horse Carey Takes Eighth In Monaco Grand Prix

Army rider Lt. Shane Carey on the remarkable 11 yr-old Clover Hill gelding <Killossery>, came tantalisingly close to success in tonight's (Saturday) prestigious Grand Prix du Prince de Monaco at Monte Carlo, leading the 41-strong field after the first round with a clear round and the fastest time of 55.01 seconds, a whisker ahead of Brazil's
Bernardo Alvez on Corino 7, who went round in a clear of 55.34 seconds. Only eight riders made it through to the jump-off.

Limerick-born Carey had scored a Sixth in Friday's speed class with the Master Imp gelding <Ballycumber>, but was obviously holding Killossery in reserve for the final competition of the Principality's prestige show, the horse having had only one previous outing since Thursday.

But one fence down by Killossery in the second round caused Carey to slip down the leaderboard, with Alves taking Second with another clear round, and the former World Champion, fellow-Brazilian Rodrigo Pessoa on <Gandini Bianca d'Amaury> slotting into First with the fastest second-round time of 28.34 seconds. Switzerland's Markus Fuchs, riding <Royal Charmer>, was Third.
