.
The opposite of confidence is insecurity. Insecurity is
born out of a lack of positive experience in a given situation,
combined with negative thought or
imagery. It is easy enough to just say that one should simply
get over it and replace the negative thoughts with positive.
If we could only make that
substitution and not just cover over the apprehension, we
could easily overcome our fears. A more practical approach
would be to understand that the probability of the worst
happening is not very realistic. We can then set aside the
negative thoughts and fears, focus on a positive outcome
and mentally create a plan to minimize the danger. In this
way we can project confidence in our self and to the animal
we are working with and create a positive experience. If
on the other hand we choose to dwell on our fear, we will
most likely create an even worse situation.

Laura
Boynton King Will Change Your Life
Wellington, Florida April 14, 2003 Laura
Boynton King has a passion: a passion for helping
people turn negative attitudes and behaviors into
positive ones, conquer fears, attain goals once thought
unattainable, to be all they can be. And she succeeds.
Over and over again.
But
how, you ask? One word: hypnosis. No, no, not the
stuff of those B-movies in which the weird hypnotist,
sitting in a dimly-lit room, dangles his pocket watch
like a metronome, gaining total mind control over
his vulnerable subject. Lauras technique has
nothing to do with mind control: Laura helps people
help themselves.
Lauras interest in hypnosis began some 25 years
ago when in search of a better understanding of her
own self. Like everything Laura does, she dove into
the field with a vengeance. She studied for 24 years
with renowned hypnotist and psychologist Dorothy Gates,
Ph.D; she trained at the Omni Hypnosis Training Center
and at the Don Mottin Sports Hypnosis Training Center;
she received her neuro-linguistic psychology training
from Dr. William Horton; and she trained in motivational
techniques with Anthony Robbins. |
Laura
is presently a certified hypnotist, sports hypnotist and
neuro-linguistic psychologist. About three years ago, Laura
founded Summit Dynamics LLC, a multi-faceted company that
produces Lauras CDs and publications. She regularly
sees clients in her offices in Wellington and Lake Park,
with occasional travel to see out-of-state clients. And,
all the while, Laura finds time for the horses and riding
she loves.
Laura
has proven that, through hypnosis, a person can reprogram
the negative attitudes and feelings buried in his subconscious,
leading to life-changing results. During the state of total
relaxation achieved while hypnotized, ones subconscious
goes into a heightened state of awareness. This allows the
hypnotist to make positive suggestions, ultimately ridding
the subconscious of the negative thoughts and reprogramming
it towards the positive.

A
Horse, Of Course
by Don Blazer
Ive met some heroes.
Some
wear a tiny bell so the blind can find them.
Some
are the blind who seek them.
Some
are staff or volunteers.
All
the heroes have taken up the sword against the most
formidable enemy of all
..the enemy within each
of us who yells, I cant. |
Ive
said time and again, If you can conceive it, you can
achieve it. But Ive never had to struggle to
prove it. Ive never even had a difficult time. Everything
for me has been easy.
But
it isnt easy for the heroes.
Some
heroes watch day after day after day as their children struggle
with physical disabilities. I try to comprehend, but I cant
truly know the heartache they must feel, or the courage
it takes to begin another day. Some heroes are children
inflicted with disabilities. You cant
tell them why they must suffer the pain, or the torment
of trying to do what for me is the simplest thing, but for
them is a monumental task.

ILPH
Issues Warning to Horse Owners with New Equine Passports
Encouraging
talks were held this week with DEFRA officials at
a BEF (British Equestrian Federation) meeting at the
National Agricultural Centre, Stoneleigh.
DEFRA
officials had been invited, together with other interested
parties from the horse industry, to discuss the draft
equine passport order released by the Government earlier
this year.
During
the meeting the ILPH (International League for the
Protection of Horses) tabled a proposal to change
the controversial declaration or 'opt out' clause,
which was a cause for concern among horse welfare
organisations.
|
The
ILPH proposal, endorsed by the BEF Working Party and received
very favourably by DEFRA official Allan Buchan, was that
"the declaration that the horse could not go for human
consumption could only be made at the time that an Annex
IV drug was administered, or at the end of its life."
Comments
John Smales, ILPH Chief Executive, "By removing the
responsibility of the declaration away from the first owner
registering the horse, the horse's welfare at the end of
its life will not be compromised and the possible closure
of England's 2 equine abattoirs can be averted.

Finding
Balance In The Trainer/Landlord Equation
Trainers
often do not own their own facility. There are several reasons
for this. Some prefer to focus on training and not deal
with property acquisition and maintenance. Some are just
getting started in building their reputation and clientele.
Facility ownership may be in their future, but not feasible
during start-up. Some trainers own a facility that they
operate out of during most of the year, but move for a season
to another location. This may be to locate closer to competitions,
top-level trainers, or for year-round operations at an indoor.
Horse property owners often look for trainers to operate
out of their facility. Some horse property owners have in-depth
horse industry exposure, and some have none at all. Some
horse property owners have refocused their own horse business
by specializing in one particular aspect of many that they
previously offered. Some have decided to curtail their entire
equine business, but wish to have the facility used by someone
else. In this way, they have part of their facility available
for use by another horse professional.
The interface between those owning facilities and those
looking for a facility to run their business can be challenging.
Though there are many shared goals between these two, not
all goals are. When these topics are not articulated and
well discussed from the beginning, they can prove to be
a huge bug-a-boo over time.

Carey
Takes Eighth In Monaco Grand Prix
Army
rider Lt. Shane Carey on the remarkable 11 yr-old Clover
Hill gelding <Killossery>, came tantalisingly
close to success in tonight's (Saturday) prestigious
Grand Prix du Prince de Monaco at Monte Carlo, leading
the 41-strong field after the first round with a clear
round and the fastest time of 55.01 seconds, a whisker
ahead of Brazil's Bernardo Alvez on Corino 7, who went
round in a clear of 55.34 seconds. Only eight riders
made it through to the jump-off.
Limerick-born Carey had scored a Sixth in Friday's speed
class with the Master Imp gelding <Ballycumber>,
but was obviously holding Killossery in reserve for
the final competition of the Principality's prestige
show, the horse having had only one previous outing
since Thursday. |
But
one fence down by Killossery in the second round caused
Carey to slip down the leaderboard, with Alves taking Second
with another clear round, and the former World Champion,
fellow-Brazilian Rodrigo Pessoa on <Gandini Bianca d'Amaury>
slotting into First with the fastest second-round time of
28.34 seconds. Switzerland's Markus Fuchs, riding <Royal
Charmer>, was Third.
