Samsung Nations Cup Rome (Ita) 24 May 2002

Eight Teams will compete at the legendary Piazza di Siena: Belgium, France, Germany, Colombia, Sweden, Italy, the Netherlands and USA.

The host team will be composed of Roberto Arioldi, Gianni Govoni, Massimo Grossato and Jerry Smit.

The Nations Cup will be held on Friday 24 May. The 1st round will start at 15.30 and the 2nd round at 17.35 to finish at 18.50. The course designer is Uliano Vezzali (ITA)
The second round will be taken up live on RAI 3 from 18.00 - 18.50.

Eurosport will show a one hour edited programme (Highlights) on 29 May 9:30-10:30 and 1 June 8:30. CNBC Europe will show highlights on 9 June from 15:00 to 16:00.
After CSIO La Baule (FRA), Germany leads the standings with 22 points ahead of Belgium (20 points) and Italy (13 points).

Meeting of The Jumping Committee

The FEI Jumping Committee held its annual statutory meeting on the 6 May 2002 in Leipzig (GER) following the Jumping World Cup Final.

Among the items on the agenda for discussion were the following:

Nations Cup
The Committee confirmed its support for the intended introduction of the Nations Cup Super League in 2003. It also confirmed the main decisions taken by the 2001 General Assembly in relation to the Super League as published in FEI Bulletin 4/2001 (eight countries, eight teams not necessarily linked).

In relation to the selection of the eight Super League teams, the Committee decided to introduce a small alteration to the selection procedure. This was felt to be necessary as the 2002 Samsung Nations Cup World Final takes place earlier than usual. Consequently, all three and four-star Nations Cup competitions in 2002, excluding the Samsung Nations Cup World Cup Final, beginning with CSIO Wellington (USA) and ending with CSIO Athens (GRE) in October will count for the selection of the eight Super League teams. The team competition at the 2002 WEG will also count.

The 2001/2002 Samsung Nations Cup series point system will apply for the 2002 Nations Cup competitions commencing with CSIO Wellington (USA) and finishing with Athens (GRE) for the purpose of selecting the eight Super League teams.

The following points will be given to teams placed at the 2002 WEG and to the teams classified from 1st to 10th following CSIO Athens (GRE).

Series
The FEI Jumping Committee together with the FEI Strategic Planning Committee created a small FEI Working Group to examine the situation in relation to various series currently being organised with a mandate to produce a paper for consideration within the next six months.

CSI Categorisation
The FEI Executive Board will be asked for its approval to introduce a CSI five-star categorisation system based on prize money to be introduced for the 2003 season. Additional requirements in relation to the categorisation system will be considered during the course of 2002 by an FEI Working Group.

National Championships
The Committee decided that the FEI decision in relation to establishing a fixed date free of international Jumping events in Western Europe to allow National Federations to hold their National Championship would be upheld. However, a different date will be sought.

Grand Prix Competitions
Beginning in 2003 only one competition at each event may carry the name “Grand Prix”.

If no competition at an international event has the title “Grand Prix” the highest prize money competition must be run according to one of the formula for Grand Prix competitions. This, of course, excludes, Derbies, Six bar and Puissance competitions.

Italy Supreme At CRIO Reggio Emilia (Ita) 15-19 May

On Saturday, 18 May afternoon all the twelve teams looking to qualify for the World Equestrian Games paraded together under one flag: the “world reining flag²” Once again the stands were filled with reining enthusiasts cheering the riders from all over Europe and the Middle East .

Team Italy once again won Nations Cup after a tight battle with Team Austria who took the silver. Marco Manzi astride Spanish Snapper (Snapper Cal Bar x Zips Shady Lady) was the first to run for Team Italy and scored a 216, the highest score of the first cut which also earned him the individual silver a half point ahead of Austria’s Dennis Schulz riding Arc Turn Into The Top. In the second cut, Rudy Kronsteiner from Austria, astride Jacs On Top (Hollywood Jac 86 x Caramel Cody) won the individual classification after scoring a 221,5 in the first go, here scoring an exciting 221 with the 11 year old stallion.

Adriano Meacci for Italy astride Jodie Tamara (Jodies Doc Tari x Skip Tamara) contributed in keeping the score high for the home team with a 215 which earned him the individual third place. Austria’s Tina Kunster and Van Bar Five (Pepper Pride x Van Bar Sangiorgio) kept the suspense up after unfortunately scoring a 0. Italian rider Dario Carmignani, third to show for the Italian Team, astride Frozen Sailor (Sir Jac Frost x Sail On Sweetness) kept the run for first open after scoring a 199 due to a major penalty but Nicola Cordioli and RS Little Red Jaba (Genuine Redskin x Docs Jabalina) determined the win by scoring a 218 after Christian Mantler for Austria with Mr Red Peppy Delmaso finished his run with a 204,5.

Rudy Kronsteiner, winner of both rounds, was just as thrilled with his win: “Jacs On Top is just a great horse! Even though he has been shown a lot and has obtained many prestigious titles, he is such an athletic horse and has such a great mind that whatever you ask him to do he just does. This is a double win for our team and it’s just fantastic.”

The third place went to Team Germany and a total score of 1275.

Also qualifying for Jerez de la Frontera are Team Great Britain, third in the first go round, and the all lady Team Switzerland who remounted from sixth place in the first go round to fifth in the second.

Six Individuals from NFs who have not qualified teams will be qualified to take part in the WEG 2002. The NFs of the three highest placed individuals from the CRIO at Reggio Emilia were Franck Perret of France, Peter Ljungberg of Sweden and Jolande Van de Valk of the Netherlands.


Endurance Test event for WEG 2002

The Endurance Trial ride for WEG 2002 was held in Jerez on the 27th April 2002. 140 horses and riders took part from all over the world and they were supplemented with many observers keen to see the course for the WEG.

Unfortunately the ride exposed a number of organisational problems for the discipline of Endurance and major work is now underway to rectify the situation. These will include a revision of the course, changes to the Vet gate area and a general review of the organisation. Further to a debriefing which took place the following day, the FEI Endurance Committee is confident that the actions taken will ensure a successful event in September 2002.

Antonio Ortiz, General Manager of Jerez 2002 WEG Organizing Committee commented on the Endurance Test Event as follows: 'We are aware that the Endurance test event we ran in Jerez had some major problems, however the reason why you run a test is to verify organization and all operations, and to change plans according to the result of the test. I believe that right at the end of the event we had a clear picture of what needed to be changed for WEG and now I feel that we can expect the Endurance World Championships to be a top event next September'.


CDIO** Józefin (POL)

The first CDIO in the capital of Poland, Warsaw, took place from 3 to 5 May. Scheduled for 2001, the event had to be cancelled due to the Foot and Mouth disease which affected Europe last year.

The show was run on the facilities of the Riding Club Aromer, which offered optimal conditions for the riders, their horses and the spectators. Two full size indoor arenas, two outdoor arenas and 200 permanent boxes were available.

Under a fantastic blue sky, 42 riders with 59 horses representing 12 nations competed in Józefin. The host country was represented by 8 riders with 11 horses. Seven classes were organised including a competition.

Germany won the team competition of Saturday with a total of 5118 points ahead of Austria (5018) and Sweden (5001).

U.Schwanz (GER) on Ryco won the Grand Prix, N. Statdlinger/Egalite (AUT) won the Grand Prix Special and S. Gielen/Chasmir (SWE) the Kür on Sunday.


This Weekend: CCI*** / Saumur - 23 to 26 May

75 riders from 17 nations have confirmed their participation to CCI*** Saumur (FRA).
World title holder Blyth Tait (NZL) and Lily the Pink will participate, as will his fellow countryman Andrew Nicholson entered with three horses. The double European Champion Pippa Funnel (GBR), who won Badminton CCI**** two weeks ago, will be the great favourite.

Twist la Beige of Jean-Louis Bigot (FRA) will officially retire from the competition at 17 years old, after an exceptional career.

The French cable TV Equidia, will have a special 90 minutes programme with the best moments of the cross country on Saturday evening at 21:00.

90 Veteran Riders At La Baule (Fra): 1st Victory For A Lady

For the first time of the season, Germany had to leave a nations’ cup victory to another country and could even not reach a place on the podium! One week after the French CSIO, the European veterans (130 horses and 90 riders) had the opportunity to ride on the grass of these wonderful facilities.

In the Grand Prix, the supremacy was feminine with the victory of the Pat Crann/Milette (GBR), who was more than 4 seconds faster than Rony Deloof/Conjamo (BEL) in a jump-off where the 3rd competitor, the Swiss Luigi Baleri on Belem du Garun had one fence down.

The Nations Cup was won by Switzerland (Theo Muff, Karl Burckhardt, Eva Ernst, Luigi Baleri).

The last two events before the 2nd European Championship to be held in Frauenfeld (SUI) from 18 to 21 July will be Grefrath (GER) from 6 to 9 June and Karlsruhe (GER), from 20 to 23 June.
