British
Invasion as Pippa Funnell Overtakes the Lead at Rolex
Kentucky Three-Day Event, Presented By Bayer, April 2427
Lexington,
KYApril 25, 2003A change in the leader board
saw three new faces at the top of the standings at the 2003
Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event, Presented by Bayer, held
at Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, KY.
Following
the conclusion of the opening phase of dressage, two-time
European Champion Pippa Funnell and her mount, Primmores
Pride, topped the 55-horse starting field with a score of
38.6 penalty points. Funnell has developed the 10-year-old
English thoroughbred gelding since his owners, Roger and
Denise Lincoln, purchased him as a yearling.
I
think this horse is a good example of a British eventing
horse, noted Funnell, 33. Hes only going
to get stronger and improve physically over time.
William
Fox-Pitt, who finished fourth at the 2002 Rolex Kentucky
Three-Day Event riding Stunning, is currently in second
position with the Irish-bred Moon Man following a dressage
score of 42.6 penalty points.
I
am very uncomfortable being in this position, I wish I was
10 or 15 points ahead of William! joked Funnell.
Fellow
British competitor Polly Stockton, 29, was leading following
the opening phase of dressage on Thursday but fell to fourth
position with her score of 43.4 penalty points earned aboard
Tangleman.
Breaking
up the British domination was Amy Tryon of Redmond, WA,
who moved into third position with a score of 43 penalty
points riding My Beau, a 13-year-old Canadian thoroughbred
gelding. 2003 marks the pairs fourth time competing
at the Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event.

Survival
Campaign for the Cleveland Bay
AS
the breeding season gets underway, concerns over the future
of the Cleveland Bay have prompted an appeal by its Society
to encourage all pure bred mare owners to breed only to
pure-bred stallions.
The Cleveland Bay features on the Rare Breeds Survival Trust's
'Critical' list. In 2001, only 39 foals were registered
with only 14 of these being fillies.Numbers prior to 2000
had been approaching 80 per year on average but the sudden
decline has been a major cause for concern.
Registrations in 2002 were again well below the average.
Some of this may be attributable to the F&M epidemic
when mares were not travelled to stallions.
Worldwide there are only 400 pure-bred mares of breeding
age but over half of these have never bred a pure Cleveland
Bay foal.
The owners of all pure bred mares are the target of the
Cleveland Society's campaign. "We do not face the future
with optimism," says President Charles Medforth. "I
would like to see every member with a mare trying to breed
a pure bred foal.
To encourage the breeding and registering of pure bred foals
the CBHS in conjunction with the Horse Race Betting Levy
Board have increased the premium to £200 for each
pure bred foal registered.

An
Alternative Approach To Intestinal Parasite (Worm) Control
In Your Horse
How
do you know my horse has worms? How are you sure that the
deworming medication got rid of the worms my horse had?
These were the 2 most often asked questions by owners when
I routinely dewormed their horses. The answer to these 2
questions was always the same, the company that manufactures
the deworming medication says they do and also assures us
that their medication got rid of them. Horsemen's Laboratory
was created to give horse owners a much more convenient,
accurate and reliable answer to these 2 questions than was
previously available.
Have
you ever wondered if your horse is really harboring those
dreaded enemies the worms? After 18 years of routinely deworming
horses and answering the above 2 questions over and over
I rediscovered something that has changed the way I look
at the routine deworming schedule. As an equine veterinarian,
I started checking the stool of all the horses I was treating
on the every 2-month routine deworming schedule. This research
revealed that less than 1 out of 10 of the horses in my
practice was passing worm eggs, the best indication that
they were not infected with adult worms.
Therefore,
after consulting with veterinarians that specialize in equine
intestinal parasitology, I decided to do something revolutionary.
Horsemen's Laboratory was started to give horse owners an
alternative to the routine deworming schedule. Our goal
is to take the guesswork out of deworming programs. Horsemen's
Laboratory provides horse owners with postage paid kits
to mail their horse's fecal samples to the laboratory. When
Horsemen's Laboratory receives these samples, a microscopic
examination is performed on each of them and the results
are mailed, emailed, or faxed to the owners.
Horsemen's
Laboratory has a program where by our clients, whose horses
are negative for evidence of worms, are mailed a reminder
and kits to recheck their horses every 3 months. When a
horse's fecal sample contains worm eggs, the results identifying
the type of worm are sent with a recommendation to deworm
the horse. A new kit is included with the results so the
owner can recheck the horse 3 weeks after deworming to insure
that the treatment was effective. Treatment is considered
successful when there is a 90% drop in the number of eggs
per gram of feces following treatment.
Why is it important to know how many worm eggs are in a
horse's stool sample? Please

USA
Equestrian 2002 Horse of the Year Awards
Forty Arabians, Half-Arabians and Anglo-Arabians earned
USA Equestrian 2002 awards, including 34 Horse of the Year
Awards, five Grand Champion Awards and an Arabian Leading
Sire Award. Included in this years championship roster
was the Grand Champion Half-Arabian MS Scarlette+//, Grand
Champion Arabian Vivacious Leigh+/, Leading Arabian Sire
Desperado V and Grand Champion Arabian Gelding MFA Maverick+//.
It
was a year marked with triumph, not just for the USA Equestrian
award, but for the fact that Brianne Walker Parsons and
her Half-Arabian mare MS Scarlette+// (Red Tape+// x Countess
Vanessa) were able to show together again.
In
the spring of 2001, 19-year-old Parsons was diagnosed with
a rare pituitary tumor that threatened not only her ability
to continue showing but her life. The tumor that severely
impaired her eyesight and left her sleeping 18 hours a day
forced her to stop riding and leave college. An operation
in June of 2001 found two distinct tumors, one of which
contained cancerous cells.
Scarlette+//
was the one thing that kept me going throughout my treatments.
Each day I could handle it, my parents drove me up to the
barn to see her against doctors orders specifying
that I should not travel more than 30 minutes from a hospital.
My parents knew how important it was for me to see her,
recollects Parsons.

discussed with the ILPH our wish for a lasting memory
for Helen and it has been decided that a stable at
Belwade Farm, their equine recovery and rehabilitation
centre at Aboyne, should be dedicated in memory of
Helen."

Event, Presented by Bayer, at the Kentucky Horse Park in
Lexington, KY.
Riding
the English-bred Tangleman, Stockton rose to the top of
the field with a score of 43.40 penalty points.
I
have been riding Tangleman for almost two years, I took
over the ride when he was an eight-year-old, said
Stockton, 29, who traveled from England to participate in
the Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event for the first time in

another mount, is in third position with a score of 49.80
penalty points riding Horton Who, a 10-year-old American

Stourbridge
Horse and Owner Benefit From Physiotherapy System
A
PHYSIOTHERAPY system developed for horses has also
proved a huge success for the owner of a Holstein
stallion.
The
Equissage pad has both helped to ease Joan Mundy of
her eczema as well as improving the soundness of Feroree
a 17.3hh Holstein breeding stallion.
Said
Joan of Kinver, Stourbridge: "When I bought Feroree,
a 13-year-old old former Grade B showjumper, 18 months
ago I knew that he had damaged both his stifles -
one used to completely lock - in an accident. He was
also suffering from muscle wastage.
"Three
months after starting treatment he is not yet 100
per cent but is looking a lot stronger and is nearly
there. You can tell he is feeling better. I started
off using the pad everyday, then dropped to twice
a week.
"We are expecting Feroree, who has fantastic
action, to be sound enough to compete in the summer.
He will be ridden by my son, Timothy, an elite under
21 dressage rider who is currently training with Ferdi
Eilberg. |
"One
of our other horses a German 17.1hh four-year-old jarred
his shoulder while playing in the paddock. We used the pad
and the Equissage hand unit which did a super job of getting
him right again."
Joan,
a lupus sufferer, decided to use the pad on herself after
being taken off medication at the end of last October which
resulted in severe eczema on both legs.
"I
used it once for five minutes and the eczema disappeared.
It has never returned. At the time I thought 'in for a penny,
in for a pound'. I am over joyed."
The
Equissage pad gives a deep cycloidal massage to the whole
horse and due to the unique action of the therapy, the pad
actively improves circulation, eases and tones muscles,
and promotes lymphatic drainage.

"Hydro
Fodder Farm"
USING U.S. & CANADIAN PATENTED HYDROPONICS TECHNOLOGY
TO MEET YOUR FEEDING NEEDS
Increasing land values and unsettled climatic conditions
have made once abundant forage-growing acreage very valuable
yet highly unpredictable. GREENFIELD has developed world's
first Solar Photo Voltaic and 110/220 volt Powered Hydroponics
Greenhouse "Hydro Fodder Farm", a breakthrough
that will allow economical fodder production in even the
driest, most remote, or valuable locations.
This "Hydro Fodder Farm" is constructed of prefabricated
steel or fiberglass insulating panels, making up to the
one-ton (per day) unit portable. The "Hydro Fodder
Farm" controls the temperature and maintains a 24-hour
a day growing environment and by powering fluorescent lights
that allow photosynthesis to take place. Watering is provided
by either sprinkler or drip irrigation and requires approximately
200 US gallons or 800 liters of water daily for fodder production.
Completely self-contained and self-regulating, the greenhouse
unit automatically controls the water pump, temperature
system and photosynthetic lighting for optimum efficiency.

KL
Grand Prix, Another First For Malaysia
PM Patron, Dato' Dr. JJ Organising Chairman
Kuala Lumpur, April 21, 2003 - Malaysia scores another
first in bringing international showjumping to the region.
The world-class KL Grand Prix will make its debut at
the Putra Stadium, Bukit Jalil from October 2 to 5,
2003 where the world's top-ranked and Malaysia's best
riders will meet for the first time to compete in a
major showjumping event. |
YAB
Dato Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamad is the patron of the KL Grand
Prix and the Chairman of the KL Grand Prix Organising Committee
is YB Dato' Dr. Jamaludin Jarjis, President of the Equestrian
Association of Malaysia and Second Finance Minister.
"Having
such an important event here will undoubtedly help bring
this sport to the larger public, promote equestrian tourism
in Malaysia, and accord greater recognition to the sport
and the country. Indeed this world-class event, with the
best riders and horses from around the globe, will put Malaysia
on the equestrian map, reinforce Malaysia's reputation as
a host of great international sporting events and provide
unparalleled impetus and inspiration to our accomplished
riders and young aspiring riders to reach the top,"
said YB Dato' Hishamuddin Tun Hussein, Minister of Youth
and Sports.
"As
the only major international equestrian event in Asia, I
look forward to the KL Grand Prix becoming a vital part
of the yearly international circuit," he added
The
KL Grand Prix creates another milestone for the country
in international sporting events - from Formula 1 Racing
and Tour de Langkawi to international showjumping.
Bringing
top league showjumping to Asia has been one of the aims
of the Federation Equestre Internationale (FEI). This objective
is now realised in the KL Grand Prix - with its five-star
CSI rating, its status similar to that of Spruce Meadows,
Canada; Olympia and Hickstead in the UK; Paris, France;
and Aachen and Dortmund in Germany.

Kate
Hoey Criticizes BBC at European Dressage Launch
Kate
Hoey MP, the former Minister for Sport, has criticized the
BBC for their lack of coverage of equestrian sports during
a reception to launch the 2003 European Dressage Championships,
to be held at Hickstead in August. Commenting on the refusal
of the BBC to cover the event, she said "There are
millions of follows and participants in all branches of
equestrian sport who have a right to expect a public broadcast
service to pay more attention to minority sporting activities.
Britain has succeeded in getting this major event for the
UK and it would be very short sighted for the BBC to let
the opportunity pass of showing and supporting sport at
this world class level".
Show
Director, Dane Rawlins, confirmed that arrangements were
in place for broadcasting from the Championships. "Satellite
up-links and facilities for overseas broadcasters are already
attracting European television companies and it is a huge
disappointment that the BBC have declined to cover the event,"
he said.
However,
support has been forthcoming from UK Sport. "The £180,000
of Lottery funding that UK Sport is investing in the Championships
is a significant contribution," said John Scott, Director
of Major Events at UK Sport. "This is the second major
event that we have supported the British Equestrian Federation
with following the success of the European Show Jumping
Championships in 1999. UK Sport is keen to see Olympic sports
showcased on home soil and we are determined to use this
opportunity to stimulate the development of dressage in
this country."

World Cup Final in Las Vegas Excites the Show Jumping World
German Marcus Ehning Emerges as Champion
Las
Vegas, NVApril 22, 2003Marcus Ehning of Germany
won the 25th annual FEI Show Jumping World Cup Final when
the worlds best show jumping horses and riders met
to do battle at Budweiser World Cup 2003, April 16-20 at
the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. The international
event featured 41 riders from around the world who competed
for the prestigious title of World Cup Champion. Spectacular
presentation of the sport with laser light shows, Las Vegas
show acts, and the world-famous Budweiser Clydesdales made
the World Cup a hit with everyone.
Ehning
put in a faultess performance in the final round of Budweiser
World Cup competition on Sunday, April 20, riding his Oldenburg
mare Anka to victory. Three-time World Cup Champion Rodrigo
Pessoa of Brazil had to settle for the runner-up position
this time aboard Baloubet du Rouet, owned by Diago Pereira
Coutinho. Third went to Malin Baryard of Sweden riding Christina
Larssons H&M Butterfly Flip. The top U.S. rider
was Laura Kraut of Oconomowoc, WI, who tied for fifth aboard
Anthem, owned by the Summit Syndicate.
Ehning
received a wonderful birthday present a day late, as he
had celebrated his 29th birthday on Saturday. I cant
believe it, he said. I never thought I would
win. If you think too much about it, it can hurt you, you
need to go day to day.

Marcus
Ehning of Germany Wins Budweiser Show Jumping World Cup
Final
Las
Vegas, NVApril 20, 2003 Marcus Ehning of Germany
emerged as the 25th Show Jumping World Cup Champion with
a faultess performance on Sunday, riding his Oldenburg mare
Anka to victory at the Budweiser World Cup 2003 at the Thomas
& Mack Center in Las Vegas.
Three-time
World Cup Champion Rodrigo Pessoa of Brazil had to settle
for the runner-up position this time aboard Baloubet du

celebrated his 29th birthday on Saturday.
I
cant believe it, said Ehning. I never
thought I would win. If you think too much about it, it
can hurt you, you need to go day to day.
There
was much to think about on the final day, as competition
was extremely fierce. The top three were less than a rail
apart in placings with Ehning and Pessoa tied for second
place with two faults and Baryard in the lead with a perfect
score of zero. Ehning was the first of the top three to
go as they were riding in the reverse order of merit. Ehning,
a Sydney Olympic team Gold Medalist, went clear putting
the pressure on the top two. Pessoa did not have the same
luck as he did three years ago when he won in Las Vegas
and he had a rail down in the first round giving him a score
of six faults with only Baryard to go.
I
had a silly fault, said Pessoa. But it caught
a lot of horses.
That included Baryard who also had a rail, which moved her
down to second for the final round with a score of four
faults.

Show
Jumping - Coyle Fails In Brave Bid For World Cup Success
IT'S
NOT EVERY show jumper who gets a chance to better a
second place in the World Cup, but Trevor Coyle's brave
bid to take the crown in 2003 came to a disappointing
finish at Las Vegas today (Sunday), with a 21st place
in the final leg of the three-part Final, and a 22nd
place overall.
But
for a man written off by many as a has-been in 2000,
the comeback trail to Las Vegas has been nothing less
than spectacular. Since losing the ride on the Irish-bred
<Cruising> shortly after the so-close 1999 World
Cup bid, Coyle languished in the lower ranks of international
show jumping, until six months ago, when the wealthy
Sapersteins of California gave him the former ride of
American Ray Texel, the 12 yr old bay mare, <Fleur>.
But half-way into the World Cup season, it seemed preposterous
that the Armagh-born rider could make the cut for qualification.
Only 18 riders from Western Europe would reach Las Vegas
in April, but Coyle, with a late, and determined, campaign,
made sure he was one of them.

Las
Vegas, NV- April 19, 2003 Richard Spooner of Glendale,
CA riding Robinson, owned by the Half Moon Investment Group,
won the Grand Prix of Las Vegas at the Budweiser
World Cup in an exciting jump-off on Saturday afternoon.
The United States swept the top three in this International

Judgement, owned by Iron Spring Farm, and Peter Wylde, who

putting the pressure on the rest of the nine riders the
jump-off.
Going
first in the jump-off, I went as fast as I thought I could,
said Wylde. I have only had this horse since October
and we have only been in six shows together.
The
crowd went wild as Spooner made incredibly tight turns to
beat the clock without fault in the fast time of 29.43 seconds.

Army
Takes Honours In 2003 Kerrygold Grand Prix League
Capt
Gerry Flynn, riding the Minister for Defence's <Cruise
Hill>, snatched victory by just under one second
at the inaugural Grand Prix of the Kerrygold National
Show Jumping League at Coilog, Co. Kildare today (Sunday
April 20).
The
competition was switched from grass to sand, due to
the hardness of the ground, but winner Capt. Flynn said
the organisation and the presentation of the Coilog
event should be <a signature for all future Grands
Prix this season>. He
added: <The final round was very competitive indeed.
It was a close-run thing.>
Flynn,
with a classic double clear round, beat Michael Kearins
on <Polanski> by less than a second on time, and
also saw his Army Equitation School colleague Lt. Shane
Carey take Sixth Place with a fast round, but one fence
down.

Markus
Merschformann of Germany Wins Second Round of the Budweiser
World Cup Malin Baryard of Sweden on Top Overall
Las
Vegas, NV- April 18, 2003 Malin Baryard of Sweden
riding H&M Butterfly Flip owned by Christina Larsson
was the runner-up in the second round of Budweiser World
Cup 2003 on Friday evening, but is the overall leader going
into the Final competition at the Thomas & Mack Center
in Las Vegas. The 28-year-old had a double clear, but could
not beat the impressive time of Markus Merschformann of
Germany. Riding Camirez, owned by Gutsverwalltung Berl,
Merschformann won the class with a faultless performance
in the time of 31.60. Marcus Ehning of Germany on Anka finished
in third place also without fault, but a slower time of
34.04.
Merschformann
vastly improved over his placing of 31 in Thursdays
competition. As the first rider in the jump-off of nine,
strategy was key, but the thirty year old was only hoping
to make the top three.
I
didnt think I would win, but I thought I would finish
in the top three, said Merschformann. Last night
I thought if I could repeat yesterdays performance,
I would do it differently.

Cup Show Jumping - Coyle 21st In Rankings For Final
HE
MAY HAVE made it by the narrowest if margins, and he
may only have an outside chance of finishing anywhere
near the top, but 44 yr old Trevor Coyle from Armagh
last night in Las Vegas managed to rack up just five
faults on his American-owned mare <Fleur>, to
leave him 21st of the 28 international riders who qualify
for Sunday's third and final leg of the FEI Show Jumping
World Cup Final.
Unlike
some other competitions, qualifying riders in the final
do not start on a scratch score, but carry their faults
with them, so Trevor Coyle is entering the World Cup
arena on Sunday carrying a substantial 18 penalties.
Scoreboard leader, Swede Malin Baryard, by comparison,
has zero penalties so far, and joint second-place holders
Rodrigo Pessoa (BRA) and Marcus Ehning (GER) have just
two penalties apiece.
