Class Stunts Headline At Horse Of The Year Show
This
year's Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) which returns to the
NEC Arena Birmingham from Wednesday 17th to Sunday 21st
September promises to be one of the most dramatic ever as
organisers Grandstand Media Limited today announced details
of the headline display for the 2003 show. Long established
as the pre-eminent event for unique displays and family
entertainment, Horse of the Year Show's tradition of innovative
ideas will continue this year with a bespoke headline display
featuring amazing trick riding and unique stunts.
The
headline display, which is billed as a 'HOYS Epic' is the
moving story of Equitis Virtus (The Brave Horseman), sponsored
by Zinc Management. Set in the days of the Roman Empire,
this action-packed feature presentation tells the story
of a peasant farmer who is enslaved and trained to be a
gladiator. Amazing stunt riding enters a new era in this
specially choreographed display, performed in full Roman
costume and boasting some of the country's leading professional
stuntmen from both film and television who have been brought
together for this unique performance.

Ireland
finish 4th in Nations Cup in Sweden
The
loss of Trevor Coyle possibly deprived Ireland of
another international success in the Samsung Nations
Cup at Falsterbo Sweden today, with the Irish having
to settle for fourth place behind Sweden, USA and
the Netherlands. Chef d'Equipe Gerry Mullins said
afterwards that he believed Ireland could have won
the competition had Coyle, who would have ridden Fleur,
not been forced to withdraw due to a hand injury.
Lying just a time penalty point off the lead after
the first round, the Irish challenge continued with
Clement McMahon steering Gelvin Clover clear for a
second time, while Lt. Shane Carey on Killossory and
Peter Charles with Carnavelly followed with just one
down and a penalty point each. However, a stunning
three second-round clears in a row by the Swedish
team wrapped up the competition to the delight of
the home crowd. Please

New
state legislation provides funds for LSU School of Veterinary
Medicines Equine Health Studies Program
BATON
ROUGE The Equine Health Studies Program (EHSP) at
the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine (SVM) will receive
funds from tax revenue generated from slot machines placed
in racetracks throughout the state, part of a bill recently
passed in the Louisiana Legislature.
The
$750,000 of annually-recurring funding approved will have
a dramatic effect on the EHSP by helping to enhance and
sustain the research, educational and service mission of
our program, and it will move us that much closer to reaching
our goal of becoming one of the premier equine biomedical
centers in the nation, said Michael G. Groves, dean
of the School of Veterinary Medicine
The
bill (House Bill #88) was authored by veterinarian and State
Rep. Dr. Michael G. Mike Strain, R-Covington,
co-authored by several other legislators and endorsed by
a broad-based group of constituents in the equine industry
and in the veterinary profession.

British
children's author inspired by Afghan boy
An
amazing trek to freedom made by a little Afghan boy
and his baby donkey is now the subject of a new children's
book by a top selling British author. Fayim's
Incredible Journey is a true story about seven-year-old
Fayim Kalim, who fled the troubles in his homeland with
his family and eight month-old donkey, called Baby.
The book tells how Fayim trekked for fourteen days from
north of Kabul, through the Khyber Pass - one of the
most dangerous roads on earth - to the safety of a Pakistan
refugee camp. The trek, also made by thousands of other
refugees in the aftermath of September 2001, exacted
a terrible toll on people and their animals. |
Author
Tessa Krailing was inspired to write the book after learning
how the Brooke Hospital for Animals, a British animal welfare
charity, stepped in to help Fayim and his donkey. Brooke
mobile veterinary clinics gave free treatment and food rations
to the working horses and donkeys of refugees arriving at
the Peshawar refugee camp
The
Brooke's Head of International Development Dr Bill Swann
met courageous Fayim. "In many cases these animals
represent the only remaining wealth of refugee families,"
Bill said at the time. "Baby the donkey may be small
now but before too long it may be the family's only means
of transport and income." Tessa,
the author of twenty books, is donating her fee and royalties
from this book to the Brooke.

Local
equestrian centre steps in to save disappointed children
British
Horse Society (BHS) approved Glen Tanar Equestrian Centre,
near Aboyne in Aberdeenshire, has stepped in to save
a group of young horse riders from being disappointed
following the cancellation of a trip to France. The
six youngsters from across England were expecting to
spend a week in Normandy, joining in a festival of riding
tracing the routes used by William the Conqueror, but
two weeks before they were due to depart the French
organisers were forced to cancel the event. |
The
BHS, who dealt with the initial invitation, was aware of
how disappointed the riders would be, and asked Jacqueline
Rider of Glen Tanar Equestrian if it was possible for the
group to spend a week riding in the outstanding countryside
around Glen Tanar. Jacqueline was delighted to help out
and so all the youngsters have been enjoying the rugged
scenery of the Grampians seen from the back of a horse.

Crowds Again At Newmarket
Lisa
Hancock, Managing Director of Newmarket, said: We
were almost 1,000 up on Ladies Day and achieved the same
on Wednesday - the overall increase for the first two days
is a pleasing 11.7% over last year. Another
high-quality card allied to some great summer weather has
brought in many more racegoers. We are delighted with how
the 2003 July Meeting is going.
The appearance of Australian sprinting sensation Choisir
in todays Group One £250,000 Darley July Cup
means that Newmarket Racecourse will have a strong Aussie
flavour.
All
Australian passport holders will gain half-price admission
to the racecourse on Thursday, July 10, and it is hoped,
that with so many Australians living in London, a lot of
them will come to Newmarket to support the horse who has
so enthralled the Australian public.

Medieval
Hunting
Richard Almond
The latest book on all aspects of hunting in medieval European
society Includes 50 stunning illustrations Offers a historical
perspective on current debates about hunting and countryside
use
Hunting was a major economic and leisure occupation throughout
the European Middle Ages, and while it has featured in studies
of medieval literature, there is no study of the methods,
techniques and social history of hunting itself.
Richard Almond's book brings vividly to life hunting as
an economic necessity and as an expression of medieval humanity's
sense of oneness with nature. It will dispel some of the
myths and misunderstandings about hunting, including the
view that it was chiefly an aristocratic pursuit, and a
male one at that! Richard Almond shows that hunting (in
which he includes fishing, hawking and poaching) was enjoyed
by all classes and by women as well as men.

Trot
along to Devon for a truly rural escape
There
is nothing better than escaping on a long ride to
get away from the routines of everyday life, yet why
do so many of us make do with the same monotonous
rides when Great Britain has so much more to offer?
In a recent survey* Devon was revealed as the 'horsiest
county in England'. Not only has it been recognised
for its outstanding equestrian activities and facilities,
but also as home to an abundance of bridleways offering
a variety of challenges amongst some of Britain's
most attractive countryside.
However, the difficulties of finding your way around
unknown territory can be off-putting and stressful.
The answer to this is simple - be sure to pack a good
map! It will help you locate even the most hidden
bridleways, resulting in a more satisfying and personalised
escape.
Ordnance Survey's range of Explorer maps provides
equine enthusiasts with the most authoritative guide
to the countryside yet. With unrivaled, accurate detail
that highlights car parks, riding stables, bridleways,
picnic sites and of course local pubs, you can ensure
that you make the most of your escape. So what can
you explore in the horsiest county in Great Britain?

Woodstock,
Ontario, July 2, 2003... Cleve Wells, one of the world's
most foremost quarter horse experts, is coming to Ontario
in 2004. Wells, who has trained and produced an incredible
17 American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) World Champions
and Reserve World Champions, will showcase his remarkable
talent at the Can-Am Equine Extravaganza to be held at the

A resident of Burleson, Texas, Wells, is one of the equine
industry's most coveted speakers and clinicians regarding
the training of different disciplines of horses.
"I spend about 30 weeks a year on the road doing clinics
and seminars," said Wells, 43. "I love what I
do, and love to pass on my knowledge to people to help them
improve their relationships with their horses."
Wells said nowadays it isn't so much training as it is coaching
when it comes to conditioning the animal.

Welcome
to the Dude Ranch of Missouri
We
have great colt pictures for your enjoyment. This seems
to be the year of the fillies. Six of seven have been
fillies.
We
hope you enjoy these pictures as much as we do. It seems
we can watch the colts play forever. The palomino colt
was playing and running in the dew laden grass early
one morning and was really trying her new legs on for
speed. Well, she slipped and fell. It was funny how
she reacted. At first she looked around to see if anyone
had seen her accident. She seemed unsure as to whether
anyone witnessed her mishap, so, just to be safe, she
reached down and acted like she was eating grass. Now
we all know that young colts don't eat much grass, but
she acted like she planned that fall just so she could
get a bit of grass. |
Cattle
Drives : Do you want a real challenge? Try herding one hundred
cows into a small enclosure. Talk about team penning. That's
team penning on a grand scale. This is where your horsemanship
and cattle savvy is put to the test. As one old cowboy said
"There is many a slip between the cup and the lip."
The same is true when herding cattle. About the time everything
is going right a wild cow will try to break free and take
the herd with her. That is when it gets real interesting.
One cowboy has to bring her back while another holds the
herd. For you that want to learn about cattle herding.

Martin
& Mike Make Music At Hickstead
Mike Rutherford, of Genesis fame, and other equestrian
personalities joined Martin Collins to mark the launch
of ECOTRACK, his latest generation synthetic riding
surface at Hickstead prior to the European Dressage
Championships. Mike, a keen Dressage follower (his
wife Angie, competes at advanced level) is further
supporting the championships, having written the official
music for the event. Martin commented "We are
delighted that Mike was able to join us today for
the launch of ECOTRACK. He and Angie have been clients
for some years so it's particularly fitting that we
are both involved in the European Championships. We
know that with our surfaces the horses have every
chance to perform at their peak, and we wish the British
team all the very best in their quest to qualify for
the 2004 Athens Olympics."

'Low
Price' Ex-Racehorse Earns HOYS Place
When
Julie Farrell and her business partner Hilary Curtis went
to the Ascot sales they had only £10 between them
and were on a "girls day out."
But
they finished the day as owners of a Thoroughbred out of
racing. Now, after a South Essex Insurance Brokers "Search
for a Star" selection day, the horse, Millimetre, has
booked them a place at this year's Horse of the Year Show.
"Hilary
and I went to Ascot for a girls day out," said Julie.
"We saw this horse in a box and liked him and when
he came into the ring to be sold we were stunned at the
low price. So we bought him. "Then
we had to rush back home, organise the money and return
with a horse box. When we got back there was only the auctioneer
and our horse left on site!"
Their
success came at the Search for a Star selection day held
at the West Wiltshire Equestrian Centre, when Millimetre,
ridden by Emily Curtis, took one of the two Horse the Year
Show places in the Riding Horse class.

'L'
Mix - specially formulated for horses or ponies at risk
from laminitis
Every
new piece of research indicates that, for horses and
ponies prone to laminitis, a high-fibre feed is much
healthier than a high-calorie starch-based one - the
amount of starch consumed by the horse tends to be the
main trigger for an attack of laminitis. With no added
sugars, molasses or cereals 'L' Mix is high in fibre,
yet low in starch and calories and is thus an excellent
feed for these horses. Alfalfa and chaff are low in
fructans and, as long fibre, ensure longer chewing time,
which helps to maintain a healthy digestive system in
horses or ponies on a restricted diet.

Buckskin
Extravagana and Production Sale
It
is summertime in Arizona, and at HorseBreakers Unlimited
that means training, riding and grooming the best selection
of buckskin horses anywhere in America. The Ninth Annual
Buckskin Extravaganza is just around the corner and at Jon
and Marywade Gilberts ranch in Dewey, Arizona everyone is
going full speed getting things ready. "Buckskins seem
to be the 'hot' color in the horse world today" says
Jon "but we've been promoting and selling the buckskins
up here for years." The sale will include not just
buckskins but also duns and grullos. There will be an excellent
selection of saddle horses from trail horses to World Champions,
as well as brood mares, weanlings, yearlings and two year
olds. We sell Buckskins and all kinds of good horses year
round, but I think what really put us on the map is our
Buckskin Extravaganza. It is an extremely popular event
that brings people from all over the country to Dewey, Arizona
to look and shop for the finest buckskin horses.

Catching
the Difficult Horse!
A newly acquired horse or a horse that may be herd bound
needs a little assurance from us. They want to know that
you are not going to hurt them or abuse them in any way.
You as the owner/ trainer must create a friendly, but "I'
am the boss" relationship with your horse, if you want
a long and rewarding partnership with him. Horses, no matter
what age, are constantly learning from their interactions
with us. Whether or not you think your interaction with
your horse is a "formal training session" or not,
your horse is always learning. This is the case whether
you are riding, longeing, feeding, playing, bathing, or
just walking through your horse's pasture or in his stall.
Your horse will come to trust you as you work, play and
interact with him. To start this process you must make every
experience with your horse an enjoyable, learning experience.
For instance, if you are having problems catching your horse
in the pasture then you probably don't have a working relationship
with him but this can be handled with a little patience
and persistence from you.
First you must reassure your horse you mean him no harm
and that it is a pleasant experience when he is with you.
When you go out into the pasture don't just go with the
intention of "grabbing" your horse for a quick
ride, workout or training session.

Jumping - Kerrygold Grand Prix League - Marshall Wins
Blessington, Enters League Top 6
ALWAYS
a potential threat to the leaders in the Kerrygold
Grand Prix League, Ballyclare's Harry Marshall today
(Sunday) clinched the Blessington Super League Grand
Prix and catapulted himself into Third on the League
table. Clocking
up his first Grand Prix win at Saintfield three weeks
ago, Marshall repeated the medicine in sparkling form
at the sunlit sand arena in Kill Equestrian Centre,
where the Blessington Show was held today, riding
<Splendido>.
League
leader James Kernan went in after Marshall, and although
turning in a copybook clear, was over three seconds
behind the Ulsterman, but the Super League points
accrued were enough to increase his lead as No.1 in
the overall table. Marshall
afterwards said that his own final round was <not
just good, but fantastic>, and was obviously ecstatic
about his horse's performance against a very competitive
field. Please
