International
Rider and Trainer Betsy Steiner Identifies Secrets to
Her Success in New Book
Ringoes,
New Jersey It is a rare opportunity when an actively
competing international rider takes the time to identify
some of the secrets to her success. Betsy Steiner, member
of the 1990 World Equestrian Games American Dressage
Team and winner of CDI Grand Prix from coast to coast,
has done just that in her new book and on her web site. |
Betsys
book, A Gymnastic Riding System Using Mind, Body and Spirit:
Progressive Training for Rider and Horse, published by Trafalgar
Square Publishing, offers more than the traditional aspects
of ridingposition, movements and aids. Instead Betsy
reveals her unique and well-rounded approach that she has
used to train many horses and riders to the grand prix level.
For me dressage is about the development of mind,
body and spirit in both horse and rider, Betsy explains.
I wanted the book to explore practical aspects of
riding that have often been overlooked in other texts.

Saddlebag
Safaris Testimonial.
The
white rhino stood together in the bush like ancient,
primordial rocks; still and brooding. On the opposite
bank of a dry river bed, metres away 4 riders watched,
4 horses alert and aware appraised the situation second
by second. Suddenly, as one, 7 rhino wheeled and ran
in a dust cloud away from the watchers. Horses and riders
remained quiet, held by the magnificence and mindful
of the power of the rhino in its domain where man is
just a watcher. |
This
was just one of many magical sightings of game in a week
in Lapalala wilderness with Saddlebag Safaris. Throughout
our time in the reserve we were constantly rewarded with
herds of zebra, groups of white and black rhino, kudu, impala,
wildebeest as well as a richness of birdlife. We came upon
crocodile, were privileged to observe a hippo family group
and eavesdropped on the spectacular and colourful conversation
of baboons. Lapalala is caught in time, with its preserved
wildness, its grand rivers and expressive rock formations,
the history is literally etched on the land by passing water
and land changes as well bushman painting and later Iron
Age art. To put your hand where a bushman did it shamanic
trance is indescribably humbling as is the realisation that
the rocks which carry the hand prints are ever present and
each man is only passing through.

Official
- European Show Jumping Championships - Ireland Finish
Fifth, But Qualify For Athens
AFTER
the second round of the Nations Cup competition at Donaueschingen,
Germany, today (Friday) the Irish show jumping team
finished Fifth of 10 teams.
Importantly,
though, Ireland was ahead of both Gt. Britain and Italy,
the vital position needed to qualify for the 2004 Athens
Olympics. Switzerland staged a late rally in the second
round of the Nations Cup today, finishing Third, and
taking one of the two available spaces for Athens in
the team event. |
But
Ireland, though dropping to Fifth place overall in today's
European Championship team final, still finished ahead of
other teams vying for the second Athens slot, such as Gt.
Britain and Italy. Ireland's star was Kevin Babington, who
jumped a textbook double clear on the Irish-bred <Carling
King>, keeping the Irish a vital step ahead of the Italians.
Babington
now lies Fourth individually, ahead of Sunday's European
Individual Championships, with Cian O'Connor 17th and Robert
Splaine 20th. Only the Top 25 riders jump for the Individual
title.

Young
horse rider in first aid dash
If
a young girl falls off her horse and stops breathing
would you know what to do? Well that was the scenario
facing members of the national first aid, care and patient
transport charity, St. John Ambulance Sussex recently.
Horse
rider, Natasha Morris from Horsham was taking part in
a Senior Camp organised by the Crawley & Horsham
Pony Club when she suddenly fell, stopped breathing
and was treated by the voluntary organisation's first
aiders, Hilary Thompson and Steve Walker.
Natasha, 12, also suffered facial injuries in the incident
and was airlifted to the Princess Royal Hospital in
Haywards Heath and later transferred by Matthew Codling
and Daryl Peters of the St. John Ambulance Patient Transport
Service to the Royal Alexandra Hospital for Sick Children
in Brighton. She is now making a good recovery. |
Her
recovery can be attributed to the knowledge of emergency
first aid given by Steve and Hilary with club organisers
Sue Slade and Julian Langridge. They were later joined by
paramedics from Sussex Ambulance Service and worked as a
team.
N atasha's
mother, Denise, said: "I was so relieved when her breathing
was restored and she was put into the recovery position
to help keep her breathing going. I had taken a 4 day First
Aid and Work qualification myself and so felt reassured
that Steve and Hilary would revive her. I cannot stress
enough the importance of going on a short first aid course."

New
Horslyx Mobility Lick
Maintaining
suppleness and mobility in joints and associated soft
tissues (tendons, ligaments, cartilage) and limiting
arthritic and other degenerative changes, is the subject
of increasing research aiming not just to improve the
performances of competition horses, but also to benefit
the many older horses and ponies enjoying less demanding
lives with their owners.
Many
horse owners just assume that problems arise due to
'wear and tear', however there are two distinct forms
of arthritis, osteo (degenerative) and rheumatoid (inflammatory).
Osteo arthritis can result from injury or wear and tear,
rheumatoid arthritis perhaps following infection or
other illness when the immune system may have been compromised.
|
Many
joint care supplements available address just one of these
problems, but Horslyx is being launched in a new Horslyx
Mobility Lick formulation to help maintain healthy, supple
movement and also aid the support of joint function compromised
by both degenerative and inflammatory changes.
In
addition to the well-proven and trusted high-specification
Horslyx formulation, Horslyx Mobility Lick contains MSM,
Glucosamine and Omega Oils.

BREAKING
CLIPPER NEWS! from Peasridge
PEASRIDGE
is Europe's largest stockist of animal clippers, trimmers
and grooming products.
The
PEASRIDGE web site www.peasridge.co.uk is the world's
most informative site for animal clippers with special
consumer features such as CLIPPER STAR RATINGS and BUYER'S
GUIDE and is used world wide by consumer and manufacturer
alike what ever the breed!
THE
BREAKING NEWS OF THE DAY!
From
the USA - the clipper manufacturer Kim Laube launches
a new light duty "MINI" horse clipper known
as the "LAUBE 573 Mini Lasor Shear" (shown
left)
At just over 7 inches and weighing less than half a
kilo this light duty full body horse clipper is available
in two speed mains or vari-speed mode |
Also
from the USA - working in conjunction with the German company
HAUPTNER - manufacturers of the top selling HAUPTNER 2000
horse clipper - comes the exciting new " PREMIER 3000
DOMINANCE" a clipper designed for horse and cattle
clipping
PLUS! A NEW "STAR RATING" system (the first
ever!) has been introduced for all listed clippers, (which
includes virtually all the animal clippers, manufactured
world-wide.) The object of the "star rating" system
is to provide a reasonable "bench mark" and a
degree of confidence for those contemplating the purchase
of a new machine. PEASRIDGE
assess all current makes of clippers/trimmers on a criteria
which includes factors such as weight, length, handling
ability, blade range, value for money - against similar
machines, and design, engineering and reliability. Clippers
can achieve up to 100 points maximum. Machines not listed
are due to the manufacturer not supplying a current model
for trial and assessment. Please

de
Boiz Launch New Correct Contact Rein
A
Correct Contact Rein designed by Show Jumping Trainer
Ernest Dillon and developed and marketed by de Boiz
is seeing great success in the showjumping ring.
"A
serious fault with the developing show jumping rider
is to throw the contact away on the take-off stride
which is the precise moment the horse needs the support
of the contact", Says trainer Ernest Dillon.
"With
the Correct Contact Rein this is almost impossible. |
"I
have experimented with the reins for over a year with great
results from young children on strong ponies, right through
to serious adult riders competing over 1.50m courses. Without
exception every rider showed a marked improvement in a remarkably
short time."
Like
many successful ideas, the Correct Contact Rein is simple.
It is a "no gadget" way of putting across the
feel for the correct contact in the rein with the horse
going forward and "up" into the rein rather than
the rider pulling the horse about.

European
Championships - O'Connor Best Of Irish In Opening Battle
Of The Giants
WITH
THE all-important Nations Cup looming tomorrow (Friday),
the four riders who must defend Ireland's European Show
Jumping Championship title rode careful but determined
rounds on their top horses in the Speed Class at Donaueschingen
today (Thursday).
For
individual points gained today may count in the final
reckoning for Olympic qualification if the quartet fails
to shine sufficiently brightly in the team event tomorrow.
But as today's Speed Class horse will also be tomorrow's
Nations Cup horse, all riders were acutely aware of
the gamble in pushing their animals too hard in this
opening battle of the European giants |
.With
a staggering line-up of 77 of Europe's very best riders
and horses, it was Ireland's 23 year-old Cian O'Connor who
emerged as an early Top Ten contender, jumping halfway down
the running order on <Waterford Crystal> but clocking
up a fault-free round of 84.54 seconds that put him into
Fifth at the halfway stage.

Calmly
conditioned - health and shine without the excitement.
"Each
winter my 18-year-old Part-bred Arab went loopy and
it was difficult to keep his weight on. I tried all
sorts of feeds, but with no success, until I tried Calm
and Condition."
This
is a typical response from someone who has just started
using Allen and Page's Calm and Condition. For a horse
that is prone to 'heating up', finding a feed that really
boosts condition can be a headache - you need to provide
more energy (calories) but in a form that won't make
him excitable. Calm and Condition is specifically designed
to help your horse gain condition whilst avoiding the
'heating up' that often results from other conditioning
feeds.

Buckskins, Buckskins and More Buckskins
It
is summer time in Arizona and while for many people
that conjurs up images of 100 degree heat in the desert
of Phoenix, high in the hills at HorseBreakers Unlimited
it means the excitement of preparing all the buckskin
horses for the annual Buckskin Extravaganza and Production
Sale.
This
years sale was the 9th Annual and saw a crowd of over
1500 people from twenty states on hand to bid on a very
special and unique set of horses. Jon & Marywade
Gilbert opended HorseBreakers Unlimited in Dewey, Arizona
just outside of Prescott in 1987. In 1994 they held
their first Buckskin Extravaganza. Since their breeding
and sales business is centered around Buckskin and Dun
quarter horses an annual sale to highlight these horses
was a natural progression.

BETA
Show Voucher Support
IS
your Riding Club organising a show and looking for
support?
Help is on hand from BETA, The British Equestrian
Trade Association through its Retailer Support Scheme.
The scheme is aimed at providing assistance for Retail
Members to generate more business whilst also encouraging
the sport to work with their local suppliers.
Prize vouchers are provided for sponsorship of individual
classes for up to a total value of £25 per class
and can be redeemed in any BETA Retail Member shop.
|
The
total value of the prize for the class can be divided into
smaller denominations but it is up to the retailer awarding
the vouchers to decide on the break down of the value. BETA
Chief Executive and Secretary Claire Williams said: "We
have vouchers available which are ideal for extra prizes
at shows and events. Retailers are limited though on the
number of vouchers they can apply for so organisers are
advised to talk to their local retailers early in the season.

United
States Equestrian Teams Gold Medal Pan American Games
Team To Compete at 2003 Hampton Classic Horse Show
U.S. Team Also Includes Two Individual Medalists
Bridgehampton,
NYAugust 18, 2003All four riders who won the
team Gold Medal for the United States at the XIV Pan American
Games in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic will compete
at the 28th annual Hampton Classic Horse Show, August 24-31
in Bridgehampton, New York.
The
U.S. squad of Margie Goldstein Engle of Wellington, FL;
Lauren Hough, also of Wellington, FL; Chris Kappler of Pittstown,
NJ and Beezie Madden of Cazenovia, NY will be on hand throughout
the week, competing daily with an eye on the Classics
premier event, the $150,000 Prudential Financial Grand Prix
which culminates the Classic on Sunday, August 31. Engle,
who also won the Individual Bronze Medal at the Pan Am Games,
has won the Prudential Financial Grand Prix a record three
consecutive years.
The
U.S. win at Santo Domingo was particularly noteworthy in
that the United States entered the Games needing to finish
first or second in order to qualify for next years
Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. The U.S. successfully pulled
this off, clinching the Gold and adding two individual medals.
In addition to Engles individual Bronze, the U.S.
had another medal win by Kappler who turned in two fault-free
rides in the Nations Cup on his way to the Individual
Silver Medal.

Two Riders Battle For KL Grand Prix 2003 Title
Kuala
Lumpur, August 15, 2003 - The excitement is mounting
as the international equestrian community waits with
bated breath for the world's two top riders, Markus
Fuchs and Ludger Beerbaum, to meet in a clash of skills
and wills in the upcoming International Horse Show 2003,
to be held in the Putra Stadium from 2-5 October. |
Swiss
rider Markus Fuchs, the current World Number One Rider and
runner up Ludger Beerbaum have announced their intentions
to compete for the much coveted Kuala Lumpur Grand Prix
Title in October.
Fuchs,
47, for the second month this August, is the ruling world
champion since a spectacular defeat of German Ludger Beerbaum's
reign of two years since the Federation Equestre Internationale
(FEI) Gandini World Cup Jumping Riders Rankings began in
January 2001.
Whether
Fuchs will be riding with Tinka's Boy, his famed 13-year
old Dutch stallion, who helped him win the Grand Prix of
Ascona recently, remains a mystery.
The
KL Grand Prix will highlight showjumping, the most thrillingly
intense and challenging equestrian sport. Indoors it becomes
even more breathtaking. The action is inches away.

First
National Championship West of the Mississippi to be held
at the Colorado Horse Park
Parker,
CO The Colorado Horse Park at High Prairie Farms is
pleased to welcome the 2003 USA Equestrian National Combined
Driving Singles Championship August 22-24. For the first
time, this prestigious event is being held west of the Mississippi.
Drivers from around the country are expected to compete
for the National Championship title as well awards in a
selection of other divisions.
This
is a very big deal for the west in order to build the sport
out here, said course designer James ORourke,
of Unionville, Pennsylvania. Weve worked hard
to establish a track that is equivalent to any course they
have in the east. For the National Championship four
new hazards have been to the cross-country course. These
are similar to what we see in Europe, ORourke
said
Drivers
will find officials from the highest echelons of the sport
at the Colorado Horse Park. Enno Georg, who previously judged
the World Championships, is President of the Jury. Other
members of the Ground Jury include, Jack Pemberton, Jack
Lyndon, Mickie Bowen and William Long.

Equestrian Approves 2004 Competition Date Applications
The
2004 USA Equestrian Date renewal applications for
December 2003 through November 2004 competitions have
all been reviewed and the approval and/or permission
letters have been mailed to the competition contacts.
In addition, all applications for new competitions,
as well as changes of date, location and rating received
through July 31, 2003 have been reviewed at this time.
|
"The
Competitions Department staff has been working extremely
hard this year. Due to the fact that 2004 is a date rotation
year, there were many changes requested to competitions,
yet the staff has still managed to turn these date applications
around in record time, said Christine Ruddy, Director
of the Competitions Department.

The
American Cream, The "Cream" of Draft Horses
The
only breed of draft horse to originate from America
The
ideal American Cream is a medium cream color with white
mane and tail, pink skin and amber colored eyes. Some
white markings are also very desirable. Pink skin is
the determining factor in securing this rich cream color.
Past experience has proved that dark-skinned Creams
often do not have a satisfactory color. Further when
mated with our American Creams, they generally produce
too light or nearly white offspring. Therefore, our
chief and most sought for strain of American Creams
has always carried the pink skin trait. These vary but
little in color throughout the year and the white markings
contrast beautifully with their rich cream color. |
The
amber eyes are also an unusual and distinguishing trait
of the American Creams. The foals are born with nearly white
eyes. In a short time they begin to darken and by maturity
have turned to an amber color.
The American Cream draft horse may be classified as a medium-heavy
draft type. The ideal mature weight of females is 1600 pounds
and height of 15 - 16 hands. Ideal mature weight of stallions
is 1800-2000 pounds and height of 16-16.3 hands. We feel
this size most desirable. With their type and action, they
make good show horses and also are of a size that fits into
the average person's plans.
A
characteristic of these horses, which makes a lasting impression
on those who have handled them, is their good disposition.
The person who keeps a team wants one not only trustworthy,
but one in which they can take pride as well. They will,
therefore, be pleased to note the uniformity in color and
type of the American Creams, making for easily matched teams.

Jumping - Charles Wins Hickstead Derby For Third Consecutive
Year
IRISH
European team member Peter Charles pulled off one of
the greatest performances in show jumping this afternoon
(Sunday), when he won the famous Hickstead Derby on
<Corrada> for the third successive year.
Only
Eddie Macken and Michael Whitaker have ever bettered
this tally in the past, each with four wins, but Charles
is now the 21st century record-holder.
This was Peter's last Derby on the mare <Corrada>,
as the horse is being sold, but before the competition
began, he said: < I'm only worried about one fence.
The rest she can jump in her sleep.> The one <fence>
was the notorious Derby bank, which has 3' 5" rails
at the top, and then an almost vertical slide down 10'
6" of grass bank before tackling a 5' 3" fence
just one stride from the bottom.

Jumping - Kerrygold Grand Prix League - Moloney Snatches
Millstreet
IN
ONE OF THE surprise results that so enliven the Kerrygold
Grand Prix League, 21 yr old Richie Moloney from Kilkenny
walked away with the top prize in today's much-anticipated
Millstreet fixture.
Previously
anguishing near the very bottom of the league table,
with just 4 points, Moloney said after his win: <
I was heartened to see it was a good strong track when
I arrived. My horse needs big fences, and this course
was almost built for his talents. But I'm still over
the moon at winning.> |
The
track was indeed strong enough to stop all but three of
the 44 starters going through to the second round, and Moloney
found himself battling it out with 21 yr old Louise Walsh
and veteran international rider Marion Hughes. But Appolonaire's
liking for the big fences told in the end, with a gap of
over four seconds opening up between first and second, while
Hughes was dogged by time faults, lowered one pole, and
racked up an unfortunate seven penalties in her second-round
total.
