BHS
in Industry concern over Riding School insurance premiums
The
British Horse Society (BHS), ABRS and representatives
of the insurance industry met Defra minister Alun
Michael today (15 July) to discuss the increasing
burden of insurance premiums falling on equestrian
establishments.
|
BHS
Chief Executive Graham Cory told the minister that, in an
industry operating on such tight margins, premium hikes
can mean the difference between solvency and failure. And
if riding schools continue to decline in number then eventually
this will deprive the UK of top-level competitors.

Feeding
Older Horses
Have
you got an older horse or pony that needs some extra
care when autumn and winter come along? Then pick up
some handy feeding tips from Hickstead Horse Feeds nutritionist
Christine Smy from the article below.
Many
elderly horses do well during the summer months, particularly
when there is plenty of 'Dr Green' to eat, with older
horses with loose or missing teeth managing to chew
and digest the young grass shoots relatively easily.
Grass is an excellent source of digestible fibre, and
the general 'walking about' exercise in the field will
keep arthritis at bay.
But,
later in the summer, problems may start to appear. Once
the grass has flowered and seeded, it becomes tough
and lignified, and the digestibility and nutritional
value lowers on a daily basis. Please

Make
Sure It's A Good Summer For Your Dog This Year - National
Microchipping Month - August 2004
Following
the success of last year's National Microchipping Month,
the Kennel Club will be co-ordinating the second National
Microchipping Month in August. The campaign will be
run throughout the United Kingdom to encourage and promote
responsible pet ownership through microchipping as the
preferred method of permanent identification. |
Back
in the pet calendar due to popular demand, this important
campaign hopes to ensure customers are aware of the importance
of microchipping their pets so should their pet go missing
over the long hot summer days reunification is an option
when the pet is found. It is also an ideal time to highlight
the importance to customers of keeping their details up
to date on the national database and this campaign will
be highlighting the possible problems that could occur if
a lost pet is found and its owner cannot be traced. Please

Olympic
rider reveals the secrets of his success
How
an evening with former Olympic dressage team member
Emile Faurie at Sheepgate Equestrian proved an inspiration
for local riders . . .
Emile
Faurie, one of Britain's leading international grand
prix riders and former double Olympic team member,
provided a rare insight into his successful training
techniques at a well attended lecture/demonstration
at Sheepgate Equestrian last week.
During
the evening, Emile, who rode three of his top horses
currently based at his yard in Gloucestershire, explained
the importance of consistent correct dressage training
and demonstrated techniques to encourage horses to
work to the best of their abilities.
"I
like to try and keep things logical," he said.
"My aim is to explain things in simple terms
to the horse because he's the one who has to understand
what I'm asking for and feel confident that he can

Incidents Highlight Farmers' Responsibilities
Two
events this week have led to the CLA issuing a reminder
to farmers and horse owners of their legal responsibility
to make sure that their animals do not escape onto a
public highway. |
In
Yorkshire a farmer was held liable for the injuries to a
motorcyclist who was injured in a collision with one of
his cattle that had escaped from a field after someone had
left open a gate. Lord Justice Potter ruled that the farmer
was under a duty "to guard against the carelessness
or malice of those who may leave the gate open" and
found in favour of the motorcyclist despite the farmer's
appeal. Please

Gallops To Grand Prix Win As Woodside Summer Circuit
Concludes
Woodside, California. Sharn Wordley loves the shows
at Woodside. Not only did he make a clean sweep of
the major jumper classes, he finished one-two-three
in the $20,000 Golden Gate Grand Prix (July 10, 2004).
Five horses were clean over Jamie Alders course;
Wordley rode three of them. He was first to go in
the jump off on Cody and the grey gelding blazed around
the course in a time of 34.554, but they dropped the
rail at the final oxer. Hes a clean jumping
horse, said Wordley, but he got just a
little flat on that long gallop and had it behind.

Minister stated: "There is no obligation on landowners
to incur any expenditure in respect of the Countryside and
Rights of Way Act 2000. He goes on to state that the responsibility
for infrastructure such signage, footbridges and gates is
