Pippa
Looks For Fourth Hickstead Win
Badminton
winner and European champion Pippa Funnell, already on the
crest of an eventing wave, has her sights firmly set on
another landmark win this year - a fourth victory in the
showjumper/event rider annual "needle match" at
the Golden Jubilee Royal International Horse Show (July
24-28).
The
Eventing Grand Prix is a novel mix of eventing and showjumping
obstacles which starts and finishes in Hickstead's famous
International Arena but with the middle section threading
through showground owner Douglas Bunn's garden!
Pippa,
with Anne Burnet's mare The Tourmaline Rose, has won three
of the four runnings of this innovative competition where
victory has so far eluded the showjumpers - although last
year Michael Whitaker ran her a very close second.
The
Eventing Grand Prix also pairs off riders from each discipline,
with individual scores amalgamated to find a winner. One
pair in the Pairs Challenge will be sponsored by Jumpers
Horseline, while new fence sponsor Devoucoux will be branding
one of the cross country fences.

BHS
Access Week 2002 - highlighting the need for safer
off road riding
Plans
are in hand to mark the British Horse Society's JUBILEE
ACCESS Week - 25 May - 4 June. The week will concentrate
on the BHS presenting awards to local authorities,
landowners and individuals who have all addressed
the needs of riders for equestrian access.
|
The
aim of BHS Access Week is to highlight the need for more
off road riding for horse riders and carriage drivers. Today's
roads are too busy, and today's drivers too impatient, to
enable riders to use the roads safely. There are an estimated
3000 accidents involving horses on the roads every year,
and the BHS is campaigning for measures to reduce that number.
This
year there will be twelve "Route Creation Awards"
to landowners who have set up permissive bridleways or new
trails and nine "Good Guy Awards" made to individuals
or local authorities who have consistently worked to open
up bridleways and provide more equestrian routes.

Businesses
Must Look To Safety, Says SEIB
Liability
insurance becoming more difficult and expensive
Public
liability insurance could become difficult to get in coming
months - and the situation could pose a threat to riding
schools and livery yards
The
situation is a result of high awards being made by the courts,
coupled with shock waves from the terrorist attack on New
York's twin towers. Insurance companies are now viewing
liability cover with much more care than ever before and
some high-profile companies are even pulling out of the
market altogether. Riding Schools, livery yards and other
equestrian businesses with bad claims records could find
premiums rocketing - or be uninsurable.
"Claims
today could result in courts awarding damages running into
millions of pounds," says Barry Fehler, managing director
of South Essex Insurance Brokers, one of the few companies
still able to arrange this type of cover. "It has not
been helped by people being encouraged to resort to litigation,
but the two situations together have resulted in a quite
serious closing down of this market."
In
the future, it is likely to be only insurers with a large
volume of liability business who will be willing to take
on new clients, and even they will be examining renewals
more closely than ever before.
Riding
schools, and if DEFRA minister Elliot Morley pursues his
comments on widening licensing laws, livery yards, would
also need public liability insurance to continue trading.

I Through V at HITS Catskills in Ellenville, New York |
Saugerties,
NY (May 10, 2002) Horse Shows In the Sun, Inc. (HITS), producer
of six world class hunter/jumper horse show circuits nationwide,
has announced that HITS Catskills, a six-event summer series
of horse shows in Ellenville, New York, will offer a $75,000
Grand Prix every Sunday in 2002. In addition, HITS Catskills
will offer a $25,000 Grand Prix each Thursday of Weeks I
through V. This puts HITS Catskills total prize money at
over $1,000,000. All eleven of the Grand Prix Classes offered
at HITS Catskills are qualifying events for the King Shavings
U.S. Grand Prix League. Riders compete in qualifying classes
at more than 45 member horse shows nationwide, earning points
that may result in an invitation to the King Shavings U.S.
Grand Prix League Invitational Finals to be held September
25-29, 2002 at HITS Commonwealth Park in Culpeper, VA.
HITS
Catskills is a great cross-section of the people involved
in the sport, said Tom Struzzieri, owner and president of
HITS. This series appeals to all different types of exhibitorsfrom
the family who brings one child on a pony to Olympians on
their Grand Prix horses. The majority of the East Coast's
top show jumpers compete at these shows. It is appropriate
for HITS to respond to this type of participation by offering
high stakes prize money. We also are working to build a
stronger spectator base. By establishing a show with top
level prize money and riders, we expect to attract additional
attention to the show and to the sport."

Computer
Sciences Corporation sponsors information provision system
at premier sporting event, 11th- 12th May 2002
9th
May 2002: Computer Sciences Corporation - one of the world's
leading IT services firms, with growing business interests
in Derbyshire and Yorkshire - is sponsoring the public address
system at this year's Chatsworth International Horse Trials.
Chatsworth,
the Derbyshire home of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire,
will be welcoming the world's top riders this weekend (11th-12th
May). The 1,000 acre Park, on the banks of the river Derwent,
is not only an invaluable local leisure destination but
also one of the country's most spectacular settings for
international eventing.
"CSC
is particularly proud to be supporting and entertaining
the rural community as they recover from the foot and mouth
epidemic, which caused last year's event to be cancelled,"
said Tony Cliffe, Director, Business Development for Computer
Sciences Corporation.
"Efficient
and effective information provision will be particularly
important this year, as the event now includes an entertainment
arena as well as the usual showjumping area, acting as a
focus for a wide variety of additional countryside pursuits
and businesses," added Tony.

Mini
Foal Named after Norwich City Captain
The
first Spring foal at ILPH (International League for
the Protection of Horses) Hall Farm, Snetterton, near
Norwich, came into the world early in the morning
of Thursday 9 May, measuring in at just 55 cms or
18".
Although staff knew that Rosie, an 8.3 hh 8 year old
skewbald miniature Shetland, was near her time they
were thrilled to find her with a sturdy colt foal
when they came into work on Thursday morning.
Comments Tony Tyler, ILPH Hall Farm Manager, "Rosie
came to us already in foal in January with 13 other
ponies. She was in poor condition and infested with
lice.
"We are over the moon that she has given birth
to a lovely, healthy, strong little colt foal and
because we are all Norwich City supporters we have
decided to call him Iwan, in honour of Norwich City's
Captain, and hero, Iwan Roberts !"

Clear
Gaps In Border Controls Threaten EU Equine Industry
The Annual General Meeting of the European Federation of
Thoroughbred Breeder's Association (EFTBA) will be reminded
that Border Inspection Posts are the first line of defence
against the importation of animal diseases - including equine
diseases which could be severely detrimental to the sector.
The point will be raised as part of a joint presentation
by EFTBA Chairman Ms Eimear Mulhern; and Mr Cathal Lynch
from the Irish Business Bureau.
"Whilst the EU have provided considerable support in
terms of thorough inspections and a report on these facilities,
the EFTBA is extremely concerned that the standard of veterinary
checks on live animals obviously varies considerably from
country to country; and, in some cases, is practically non-existent,"
says Ms Mulhern. "We only have to look at the recent
Foot & Mouth Disease outbreak to appreciate the potential
consequences of this."
Ms Mulhern will call on Thoroughbred Breeding Associations
throughout its 22 member countries to maintain pressure
on their own national Governments who are responsible for
operating Border Inspection Posts.

BETA
Scores 'Non-Heating' Victory
BETA
is celebrating after securing the right for feed manufacturers
to continue to use the words 'non-heating' and 'cool'
on packaging.
After
many months of negotiations with the Food Standards
Agency and LACOTS (Local Authorities Coordinating
Office for Food and Trading Standards) an agreement
has been reached between all parties over a definition
for 'non-heating' and by inference 'cool'.
|
The
issue over the description arose after a Trading Standards
Officer in Surrey complained to several BETA members about
the use of common claims which included 'non-heating' and
'cool' on the basis that they were not scientifically substantiable.
The industry was concerned that should they be forced to
cease using these terms, other words to describe the same
effect would be developed and used or other points of reference,
such as protein, may be incorrectly used by consumers seeking
guidance in their purchasing decisions.
To
negotiate and work out a satisfactory way forward the BETA
Energy Working Party was set up, chaired by BETA Chief Executive
Claire Williams.

Olympic
Veteran Anne Kursinski DominatesGarden State Grand Prix
At Garden State Horse Show
Out
of a field of 26, only four horses kept the rails in the
cups in the $45,000 Garden State Grand Prix, and three of
them were ridden by three-time U.S Olympic veteran Anne
Kursinski of Flemington, NJ. The Garden State Grand Prix
was the highlight of the Garden State Horse Show, held May
1-5 at the Sussex County Fairgrounds in Augusta, NJ.
Kursinskis
winning horse was Eros, not a surprise considering their
long and successful history together. Eros was Kursinskis
mount on the USETs Silver Medal team at the 1996 Atlanta
Olympics. It had been a while since Eros and Kursinski had
led the victory gallop and that made Kursinski even more
thrilled.
Kursinskis
other two mounts that qualified for the jump-off are young
jumpers who exhibited their strong talent in the grand prix
ring. This combination of young and experienced horses in
the Grand Prix was a major factor for course designer Anthony
DAmbrosio when building the course.
It
was a slightly mixed field, said DAmbrosio.
So I built a course that was demanding enough to separate
them and technical enough without being overly scopey. Like
the triple I used two verticals to an oxer. It was
more careful and gymnastic-like instead of needing power
and scope.
The
only rider other than Kursinski to finish clean over the
first course was James Benedetto of Northport, NY, riding
Cacique. The nine-year-old Holsteiner is owned by Benedetto
and the Kamine Family.

The
Story of Horse Racings Original Iron Horse
Lexington,
KY (May 9, 2002) Eclipse Press announces the publication
of Round Table, the latest addition to the Thoroughbred
Legends series.
Round
Table was an everymans horse. In an era when larger-than-life
racehorses such as Native Dancer, Swaps, and Nashua became
national heroes, Round Table quietly and steadily racked
up victories.
In
Round Table, longtime editor and writer John McEvoy tells
the inspirational story of the horse who gave his all every
time. In a career spanning four years, from 1956 to 1959,
Round Table raced an amazing sixty-six times, winning forty-three
races. He did everything asked of him: he traveled coast
to coast, carried weight, stayed, and sprinted. He was a
Horse of the Year, a handicap champion, and a turf champion.
Like a little machine, Round Table would not quit.
Although
a small, unassuming brown horse, Round Table was regally
bred by Kentuckys famed Claiborne Farm. With the death
of Claiborne founder A.B. Hancock Sr., Round Table was sold
to help pay estate taxes, in essence saving the farm.

"Riding For America"
By
Diana Volk
Horsemen
all over the United States will be saddling up, riding for
freedom in the most famous ride of our present day history
"Riding for America". It is possible for you,
your family or friends to become part of the ride that will
make history as it crosses the country riding for Freedom,
riding to be an American, riding together as a group proving
that we are from an united nation, carrying on what another
country started in the "Cowboy Way"
Cowboys
and cowgirls, headed by Gregg and Debbi Hampton, from Alberta,
Canada wanting to reach out a comforting hand to Americans
in the shadow of the terrorist act of September 11th started
a horseback ride collecting donations, headed toward the
United States border to pass on what they had collected
calling it "Alberta Rides for America". As the
morning of September 25th dawned riders could be seen for
miles converging on the United States and Canadian border
with riders from three nations. The United States, Blackfeet
Nation and Canada with 200 plus riders strong were joined
together in a ride for freedom. Several of the Blackfeet
Tribal Council rode in the event, Earl Old Person, chairman
in full ceremonial dress, including drummers and singers
to honor the meeting, singing the "Warrior Song and
Flag Song". The Blackfeet Nation fed all the hungry
riders before their return home, as nations were united
and souls were united.

Is
It My Fault - Or My Horse's?
WAVERLY, WV--Every rider has experienced the situation
where they ask their horse for a particular shape
or movement and either nothing happens or something
other than what they wanted happens. You apply the
aids for a left lead canter and the horse just keeps
walking along as though nothing changed at all. Or
you apply those aids and the horse wrings its tail
and moves off at a brisk trot instead of the intended
canter. What went wrong?
Without "being there" and observing the
interaction, the only thing we can say for sure is
that the communication between you and your horse
failed. Why it failed is a more complicated issue
that frustrates multitudes of riders daily. You are
not alone.
|
Communication
can fail because of rider error. It can fail because the
horse is not sufficiently far along in its training to understand
the shape that the rider's aids suggest. It can fail because
the horse is physically unable to take the shape because
of conformation faults, old injuries, lingering soreness
from yesterday's workout, or equipment that restricts or
interferes with the shape. It can fail because the horse
is mentally burned out. Or the communication can fail because
the horse simply has the kind of personality that says that
day, "I don't want to," or "You can't make
me"or "You didn't ask the right way so I'm going
to ignore that."
You need to examine your particular communication failure
from all of those different perspectives in order to figure
out why things didn't go according to your plan. The first
thing to ask yourself is whether the horse is capable of
understanding your request. Where is he in his training?
Is this something he's just learned or a movement he's been
doing for some time?
