The

of this year's trials, Director, Sarah Phillips said she
was delighted to have had the application for three stars
accepted by British Eventing and the FEI. She said, "This
is a real step up the ladder for us. It is where every event
wants to be and it is just reward for the team at Blair
for all their hard work in putting together a professional,
well-organised event."Blair Castle was the first three
day event in Scotland, now it will be the first three star,
three day event."
Mike
Keiller, Chief Executive of Morrison Bowmore Distillers
said, "We are delighted as sponsors to support the

Red
Tape Threat To Traditional Rural Events Removed - NFU
The
organisers of rural events like village fêtes and
farmers' markets are breathing a sigh of relief today, thanks
to the NFU.
It had been feared that the Government would in future insist
that organisers of occasional events like gymkhanas or food
fairs would have to get planning permission following a
consultation on the issue by the DTLR*. Today, however,
the Deputy Prime Minster's Office issued a statement saying
that there will be NO change to the temporary use provision
in current planning legislation.
In
it, Planning Minister Jeff Rooker said that the ability
to hold infrequent recreational and fund-raising events
was of "significant value to rural communities and
in particular to farmers".

Meeting of the Central European National Federations
In Bratislava The annual meeting of the Central European
NFs was held early August 2002 in Bratislava. The Central
European NFs decided to hold a yearly meeting as of 1989,
mainly to discuss World Cup matters. In addition to the
discussion on the newly created Central European Driving
Challenge, the meeting mainly concentrated on the World
Cup Jumping.
Central European Driving Challenge A pilot project
to promote International Driving competitions outside of
Western Europe will start in 2003: the Central European
Driving Challenge. In view of the considerable costs of
transporting horses and carriages to international events
it was felt to be more beneficial to concentrate on supporting
increased regional activities. In Central Europe, the countries
interested in Driving are invited to organise international
events and to send their drivers to events outside of their
country. The FEI's development department will contribute
to the travel costs and possibly also give some support
to Organising Committees.
Calendar Changes 2003 World Pairs Driving Championship
At the request of the French Equestrian Federation, the
FEI authorised the change of date and location of the 2003

Horses
Resist Infection With Actimune
A
new product has been launched in the UK to help horses
cope with stressful situations, such as training,
traveling or weaning, and give them added protection
against viral and bacterial infection when they are
most vulnerable.
Actimune is a unique feed supplement that has been
developed to maintain a healthy immune system. Modern
stabling, feeding and training methods, as well as
traveling, competing, weaning and similar stressful
situations, often leave horses susceptible to any
illness going. Coughs and colds are, at least, debilitating,
and at worst can result in damage to the lungs that
will end the career of a performance or competition
horse.
|
When
dealing with young stock, many breeders are now starting
with a regime that includes Actimune to ensure maximum resistance
to viruses at an early stage. The Cheveley Park Stud, Newmarket,
is an advocate of starting young. A spokesman said "We
have fed Actimune to a selected number of our foals and
yearlings over the past 12 months and early indications
are that Actimune does boost their immune system, giving
these individuals a noticeably better defense against virus
attack". The stresses and strains of training and traveling
can be detrimental to the immune system of performance horses
throughout their careers. Dr Chris Gilbert, a top equine
vet in the USA, was the first to put Actimune to the test
and continues to recommend it for horses of all ages. He
says "Quite honestly, I've found very few horses that
don't respond to Actimune. My clients are extremely happy
with the consistent performance they see, and there's a
marked reduction in the amount of illness we see in these
horses".

"Sunday
Silence" Author Comments on News of Horse's Death.
LEXINGTON,
KY (Monday, August 19) -- Ray Paulick, author of the biography
"Sunday Silence," expressed his sadness regarding
the news report of the death of the legendary 1989 Kentucky
Derby and Preakness winner who passed away in Japan early
Monday at the age of sixteen. "Sunday Silence"
was published earlier this year by Eclipse Press as part
of the "Thoroughbred Legends" series of books.
Paulick,
a frequent visitor to Japan who had seen Sunday Silence
at Shadai Stallion Station on numerous occasions, reflected
on the horse, saying, "Sunday Silence was an international
superstar. American racing fans remember his exciting duels
with Easy Goer in the 1989 Triple Crown races and Breeders'
Cup when he always seemed to be the underdog. Japanese fans
never saw him race but recognize him as the most prolific
sire in their history.

Equitector
Riding boots goes West.
For
the first time, the Equitector was showing their range
of riding boots at the King of Prussia show in the
USA.(Aug. 10-12)
The
show was a great success, says Nico Katan, the managing
director, but we need many stores for distribution
of our products into the US and Canada. We receive
so many emails from riders who wish to purchase our
boots within the America's and we do not know where
to place them.
Our unique range of riding boots resolves many problems
for rider and yard staff alike. The new Chill Buster
and Master with Climate control keep your feet cool
in summer but warm in winter and the Easy Rider Balance
System give you that unique and more secure feel whilst
in the saddle.

Ambella
Connecting with others on a deep meaningful level
is a rarity in our hurried world. When it does happen,
it is truly a gift that needs to be recognized and
acted upon. Sometimes we aren't quite ready or even
aware of such connections and it's gone before we
realize what has been lost. In the late summer of
1988 I had such a connection with one of the most
beautiful young ladies I've ever known. I long to
reconnect with Ambella.
I took a job that summer at Indian Creek Ranch near
the one horse town of Cameron, Montana. The ranch
was owned by some very well-to-do polo people who
had homes throughout the world and hobnobbed with
the most famous polo player of all, Prince Charles.
In the polo world, the thoroughbreds have a career
that usually ends in their mid-teens when they lose
their speed or break down physically. From there they
often become brood mares as they did at Indian Creek
Ranch. With two famous stallions to service the mares,
a new crop of foals arrived every year to welcome
the warm springtime weather and green grass. As the
sun just started to light the sky on the morning of
the equinox, March 21st, a very special foal was taking
her first breaths on that cool beginning. She was
the color of aged hay, a buckskin with a prominent
dark stripe running down the middle of her back. With
a black mane and tail and dark lower legs, she wasn't
common like all the bays that dominate the polo scene.
She marched to the beat of her own drum, right from
day one.

Build
Leadership Through Board Development
Consider this scenario: You're on the executive committee
of your local horse association (group a). You receive a
request in the mail to represent your group on their executive
council from another horse association (group b). You receive
it on December 30, and the application has a January 9 deadline.
The request asks you to name one representative and an alternate
to their executive council, both who must be members in
good standing of their association. This is the first time
your association has been contacted about this. There is
no other explanation of: who else sits on the executive
council; how often the executive council meets; the representatives
expected duties; and time commitment. Also missing from
this request is a phone number for a contact person from
group b. All you have is the return address for the person
to send the request back to. You're left with many questions,
and it will take a lot of time for you to track down a contact.
Many horse associations miss out on getting the leadership
on their board that they are after. The example above demonstrates
a poorly implemented board development plan. Other associations
struggle along wanting more involvement, but not knowing
what kind of additional assistance they need. If any of
this sounds like your horse association, you can greatly
improve your situation by putting together a Board Development
packet.
