British
Horse Society Safety Symposium takes on the Big Issues:
Risks, Roads, Hats, Bodies and Blue Lights!
The
British Horse Society's Safety Department is holding
a Safety Symposium on Saturday 4 October looking at
the Big Issues: Risks, Roads, Hats, Bodies and Blue
Lights. The day-long event will take place at The Quality
Inn, Kenilworth, Warwickshire, starting at 10 o'clock. |
The
day is aimed at exploring the relationship between horses,
riding on the roads and other road users as well as protective
clothing and risk assessment. Topics will include emergency
vehicles and how horses react to them, cyclists' and drivers'
perceptions of horses on the road, risk assessment and riders'
responsibilities - particularly pertinent following the
Law Lords decision earlier this year (Mirvahedy v Henley)
- body protectors, riding hats and avoiding injury to riders'
teeth.

Age-Old
Equine Feeding Myth Dispelled
Researchers
of a unique new product, combining a specific mix of
ingredients that have a high inclusion of sugar beet
pulp, have finally dispelled an age-old equine myth
that soaking pulp is alwyays essential.
At
long last it has been scientifically proven that sugar
beet pulp can be included in a high horse diet without
the inconvenience of soaking.
Researchers
at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, following extensive
trials, have announced this major breakthrough in horse
feeding. |
These
trials, led by Dr. Meriel Moore-Colyer, who has a PhD in
equine nutrition, were commissioned earlier in the year
by Youngs Animal Feeds Ltd in readiness for the launch of
a brand new product into the equine market place
Dr.
Moore-Colyers findings which will be contained
in a detailed scientific report will make Youngs
Molichop Shreddi a uniquely formulated product when it is
launched this autumn.
It
will be the first time in the UK that a manufacturer has
developed a horse feed with a high inclusion of dry sugar
beet pulp in a special way that enables the horse to enjoy
the benefits without the risk of digestive upset. At the
same time backed up by scientific evidence on the bag.

PAC
2003 Site Ready To Welcome Endurance RidersThe
trails are cleared and marked, and organizers of the
Pan American Endurance Championship say everything is
ready for the international slate of riders now on their
way to Trout Lake, WA. for the September 13 ride.
PAC
organizer Stephanie Irving says that even with fire
prevention measures being strictly adhered to, workers
have managed to get everything ready for camp to open
on September 7. A forecast of rain for the weekend will
hopefully relieve the extremely dry conditions that
have plagued the entire Pacific Northwest this summer. |
Irving
says the PAC ride committee is excited that its six years
of work to prepare the site will be rewarded with some of
the best endurance riders in the world coming to the ride.
The 100-miles of trails, in the beautiful Gifford-Pinchot
National Forest, range in elevation from 2,000 to 3,800
feet.

The
Elite range of saddlery from Jeffries has stirred up a great
deal of excitement this year. And it will be on show at
the Your Horse British Equine Event at Stoneleigh Park on

at the event which is expected to attract more than 300
stands offering all things equestrian to the 2004 retail
village.
"One
of the most popular items in the range is the new girth,"
says Duncan Kent from Jeffries.
"Made
from top quality leather it looks stunning and is soft enough
to allow freedom of movement while retaining durability."
The
girth features a recessed D-ring to accommodate draw reins,
martingales and breastplates and comes with best quality
stainless steel roller buckles.

West
Grove, PASeptember 5, 2003 The Laurels at
Landhope Combined Driving Event kicked off without a
hitch on Friday with the first leg of the event, the
Dressage phase, at Landhope Farm in West Grove, PA.
This
world-class international equestrian competition features
the very best in the discipline including the current

of Ocala, FL. Weber, a member of the Silver Medal Winning
Team at the World Equestrian Games (WEG) in Jerez, Spain
in 2002, received a score of 43.20 penalties, which
places him slightly ahead of his WEG teammate, Tucker
Johnson, of Hobe Sound, FL who received a 50.56. Weber
is pleased with his top placing. |
It
means a lot, said Weber. I need to be on top
in Dressage because I have a history of not winning the

A
Race To The Finish With Charles Owen & Co
|
Charles
Owen & Co recently sponsored at NAPPA. The Northern
Area Point to Point Association Finals in Leesburg, Virginia,
America.
The
meeting is the final for a wide variety of race types, including
a Junior Horse Fieldmaster's Chase. This involves the 'jockeys'
aged approximately thirteen or fourteen years old, having
to follow a Fieldmaster over a course of jumps for about
two miles. They are not allowed to pass the Fieldmaster
at any time. But once the Field has jumped the last fence,
they race to the finish line about a quarter of a mile away.
The aim of the NAPPA races is to teach children the most
basic concepts of race riding and the importance of having
ridden a well judged enough race to still have 'fuel in
the tank' for a finish. The 2003 Junior Fieldmaster Chase
was aptly led by Chris Gracie who won the Maryland Hunt
Cup this year at the grand age of 16!
The
proceeds of the meeting are given to NAPPA and put towards
Educational Seminars across America. Youngsters are taught
how to Race Ride at Schooling Sessions by Professionals
on made horses at different tracks and barns. Chris Gracie
is obviously one who has benefitted from the scheme, being
the youngest ever victor of the Maryland Hunt Cup 2003.
Charles Owen believes that by investing in the education
of tomorrows riders throughout the disciplines they are
helping to safeguard the future of the sport.

Adam
Shereston visits Trallwm Farm Animal Sanctuary
It
was not only the horses that benefited from Adams
visit to Trallwm, as with all visits as much time
was spent with the people as with the horses. One
person at Trallwm had recently had an accident with
a tractor, causing him to have severe headaches these
abated almost as soon as Adam started working with
him. He was also a lot calmer and more relaxed after
being helped by Adam. The first evening Adam was there,
all the resident humans talked to Adam. |
There
was a lot of positive reaction to his presence and a lot
was gained by all in attendance. The first pony that Adam
saw was wispa, a very timid pony with no physical problems
but a lack of interaction with humans. Adam tried to gain
the ponies trust and waited for wispa to make the first
move in contact, which was achieved quite quickly. From
what Lesley later told Adam, she was quite surprised to
see the pony rolling and playing about in the stall. Wispa
had been there 6 months and nobody had ever seen her roll,
as she was always up against the wall watching nervously.
Since Adams visit wispa has been a different pony. Actually
understanding what people are about now. Lesley has said:
"It's like we're speaking the same language now"

'Through
the Grades' with The British Horse Society and Rob Hoekstra
Following
hot on the heels from the sell out success of the British
Horse Society Instructors' Convention with Jennie Loriston-Clarke
in March, comes the October Convention with international
show jumper Rob Hoekstra.
Entitled
'Through the Grades' the convention aims to look at
the art of show jumping at Foxhunter level. Ridden demonstrations
will take the spectator through each phase, step-by-step,
and will enable a greater understanding of how to apply
the knowledge after the day.
Aimed primarily at BHS Instructors, the convention is
also open to anyone looking to further their knowledge
in this area. |
Rob
has represented Great Britain on six occasions and was a
member of the winning Nations Cup team on 1989 in Drammen,
Norway. He has also won the Hickstead Derby on his great
horse, Lionel. As a popular competitor at top level, Rob
is looking forward to sharing his knowledge and wealth of
experience with the teachers of today.

Robinsons'
two-storey Superstore to open on November 2nd |
At
12 noon on Sunday 2nd November 2003, Robinsons' two-storey
Superstore will open in a blaze of publicity. It will have
taken just four hundred and nine days following the fire,
which devastated the old store, to design, approve, build
and finish a Superstore. The equestrian market in the UK
has never seen anything like this before. At two storeys
high, with 24,000 sq. ft of showroom space there will now
be an additional 80% more showroom space. There'll be more
leisurewear and equestrian products and another customer
favourite, the very popular Nose Bag Café returns,
this time with a more extensive menu and of course with
lots more space. There'll also be a huge function room that
will be used for some regular promotional events as well
as book signings, 'Group Visits' and special occasions.

Edwards MSc, BSc (Hons), BHSSM-Allen & Page Nutritionist
During
the winter your horse will probably have to spend a
large proportion of the day indoors. Turning him out
for a few hours each day is very important - he will
be able to get some exercise, relax, socialise with
other horses, and pick at any grass that is available.
Even if there is a good covering of grass it will be
of low nutritive value and additional forage will be
essential to help to satisfy his appetite, avoid boredom,
and maintain a healthy digestive system. Some horses
will start to put on weight on unrestricted forage and
it may be necessary to mix the hay ration with oat straw
to maintain the bulk of the fibre, but reduce the calorie
intake.
Hay
is the most commonly used forage in this country although
it contains a high degree of dust and spores. Soaking
it for 30 minutes will suppress the spores and it should
not be allowed to dry out before it is fed, or the spores
will still be breathed in and can damage the airways.
If soaked for longer than 30 minutes, valuable nutrients
can leach out and be washed away.

Dry
Conditions Bring Mandates For Pan Am Endurance Championship
Fire
Rangers in the West are concerned about the possibility
of fire in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest in
Trout Lake, WA, the site of the September 13, Pan
Am Endurance Championship, bringing about mandates
set by the organizing committee and fire management
officials.
|
The
terrain is extremely dry due to a severe drought and the
influx of riders and spectators for the Championship will
increase the fire hazard. There will be no smoking, generators
must have appropriate spark arrestors, no ATVs, trips in
and out of the competition area must be limited and vehicles
parked with teams or vendors must be considered stationary.
The PAC camp is closed to the public due to fire danger
until Sunday, September 7.

British
Horse Society announces Ragwort success story!
The
British Horse Society is delighted to announce a real
success story in its campaign to prevent horses dying
from ragwort poisoning. The Society has been contacted
by Rick Lewis, from Kirkham in Lancashire, who, as a
result of the BHS' Ragwort Action Week (July 21-27),
spoke to his local county council about clearing some
land occupied by horses that was full of ragwort. He
was particularly concerned as there was a foal in the
field. |
Rick
told the BHS, "On 28 July I contacted Nick Bower of
the Rural Estates section of Lancashire County Council's
Resources Directorate to raise the issue, referencing your
Ragwort Action Week web pages. They replied that they would
contact the tenant and within two weeks, before the ragwort
had seeded, the entire field had been cleared of the weed.
I was surprised at the prompt action and very pleased, especially
for the foal's sake.

The
Welsh Pony, Cob & Part Bred
The Welsh breeds are the most beautiful and aristocratic
of all the native ponies and their influence is so widespread
that it is not difficult to trace the presence
of Welsh blood in many animals successful in equestrian
events of all sorts throughout the world.
The Stud Book contains four sections:
The Welsh Mountain Pony (Section A)
The Welsh Pony (Section B)
The Welsh Pony of Cob Type (Section C)
The Welsh Cob (Section D)
There is also the Welsh Part Bred Register. |
Welsh
Mountain Ponies are believed to be descended from the Celtic
Pony and to have existed in the mountains of Wales for over
a thousand years, enduring great hardship and often persecution.
As a result of this hardship, these ponies have developed
a hardiness of constitution and an intelligence which has
made them one of the finest foundations for horse breeding
in the World. Today the Welsh Mountain Pony is acknowledged
to be the world's most beautiful pony.
