Charity
Challenge Rides To Peru And Iceland |
The British Horse
Society is to run two more exciting riding challenges next year to
raise funds for the BHS Rescue Centre. For over a decade the BHS has
been actively rescuing and rehabilitating horses and ponies in cases
of neglect and cruelty. In 1997 the Society opened its first dedicated
national Rescue Centre. Based at Stonecroft yard at Oxhill in Warwickshire,
the Centre provides facilities where horses and ponies can be nursed
back to health under expert care and found new permanent homes.
The Inca Challenge is not for the faint hearted! Trekking through
the Andes in Peru on mountain ponies, following the Inca trail to
heights of 4650 metres, will require nerves of steel and a head for
heights. Challengers will need to be fit and capable of hiking up
and down gradients at altitude, often leading rather than riding your
mount. Cargo mules and a colourful group of Quechua speaking wranglers
will transport equipment and personal gear.

BHS Alarmed By Animal Health Bill
The British
Horse Society has expressed grave reservations about the Animal
Health Bill currently going through Parliament |
The proposals allow
for significant new powers to be granted to slaughter animals that
are healthy, have not been in contact with, or exposed to, a disease.
The proposals further allow for forced entry to premises to carry
out this slaughter. This does not only apply to FMD, but to any other
disease that the Minister sees fit to include.

The
Horse World Unites For National Laminitis Awareness Month
If only
preventing laminitis was simply a question of keeping fat
ponies away from rich grass, but every year horses and ponies
of every breed and discipline contract this excessively painful
illness.
|
The Laminitis Trust,
a charity founded by Robert Eustace, FRCVS, director of The Laminitis
Clinic in Wiltshire, has designated May 2001 Laminitis Awareness Month
to educate horse owners and riders on how best to avoid this crippling
and often fatal disease and to raise funds for vital research.
In its mildest
form laminitis presents as a mild lameness, a reluctance to move,
or, if more severely affected, the animal lying down to try and get
some relief from its painful feet. Sometimes the horse will be sweating,
groaning and blowing giving rise to the misdiagnosis of colic. During
severe attacks, however, the attachment between the pedal bone and
hoof capsule starts to fail. This is described as foundering. The
most severe form of founder is where the pedal bone becomes loose
within the hoof and is described as a "sinker" - the majority
of cases of which will die without rapid and expert treatment.

horse riders at a disadvantage compared with cyclists and motor cyclists.

HOYS
Booms!
Against a
backdrop of stars, approximately 45,000 visitors enjoyed six
magical days at the Horse of the Year Show (HOYS). With the
Show enjoying capacity crowds during prime performances, the
buoyant atmosphere at this year's Show was euphoric. Nick Skelton,
who has attended the show every year since 1973, commented that
the Show was the "best in 25 years." |
"The event
has been a resounding success" commented Mark Wein, a Director
of Grandstand Media Ltd, the Show Organisers. "Visitors came
to HOYS in their thousands to enjoy the unique mix of fierce competition,
superb displays and fantastic shopping that make up this unique annual
event."
HOYS is the pinnacle
of the national show jumping season, and is the one show that every
show jumper, from the junior riders through to the seniors, all want
to win. Perhaps one of the most prestigious classes is the Horse &
Hound Foxhunter Final, named after Sir Harry Llewellwyn's great horse
"Foxhunter", won this year by William Funnell on Mondriaan.
This class is seen as a pointer for the superstars of the future and
many winners have gone on to become great show jumping stars. Graham
Fletcher commented, "the whole show was pure entertainment"
with the show jumping "producing slick, enjoyable competitions
for competitors and spectators alike."

Ridgeway
Sponsored Ride
Earlier
this year equestrian legend Ginny Elliot accepted the invitation
by Spinal Research to become a Patron and in particular to
become the figure-head for their Saddle-Up Campaign. The Campaign
was developed for riders by riders to raise funds for a cause
that is close to their hearts - mending broken backs and necks.
"This issue is so important for riders. And Spinal Research's
work is vital for future generations of riders. I'm glad to
be part of it", was Ginny's response.
|
Spinal Research
believes that impending treatments will benefit those who have already
sustained paralysing injuries and prevent those who will break their
neck or back in the future from becoming permanently paralysed. The
Saddle-Up Campaign has already raised over £30,000 for the charity's
new research programme but they need to raise £3 million a year
to pay for clinical trials in 2005.
Ginny has supported
the Trust in so many ways, but she wanted to do something positive
to help get clinical trials up and running and she came up with the
idea of the Ridgeway Sponsored Ride. Ginny recalls the buzz of riding
into London over 15 years ago in support of the Wishing Well Appeal
and would like to recreate some of the goodwill she encountered on
her route to raise funds for Spinal Research.

South
Essex To The Rescue
South
Essex Insurance Brokers have donated a newly built, custom made
Oakley two horse lorry to the British Horse Society Rescue Centre.
|
Transport is essential
to the work of the BHS in rescuing neglected or severely abused horses
and ponies. "We need to be able to go and pick up a rescue case
at short notice", said Kerstin Alford, BHS head of welfare. "Having
our own lorry means that valuable time will not be lost in treating
the pony. Often a few hours can make the difference between life and
death for these poor creatures. We are delighted that South Essex
is helping so generously."
The lorry will
also be used for essential trips to the veterinary hospital, as well
as for the journey to the new home once the horse or pony has been
nursed back to health.

Body
Type and Proper Movement
©
Equine Management, Auction, and Appraisal Services, Inc
The horse
world, like many other industries, has its own language that
the uninitiated often find mystifying. Unfortunately many
people involved with horses still make mistakes with terms,
perpetuating confusion and misunderstandings between people.
It is very difficult to convey ideas and conditions to another
when uncertainty of the language exists.
|
One of the most
common areas where people err with the terminology is with conformation
and movement. Not only is one term mistaken for another, but misconceptions
abound over what is actually the proper word for the situation. An
understanding is essential to speak knowledgeably about horses and
comprehend how professionals handle faults and accentuate virtues
in conformation and movement.
Many faults related to conformation are not necessarily problematic
in themselves, but become so when paired with another defect.
Gait abnormalities may arise from many different sources. Conformation
defects will affect the horse's ability to move in a smooth regular
gait because the footfalls are affected. Age of the horse is also
an incriminating factor when problems develop in movement. Young horses
need time to develop their bodies and learn how to carry the tack
and rider. As they grow, they will go through periods of clumsiness
that must be tolerated and understood by the trainer until he once
again rebalances. Older horses will experience changes in their joints
and muscles that may alter his way of going. Arthritis may start causing
pain that affects the gait. Again the rider must be understanding
of what the horse is experiencing. A third culprit of gait problems
is rider error. An unbalanced seat, heavy hands or insecure leg could
interfere with how the horse moves. A lack of communication may also
cause the horse to take missteps, as he does not understand what the
rider is asking. In this situation it is critical for the rider to
evaluate his own ability in the saddle and take the lessons necessary
to polish his skills.
