Carolyn Smith Wins Open Championship At Necarne Castle Dressage Festival

Necarne Castle, Irvinestown, County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland
Saturday 4th & Sunday 5th May 2002

Carolyn Smith and Hails Vision won the Fermanagh Council sponsored Open Championship at the Necarne Castle dressage festival on Sunday (5th May 2002).

Anne Marie Dunphy from County Kilkenny placed second with the stallion Mercury and Donie McNamara took third place on Queen of the Night. The championship ran over two days with Smith winning the opening class on Saturday with her Irish draught gelding when scoring 65.16% having opted for Advanced test 106. McNamara slotted into second on 61.61% but he had ridden the higher level Intermediare II test. The competitors lined out once again in Necarne Castle's picturesque walled garden for the final class of the Fermanagh Council Championship on the Sunday afternoon. International judges Jennie Lorriston Clarke from Great Britain and Alison King from Hong Kong judged both classes. Anne Marie Dunphy and Mercury won the second leg of the championship with a score of 64.25%. Mc Namara slotted into second place on 61.4% with Smith third on 61.13%. Both lady riders decided to ride the Intermediare I test with McNamara electing for the Grand Prix test. Speaking afterwards McNamara said he was thrilled that Queen of the Night had scored 61.4% in her first Grand Prix. This pairing will head to England later in the summer to compete in some premier league shows.

There was an international flavour to this years festival with visiting pony teams from England and Scotland. The Scots also sent junior, young rider and senior teams to compete against their Irish hosts. Junior rider Eileen Kapp from County Galway with her Russian import Davis won the T P Topping Advanced Medium Championship thereby helping to secure victory for the Irish team in the Junior team championship. Keeley Sinclair a member of the Scottish Bavarian warmblood team won the Mourne Rosettes Medium Championship with Jelstin.

Appropriately the Dressage Northern Ireland team came out on top in the senior team championship with the pony honours going to the English North West team and Scotland won the young rider team equivalent.
