Plans
are progressing for the 2002 Bowmore Blair Castle International
Horse Trials and Country Fair – August 22nd to 25th.
Director,
Sarah Phillips, who joined the team at Blair in March is
settling in. She said, "I am beginning to put faces to names
now and it is great to be working with such an enthusiastic
team. We are building on the success of previous events
and I am convinced this year will be bigger and better than
ever."
The
CCI one star and two star classes are at the top of the
list for many top international riders with young horses
to bring on. Indeed several young horses which cut their
teeth at Blair Castle, went on to much greater things, such
as Blyth Tait’s Ready Teddy and Chris Bartle’s Word Perfect.
Entries are expected to be at their maximum again this year.

The
Chilcotin Mountain Horse Trek Challenge
British Columbia, Canada
I saw an editorial in one of our Equestrian trade magazines
seeking PIONEERS ! Intrigued I rang for details and discovered
an opportunity to help a charity for which I have always
had a soft spot- Guide Dogs for the Blind Association. Further
enquiries now mean that I am to embark on a very challenging
trek through the Columbian mountains. Amenities will be
basic and we will have to carry everything needed for the
entire trek on packhorses.
However
before that I have to raise a considerable sum of money
for the guide dogs. It costs £10 per day to train
and support a Guide dog partnership all from voluntary contributions.
There are over 5000 guide dog partnerships in the UK as
well as the other services provided to visually impaired
people. All the money I raise for the challenge will go
to the charity. (Only 4p in the £ is taken for administration)
I am doing several fundraising events including a sponsored
ride and a dog show. This is hard work but very rewarding.
Many
of our Equestrian wholesalers have been extremely generous
and have donated some lovely prizes. In order to give more
people the opportunity to win I have arranged an Internet

Horse Show

NY—May 30, 2002—The 27th annual Hampton Classic
Horse Show, one of the nation’s premier show jumping

Welcomes Court Decision
Injured carriage driver get compensation
from bus company
The
Countess of Lindsay, from Upper Largo in Fife, has
been awarded compensation of £21,153 in the
Edinburgh Court of Session after a bus owned by Stagecoach
sped past her carriage spraying water over the horses,
causing them to bolt and crash head-on into a car.
Lady Lindsay suffered injuries to her arm, ankle,
pelvis and lower back, her carriage was damaged beyond
repair, and one of the horses will not be able to
work again.

When
the Procurator Fiscal decided not to press charges, Lady
Lindsay decided to sue the company for damages herself.
During the week long case, Stagecoach maintained that Lady
Lindsay contributed to the accident. They said she had a
duty to keep the carriage and horses under control.
Sheila
Hardy, head of Safety for the British Horse Society, said
"This is a wonderful result. Riders everywhere have
reason to thank Lady Lindsay for her courage in fighting
this case. It is vital that motorists understand that passing
horses at speed and too close is a recipe for disaster.
Eight riders were killed on our roads last year, and Lady
Lindsay could well have been more seriously injured. Drivers
now need to be aware that they could be successfully sued
for damages if they fail to show consideration."
She
added: "The British Horse Society is delighted that
the Court did not hold the carriage driver responsible,
nor did it agree that she was not in control because the
horses bolted. This could prove a landmark case."

Little
Bluey Saved from Life of Misery
Bluey
an emaciated 3 year old 14 hands high coloured pony
with desperately overgrown hooves is the latest arrival
at Cherry Tree Farm, the ILPH (International League
for the Protection of Horses) equine rehabilitation
and recovery centre near Lingfield in Surrey.
Discovered in squalid surroundings in a village near
Swanley, Kent, Bluey's owner, in fear of a prosecution,
signed him over to the ILPH.
Says Ian Gibbs, ILPH Cherry Tree Farm Manager, "Because
Bluey's feet were so overgrown he was walking on his
toes and this has stopped his tendons at the back
of his legs growing properly.
"He is young so we are hoping that once his feet
have been trimmed back his tendons will eventually
come right - He's a lovely little chap and he deserves
a chance in life"

are now available for purchase for the Oaks Blenheim
International CSI-A, to be held July 25-28, in San
Juan Capistrano, CA. The Oaks Blenheim International
CSI-A will be hosting the United States Equestrian
Team’s final three rounds of Show Jumping Selection
Trials for the 2002 World Equestrian Games.

This
year marks the second annual Oaks Blenheim International
CSI-A, which was the country’s first outdoor CSI-A
(international individual show jumping competition). It
is also the second time Selection Trials to determine a
USET squad are being held at the Oaks Blenheim Exhibitions
– Rancho Mission Viejo Riding Park. Selection Trials
for the USET’s Sydney Olympic squad were held at the
San Juan Capistrano venue in 2000. This year’s $175,000
Cargill Grand Prix of the United States, presented by HBO,
on Sunday, July 28, will be the final event that determines
the show jumping squad that will represent the United States
at the World Equestrian Games in Jerez, Spain in September.
Joining
this country’s top riders in the Cargill Grand Prix
will be show jumping’s reigning World Champion Rodrigo
Pessoa of Brazil, 2000 Olympic Gold Medalist Jeroen Dubbeldam
of The Netherlands, and four-time British Olympian Michael
Whitaker.

And Beudelair Top John H. Fritz Challenge
AUGUSTA,
NJ—May 30, 2002—A field of 27 entries competed
in the John H. Fritz Challenge at the 2002 Garden State
Horse Show held May 1-5 at the Sussex County Fairgrounds
in Augusta, NJ. The John H. Fritz Perpetual Trophy was presented
to Ali Wolff and her horse Beudelair.
The
class, introduced in 2001, was designed for junior and amateur
riders who compete over fences 3’–3’3”
in height. It was held following the conclusion of the Garden
State Grand Prix. The perpetual trophy was donated last
year by Mr. and Mrs. Finn M.W. Caspersen in honor of John
H. (Jack) Fritz.
Fritz
has played a key role in nearly every aspect of the equestrian
world. From founding organizations such as the United States
Combined Training Association (USCTA) and the United States
Dressage Foundation (USDF), to governing and officiating
equestrian events, Fritz has dedicated his life to promoting
equestrian sports.

event for the first time on Sunday 25 August 2002; providing

sections (25/26 August 2002); as well as providing two whole
days of cross country for spectators.
This
year’s Highclere event benefits from the increased

Casts Spotlight On Pedigree Horses
Horse
lovers with an eye for a good buy will find shm Smith Hodgkinson's
latest sale spot on.
The
valuation and sales specialist will be auctioning 29 prize-winning
Appaloosa and spotted horses at the Capitall Stud, Sceuthmyre,
Southwaite, near Carlisle.
Many
of the horses to be auctioned on Saturday 1 June are winners
in stock, hand, and show ring competitions, while others
have been sired by champion stallions. All breeds offered
in the sale are recognised by the Spotted Horse & Pony
Society (SHAPS), Appaloosa Horse Club UK (ApHCUK), and British
Spotted Pony Society (BSpPS).
The
horses will be available for inspection from 10 am on the
day of the auction. Selling starts at midday.

Clare
Bronfman Wins The Grand Prix At CSIO Rome
|
Exactly
a year to the day of winning the Grand Prix at CSI-A Eindhoven
(NED), Clare Bronfman won the Grand Prix in Rome (ITA) on
Sunday, May 26th aboard Charlton (Cavalier - Kilkenny Diamond,
King of Diamonds), a 12-year-old Irish Sport Horse gelding.
"It still hasn't sunk in, it was great, he was jumping
incredibly" said the 23-year-old Dutch based rider
who had jumped three double clear rounds. Bronfman was followed
by compatriot Laura Kraut, who had the fastest time on the
11-year-old Dutch bred gelding Anthem (Dutchboy - Ecvalan,
Triton), however a rail in the jump off cost them the class.
The two American women, in a competition dominated by men,
were the only riders who went into the jump off with double
clear rounds.
"We
were jumping strong," commented Kraut, referring to
the Nations Cup class on Friday where the team was in third
position going into the second round, "so it wasn't
too surprising that we had some really good results after
this class." However a ripped shoe forced one of the
riders to retire before completing the second round of the
Nations Cup class placing the team, which finished 6th,
at a disadvantage.

the North American Young Riders' Championships (NAYRC),

Old Mill Creek, IL on August 6 – 11, 2002, Young

North American Young Riders' Championships, presented by
State Line Tack, is the premier equestrian competition
in North America for Young Riders, age 16-21. Young equestrians
come from the United States, Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico,
and the Caribbean Islands to vie for team and individual
Championships in the three Olympic equestrian disciplines
of Show Jumping, Dressage, and Eventing.
Many

Equestrian
Window Decorating Contest Brings Horse Show to the Sidewalks
of Lake Placid
Lake Placid, NY– May 28, 2002 – The 15th Annual
Equestrian Window Decorating Contest, held in conjunction
with the Lake Placid and I Love New York Horse Shows, June
26 – July 7 in scenic Lake Placid, NY, provides an
artist treat to shoppers and strollers in Lake Placid’s
village.
Lake
Placid village merchants showcase their “horse sense”
and artistic flair in the contest held concurrently with
the horse shows. The equestrian theme window displays are
popular with horse show participants, spectators, and shoppers
as local businesses welcome members of the horse show community
to town.
Judging
will take place during the Lake Placid Horse Show, June
26 -30 and winners will receive their awards on Wednesday,
July 3, opening day of the I Love New York Horse Show. The
winner of the annual window decorating contest receives
$100, a blue ribbon and has their name engraved on the perpetual
plaque which is displayed in the VIP Lounge during the horse
shows and in the horse show office during the year. The
runners-up each receive a commemorative T-shirt and horse

Adirondack Trading Company, the defending window decorating
champion, will face tough competition, as is the norm in
this festive town. There’s no doubt these companies
will once again try to impress the judges and the visitors

The
Samsung Nations Cup will take place on Sunday 2 June, the
1st round starting at 13:45, and the second round at 17:15.
After
CSIO Rome (ITA) last Friday, Belgium is leading the Samsung
Nations Cup standings with 25 points, followed by Germany
with 22 points and Italy with 20 points. Cian O'Connor and
Kevin Babington from Ireland and Josef Turi from Hungary
are at the Top of the Leading Rider standings with 7 points;
Carling King of Babington is the Leading Horse with 7 points.
The
Swiss TV DRS will broadcast around 5 ½ hours of CSIO
Lucerne. The Grand Prix on Friday 31 May will be transmitted
live as will the Nations Cup on Sunday 2 June. Highlights
will be on Eurosport on Saturday 8 June 09:30-10:30 and
11 June 12:00-13:00 (CET). A 1 hour programme is also scheduled
on CNBC Sport Europe on 16 June 15:00-16:00 (CET) and CNBC
Asia the same day 12:00-13:00 (HKT).

Wellington
lands National Horse Show
When every friend I have in the USA is sending me e-mails
telling me that the 119th National Horse Show (which is
the oldest indoor horse show in the USA), is to move to
Wellington in Palm Beach Florida, then you had better believe,
that's a BIG deal. The event is now to be held on Thanksgiving
weekend, running from Nov. 26, through Dec. 1, and will
include the traditional Maclay National Championship for
junior riders.
The Madison Square Garden Show officials who are responsible
for the future success of the show made their decision after
careful consideration of the problems and restrictions involved
with staying at the old venue. I personally hope that the
move is well received by competitors and those who support
them. Knowing the showground, the facilities and Gene Misch
quite well I can assure those who are doubtful that the
new venue and the staff who run the facility are nothing
short of superb and quite professionals.

Possible
Causes and Prevention of Equine Entroliths (intestinal stones)
One of the primary issues when addressing diet and hind
gut function is the hay to grain ratio. The control of pH
within certain limits is essential. Excess grain in the
hind gut can cause founder and colic. When excess grain
is fed, more starch reaches the hind gut and the fermentation
of the starch decreases the pH (makes the gut content more
acid).
On the other hand, chronic alkalosis could increase the
incidence of enteroliths (intestinal stones). Several other
factors, however, such as the intakes of magnesium, phosphorous
and nitrogen, presence of a nidus (a foreign body such as
a stone), breed of horse, and alfalfa intake may also be
associated with enteroliths.
The intakes of magnesium, phosphorous and nitrogen are of
interest because the majority of enteroliths are struvite,
a material composed of the above three elements. Struvite
is more likely to be formed in a pH of 6.5 or higher. This
is why the pH of the hind gut is a factor.
