Who
Cares if British Horses and Ponies are Sent Abroad
for Slaughter ?
We
do say the ILPH (International League for the Protection
of Horses) who are appealing to all British animal
lovers to sign their petition today to help convince
the politicians that we will not allow our horses
and ponies to suffer long journeys to European abattoirs,
ever again.
Comments
Jo White, ILPH Campaigns Manager, "We are making
a final push for more signatures before our petitions
close at the end of the month. With less than a month
to go before we close them we are urging all our supporters
to rally and make an extra effort to get more signatures."
|
The
on-line petition, currently standing at around 27,000, will
close on 29 February and all the paper petitions need to
be received at ILPH Headquarters at Anne Colvin House, Snetterton,
Norwich, NR16 2LR, by that date.
Jo
continues, "Alongside the petitions we are extending
our letter writing campaign, this time to local MPs. We
are now at a point where public support must also be directed
towards the politicians who must put pressure on the Government
to act so that the export trade is not resumed."

FEI VET QUARTERLY NEWS
The future of equestrian sports can only be secured if the
welfare of the involved horses is well protected. A competitive
use of the horse as an athlete in sports, with its dependency
on the rider to decide when the limits of performance have
been reached, necessitates the presence of a veterinary
safety net.

Richard's
WOW Factor!
Current
National Champion, European Team Bronze medalist &
Olympic dressage rider Richard Davison appreciates the
advantages of a comfortable saddle for his horse, using
Flairtm the fully adjustable air flocking system. So
when the manufacturers, First Thought Equine Ltd, designed
and made the revolutionary WOW saddle, incorporating
Flair as well as a host of other original features,
Richard knew it would be something special.
"In dressage at all levels, but particularly at
international level, it is vital to have the horse moving
freely. The more advanced movements are physically demanding
of the horse and require expression that must not be
impeded in any way by the saddle. The advanced features
of a WOW saddle allow the maximum amount of flexibility
- it really helps their way of going and the air flocked
panels provide ultimate comfort for the horse and for
me!" says Richard, who will be training and competing
on WOW from now on.

Bring

American Paint Horse Association plans several trail
rides for 2004
FORT
WORTH, Texas-The American Paint Horse Association
(APHA) will host more trail rides than any other time
in its history with at least ten outings planned around
the nation this year.
|
Offering
trail ride activities for members and their friends is taking
on increasing importance for APHA. A recent membership survey,
in fact, showed that 76 percent of its members participate
in some sort of trail riding activity.
"Our
goal in 2004 is to accommodate our members and make our
rides as easy as possible for them to attend," said
Cody Weirich, APHA trail ride coordinator. "That's
why we've added several more rides in the past few years.
Also, we understand that not everyone can get away for a
whole week, so we've increased the number of weekend rides.
We'll also make room for people who want to come out and
join us for only a day or two on some of our longer rides."

A
Policeman's Lot
A
sad little ceremony, dampened by the pouring rain,
was held recently to honour the memory of ILPH Alexander,
a long serving police horse, faithful companion and
friend.
Trevor
and Noreen Bassendale of Belton, near Doncaster were
at ILPH (International League for the Protection of
Horses) Hall Farm in Norfolk, to plant a sweet chestnut
tree in honour of the much loved ex-police horse that
they had on loan from the ILPH for over 10 years,
who died at the end of last year.
|
Comments
Trevor, "After 12 years serving with the West Yorkshire
Mounted Police Force he was retired to the ILPH and came
out on loan to us. He was a wonderful horse, a great character
and much loved by children. We miss him dreadfully, and
without him our life won't be quite the same again."

BHS
Ragwort Control Act becomes law this month
The
British Horse Society sponsored Ragwort Control Act
becomes law on 20 February, some fourteen months after
it was declared in the 2002 Private Members' Bill
parliamentary ballot.
|
The
Act provides for a statutory code of practice to prevent
and control the spread of ragwort, the first time such a
code has been established. In anticipation of the Bill's
success, Defra commissioned ADAS to draft the code and set
up a steering group of interested organisations, including
the BHS who had initially approached the department about
producing a code.
It is expected that the code will be finalised and passed
before parliament in time for the Spring growing season
when Ragwort is at the rosette stage of its lifecycle. Please

Million Pets At Risk From Floods
London
(ots) - Britain's pet charity, The Blue Cross, warned today
that there are potentially one million pets at risk of loss
or injuryin times of flooding.
With government figures indicating there are approximately
two million properties on flood risk areas across England
and Wales, the charity warned that with pet ownership in
the UK at an all time high, the risk of flooding affecting
household pets is growing.
According to the Environment Agency, fewer than one in ten
people have made any advance preparations to minimise potential
damage and heartache caused by flooding.
Steve Goody, director of companion animal welfare at The
Blue Cross said: "Pets rely on their owners for protection,
so in times of flooding they need you to ensure their welfare.
What we are suggesting is not rocket science, it simply
means that owners must think in advance of the 'what if's'
and ensure they make provision for their pets." Please

Are
you looking for that special saving on a bag of feed
that will help your pocket and your horses' condition

the answer's 'yes', then don't delay. Get down to
your local merchant where you will find a special
offer worth £1 off every bag of Hickstead Horse
Feeds' Condition Mix or Cubes sold before the end

This
is the time of year when you may see your horse is
losing weight, so put aside a few minutes every week
to assess his body condition, using a weigh tape and
condition scoring.
To
eliminate any of the external issues, assess potential
worm burdens, and have teeth checked. If necessary,
reconsider your horse's daily management routine,
ensuring you eliminate stress.
Next,
ask yourself whether you are feeding enough, of the

Dances
With Horses Inc. : A Winter Welcome
From
Frank Bell & Alexandra Danea
We
are in the thick of winter here in Idaho with snow already
several feet deep. When the sun shines its incredibly
beautiful especially when gliding over the top of the snow
on skis. In fact Im just in from a great tour of several
miles. At one point from a distance I noticed some fresh
tracks of a large animal. I closed in and determined the
direction the creature was heading then moved quietly along.
Within ten minutes or so I spotted a huge cow moose silently
drifting through the trees. They move with such grace and
agility it defies imagination. We pretended not to see each
other as she settled into a thick grouping of mature aspens
and began munching away. Im delighted to be surrounded
by such wildlife and welcome their visits.
With
winter come some very distinct precautions regarding our
horses. Water is a huge concern. Just as humans seldom feel
the need to drink and can easily become dehydrated, so do
horses. Drinking freezing water isnt very palatable
so do your best to provide drinkable water by using a heater,
removing floating ice, etc. Do what you can to encourage
the drinking of water.

The
final was postponed from Sunday because two days of rain
made the stadium field unsafe for the horses and players.
Crab
Orchard maintained a comfortable lead throughout the game,
including 7-3 at halftime and 10-6 after the fifth chukker.
There was only one tie, at 1-1, in the first chukker.
Black
Watch started strong in the sixth chukker as 8-goaler Facundo
Pieres converted a 40-yard penalty shot with 5:35 remaining
in the game and adding a 15-yard near-side with Julio Gracida
on his hip 30 seconds later to cut the margin to 10-8.

The
British Horse Society and a gentle giant make a wish
come true for two little girls
BHS
Scotland teamed up with Big Scottish John of Hawthorn
Den Clydesdales at Wester Melville Farm outside Edinburgh
recently (25 January) in response to an email sent
from Alaska and, as a result, two unsuspecting and
brave girls had the day out of a lifetime.
The BHS Scotland website receives many requests and
enquiries each day and tries to respond to every one
so when a plea for help from an Alaskan Auntie appeared
in the 'Inbox' it received due attention.
Writing
from Anchorage, Alaska, Saunders McNeill was keen
to arrange a special experience for her nieces Zoe
(9) and Ninian (6) who had lost their mother to illness
a year ago. The girls had always nurtured a particular
dream to own a heavy horse, but living in Edinburgh
made this somewhat impractical. However as Zoe and
Ninian obviously miss their Mum, and recently celebrated
their birthdays, Saunders felt a heavy horse experience
was something they deserved.

Open
Access To The Countryside - Views Sought On Public Places
Legislation
The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs
is seeking views on whether regulations should be made to
limit the circumstances in which open access land, as defined
in the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000, will qualify
as a 'public place' under existing laws.
A three month consultation, launched today, is part of the
programme to implement the new right of public access to
England's mountain, moor, heath, down and registered common
land under the Act.
Public places are subject to a wide range of legislation
to promote the environmental value of land, control anti-social
behaviour, and protect the health and safety of users. The
consultation examines whether making regulations to limit
the application of legislation about public places across
access land is necessary to safeguard landowners' interests.

Cleaning
Paddocks - definitely a job for Suckers !
In
the first of a number of case studies providing indisputable
proof of the effective application of technology, we
look at a thriving Livery business, which bases its
success on sound care principles and shrewd investments
in effective equipment.
Barbara
Kaylor runs a thriving family livery business at Southill
Farm, Stock in Essex, with an established reputation
for breeding quality foals and caring for owners brood
mares through trouble free pregnancies. There is a committed
strategy to invest in cost-effective technology and
the artificial insemination programme is supported by
modern foaling aids and CCTV monitoring. |
Southill
Livery has some 80 acres available, with 38 acres dedicated
to 6 grazing paddocks, with the remaining being rested.
This provides natural grazing conditions for some 30 horses,
but also provides a cleaning problem for Barbara !

FEI
World Cup Jumping News: Shutterfly Soars to Victory
in Amsterdam
.
Great
riding by Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum and superb jumping
from Shutterfly sealed Germanys fourth victory
in the 2003/2004 FEI World Cup series in Amsterdam
today.
After
a two-year absence from the international calendar
the Dutch fixture made a successful and welcome return,
and the spectators in the RAI Holland Complex were
treated to a thrilling jump-off which went right down
to the wire.
Course
designer Rob Janssen enjoyed a busy few days because
he also fills the role of Show Director but he found
enough time and inspiration to come up with a clever
World Cup track to which only five riders found all
the answers.
"It
was difficult today" Meredith said afterwards.
"I estimated six clears it was technical,
big and long and I believe all World Cup classes
should be like that so riders can be prepared for
what they will meet at the Final it asked lots
of questions, it was set perfectly especially
for me!" she added.

Annie
Starke And Boston Irish Win Children's Modified Jumper Championship
WELLINGTON,
FL - February 1, 2004 - Eric Lamaze, 36, of Schomberg, Ontario,
debuted his new Grand Prix horse and Olympic hopeful, Tempete,
at the Winter Equestrian Festival today in Wellington, FL,
topping a class of 32 entries to win the $35,000 Farr XTN
Grand Prix of Palm Beach presented by Western Hay, CSI***.
Prior
to the class, course designer Javier Fernandez of Guadalajara,
Mexico, explained his plan for the airy course with its
generous 114-second Time Allowed. "In this first week
some horses are jumping well and some horses haven't jumped
for the last three months. It's difficult to create courses
for the average - not too hard, not too easy," Fernandez
said. "This Grand Prix is very easy. The horses need
to jump easy now so that they are better for the next week,
better for the seventh week, and for some, the Invitational
in Tampa." Please

the hitherto unheard-of sum of Euro120,000 guarenteed price

FEI
World Cup Dressage News: Dutch Heroine Wins Again
Anky
van Grunsven emerged victorious from a top class field
in Amsterdam today, winning her second FEI World Cup
qualifying competition on the trot. Van Grunsven's
young horse Gestion Salinero, only nine years old,
kept his head in a hot-house atmosphere to produce
moments of brilliance in the 80 per cent-scoring test.
"Gestion Salinero actually felt better in the
Friday's grand prix when he was more relaxed, and
today at times I just had to try and keep it quiet,
but there were some moments where I knew that with
more experience he could be a great horse".
Beatriz Ferrer-Salat rode Beauvalais with her customary
vivacity for second place. Her World Cup season has
been curtailed by other commitments, and Beauvalais
caught a fever late last year, so the Spanish rider
is now concentrating on the outdoor season, unlike
Germany's Isabell Werth who is out to win a place
at the World Cup Final in April.

Clara
Lindner And Priceless Win Amateur-Owner Hunter 18-35 Championship,
Section A
WELLINGTON,
FL - January 31, 2004 - "My horses are all really good
in the mud, actually, they're used to it. We've been in
the mud a lot," said Clara Lindner, 18, of Cincinnati,
Ohio, winner of the Amateur-Owner Hunter 18-35 Championship,
Section A, at the Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington,
Florida, today. Rains that commenced yesterday and continued
throughout the day in the 'Sunshine State' created soupy
conditions, but did not hinder Ms. Lindner's performances.
"It's a little harder. Everything is a little slower
and we get stuck in there some times, but my horses are
all generally really good with it." Ms. Lindner brought
six horses from her family's All Seasons Farm to the Winter
Equestrian Festival and earned the Championship aboard Priceless,
an eight-year-old bay Dutch Warmblood gelding that she's
owned and ridden for two years. Ms. Lindner trains with
Tom Wright. Kilkenny Insurance Agency/ICH sponsors the Amateur-Owner

Kurten
Takes Seventh At Zurich On New Mount
AFTER
some weeks of waiting, Jessica Kurten finally took
a Top ten place with her newly-acquired horse, <Castle
Forbes Maike>, the ten yr-old Dutch-bred mare formerly
ridden by Belgium's Philippe LeJeune.
Purchased
by Lady Georgina Forbes, the mare has not featured
well in any class in the short time since Kurten took
over as rider, a phenomenon usually associated with
horse and rider getting to know one another. But today
(Saturday) in the major Swiss Life event at Zurich,
the bay mare finally started to show her moves, taking
a very respectable seventh in a huge Accumulator class
of 55 riders.
