Fifth In Nations Cup In Athens
Ireland's
'new breed' of Nations Cup show jumpers put up another
creditable performance in this afternoon's (Friday)
Samsung Nations Cup in Athens to finish fifth overall.
Italy, having a good end to the season after a dismal
start, came first, following a jump-off with Switzerland.
All
four Irish riders were taking part in only their second-ever
Nations Cup event, and competed well against more
experienced opponents in the warm and sunny conditions.
Ireland's
best performance came from David Quigley on Ashdale
Futuro, who would have had a double-clear but for
a single time fault first time around.

Devon,

Unlimiteds Pik L swept the small tour at the Dressage
at Devon show with scores in all three of their classes
hitting the definitive 70% mark. This hattrick continues
an amazing season that has resulted in more than 20

York. At Devon, a 72.333 in the Intermediaire I freestyle
capped off three days of showing that also included
a 71% in the Intermediaire I and a 70% in the Prix St.

Riding
and working with Pik L is such a pleasure, said
Dr. Parra. Hes extremely reliable and he
loves to show off. Combined with his natural suppleness
and strength, he makes a wonderful dressage partner.
Pik L is an imported Hanoverian stallion by Pik Bube

Weaning
your foal with Allen and Page - giving him the best
start in life
In
the first year of his life a foal will attain 90% of
his mature height and 95% of his bone growth, so it

steady growth and contain high levels of micronutrients,
which encourage steady growth, and Protexin Probiotics,
which help overcome the stressful effects of weaning
by establishing healthy levels of beneficial microflora
in the gut. Foal Pellets are the ideal feed for fast
growing thoroughbreds and foals, from 10 days through
to weaning, providing all the goodness and nutrients
needed to develop healthily through this crucial stage.

The
Fourth Annual Sidelines Equestrian Triathlon® to benefit
The Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Southern Florida
Wellington,
Florida September 29, 2003 -- The Make-A-Wish Foundation®
of Southern Florida (MAW) will be this years
beneficiary of The Fourth Annual Sidelines Equestrian Triathlon®
(the Triathlon). The Triathlon will be held
on Saturday, December 27, 2003, beginning at 1 pm (although
the gates will open at noon), at The Palm Beach Polo Equestrian
Club in Wellington.
What
is an equestrian triathlon? Teams of three are established:
one rider is a specialist in jumping, one in the precision
flatwork of dressage, the other in polo. Each team member
brings the horse of his/her discipline, except the polo
player will bring six polo ponies as each teammate will
ride two for a two-chukkar game. Each rider then competes
in the two other disciplines not his/her own. So, the dressage
rider will jump a course and play polo; the jumper rider
will ride a dressage test to music (musical freestyle) and
play polo; and the polo player will jump a course, ride
a dressage test and play polo (to help out his team and
keep the ball moving, but cannot score goals). As in past
years, top riders from each discipline will donate their
time, as well as that of their favorite horse or polo ponies,
to win the competition, have fun and raise money for the
charitable beneficiary.

Skelton
Makes History As Speed Jumping Springs Into Life At
Ascot |
Nick
Skelton, the 7/2 joint second favourite, made history at
Ascot Racecourse yesterday, winning the Ladbrokes Speed
Jumping Challenge - the worlds first ever Speed Jumping
event.
In a dramatic final Skelton, riding Pandur, crossed the
finish line second behind 20/1 shot Duncan Inglis on Lavaletto,
but took the inaugural Ladbrokes Speed Jumping Challenge
trophy by virtue of the fact that he successfully negotiated
the course without knocking down a single fence. Inglis,
meanwhile, lowered three.
One of the architects behind the concept of Speed Jumping,
Skelton boasted the remarkable record of being the only
rider on the day to get through all three races without
knocking down a fence. He was rewarded for his historic
victory with a cheque for £6,000 whilst Inglis collected
£4,000 for taking the runner-up spot. Mark Armstrong
on Rex and Geoff Billington on Timbuctoo finished third
and fourth respectively.

Country International Announces New Training Vacation with
Olympic Show Jumping Star Greg Best
Millbrook,
New YorkSeptember 29, 2003Greg Best, who rode
to Olympic glory in 1988, winning two Silver Medals aboard
his superstar horse, Gem Twist, is the host and instructor
of an exciting new riding and training program being offered
by Cross Country International at Bests equestrian
center in New Zealand.
The
week-long program welcomes riders of all levels, from novice
riders up to Olympic hopefuls. "Since riders stay at
my home, near the horses, most people will find that they
can make a lot of progress in a week, said Best who
won numerous Grand Prix and championship titles when he
lived in the U.S. Away from their normal pressures,
people can immerse themselves in their riding in a more
relaxed way. Riders will learn riding "kiwi style."
New Zealand has the ideal climate and terrain for horses
and riders both. I definitely believe that New Zealand horses
are some of the best in the world and I invite everyone
to come and see for themselves."
The
program features five days of lessons and other activities
that will culminate with the chance for some to compete
in a local horse show with Best as coach and trainer. Wine
tastings at some of New Zealand's best local wineries and
an optional hot air balloon ride over the beautiful and
sparsely populated rolling hills of New Zealand's north
island will add to the Kiwi experience.

Glen Leddy has justified his selection as an international
rider at Zagreb, Croatia, this week.
The best of the Irish in today's (Sunday) Grand Prix
at the Croatian four-star event, Leddy travelled as
an individual rider, and so did not share in the glory
of Friday's second place by the rookie Irish team
in the Nations Cup competition. His third place in
the Zagreb Grand Prix on Michael Leddy's horse <Gold
Fingers> , however, established that the relatively
inexperienced Irish squad were firing on all cylinders.
Dave Quigley, riding <Ashdale's Futuro> came
fractions of a second behind Leddy to take fourth
today in the Grand Prix, while Nations Cup star Ryan
Crumley, from Derry, brought his horse <Baltimore>
into sixth.

The
Clydesdale Horse
The
primary purpose of this breed was literally as a farm
workhorse - true horse power prior to mechanisation.
From the early days the reputation of the horse grew
considerably and the horse fairs held over several days
in the Lanarkshire area attracted buyers from far and
wide looking for draught horses to fulfil a variety
of roles in the haulage field. In these mechanised days
the Clydesdale horse is taking on a variety of new roles

Hanley
Finishes Fifth In Lanaken Six Yr Old Class Final
MAYO'S
Cameron Hanley was best of the Irish in today's (Sunday)
6 yr-old Final at Lanaken, with a fifth place on <Coco>
a Paul Schockemohle bay gelding. Hanley managed a
clear in the first round but had a single mistake
in the second to earn him four faults.
Though
leading the field of 133 horses going into today's
Final at Lanaken, Cian O'Connor and the Irish-bred
mare <Echo Beach> were unfortunate enough to
lower two poles in the second round of the competition,
and had to make do with a tenth place.
O'Connor
was fastest of the 35-strong field in both rounds,
but the last two fences down in the second round cost
him dearly.
The
class was won by Holland's Mathijs Van Asten on <Cobra>.

Finding
The Right Riding Instructor
WAVERLY,
WV Finding the right instructor is essential if a rider
wants positive, satisfying, and safe equestrian experiences.
The "best" riding instructor may be a very
different person for different riders. It is an adult
student's responsibility to choose an instructor that
suits her current level of ability and her goals.
Choosing
a riding instructor is as personal a decision as choosing
your doctor.
The first step is clearly defining your objective.

A
"Systems" Look At Therapeutic Riding Center Operation
Here's
the scenario:
"I currently work for a not-for-profit therapeutic
riding center as a certified instructor and director. The
center is struggling badly, and the board is ineffective.
Lately they have been saying they are thinking about closing
the program down. They have not been able to pay me for
quite some time, although I continue to do lessons several
days a week. I have been working with a grant writer for
about six months, have submitted seven proposals for the
non-profit, and have been denied funding for all of them.
I own all the program horses and lease them to the non-profit.
I also own all the tack and equipment, and virtually run
the program myself doing the
fundraising, marketing, public speaking, etc. The support
they provide is really the use of the center's name and
accreditation.
