PSOA
Launches Showjumping "Fun" Series For Affiliated
Riders
The
Permanent Show Organisers Association, whose members run
most of the UK' s equestrian centres, is to launch a new
showjumping series aimed at affiliated riders who are "jumping
for fun."
It
includes classes for both senior and junior riders, with
successful rider qualifying directly to a two-day final
at the National Agricultural Centre, Stoneleigh, in August
2004.
PSOA
chairman Norman Bargh said: "We have run the Trailblazer
series for unaffiliated, leisure riders now for four years,
and have been asked time and time again why we had no classes
for affiliated riders who just jumped for fun. The demand
has become so great that we have decided to go one better
and have a complete series for these people who form the
backbone of the British Showjumping Association."

Protection For Foals With New Actimune Foal Gel
ACTIMUNE
has been gaining popularity in the UK to help horses
cope with stressful situations, such as training,
traveling or weaning, giving them added protection
against viral and bacterial infection when they are
most susceptible.
Now the UK distributor, American Thoroughbred Products
Ltd, has announced the arrival of the new ACTIMUNE
FOAL GEL. Specially developed to provide added protection
to foals from birth, ACTIMUNE FOAL GEL supplies nutrients
to help stimulate the immune function at this vulnerable
stage in the foal's life. ACTIMUNE FOAL GEL is packed
in an easy to administer syringe that contains 60cc
of gel sufficient for four days. |
Once
the foal's digestive system is more developed and he is
eating hard food, he can be switched to the feed supplement
form of Actimune. This unique feed supplement has been developed
to maintain a healthy immune system and can be useful for
horses of any age.

Full
Time Groom Graduates to Fully Qualified Saddler
Rachael
Argo, a full time working groom at ILPH Belwade Farm
in Aboyne, Aberdeenshire has recently qualified as
a saddler, becoming one of only three qualified saddlers
in Northern Scotland.
Says
Eileen Gillen, ILPH Belwade Farm Manager, "Many
horses and ponies come into the ILPH with problems
that can be traced back to badly fitting saddles,
so for us to have a fully qualified saddler on the
staff is such a bonus."
|
Three
years ago Rachael, then working as Head Groom at Belwade,
decided to start her official training as a saddler, with
help from the ILPH. During that time she was apprenticed
to the ILPH Master Saddler, Andre Bubear and has gained
practical experience with the Kings Troop Royal Horse Artillery

Legally-Blind
Rider Tory Watters To Compete At The 120th National
Horse Show
Wellington,
Florida November 21, 2003 -- Tory Watters was
a happy, athletic, horse-crazy teenager, living in
Cincinnati with her parents, when she was diagnosed
with a brain tumor and damaged optic nerves. Tory
had been riding horses since the age of two and had
been winning blue ribbons in the childrens hunter
division for many years. At the age of 14, major headaches
and blurred vision resulted in a life-changing operation
and the removal of a malignant tumor. No follow-up
radiation was required, and, luckily, the cancer was
stopped in its tracks. However, Tory was left with
no vision in her right eye and with 20/200 vision
in her left eye.
|
So
where did Tory go from there? Right back to what she always
loved and knew best: horses, jumping and competition. While
Tory sees life as a big, impressionist painting, she has
learned to adjust. There is nothing -- short of driving
a car --- that Tory cannot and will not do. Her positive
attitude and supportive family life have made Tory a winner
in more ways than one.

Seabiscuit
Hero On GLC
American
Thoroughbred Products Ltd have an unusual interest in the
recently released film, Seabiscuit. They are the UK distributors
for GLC5500, the equine version of the amazing product that
enabled Hall of Fame Jockey, Gary Stevens, to come out of
retirement to race again and to play the part of jockey
George Woolf in the film.
Gary Stevens was forced to retire from racing in 1999 due
to arthritic damage to his knee. The doctors told him he
had run out of options and even everyday activities caused
him pain. None of the products or therapies he trid had
any effect. Then he tried GLC supplement.
Gary takes up the story, "After a few weeks I knew
I had found a product that would make a difference. A short
10 months since the most difficult announcement of my life,
I was back in the saddle riding world champions. Not only
have I been able to come out of retirement, but I am able
to play with my children and play a around of golf without
pain".

British
Horse Society points the way forward for rights of way
Hundreds
of riders throughout the South West will benefit from
the start of a new Access and Rights of Way training
programme from The British Horse Society (BHS). Access
and Rights of Way volunteers from the BHS and Associated
Bridleways Groups in the South West, attended a Level
1 Training session held recently (15 November), which
covered topics such as Highway Law, the history of the
Definitive Map, Finding Bridleways, and Rights of Way
Improvement Plans. |
Access
to safe off-road riding is needed by all horse riders to
enable them to avoid the risks of riding on increasingly
busy roads, and to further enjoy the pleasures of riding
in the countryside. Many volunteers work on their behalf
and are committed to maintaining and improving the bridleway
network throughout the country. This often involves dealing
with Local and District Councils, Highways Agencys and other
official offices.

Vaccinations
and volunteers debated at British Riding Clubs Conference
Vaccinations
and volunteers were the main topics on the agenda
at the recent British Riding Clubs' (BRC) Conference
held at Stoneleigh Park in Warwickshire (16 November),
attended by members from across the country.
BRC
requires competitors to produce current equine flu
vaccination certificates for all its qualifier and
championship competitions, and the debate, which produced
strong feeling, centred around whether this should
continue. With the national championships attracting
competitors from across the UK, and with horse welfare
in mind and to prevent any risk of spreading disease,
the unanimous agreement was that the requirement should
stay.

British
Horse Society celebrates outstanding achievements at
annual November Awards ceremony
The
British Horse Society celebrated outstanding achievements
with its annual November Awards ceremony last week (12
November). Presented by the Rt Hon Robin Cook, award
recipients ranged from BHS volunteers to local authorities,
all reflecting the tremendous work that is undertaken
to benefit horses and riders.
Achievements
for access & rights of way, road safety, long service,
young rider support, training, promotion of the BHS
and work overseas were all represented in the seventeen
awards, presented at Saddlers' Hall in London by permission
of the Worshipful Company of Saddlers. |
Following
the ceremony Robin Cook, who has recently accepted an invitation
by the BHS to become an Honorary Vice-President, spoke of
his involvement with horses, having taken up riding as a
hobby later in life. He found horse riding relaxing, as
he had 'yet to find a horse that wanted to talk politics'.

Historic
day for The British Horse Society as Ragwort Control
Bill goes through
Yesterday
(18 November) became an historic day in the work of
The British Horse Society (BHS) as its Ragwort Control
Bill completed its passage through parliament and now
awaits automatic Royal Assent in the next day or so. |
The
Bill's journey started almost exactly a year ago following
the 2002 ballot for Private Members' Bills. The BHS approached
all MPs drawn in the ballot asking for support for a Bill
to protect equines against the traumas and death resulting
in consuming Common Ragwort. John Greenway, MP for Ryedale
in North Yorkshire and drawn No 13 in the ballot, took up
the request and gave it his whole-hearted support.

America saddle-log program
FORT
WORTH, Texas-The American Paint Horse Association
(APHA) announced recently that it has improved and
expanded its innovative Ride America saddle-log program,
making it easier than ever for recreational riders
to join.
|
What
is Ride America?
The Ride America program is for people who enjoy experiencing
the great outdoors on horseback. For time spent riding or
driving their American Paint Horses, participants receive
recognition and valuable prizes from APHA and its sponsors.
When
riders enroll in Ride America, they receive an official
time log and a Ride America patch. They record each hour
spent riding their American Paint Horse and as they move
through several achievement levels, APHA records their accomplishments
and rewards them with special patches.
Depending
on hours of riding reached, participants can also earn saddle
bags, halters, lead ropes, saddle pads and other valuable
merchandise. A time log must be kept for a participant's
riding or driving hours with a specific horse. There is
no time limit for riders to achieve their hours, as long

who has ridden the ten-year-old mare for most of her

season at Grand Prix level, she gives me a really
good feeling and just gets better and better."

2003/2004 FEI World Cup Jumping series in Berlin today
which brought a dramatic shake-up to the league leaderboard
as the young guns of international show jumping made

The
28 year old Dane set an impossible target when third
to go in the 13-horse jump-off with Equest Carnute
while Germanys Marco Kutscher, also 28 years
of age, now heads the league table after slotting
into runner-up spot today with Controe.
|
It
was a competition full of contradictions as five likely
contenders, including Germanys Ludger Beerbaum (Goldfever)
and Soren Von Ronne (Cantaro), retired in the opening round
and yet more than one-third of the field survived to go
through to the jump-off. The tight confines of the arena
added to the degree of difficulty with Olaf Petersens
track "the fences were more technical than expected
because the ring is not big" Thomas said afterwards.

Show Jumping Squad Wins Nations Cup at CSIO
Buenos Aires Clinches Berth in 2004 Samsung Super
League
GLADSTONE,
NEW JERSEYNovember 16, 2003The United
States Equestrian Team (USET) show jumping squad competing
in CSIO Buenos Aires won the Nations Cup and
secured a position for the United States in the 2004
Samsung Super League.
The
Samsung Super League, begun in 2003, limits participation
in eight select CSIO competitions (La Baule, Rome,
St. Gallen, Aachen, Dublin, Hickstead, Rotterdam,
and Barcelona) to only eight countries. Participation
at the level of competition found in the Samsung Super
League events is considered a critical component of
the USETs strategic plan for Olympic and international
success. Since invitations to Samsung Super League
events is often difficult to obtain for non-Super
League teams, it is important to be one of the eight

The
Knabstrupper
"About 20.000 years ago, after the ice age, the
Cro-Magnons were hunting in the area today known as
southern France. The cave paintings made by these hunters
still exist today in the caves of Lascaux and Pêche
Merle. These paintings prove that the white colour has
not developed through domestication, as previously thought,
but instead belong to the primeval colours. The paintings
prove that the genetic codes for spotted colour patterns
were present in the primeval horse and, through migration,
were spread all over the world. When the horse was domesticated
several thousand years later the genetic codes for spots
were still present and could be strengthened through
selective breeding. |
Denmark,
the oldest kingdom in the world, is by tradition a seafaring
nation thanks not least to the Vikings. Not only were the
Vikings capable seafarers, but they
were also considered to be excellent horsemen. Thus the
Norman descendants of the Vikings won the battle of Hastings
due to a highly trained cavalry, which could only have been
developed by people who prepared their horses through education
and selective breeding. In the 12th century a French priest
wrote to the French king that .the Danes have at their disposal
an outstanding population of horses that surpasses anything
he has hitherto seen... In the church of Skibby not far
from Knabstrup Hovedgaard is a frieze of murals showing
three young princes riding spotted horses. These murals
are entitled "Memento Mori" (remember death) and
thus tells us that secular decadence will be punished in
the afterworld. It further tells us that spotted horses
expressed decadence, wealth, arrogance and joie de vivre.
