one Fell swoop
A fresh approach to repairing a cleft palate lets a rare
pony foal live
Less than a dozen Fell ponies-a rare breed imported from
northern England in the 1940s-exist in Canada. So when one
is born with a serious physical defect, alarm bells sound.
Fortunately, in the case of two-day-old Fell filly June
Bug, Ontario Veterinary College researchers were standing
by. And, based on their experiences with her, they now have
a new way to help other horses with similar problems.
June Bug came to OVC two summers ago suffering from a cleft
palate, a tear to the soft palate located between the windpipe
and throat. This soft palate, along with another structure
in the throat called the epiglottis, come together to seal
the air pipes when food is swallowed. The tear breaks this
seal, allowing milk to enter the windpipe and then the lungs.
This causes fatal pneumonia, essentially drowning the animal
if left untreated. It's a highly unusual problem in horses,
but is not thought to be inherited.
Owner Joan O'Brien of Sterling, Ontario, knew she had trouble
on her hands. "June Bug was so small that our vet had
to use dog-sized instruments to inspect her mouth,"
says O'Brien.
Because of the severity of the problem, June Bug was referred
to OVC, where Dr. Ludovic Bouré took on her case.

Texan
Online
Taking care of 10 horses, plus being a fulltime escrow officer
can keep a Texas girl pretty busy. But it can't keep her
from going to college in New Mexico.
Jeanie Choate of Manard, TX, enrolled in New Mexico State
University's Training Performance Horses course, and now
she just sits down at her computer anytime she wants to
go to class.
"The idea of learning at home and when I please is
really appealing. I can go to class when I have time, and
I can work at my own pace."
Training Performance Horses is a nine-lesson, step-by-step,
how-to course which begins before the first saddle and takes
the horse all the way to the flying change of leads. How
to teach every basic exercise from the stop to the haunches-in
is covered in the course. A noncredit course, students receive
a certificate of recognition for their efforts when they
complete the program.

Minding
The Membership
No matter what your interest, involvement, or orientation
to the horse industry is, there is most likely an association
that is right for you. From professional associations, to
breed and performance organizations, to youth groups, to
geographically-based, to marketing groups, to welfare, to
therapeutic use of horses, to environmental issues, to land
preservation, to search and rescue - well, the list is a
long one and those mentioned here
give you an idea of the depth and breadth available.
The successful operation of an association is based on a
variety of factors. The factors include vision and mission,
board and leadership development, fundraising, programs
and services, and public relations. One of the many fundraising
methods is to offer membership to the organization. The
members receive benefits in return for paying their dues.
In this way, members become one of the association's customers.
Not all associations can offer memberships based on their
charter, however. For these groups, hiring an attorney provides
the means for making the appropriate governance changes.

Walter
has a coloring book
Color
him black, or color him red. Color him with wild
abandon, or disciplined strokes, but whatever you
do, get in on the fun and color in Walter's Coloring
Book. You could win a prize! (Come-on, mom, come-on,
dad, it's a great stress reducer.)
Just like Walter--a horse, of course--his coloring
book is a little different-it has pictures to color,
but it also has a story to tell about horses, history
and Santa Claus. In Walter's first coloring book,
Walter wants to pull Santa's sleigh. Different in
a second way, Walter's Coloring Book is an e-book,
and can only be ordered over the Internet at www.donblazer.com.
|
"Tiny
tots love to color and they love to have mom or dad read
them Walter's stories. Kids like Walter because he's just
like the horse they dream about or own, and adults like
Walter because he always has something of value to impart.
So Walter's Coloring Book is perfect for the whole family,"
says Diane Blazer, designer and editor.

A
Breath Of Fresh Air In A Feed Balancer
Blue
Chip Original now carries even greater benefits for
horses and ponies of all kinds. The already comprehensive
formulation is being re-launched following the inclusion
of Primo Vento, a synergistic combination of ingredients
designed to help respiration and maintain healthy
lung function. This means that Blue Chip contributes
even more extensively to overall health and well-being.
Primo Vento combines antioxidant vitamins A,C &E,
Omega 3 Oils, Selplex and Inovair; a traditional blend
of herbs, oils, garlic and menthol. Based on scientific
research, this unique fusion is intended to boost
the immune system and maintain a healthy respiratory
tract.
|
The
new Blue Chip formulation has been prompted largely by consumer
demand. Blue Chip asked its customers what most concerned
them about their horses health and well-being. The
overwhelming response was that respiratory problems were
a major concern; the feeling being that horses are increasingly
sensitive to pollen, dust, fungal spores and pollution and
that allergies affecting the respiratory system are becoming
more widespread.
Trials
at a large number of yards (including those of Di Lampard,
Kelly Marks, Kyra Kyrklund and the Yorkshire Riding Centre)
yielded impressive results, one of the most dramatic being
the oldest pony in Britain, 52 year old Samantha from St
Bernards Animal Sanctuary. Staff were previously unaware
that the pony even had breathing problems, putting her shortage
of breath down to old age. However, since being given Blue
Chip Original with Primo Vento, Samantha is far more active,
trotting easily around her paddock without becoming breathless.

The
Women Who Listen To Horses
Dealing
with nervous, remedial or thoroughly misunderstood
horses is all part of a normal day for Sarah Kreutzer,
Debbie Reilly and Maya Horsey - three Monty Roberts
Certified instructors who have brought the legendary
horseman's non-abusive methods of communication home
from California to the UK.
Sharing Monty's vision to make the world a better
place for horses is a passion that drives each one
of them and they work tirelessly to create an environment
in which people can not only listen to their horses,
but also treat them with respect.
Instead of a traditional relationship based on domination
and submission, a two-way channel of communication
is established, with both horse and rider speaking
the same language - Equus.
|
Because
Monty Roberts and his proteges, of whom there are only 16
in the world, are often called 'horsewhisperers' many people
wrongly assume that they spend their time talking quietly
into animal's ears.
"This
name comes from something Monty once said," explains
Debbie. " 'A good trainer can hear a horse speak, a
great trainer can hear a horse whisper'."
"A
trained eye can 'hear a horse through tiny, subtle movements
such as the twitch of an ear, the flaring of a nostril or
tightly drawn-up facial muscles," she continues."
By the time a horse is rearing, biting or bucking, it is
literally screaming out for help,"
Sarah,
Debbie and Maya's belief that non-abusive methods can benefit
every horse has been backed up time and again by an extensive
catalogue of success stories. Their credits include helping
a race horse to develop from also-ran to winner, restoring
the confidence of horses that would spook in traffic, tackling
remedial problems, ironing out long established traits,
training point-to-pointers and hunters and starting numerous
young horses.

National
Business Awards
Blue Chip performed in a highlt creditable manner
in their section of the National Business Awards,
being one of four runners-up for the Supply Chain
Strategy Award Though frustrated to have come so tantalisingly
close to victory, Blue Chip's achievement was put
into perspective by the fact that the winning company
for their category of Supply Chain Strategy of the
Year, has a logistical business spanning 2 continents
with a £1bn turnover, government contracts and
34 depots. Blue Chip also fought off competition from
the likes of British Airports Authority which runs
7 airports with a turnover of £2bn.
This inaugural award ceremony, sponsored by Orange
and held at the London Hilton on 29 October, was a
glittering affair described by Chancellor of the Exchequer
Gordon Brown as "the Oscars of the business world"
in his opening video address.

Launched
at the British Equine Event: The New Marquis Supergrip
The new Marquis Supergrip hoof boot, launched at the
2002 British Equine Event is something sure to revolutionise
the protection of horses' hooves.
The
patented Marquis Supergrip hoof boots are the first
realistic alternative to nailing lumps of metal to a
horse's hoof. Why would you want to replace metal nail
on shoes? Well, metal shoes only protect the hoof wall
- not the sole or delicate frog, the repeated insertion
and removal of nails can degrade the hoof wall and raising
the hoof off the ground reduces the all important frog
pressure, reducing lower limb circulation that may lead
to problems. |
A
German vet, in conjunction with a specialist equine biomechanics
scientist developed a wireless computer system to measure
the forces and action of horses' limbs in all conditions.
They used this data to develop over a period of ten years
what is now the Marquis Supergrip. All this scientific research
has resulted in a boot that not only protects the entire
hoof - it also ensures a limb action carefully matched to
that of a bare-hoof
The
boots are suitable for all types of work, from occasional,
gentle hacking out to the rigours of all kinds of competition
at the highest level (including show-jumping, eventing and
endurance).

Hill International Completes Record-Breaking Weekend
Fair
Hill, MDOctober 29, 2002 A record crowd of over
18,000 spectators turned out at the 2002 Fair Hill International
in Fair Hill, MD, to enjoy the excitement of world-class
equestrian competition that featured the United States Equestrian
Team (USET) Eventing Three-Star Fall Championship, the USA
National Single Horse Driving Championship and the final
legs of both the FEI North American Driving Challenge and
the Triple Crown of Combined Driving, presented by Driving
Essentials/Glinkowski Carriages.
The
weekend proved memorable for Sydney Olympic Gold Medalist
David OConnor of The Plains, VA, who made his last
appearance with his long-time partner, Custom Made, owned
by Xandarius LLC. OConnor and Custom Made topped a
starting field of seventy-eight eventing riders that included
riders from Australia, Belgium, Canada, Pakistan, The Netherlands,
and the United States, winning the Fair Hill Internationals
CCI*** and the USET Eventing Three-Star Fall Championship.
On
the final day of competition, OConnors 4 fault
performance in the show jumping phase gave him an overall
score of 48.61 penalties to earn him the USET Championship
title for the second consecutive year and sixth time overall
(1993, 1995, 1997, 1999, 2001).
This
was really an amazing weekend for me, said OConnor
who won the Championship last year on The Native. Its
been a storybook career with Custom Made and all I really
wanted was for him to have a great weekend and go out in
good form. The fact that it happened like this is a dream,
OConnor said of his experience at Fair Hill.

Squad Named For Inaugural Polocrosse World Cup
With
membership of the UK Polocrosse Association leaping
from 250 to more than 400 in the last two years, three
new clubs opening this year and 2003 heralding the
first ever Polocrosse World Cup, now is an exciting
time to be playing polocrosse.
Nations
competing in the first ever World Cup, to be held
in April/May in Warwick, Queensland, are expected
to be Australia (which has almost 4,000 players),
New Zealand, South Africa, Zimbabwe, USA, Canada,
Ireland and the UK. Australian clubs will provide
ponies for all visiting teams. International tours
by our players this year include a Ladies' tour to
the USA in May and an Under 21s mixed tour to South
Africa in July.
|
A
fuller season than ever was played from April to September
this year, with record turnouts at almost every weekend
tournament and high attendance at the week-long training
courses. A winter league, using covered arenas, is now running
for the first time, which will enable year-round play nationwide.
A thriving pony club polocrosse scene is bringing more and
more young players into the game.
The
sport is considerably cheaper than polo, with each player
needing only one pony. Teams of six are split in two, playing
alternate chukkas of three against three, enabling horses
to be rested between chukkas. The field is about the size
of a rugby pitch, in comparison with a polo ground, into
which several football fields fit.

Lightweight

Robert Lemieux bought an Armadillo Airotec Saddle Pad
at from the Armadillo stand at Burghley this year. Tested

says "I would absolutely not be without my Armadillo

Robert had a fantastic Blenheim, rising from 60th after
the dressage to finish 11th on his new ride Ivor Mission.
Former British National Champion before riding for Canada,
Robert hung up his professional boots in 1997. Now aiming
for Badminton CCI*** and the Pan American Games in October
2003 Robert and Ivor Mission are looking towards the
Olympic Games in Athens 2004. |
Much
lighter than most saddle pads, riders have found outstanding
results from using the Armadillo Airotec Saddle Pad. The
unique design combines superb shock absorbency with Stomatex,
a high-performance, anti-sweat fabric, keeping your horse
cool and comfortable. The pad actually PUMPS the air and
sweat away from the horse.

Riders With Disabilities Gain Valuable Experience at Belgium
Championships
Kingston,
RIOctober 28, 2002Three U.S. dressage riders
with physical disabilities competed at the Open Belgium
Championships on October 5-6, 2002 in Moorseles, Belgium.
The riders all performed well and gained valuable international
experience.
With
assistance from the National Disability Sports Alliance
(NDSA), the U.S. riders -- Rebecca Hart of Erie, PA; Barbara
Grassmyer of Placerville, CA; and Kebbie Cannon of Mineral
Springs, NC traveled to Belgium where they faced
stiff competition during the two-day international event
for riders with physical disabilities. The event attracted
more than 40 riders representing 13 countries. Among the
top equestrians competing at this event were Anne Sticker
of Germany riding her horse My Melodie FRH, and Ineke De
Groot of The Netherlands on her mount, Ivox.
To
ensure fair competition in an event such as this, riders
are categorized in Grades I-IV according to their disabilities
and follow rules set by the International Paralympic Equestrian
Committee (IPEC). Grade 1 is for those with the most severe
disabilities; Grade IV is for those with the least. The
Individual Championship test for each grade is similar to
the grand prix for able-bodied equestrians -- the highest
level to achieve.

Stable
Comfort
The
Stable Comfort mattress is a revolutionary new flooring
product to come on to the UK market. It has been well
established both in Canada and the USA.
Stable
Comfort provides unsurpassed horse comfort, is equivalent
to 4" bedding and is a completely different product
to the range of mats currently available.
Traditional
stable floors are hard and unforgiving, requiring several
inches of bedding to create a suitable environment.
This amount of bedding can intensify dust-related health
problems, is very costly and labour intensive and takes
up valuable time that could be spent working with your
horse rather than for your horse. |
Stable
Comfort has been designed to feel like natural pasture,
providing the ideal surface for your horse's comfort and
well-being. It is a patented, multi-celled mattress, filled
with uniformly-sized rubber crumb. The mattresses are placed
wall-to-wall in the stable, covered with a durable top cover
and securely fastened to the walls, creating a one-piece,
full coverage floor. The non-organic system inhibits the
production of bacteria, preventing odour build up. Stable
Comfort can be installed over any existing floor and can
be taken up and used again, saving time, energy and money.
There
are numerous benefits for horse and owner on fitting Stable
Comfort. Horses with various medical conditions including
arthritis, laminitis, navicular and even broken bones have
shown dramatic improvements on Stable Comfort. They are
getting the softness and cushioning that they need and with
the traction of the mattress are able to lie down and rise
again easily. One owner with an in foal mare with a broken
hock stated 'Stable Comfort saved my mare's life, by allowing
her the time needed to recover, her leg to heal and to produce
a healthy foal, although the vet predicted she would not
survive.'
The
considerable reduction in bedding saves staffing costs and
space, solving disposal and storage problems without sacrificing
horse comfort

A
Healing Hand For The Horses Of The Goddess
This month thousands of poor Indian families
arrived with their horses and donkeys in Jaipur at the
temple of the Hindu goddess Kalkani Matha - the goddess
of equines - for a dramatic 300-year old festival.
For the people, the colourful annual celebration is
always a welcome break from grinding poverty. For their
animals all too often it means exhaustion and suffering
- but this time teams vets from the British-based charity
Brooke Hospital for Animals were standing by to offer
free treatment, advice and training in equine care. |
Horses
and foals, some taken from their mothers only days after
birth, arrived by truck. Donkeys arrived on foot, malnourished
and often lame, accompanied by their owners or donkey dealers
from poor villages.
The festival takes place at Luniyawaas, a village 30 km
from Jaipur, India, on the Hindu festival of Dussehra, just
before Diwali. The fair is a tradition passed from generation
to generation of equine owners.
Joy Pritchard, Brooke's Veterinary Advisor has just returned
to the UK from the fair, and reported a growing problem.
Dealers now offer dozens of foals, taken abruptly from their
mothers, for sale to anyone who will pay the price. Pritchard
recalls "Foals, some as young as 15 days old, barely
able to survive without their mothers' milk, are tied up
side by side in long lines. They have no choice but to nibble
at the piles of dried grass placed in front of them, or
chew in vain at each other's manes. When the sun moves round
from behind the temple where they are tied, there is no
respite from the heat and dust except a quick drink of water
given whenever the owner remembers them. All to often they
are forgotten. We wormed all the foals, treated wounds and
tried to put pressure on the dealers to offer water more
frequently.
The
foals are Rajasthan's famous Marwari breed, bays and prized
skewbalds, with curved ear tips. The lucky ones will be
bought outright. Others will be bought by speculators or
even 'in bulk' by a middle-man, to be re-sold at the same
trading fair or, worse still, packed into lorries and moved
on around the state from sale to sale. Under these conditions
many will die from malnutrition, poor immunity, diseases
caught from so many other stressed foals, or fractures and
injuries sustained during transport.

****
Those horse lovers who are saddened by the fact that Dick
Francis will no longer be writing his wonderful horse-related
mysteries will be interested in a new mystery/suspense novel,
At Risk, by Kit Ehrman, ISBN: 1-59058-036-2.
A

pride. And Stephen Cline will pay heavily for both when

and takes a job as barn manager at Foxdale Farm, one of
Marylands prestigious equestrian facilities.
In
this pastoral setting, where greed, lust, and jealousy simmer
beneath the surface, Steve must draw upon every ounce of
skill and courage when hes hijacked early one morning
along with some of the stables horses. When the police
investigation stalls, Steve uses his connections within
the horse industry and launches his own fact-finding campaign.

the thefts, he becomes a killers target in an environment
where everyone, no matter how innocent, courts risks . .

How
Equine Reiki Helped Cloudy
Cloudy
for me was by no means an unusual case. Until recently he
had been at a very good and professionally run riding school.
However, he had picked up an injury that had rendered him
unable to work and the owner had sent him away for a bit
of rest and recuperation to see if it would help. I first
saw him when he had been resting for 3 weeks. The owner
had come to the conclusion that cloudy was not happy in
the riding school and thought he would be better off in
a private home.
There
were several things that were apparent about Cloudy.
1. There was a "stirring" action with the right
hind leg that would have made it impossible to pass a vetting.
2. He was roach backed.
3. He could not cross through when spun in a circle in either
direction.
4. He could not stand with his hind legs square.
5. He seemed generally quite depressed despite the 3 weeks
of freedom.

After finishing Saturdays cross country with a two-phase
total of 44.61 penalties, OConnor finished Sundays
concluding stadium jumping phase with four penalties and
a three-phase score of 48.61 for an improbable repeat of
the dramatic farewell appearance of one of his earlier successful
mounts, Wilton Fair, whom OConnor rode to the Fair
Hill Championship in the horses final appearance in
1993.
This
was really an amazing weekend for me, said OConnor
who won the Championship last year on The Native. Its
been a storybook career with Custom Made and all I really
wanted was for him to have a great weekend and go out in
good form. The fact that it happened like this is a dream.
For us to win, well, I was lucky enough to have it happen
with Wilton Fair, to have it happen again is way more than
I had any right to hope for.

Guidelines
For Horse Association Management
Where
would we all be in the horse industry without our favorite
horse association? Membership in breed, performance, or
professional associations allows us all to do more than
we could do on our own. Some associations have paid staff
that assist in accomplishing organization goals. Most associations
rely on volunteers for part of the work, and many are run
entirely by volunteers. You've probably noticed that your
association goes through strong and weak periods. By taking
a look at the nuts and bolts of association management,
you can assess and work to improve our own favorite.
Association
survival - The best way to insure association survival and
success is to get people to work harmoniously together over
long periods of time. This is easier said than done. Two
problem areas that can disrupt this are: rules of order
and minute taking. Rules of order provide a framework to
ensure that fairplay" is provided for all in the room;
only one issue is considered at a time; free and full discussion
is provided for every proposition; minority position(s)
are heard; after discussion and vote the position of the
majority must rule. Regarding minute taking, minutes need
to be concise and to the point. They don't need to detail
every single quote and who said it. Motions made must be
recorded accurately however, along with you made the motion,
who seconded, and vote outcome.

Three-Time
Swedish National Dressage Champion Coming to the United
States
Los Angeles, October 25, 2002-- D.B. Enterprises announced
today the purchase of three-time Swedish national
dressage champion, Tip Top. While owned, trained,
and ridden by five-time Olympian Kyra Kyrklund, Tip
Top became the only horse to win the four-, five-,
and six-year-old National Young Horse Championships,
earning a one million Swedish Crown bonus for Kyrklund.
The bay stallion will soon arrive in the United States
for breeding duties and to be trained and ridden by
Los Angeles-based U.S. dressage champion Leslie Morse
|
.
"Tip Top is an amazing horse," said Ms. Kyrklund.
"Winning the Swedish national championships not once
but three times requires not just an athletic horse, but
one who thrives on the show atmosphere and rises to meet
the challenges of the world's best competition."
In addition to his exceptional show record, Tip Top is impeccably
bred and scored extremely well at his Swedish stallion inspections.
A well-proportioned horse, Tip Top earned all eights and
nines on conformation during his stallion inspections, as
well as an eight on the walk, a nine of the trot, and an
unprecedented ten on his canter. His rideability score was
nine.
