Samsung
Super League News : Plus Ca Change!
Despite
all the predictions that the home side would come
out on top, it was the longtime Samsung Super League
leaders from France who reigned supreme to claim the
Aga Khan trophy for the second year running at Dublin
Horse Show today.
Irish
Chef dEquipe, Tommy Wade, was not happy with
the performance of his team which finished equal third
with Holland behind Britain in runner-up spot and
was brutal in his criticism afterwards "the
horses were good enough but the riders werent,
they threw it away" he said.
Wade
is a difficult man to please even when things are
going well, but yesterday that "luck" which
he says always plays such a big role in the end result
just did not go Irelands way. The French however
did not need any luck at all. They were, once more,
just too good for the rest of them.
They
already held the lead at the halfway stage after clear
rounds from Florian Angot (First de Launay), Christian
Hermon (Ephebe For Ever) and Michel Hecart (Quilano
de Kalvarie) but they were not alone as the Dutch,
at last beginning to show the kind of form usually
expected of them, matched their zero total.

HorseWorld
Launches New Video Presented by Tony Head
HorseWorld's
Visitor Centre will launch its new video, presented by local
actor Tony Head, on Thursday 14th August 2003.
The
new video will be shown every 15 minutes in HorseWorld's
Audio Visual Theatre, and highlights the equine welfare
work of the charity. The Visitor Centre provides a great
day out for the whole family, but the video carries a serious
message about the cost and implications of owning horses.
Chris
Kemp, Visitor Centre Manager said, "We wanted to provide
a video for our visitors which showed the welfare work of
the charity. Horses are relatively inexpensive to buy, but
very expensive to look after - especially if they become
ill. We want visitors to really consider all the options
before they buy a horse. Hopefully our video will help to
raise awareness of equine welfare issues at the same time
as entertaining visitors. Tony Head is a great presenter,
and we're delighted that he agreed to help us". Please

Jumping - Ireland Joint Third In Aga Khan Trophy
THE
SUN never really broke through the afternoon heat
mist in the main arena at the RDS Dublin today (Friday),
and Irish hopes of a victory in the Aga Khan Trophy
also failed to brighten when the first three riders
posted four faults apiece, Billy Twomey adding a time
fault to his penalties, and anchorman Kevin Babington
incurred an uncharacteristic eight faults.
Ireland
entered the sixth leg of the Samsung Super League
series as firm favourites, running just half a point
behind leaders France, but as each Irish rider clipped
a single fence in the first round, the sense of disappointment
from the capacity crowd became almost palpable.
At
the halfway mark Ireland were lying joint Fifth with
Sweden, while France and the Netherlands shared pole
position on zero faults apiece.

Coveted
British Horse Society Horsemastership Trophy goes to
French groom
Raphael
Chateaulan, groom to top International showjumping rider
Michel Robert of France, won this year's British Horse
Society Horsemastership Trophy at the Royal International
Horse Show, held at Hickstead (23-27 July). The coveted
award, highly prized among the showjumping grooms at
the show, is presented to the groom who, in the judges'
opinion, has done most to ensure the highest welfare
and turnout standards for their charges. |
The
BHS Horsemastership Trophy has been part of the Royal International
Horse Show since it became the Society's flagship event
over 50 years ago. Spot checks take place throughout the
show taking into account the general fitness and condition
of the horses, turnout, which includes grooming, saddlery
and equipment, and the turnout and general manner of the
groom. Horses are seen in their stables and when they are
competing to give an overall view. Attention to detail can
win or lose the trophy and this year, with the typical English
summer weather conditions turning the showground into a
sea of mud, this aspect was more important than ever.

Olympia
Show Jumping Entry Changes
Changes
to the FEIs World Cup Jumping Rules mean that the
National Show Jumping entries for this years Olympia
International Show Jumping Championships (18th-22nd December)
will be through the Ranking List only for the top 10 riders.
In
the past the organisers have been able to take, in addition
to the top 10 on the BSJA rankings list, the three highest
placed British riders at a special October fixture known
as The Olympia Qualifier and latterly run at Addington.
Qualifiers from this show, who would not otherwise have
been seen at the main event at Olympia in recent years,
have included the likes of Liz Edgar, Keith Shore, Ellen
Whitaker and Nick Skelton.
Olympia
Director, Simon Brooks-Ward said: At Olympia we can
play host to a total of 38 riders due to space for the stables,
lorries and time for the classes. The new rules have upped
the number of foreign competitors we have to have from 21
to 28 leaving us with 10 British riders to host.

Dublin
Horse Show - Irish Dominate Speed Classes
TEMPERATURES
rose even higher at a sunbaked RDS today (Thursday)
but the heat did not seem to affect the speed of Irish
riders, who ran riot in the two big classes at Dublin.
In
front of near-capacity crowds, tomorrow's Aga Khan
team-mates Billy Twomey and Cian O'Connor produced
two classic rounds to take the No. I spots in the
Power and Speed and Speed Derby competitions, respectively.
But
the Power and Speed also saw Irish riders take Second,
Third, Fourth and Fifth slots, while in the Speed
Derby only France's Michel Hecart and Italy's Roberto
Arioldi managed to elbow their way into the top six
places.
Co.
Armagh's Harry Marshall led the Power and Speed class
on <Splendido> from early in the day, but Cork's
Billy Twomey, riding <Anastasia> and sixth last
to jump, delivered a poised, textbook, round that
shaved just under a second off Marshall's time, to
clinch the class.
|
Kildare's
Cian O'Connor had his position as show jumping's current
golden boy confirmed by shrieks from the crowd as he entered
the arena for the Speed Derby, and then earned a standing
ovation as he took the nine year-old bay mare <ABC Landliebe>
around the Derby course at a pace so fast that no-one came
even close to closing the gap. Please

United
States in Second Place Halfway Through Team Dressage
at Pan American Games
Santo
Domingo, DRAugust 6, 2003At the conclusion
of the first day of the Prix St. George Dressage Team
competition on Wednesday, it looks like a North American
battle for Gold between the United States and Canada
at the 2003 Pan American Games in Santo Domingo, Dominican
Republic.
The
United States Equestrian Team received a credible
score of 131.600, but the combined results of Kristina
Harrison-Naness of Burbank, CA, riding Kantor and
Carol Lavell on Much Ado, were not good enough for
the top spot. Canadas Ashley Holzer with Gambol,
and Evi Strasser aboard Quantum Tyme, gave their team
the leading score of 134.150. Mexico currently stands
third with a combined score of 122.350.
|
Individually,
the U.S. also needs to make up some ground in order to capture
the Gold Medal. Lavell, of Loxahatchee, FL, stands in second
place with a score of 66.800%. Holzer leads with a score
of 67.650% and Strasser is third with a score of 66.500%.

Event Launch Causes Unprecedented Demand For Space
During
the past few weeks, UK organisers Gateway Events have
released details on the launch of Equestriantype -
an exhibition focusing on Equestrian Transport, Yard
and Paddock Equipment.
Equestriantype,
which incorporates a specialist exhibition and equine
master classes from world-renowned experts, will take
place between the 2nd and 4th April 2004 at the National
Agricultural Centre, Stoneleigh, Warwickshire. Jonathan
Robinson of Gateway Events, who has been organising
exhibitions and other events across a wide range of
industries for ten years, and who is one of the UK's
most experienced event promoters, commented, 'We are
really excited about Equestriantype. In all the years
I have worked within the events industry I have never
experienced such a strong demand for exhibition space.
Several exhibitors have commented that they have been
waiting for an event like this for years. There are
plenty of events that are no more than glorified shopping
opportunities, selling tack and clothing, Equestriantype
is an event where people can find out about the essentials
of keeping horses safely in the paddock, yard and
during transit.' |
Equestriantype
will be taking over two halls at the National Agricultural
Centre for the event. Hall 1 will contain a huge variety
of exhibitors displaying products and services that are
absolutely essential to the horse owner, whether they are
professionals or leisure riders. An arena will be installed
in Hall 2, with tiered seating to accommodate the visitors
who will be able to view demonstrations, lessons and advisory
talks that will be led by industry experts.

South
Essex Insurance Brokers/PSOA Trailblazers
Faruk's
Championship Win Proves He's Alive and Well!
More
than 1,400 riders fight for national titles
For
Tallulah Hall, the 2003 Trailblazers championships will
long be a day to remember. The day her horse came back from
the dead!
Last
year her 12-years-old Arabian, Faruk, developed strangles,
but after a six month battle, veterinary surgeons were admitting
defeat and suggesting the horse be put down. As a desperate
last measure, three hairs were taken from Faruk, sent off
to the operators of a radionics and crystal "black
box" and five weeks later the strangles was beaten.
Tallulah,
17, from Gillingham, Dorset, spent another six months getting
him fit again, and then celebrated at the Trailblazers final
by winning the dressage senior Elementary championship.
More
than 1,900 riders had qualified for the South Essex Insurance
Brokers Trailblazers final, which is organised and run by
the Permanent Show Organisers Association at 43 of its member
centres around the country. About 1,400 eventually made
the journey to the National Agricultural Centre, Stoneleigh.

Pippa's
$250,000 Decision
Britain's
leading three day event rider Pippa Funnell is facing
one of the most difficult decisions of her very successful
career, which could result in a $250,000 payout and
a place in the history books.
Following
her victories at Kentucky and Badminton earlier this
year, she will pick up a bonus of $250,000 if she can
win the Burghley Masterfoods Horse Trials in September
and become the first rider ever to complete the Rolex
Grand Slam of Eventing. |
Funnell
has to decide whether to run her most experienced horse
and dual Badminton winner Supreme Rock at Burghley to increase
her chance of collecting the bonus, or save him for the
European Championships at Punchestown two weeks later, where
she will be bidding to win her third consecutive European
title and help the British team to defend the gold medal
they won in Pau in 2001.
Funnell
has the choice of three other horses for Burghley and Punchestown
but running Supreme Rock at Burghley rather than the European
Championships would deny him the chance to become the first
horse to win three consecutive European titles

Tellington
Touch as seen on ITV Talking to Animals |
Using
the Tellington TTouch method I address issues and behaviours
with problematic and distressed dogs. Typical issues addressed
are: fear of loud noises, pulling on the lead, chewing,
barking, temperament, relief of tension & stress, socialisation,
arthritis, helping concentration, seizures, timidity, shock,
introducing pets to the home, fearfulness & aggression
- to name but a few.
The
Tellington TTouch or TTouch is an holistic teaching method
for any animal, offering positive solutions to common behavioural
and health related problems. Unlike more traditional training
methods that enforce and dominate, I use communication and
kindness to bring about new responses, which is why it literally
works with ANY animal. If you love your dog why would you
want to enforce anything upon them? Dont you both
deserve a method that respects the individual, be it the
human or the animal, working to reinforce and bond the relationship
more?

The
Inaugural SCOPE Auction
The star of Ireland's inaugural SCOPE auction of showjumping,
dressage, and eventing prospects was the last lot of
the day, Ulysses M2S.
After
a round of spirited bidding that included two-time Olympic
gold-medal-winner Gillian Rolton accepting telephone
bids from the United States, the final bid of euro67,000
was placed ringside by the famous Irish horse marketer
Paul Larkin of Larkin Brothers International Ltd. The
bid was not sufficient for the breeder/owner to part
with this magnificent prospect for sport and breeding,
and Ulysses M2S left the ring unsold. |
Soon
after, Morningside Stud's Thomas Reed, the breeder and owner
of Ulysses M2S, accepted an offer of euro67,500 from Irish
rider Denis Flannelly, bidding on behalf of his American
client, with the understanding that Ulysses M2S will be
campaigned in sport for Ireland and be presented for stallion
approval this fall on the continent.

National
Foal Auction Prinsjesdag, the power of performance!
On
the third Tuesday in September, the sixteenth, for the eleventh
time the National Foal Auction Prinsjesdag will take place.
The sixty-five foals selected for their pedigree, movement
and conformation, were recorded on video and photographed
for the presentation DVD and catalogue last weekend. The
auction, known for the high quality of its foals, this year
offers possibly an even more interesting selection of bloodlines.
In
the last decades, sport and breeding have become more and
more entwined. What is more, breeding without information
from the sport is unthinkable. For this reason the selection
committee has chosen foals for their proven 'performance'
lineage; not by making concessions in movement and conformation
but by deliberately seeking out the best European 'performance'
blood. Former NVP foal and Pavo Cup winner Hilltop Rousseau,
this year the 'face' of the auction, typifies the way forward.
The motto of the National Foal Auction Prinsjesdag , 'The
power of performance!', under- lines the background of the
selected foals. As mentioned above, the auction takes place
on Tuesday 16 September. Last year, the organisation moved
from Middenbeemster to the Federation centre in Ermelo where
the auction will take place this year too. The presentation
of the foals is at 11.30 and at 14.00 the first foal will
come under the hammer of auctioneer Hans Sinnige.

Jumping - Kerrygold Grand Prix League - Smith Takes
Dun Laoghaire

HUGE crowd turned out in brilliant Bank Holiday weather
to see Steven Smith take the 3,000 Euro top prize
at today's (Monday) Dun Laoghaire Horse Show Grand
Prix, riding Robert Hancock's <Laraghlease Western

it was the other places that gave keen watchers of
the Kerrygold League table something to talk about.
Harry
Marshall, whose No. 1 spot in the League could have
been usurped at Dun Laoghaire, substituted his proven
Grand Prix winner <Splendido> for <Romance>,
and only an unfortunate refusal in the second round
stopped him making a bid for victory, but his Fourth
earned sufficient Super League points to maintain
his league leadership by a comfortable margin.

Record
Exhibitors At Horse of the Year Show 2003
Horse
of the Year Show returns to the NEC Arena, Birmingham from
Wednesday 17th to Sunday 21st September 2003. Last year's
move to the NEC was an overwhelming success attracting record
crowds of over 55,000.
This
annual equestrian spectacular brings with it a Tradestand
Pavilion which this year will allow for a record 180 stands
selling a variety of wares. Each of these will benefit from
the public spend in the area which, following last year's
customer survey, is calculated to be well in excess of £1,500,000
for the 5 days.
Following
a review of the 2002 show, the organisers, Grandstand Media
Ltd, have reconfigured the Tradestand Pavilion to expand
aisle widths and allow for improved flow due to greater
public attendance, whilst also increasing stand availability
to meet demand from new and existing exhibitors.
"We
were delighted at the success of last year's show. When
we took on the event in 1997 we were playing to half empty
houses with only about 110 stands in the Pavilion. Now,
due to sell out performances and a huge year-on-year return
rate of existing exhibitors, we are struggling to meet demand
for both public admission tickets and tradestand space.
Having
entered a new era, this year's Horse of the Year Show (HOYS)
is certain to build on the triumph of 2002 and promises
to be bigger and better than ever before. The response to
our change in venue from all branches of the equestrian
industry has, without exception, been extremely positive"
stated Mark Wein, a Director of Grandstand Media Ltd.
