Kaiser de la Cour Claims Six-Year-Old Division in the Canadian Young Horse Jumper Development Series Barrie, Ontario – Kaiser de la Cour reigned supreme as the winner of the Six-Year-Old Division in the 2004 Canadian Young Horse Jumper Development Series held July 2 at the Cornerstone Farms II Horse Show in Barrie, ON. The 2003 National Champion in the Five-Year-Old division, Kaiser de la Cour topped a field of his peers to win the prestigious Six-Year-Old title for owner Mill Creek Stables of Cambridge, ON. As the last of eight horses to return for the jump-off, Kaiser de la Cour, a striking selle francais stallion by the Narcos II son, Verdi, had four faults in the fastest time of 35.45 seconds over the tough test set by course designer Hector Loyola of Puerto Rico.

“Hector set a track that challenged the young horses to rise to the occasion,” noted Mill Creek Stables owner Phil Henning. “I didn’t think that we would be able to catch John Pearce’s time, but Kaiser was very quick in the jump-off and we claimed the win.”

After three events, Kaiser de la Cour currently tops the standings in the Six-Year-Old Division.

Sydney Olympian John Pearce of Stouffville, ON, had also incurred four faults in the jump-off in a time of 35.60 seconds. Riding Archie Bunker, an Oldenburg by the Holsteiner sire, Contender, Pearce finished as runner-up in his first appearance in the Canadian Young Horse Jumper Development Series this year.

Tyler Reeve guided Calle to third position for owner Grande Farms of Orangeville, ON, after also having four faults in the jump-off in a slower time of 37.04 seconds. Bred in Germany by Jens Meyer, Calle is a registered Oldenburg by the Hannoverian sire, Cashman.

The winner of the last Six-Year-Old class held in Palgrave, ON, Ruben, finished in fourth position this time out. Ridden by 25-year-old Hyde Moffat of Brantford, ON, Ruben is a Dutch Warmblood gelding by Concorde and is owned by Scanmar Portfolios. P-Spice, a Canadian Warmblood mare by Voltaire who has grown up in the Young Horse Development Series, rounded out the top five under Liz Gayford for owners Jens and Natalie Hansen.

A total of 30 entries contested the Five-Year-Old Division where Déjà Vu 3E emerged as the eventual winner, followed in close second by his KingRidge stable mate, Distant Star.

In addition to having winning qualities, both horses have a lot in common. They are both Canadian Sport Horses that are by KingRidge Stable’s own stallion, Class Action, a 10-year-old Dutch Warmblood by Liberio H that is currently shown in the grand prix division by Hugh Graham. And, both horses were ridden by Roberto Teran of Colombia.

John Pearce took third place riding O’Reilly, an Oldenburg by Lady’s King, while Hyde Moffat again finished fourth, this time aboard the recently-imported Belgian Warmblood gelding by Darco, World Cup van het Lindehof, for owners Mark Hayes and Hawkestone Farm. Another Belgian Warmblood, the breeding stallion Double Diamond by Nabab de Reve out of a Chin Chin mare, took fifth under Hugh Graham for owner KingRidge Stables.

Concorde’s Tiantha came out on top of the 16-horse starting field in the Four-Year-Old Division. Hyde Moffat, riding the Dutch Warmblood mare for the first time, guided Concorde’s Tiantha to victory for owner Sentinel Hill Farm.

Resident rider Simon McCarthy took the next two spots in the standings for Mill Creek Stables. Riding Millesime du Valy, a selle francais stallion by Verdi and a half-brother to Kaiser de la Cour, McCarthy finished second and, with Sancho, the Mill Creek Stables-bred Oldenburg stallion by Skorpio, also took third position.

After winning the first two competitions of the season, the W. Charlot Farms entry of Pour Patrice W was relegated to fourth position. Shown by North American Young Riders’ Championship Individual Gold Medallist Erynn Ballard of Hornby, ON, the Hannoverian stallion was bred at W. Charlot Farms in Stratford, ON, and is by its licensed Westphalian stallion, Pour Gange, and out of the Rio Grande mare, Riona.

Rounding out the top five was Encore, a Canadian Sport Horse gelding ridden by Graham, bred by Epstein Equestrian Enterprises and owned by KingRidge Stables. Encore is by Class Action while the grand prix show jumper, Alley Cat, a Dutch Warmblood mare by Emilion, is his dam.

In the Four and Five-Year-Old Divisions, the horses are judged solely on their performance and style. In the Six-Year-Old Division, the top eight horses return for a jump-off, carrying forward any faults accumulated in the first round. Points in the overall Canadian Young Horse Jumper Development Series are tabulated according to the International Equestrian Federation (FEI) World Cup system with the number of points given being based on the number of horses entered in each class.

The purpose of the Canadian Young Horse Jumper Development Series is to encourage the development of young show jumping talent and to give Canadian breeders additional incentives to breed superior show jumping prospects. Competing on a level playing field, the horses are divided according to age and jump at a level suited to their development as four, five or six-year-olds. This careful development allows the young horses to gain valuable experience and advance to the higher levels of show jumping competition with confidence. The Canadian Young Horse Jumper Development Series also gives prospective buyers for the hunter and jumper markets an opportunity to view a large group of prospects in a competition setting.

The next event in the Canadian Young Horse Jumper Development Series will take place on Friday, July 16, during the Capital Classic Show Jumping Tournament in Ottawa, ON. The 2004 Series is comprised of nine events, including the Ontario Championships scheduled for the Tournament of Champions in September where $10,000 in prize money is offered and the National Championships for Five and Six-Year-Olds hosted by Toronto’s famed Royal Horse Show in November. In addition to the $20,000 in prize money offered, two saddles have been generously donated for the winning entries at the National Championships - Cavalier will award an Amerigo saddle while Running Fox has given a Luc Childeric saddle.
