and International Show Jumper Support Slaughter Horse
Awareness Ride
Roger
Helmer MEP for the East Midlands, and Tim Stockdale,
international show jumper, of Roade, Northants are
both turning out in support of an awareness raising
Ride as it journeys through Derbyshire, Leicestershire
and into Northants on its way to Westminster.
The ILPH (International League for the Protection
of Horses) staff and their horses will be continuing
their journey from Scotland south when they leave
from the Swan Inn, Milton, Derbyshire on Saturday
17th August.

Everybody
who is concerned about the long distance transport of live
horses across Europe for slaughter, whether a rider or not,
is invited to show their support by joining the Ride or
attending at the start on one of the days that it is in
their local area.

Bowmore Blair Castle International Horse Trials and
Country Fair

Blair
Castle, the seat of the Dukes of Atholl, is set in wonderful
parklands in the heart of Perthshire providing a stunning
backdrop to this major equestrian event and Country Fair.
The Event first ran as a Three Day Event in 1989 and since
then it has grown in popularity both with competitors and
spectators. In 1996 Bowmore Blair Castle International Horse
Trials hosted the European Junior Championships. This achievement

Top
Riders Compete In 17th Annual Millbrook Horse Trials
Millbrook Horse Trials To Be Held August 23-25, 2002

Millbrook,
NY - Top riders from around the country will compete in
the 17th annual Millbrook Horse Trials. Reorganized last
year as a benefit for the Dutchess Land Conservancy, this
years's competition will feature the United States Eventing
Association's (USEA) prestigious 2002 National Championship
for the Intermediate Division, as well as the USEA Region
1 Preliminary Championships
The
Millbrook Horse Trails boasts newly redesigned cross-country
courses created by nationally renowned course designer Tremaine
Cooper. This course, which debuted last year, drew accolades
from upper level competitors, including Buck Davidson, Louise
Meryman, and Darrah Alexander. This led to the selection
of this event as this year's championship site. The upper
level Horse Trials, held from August 23-25, will offer Advanced,
Intermediate and Preliminary divisions.
More
than 500 competitors are expected to compete in the three
disciplines that define the horse trials: Dressage, Stadium
Jumping, and Cross Country Jumping. The events which are
free to spectators, provide a chance to spend a weekend
in the picturesque countryside of Dutchess County, one of
oldest and most distinguished equestrian communities in
the United States.

Win Aga Khan, Ireland Third
FOR
THE first time in 45 years, the French show jumping team
won the Aga Khan Trophy at the Kerrygold Horse Show, Dublin,
with a clutch of double clear rounds giving them a two-round
total of just four faults today (Friday). Italy were second
on 16 faults, while Ireland finished third on 20 faults.
Despite a copybook first round clear by 22 yr old Kildare
rider Cian O'Connor on <Waterford Crystal>, Ireland
failed to manage another clear round in the competition.
However, the points picked up at Dublin today mean that
Ireland now qualifies for the Samsung Nations Cup Final
at Donauschingen, Germany, in two weeks' time. Please

Equine Health Studies Program Holds Second Annual Stallion
Auction
BATON
ROUGE–The Equine Health Studies Program (EHSP) in the
LSU School of Veterinary Medicine will launch its second
annual Internet Stallion Service Auction in October to generate
funds for expansion of the Equine Intensive Care Unit.
The first multiple-breed stallion auction raised more than
$37,000 for the new unit, and the EHSP hopes to continue
that success with an improved auction this year. "The
Stallion Service Auction offers mare owners the opportunity
to select top quality stallions for breeding with potentially
discounted fees," said Dr. Rustin Moore, director of
the EHSP.Stallions
from across the United States, representing multiple breeds
and use, will be featured in the auction. Stallion owners
that donate stallion services will be recognized as participants
in the auction and their contributions are tax deductible.
Bidding
on the stallions opens October 1 and closes November 15
at 12 p.m. All stallion services offered in the auction
are intended for the 2003 breeding season and individuals
may bid on any number of stallion services. Bids will be
placed on the Internet with the highest bid always being
current, and bids made over regular stud fees are tax deductible
for the mare owners.

Zone 2 Takes Show Jumping Team Gold Medal at the North
American Young Riders’ Championships Presented
by State LineTack
Old
Mill Creek, IL – August 9, 2002 –The show
jumping riders from US Zone 2 snagged the Team Gold
Medal with a faultless performance in a tiebreaking
jump-off in one of the most exciting competitions
in the history of the North American Young Riders’
Championships (NAYRC), presented by State Line Tack,
on Friday at Tempel Farms in Old Mill Creek, IL.

An
unprecedented jump-off for the gold medal caught the riders
of Ontario and Zone 2 by surprise as no one expected a tie
following the two round Nations’ Cup format. The jump-off
became necessary when each team totaled 25 faults. The four
riders of the Gold Medal Team in order of appearance were
Kristy McCormack and Marga; Vanessa Stevenson and Galiana;
Michelle Pia and Mable and Georgina Bloomberg and Riviera.
Bloomberg was the anchor in the pressure cooker situation,
but seemed to take it all in stride.
“There
was a lot of pressure,” said Bloomberg. “It’s
also a compliment because it means someone believes in you
enough to come through. It makes you determined to do well.
We all worked very hard to win.”

Region 2 Captures Dressage Team Gold Medal at the
North American Young Riders’ Championships,
Presented by State Line Tack
Old
Mill Creek, IL – August 9, 2002 – The
local riders of Region 2 won the Dressage Team Gold
Medal today at the 2002 North American Young Riders’
Championships (NAYRC), presented by State Line Tack,
held at Tempel Farms in Old Mill Creek, IL. This
is the first time Region 2 has taken top honors
at the NAYRC since 1990.

The
Gold Medal Team consisted of: Lindsey Holcomb of Batavia,
IL, riding Chevriot, Lindsey Koffler of Lexington, KY on
Alfredo, Martin Kuhn of New Berlin, IL aboard Romulos and
Jacqueline Paxton of Batavia, OH and Sangmelima. The Region
2 team won convincingly with a total score of 3809. Paxton
helped the team accomplish their goal with an outstanding
score of 1367 and 70.103% and was thrilled with her personal
best.
“This
was the most fun I ever had in a test,” said Paxton.
“I worked so hard to get here and have a good test.
The fact that it happened at Young Riders makes it ten times
better.”

Is the Name of the Game At the Vermont Summer Festival Horse
Show

Dorset, VT—August 8, 2002— Meghan Moran of Malvern,
PA, proved speed was no object as she won the $3,000 Open
Speed competition at the Vermont Summer Celebration, part
of the 2002 Vermont Summer Festival held at Harold Beebe
Farm in East Dorset, VT.
Moran
and Z-Max pushed speed to the maximum, clocking in at 65.38
seconds to claim victory. Moran also placed fourth riding
Mr. Happy.
Last
week’s winner of the $3,000 Open Speed, Tracy Bartko
of Hughesville, MD, was the runner-up this time around with

Four
Additional Cases of Potomac Horse Fever Confirmed at Lexington,
Ky Veterinary Hospitals

LEXINGTON, KY--- Four additional cases of Potomac horse
fever (PHF) have been confirmed at two veterinary hospitals
in Lexington, Ky. According to Nathan Slovis, DVM, Dipl.
ACVIM, of Hagyard-Davidson-McGee (HDM) Veterinary Hospital,
two of the horses at HDM are recovering, and one was euthanized.
Tests are pending on four other horses at HDM, with their
symptoms resembling those found in the clinic's three confirmed
cases. One additional case was seen at Rood and Riddle Equine
Hospital.
Bill
Bernard, DVM, Dipl. ACVIM, of Rood and Riddle, reported
the additional case of PHF diagnosed at that clinic, although
the outcome of that case is unknown. Potomac horse fever
is normally detected in only one or two horses per year
in Kentucky.
Commonly
recognized PHF symptoms include diarrhea, depression, colic,
anorexia, dehydration, and signs suggestive of laminitis
or founder. However, the cases at Hagyard-Davidson-McGee
have not exhibited the characteristic diarrhea. The horses
had low white blood cell (WBC) counts, a little heat in
their feet, and were depressed. Please

Young Riders Festival, Hagen a.T.W. (Ger)

30 July to 5 August, Hagen was dedicated to the
youth and hosted three FEI European Championships
for Juniors and Pony riders as well as the FEI/PSI
World Challenge Finals 2001, without mentioning
national classes.
About
35'000 spectators on Saturday and on Sunday went
to encourage and applaud riders participating in
the FEI European Junior Jumping Championship, European
Dressage Pony Championship, FEI European Eventing
Pony Championship, as well as the finalists of the
FEI World Jumping Challenge, World Dressage Challenge
and Children Dressage Competition.

Samsung
Nations Cup ; Battle for the Final
Four
teams are in a battle to qualify for the Samsung Nations
Cup Final, which will take place from 22 to 25 August in
Donaueschingen (GER).
The
total number of teams in the Final will be eight (including
the home team). The top six teams qualify for the final,
plus two wild cards (1 for the home team, one for an overseas
team). As the home team, Germany, is leading the standings
with a comfortable 63 points, no wild card will be needed
to qualify them. Consequently, the best 7 teams of the standings
will go to the Final, plus one wild card for the best overseas
team (USA).

Gandini World Jumping Riders Rankings
No
changes in the Top Ten. Ludger Beerbaum still leads the
rankings with 3547 points, ahead of Rodrigo Pessoa (BRA)

Team (USET) has announced the team that will compete
at CSIO Spruce Meadows, September 4-8, in Calgary,
Canada. The USET named four riders to the team as
well as two alternates.

six selection trials held in California in July to
choose the team that will compete at the World Equestrian
Games in Jerez, Spain in September.

success for second Arabian Horse Show
The
second International Arabian Horse Show, Merrist Wood 20th-21st
July 2002, the only European Conference of Arab Horse Organisations
(ECAHO) ‘B’ show in the UK, was an outstanding
success. Hosted by leading London-based corporate financier
Amjed Al-Jaffery, the show is now firmly established as
an international highlight in the Arab horse show calendar.
The
prime location and first class facilities at Merrist Wood
provided easy access for both national and international
competitors, while the total of £21,000 in prize money
provided a generous incentive. All classes were well filled
with high numbers of top quality competitors.
Entries
were received from as far a field as Argentina, Australia,
Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands, while a prestigious
list of international judges included HRH Teresa de Bourbon
of Spain, Isabella Pawelec-Zawadska President of the Arab
Horse Society of Poland, Willi Poth from Germany and Ferdinand

Olympians
Battle for Victory in $2,500 Open Jumper Competition At
Vermont Summer Festival Horse Show
East
Dorset, VT—August 7, 2002— It was the battle of
the Olympians on opening day of the Vermont Summer Celebration,
part of the 2002 Vermont Summer Festival held at Harold
Beebe Farm in East Dorset, VT.
Peter
Leone, a silver medalist at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, and
Lisa Jacquin, a member of the Silver Medal team at the 1988
Seoul Olympics, dueled for the win in the $2,500 Open Jumper
competition with Leon coming out on top.
Leone
of Greenwich, CT, rode one of four horses to advance to
the jump-off over the course designed by Jerry Dougherty.
Leone, the first rider back into the ring, posted a time
of 33.33 seconds aboard the 12-year-old bay mare, Bella
Louisa, that could not be beat.
Jacquin
of Wayne, PA, had two chances to beat Leone, but a time
of 33.89 seconds riding the nine-year-old thoroughbred-cross
gelding, Fabrege, was not quick enough. In addition to second
position, Jacquin also took fourth after having a rail down
with La Bonita.
Squeezing
between Jacquin for third position was Ireland’s Cian
McDermott and Falcone II who had a clear round in a time
of 34.15 seconds in the jump-off. McDermott, who is based
in New Hope, PA, also finished fifth riding D’Accord.

Equestrian Announces Results Of Green Hunter Pony
Championship
Lauren
Hogan, a ten year old from Tampa, Florida, rode her
own small pony, Miss Australia, to win the 2002 Wild
Horsefeathers/USA National Green Hunter Pony Championship
held August 6, 2002. The championship was held as
part of the USA Pony Finals being held August 6-9,
2002, at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Kentucky.
As Champion, Lauren received a Beval saddle, donated
by Berk Lee and The Tack Box of Middleburg, Virginia.

Exhibitors
went head-to-head in competition competing in an over fences
class, a model class and an under saddle class, competing
against riders from across the nation to vie for top honors.
Competitors qualified to compete in this event by winning
a Champion or Reserve Champion at an "A" or "AA"
rated USA Equestrian competition between Dec. 1, 2001 and
July 1, 2002. This competition was made possible through
the generous donations of Wild Horsefeathers and Robin Greenwood/Tinker
Hill Ponies.

North American Young Riders’
Championships, Presented by State Line Tack, Competition

Mill Creek, IL – August 8, 2002 – The
2002 North American Young Riders’ Championships
(NAYRC), Presented by State Line Tack, officially
began on Wednesday with dressage and show jumping
action at Tempel Farms in Old Mill Creek, IL. Nearly
200 of the nation’s finest young riders and
horses arrived on the scene to compete in this world-class
competition featuring show jumping, dressage, and
eventing.

At
the end of the first half of the Dressage Team Championship,
Alison End of South Freeport, ME led the way riding her
Danish Warmblood May Star, with a score of 63.949%. Leahe
Webb of Temecula, CA placed second on Hugo, owned by Kathleen
Webb, with a score of 63.795% and third went to Courtney
Raiser of Liburn, GA and Pegaus, owned by Lori Bell, scoring
63.231%. The remaining dressage riders compete for the Team
Championship on Thursday at 8:00 am. The
other two disciplines get underway on Thursday with Show
Jumping beginning at 9:00 a.m. and Eventing Dressage at
1:00 p.m.

Official- The Race to the 2003 Budweiser Show Jumping World
Cup Final Has Begun for Riders Around the World
Las
Vegas, NV—August 8, 2002— The race to Las Vegas
has started! Some of the world’s best show jumpers
have already begun vying for the right to represent their
countries at the Budweiser Show Jumping World Cup Final
to be held at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas, NV,
April 16-20, 2003. The
qualifying season for the 25th Annual Show Jumping World
Cup is well underway in Canada and competition is getting
fierce in the Canadian League as the final Canadian World
Cup Qualifier draws nearer. Currently, Victoria, British
Columbia-native, Karen Cudmore and Conejo occupy the top
position in the standings with 54 points. Kudmore’s
win in the $60,000 Quebec City Air Canada Jazz World Cup
Qualifier, held June 30, gave her the initial lead in the
series. After that win Kudmore went on to win the $60,000
Blainville, Quebec World Cup Qualifier, July 7.

‘AI
Club’ formed to protect new profession
The proposed Veterinary Surgery (Artificial Insemination
of Mares) Order, which is expected to come into force in
autumn 2002, will make it legal for ‘lay people’
to carry out equine Artificial Insemination, but only once
they have successfully completed an approved training course.
The move will ensure that the welfare of the horse is protected
and that mares have the greatest possible likelihood of
conception through AI. It has led to the launch of a new
professional body to govern standards of practice within
the industry and to give horse owners peace of mind.
In
the same way that you expect your farrier to fulfil strict
professional criteria, The AI Equine Trade Association has
been set up to support and monitor the interests of the
growing number of individuals passing the new, DEFRA approved
AI of Equines Technicians training courses.

Fredericson Brothers Launch Hickstead Assault
Sweden's
Fredericson brothers are out to make their mark on this
year's British Jumping Derby Meeting at the All England
Jumping Course, Hickstead (August 22-25). Jens will be defending
last year's Hasseroeder Speed Derby win and younger brother,
Peder, runner up in the Mitsubishi Eventing Grand Prix at
the Golden Jubilee Royal International Horse Show, will
be a serious challenge to 2001 British Jumping Derby winner,
Peter Charles.
A
win by Fredericson junior will not only give him the £20,000
purse and put Sweden in the Hickstead Derby record book

Participates In World Breeding Championship Dressage
For Young Horses
|
The
U.S. had 3 participants competing at the FEI World Breeding
Championship Dressage for Young Horses in Verden, Germany
which took place August 1-4, 2002. Tennessee based, Jane
Cleveland was the highest placed US rider finishing in 10th
place in the final standings of the 5-year-old class on
her gray Trakehner gelding Kavalier (Amatcho - Kandice).
This was the first time Cleveland competed in an FEI competition
in Europe. "It was a fabulous experience and the competition
was particularly tough said Cleveland. I learned where the
judges want the horses to be at a certain age. Breeding
and riding are a bigger part of their culture here so of
course they are further along than we are but we just have
to keep at it".

Appeal to Derbyshire Horse Lovers to Join Charity
Ride
ILPH (International League for the Protection of Horses)
staff and their horses will be continuing their journey
from Scotland to Westminster on the ILPH Transportation
Awareness Ride, accompanied along the way by local
riders supporting their cause.
The Ride will start Week 3 at 10am on Monday 12th
August at Chelmorton (nr Buxton). Riders are asked
to be ready by 9.30 a.m for a possible photocall.

Rider Ruth Friend Delighted With New BMW Horsepower
International
event rider Ruth Friend has been in cracking form
this season, claiming a number of high profile wins
and placings with her string of horses, which she
trains and competes from a base near Carlisle in Cumbria,

Nile Virus ALERT
West
Nile virus is a mosquito-borne disease that causes inflammation
or swelling of the brain and spinal cord. Since its discovery
in New York in 1999, the incidence of equine West Nile virus
has more than doubled. Once horses show clinical signs of
illness, the disease is fatal nearly 40% of the time.
Signs
of West Nile Virus: These symptoms can be confused with
rabies, EPM ("Possum Disease), equine encephalitis,
and other serious neurological diseases. If you see these
signs in your horse, see your veterinarian immediately.

to host Australian Final Selection Trial

The
crème de la crème of international event riders
– including a squad of shortlisted hopefuls for the
top-performing Australian event team - will be descending
on Highclere Castle (near Newbury, Berks) to compete in
the Advanced Intermediate section on the Monday at The International
Horse Trials & Festival of The Horse (25/26 August).
The Australian riders will have all to play for as they
compete for a place on their national team for The World
Equestrian Games in Jerez, Spain (11-22 September 2002).
They include: Andrew Hoy, Matt Ryan, Bill Levett and Lucinda
and Clayton Fredericks who will be joined by Phillip Dutton
(flying in from the USA) and other competitors arriving
from Down Under on 17 August.

David Green who will be playing host to the Australian riders
at his Marlborough base: “I have competed for many
years at Highclere and recommended it as the final selection
trial because of the testing and innovative course and the
varied terrain which should give them a good blow out and

Australia

Vaulters Prepared For Challenges In Spain
August
5, 2002 - The Vaulting Committee of USA Equestrian
named the vaulting contingent to represent the United
States at the World Equestrian Games (WEG) in Jerez,
Spain in September. Kenny Geisler, Devon Maitozo and
Erik Martonovich are to compete in the Men's Division.
The Women are Pam Geisler, Jill Main and Samantha
Smith. The F.A.C.E. Vaulters of Moorpark, CA will
compete in the Team classes.

Chef
d'Equipe, Emma Drinker, will join the group and act as advocate
for the equestrian vaulters at WEG. "This is an experienced
and talented group of athletes. They are well prepared for
the challenges that will face them in Jerez," said
Drinker. American Vaulters have earned medals at all three
previous World Equestrian Games. Vaulters and coaches are
making final preparations for the competition, and feel
that medals are again within the grasp of this strong field
of contenders.

Mario
Deslauries Claims Second Grand Prix Win In The Catskills
Canadian
Olympic veteran Mario Deslauriers riding his own Big
Sir won the $75,000 Hudson Valley Resort Grand Prix
on Sunday, as the fifth of the HITS series of horse
shows concluded at Kelly Farm in Ellenville, New York.
This marked the second big win of the series for Mario,
who won two weeks ago with another mount, Everest.

The
starting field of twenty-four horse and rider combinations
included several veterans of Olympic and international competition,
including Kevin Babington, Laura Chapot and Nona Garson,
all from New Jersey. The course included fifteen jumping
efforts, with one double and one triple combination. Nine
of the twenty-four produced clear rounds and proceeded to
the timed jump-off. The first horse in the jump-off was
Kinetic, from the Sagamore Farm and ridden by Darren Graziano.
They showed the way and set the pace with a clear round
in the very good time of 36.599 seconds, which gave the
rest of the riders something to shoot for. Earlier in the
show, Darren and Kinetic won the Thursday, $25,000 Grand
Prix where they produced the only clean round.

Swail
Breaks 100 In Points Race For League Prize
Despite
not making it through to the jump-off at Dun Laoghaire Grand
Prix today (Monday August 5), Conor Swail nevertheless took
Fifth Place, and pushed his points total in the Kerrygold
Grand Prix League through the magic 100 barrier to 102.
The Dun Laoghaire Grand Prix was won by Francis Connors
on <Cruiseway>, which took him to Second in the League,
with a current score of 69 points.
The Dun Laoghaire Grand Prix is traditionally the final
preparation for the Kerrygold Horse Show, Dublin, where
many of today's riders will appear next week.

Community Loses Another Legend
Victor
Hugo-Vidal, 68, of San Juan Capistrano, California,
passed away in the early morning on Saturday, August
3, 2002. He was the 1951 Champion of the AHSA Hunter
Seat Equitation Medal Finals and Reserve Champion
of the ASPCA Maclay Equitation Finals. In 1971 he
was named as the AHSA Horseman of the Year, in 1991
the California Professional Horseman's Association
Horseman of the Year and in 1996 was awarded the Walter
B. Devereux Trophy for the AHSA Sportsmanship Award.

Torano Tops $35,000 Vermont Grand Prix, Presented by Bruce

Dorset, VT—August 4, 2002— Jimmy Torano celebrated
victory with a win in the $35,000 Vermont Grand Prix, Presented
by Bruce Chovnick LLC, at the Manchester and the Mountains
Horse Show, part of the 2002 Vermont Summer Festival held
at Harold Beebe Farm in East Dorset, VT.
Torano,
who has just returned east after competing the United States
Equestrian Team’s Selection Trials for the World Equestrian
Games in California, did not show any signs of jet lag as
he set a blistering pace of 40.93 seconds in the eight-horse
jump-off. Torano, who also won a Grand Prix at the Vermont
Summer Festival in 2001, appeared very smooth and fluid
and he tackled the course set by 1976 Olympian, Buddy Brown,
but his pace was deceivingly quick. “This
horse has a really big stride, so he can leave a stride
out a lot easier than most,” said Torano of Ft. Lauderdale,
FL, in praise of Aguila, a 10-year-old bay Dutch Warmblood
gelding by Libero. Torano collected a winner’s check
of $10,500 for the day’s work.

UPDATE: Fusarium mycotoxins and horses.
Mould
infestation of grain and forage plants usually begins pre-harvest.
This is greatly influenced by weather conditions and is
difficult to control. Mould growth can be compounded by
improper storage postharvest, and can alter the nutritional
status of horse feed.
This
study looked at the impact of Fusarium moulds on feed consumption.
Fusarium moulds are commonly found in temperate climates
like Ontario, and mycotoxins produced by these moulds have
a very high economic impact as grain contaminants. The Fusarium
mycotoxins are associated with decreased feed consumption,
gastrointestinal disorders and immunosuppression in other
livestock species. The horse industry is questioning the
effect Fusarium may be having on their horses' performance
or breeding ability and, in particular, the dangers that
may be inherent with the chronic consumption of low levels
of these mycotoxins.
In
response to these concerns, this study was conducted to
measure the effect of feeding naturally contaminated grains
on feed intake and blood responses in the horse, and to
measure the efficacy of a natural nutritional supplement
in preventing the intestinal absorption of feed-borne mycotoxins.

In

What's 35 feet long and stretches from New Zealand, to England,
to Prince Edward Island and California? Answer: The only
horse trailer in the world to platform load then transport
all six equine passengers facing away from the direction
of travel. Inspired by experience, Mr Jim O'Brien, CEO of
O'Brien Animal Transportation Services, Inc. (OATS) worked
with equine behavioral and automotive dynamics concepts
to design his new trailer.
Performance horsemen know that transport is the most stressful
event that their animals endure. O'Brien, who customises
transport for elephants, ostrich and Komodo Dragons, has
an interest in engineering out trip stress. Scotland's Edinburgh
mounted unit were known to transport their horses rear face.
Their saddled horses are out of the trailer fast to face
rioters or crowds. The European Union's Scientific Committee
on Animal Health and Animal Welfare also endorsed rear face
transport. Horsemen with whom O'Brien talked knew it was
best for horses, but there were no trailers. Now there is.
Built in Arkansas, the double-axle steel gooseneck had its
inspiration in a two-horse rear face Kiwi trailer built
first in New Zealand, then England. One of these trailers
is now in Prince Edward Island, Canada.
"Outside of Australia and New Zealand, there were no
all rear-facing trailers," says O'Brien. "I talked
to some big name trailer dealers, but they emphasised people
amenities. Some might tack on a couple of 45 degree forward
facing slant stalls, but they weren't interested in trying
platform loading and rear face. Sharon Cregier sent photos
and drawings about the concept. Four years after meeting
her at an Animal Transportation Association conference,
I decided to design a trailer for commercial use to benefit
the horses."

News Update
Condios (Coriano x Landgraf I), the 7-year-old Holsteiner
stallion owned by Morningside Stud, has been approved as
a sire by the Australian Warmblood Horse Association (AWHA)
and the New Zealand Warmblood Horse Breeders Association.
The AWHA is a full member of the World Breeding Federation
for Sport Horses. Condios (Coriano x Landgraf I) is now
approved by seven studbooks in six countries.
The
Showjumping Association of Ireland (SJAI) reports that,
as of 2 August 2002, Condios has 305 SJAI points. With 201
points required for Grade A status, Condios is one of the
youngest Irish-owned horses ever to reach Grade A in Ireland
and the youngest to achieve Grade A International status
in two countries (Ireland and Denmark).

Hazel's
Horse Wins Again At Celbridge
The
horse of the late Hazel O'Callaghan, the show jumper who
died on July 3 after injuries sustained in a fall, today
(Sunday) won its second Grand Prix of the season, at Celbridge,
South County Dublin, with the only clear round in the jump-off.

once more by 25 yr old Paul O'Shea from Co. Limerick , the

Hickstead
Reports Increase In Weekday Gates
Attendance
over the five days of the Golden Jubilee Royal International
Horse Show at the All England Jumping Course, Hickstead,
was 44,318, slightly down on 2001. "We put the decrease
down to the very hot weather," said Hickstead director
Edward Bunn. "There is covered seating, but never enough
for everyone and I don't think people go out, even to Hickstead,
to get burnt in extreme conditions."
Best
attendance was on Thursday for the Samsung Nations Cup and
Friday for the Mitsubishi Eventing Grand Prix. "This
is very much in line with trends over the last few years,
when weekday crowds are definitely getting bigger,"
said Mr Bunn.

Governor
Pataki Signs Bill- Closes Loophole in Horse Transport Law!
Albany,
NY - On July 23, 2002 Governor Pataki signed into law Act
191 closing a "loophole" in New York's Horse Transport
Law that often allowed illegal horse haulers to escape prosecution.
It states that every vehicle used to transport more than
six horses shall have no more than one tier, further strengthening
NY’s landmark law against shipping horses in cruel
and inhumane double deck trailers originally passed in 1981.
The horses shipped in these cruel trailers are often destined
for slaughter in Canada for human consumption overseas.
Due to a “loophole” in the law there have been
several instances when the haulers were able to escape arrest,
have the charges dismissed or entered a plea agreement involving
fines substantially lower than the law allowed. With the
passage of Act 191 this will no longer be the case.
