The
Chill Master boot from Equitector
The
equiworld.net team were happy to be asked to review the
Chill Master boot from Equitector. The boot was tested
over the period of one year giving us the chance to
test it in all conditions from ankle deep mud and snow
to summer heat. |
The
Chill Master boot features a unique heat reflective lining
membrane which traps heat inside the boot and keeps feet
at body temperature irrespective of the weather conditions.
The boots manufacturers state that this system is effective
at temperatures down to -25 degrees - our tester did not
encounter such severe temperatures, but given the performance
of the boot we are happy to take their word for it. This
system also works in reverse to keep feet cool in warmer
weather.
We
can attest to the fact that it works! The Chill Master boot
effectively keeps feet warm in winter and cool in summer.

The
Latest In A Line Of Renowned "Horse Whisperers"
- Adam Shereston.
Doctor
Doolittle was the fabled version of the man who could
talk to the animals but in recent months the UK has
been privy to the real life version of Hugh Lofting's
central character.
Step forward, the latest in a line of renowned "Horse
Whisperers" - Adam Shereston.
There
are no rope halters or blankets involved but the 29-year-old
has employed his "gift" to help one of the
UK's top horse trainers Mark Tompkins' race horse Esperance
to reach the racecourse where he has performed with
credit. |
The
Flint Cottage Stables handler had almost given up hope that
the Bluebird colt would ever find his way behind a set of
stalls when suffering from a growth that blocked the blood
circulation to the horses left shoulder. Consultations with
international and local vets drew a blank and even calls
to Harley Street Specialists took Tompkins' two-year-old
no further down the road to recovery.
Hard as it may be to believe and, skeptics would no doubt
have a field day, but Adam was given a "signal"
that a horse was in trouble in Newmarket. A telephone call
was made with Adam offering to pick up where the problems
was an deal with it directly and on arrival at the stables
the next day he wasn't given any clues by the so far unconvinced
handler.
However, that impression was soon to change - Adam takes
up the story: "When I first see an animal I gain their
trust and then you can go from there. After making communication
I pointed straight towards his shoulders and told Mark that
was where the problem lay.

British
Horse Society welcomes Defra consultation on equine
passports
The
British Horse Society welcomes the draft legislation
on equine passports published by Defra yesterday (27
March). Equine societies and organisations have waited
months for sight of the draft and now have three months
to comment by 30 June.
The
Society said today that it needed time to assimilate
the draft document, and to consult with colleagues.
It would make further comment once the document had
been thoroughly scrutinised.

Wise
Lady Runs to Help Horses
A
Legal Executive from Farnborough is working hard to
get fit and raise funds for her run next month in
the London Marathon, all in aid of horses.
Anne Wise (54) of Peering Avenue, will be one of the
5 ILPH (International League for the Protection of
Horses) Golden Bond runners and she will need to raise
at least £1,000 in order to join thousands of
others on April 13 in London.
"It's always been my ambition," she says,
"to run a Marathon as I did some half marathons
some years ago and to be able to run in aid of worldwide
horse welfare is an extra bonus.
|
"I
am a supporter of the ILPH, but I have never done any fundraising
before, so it's proving to be quite a challenge in more
ways than one."
Anybody wishing to support Anne and the work of the ILPH,
for whom she is running exclusively, should contact her
on 01276 672953 or Mel Edwards, ILPH Support and Liaison
Officer on 0870 366 6953.

Show
Jumping - Lennon Seventh In Swedish World Cup Warm-Up
IRISH
WORLD CUP hopeful Trevor Coyle disappointed in the
World Cup Preliminary competition at Gothenburg, Sweden
tonight (Friday), when placed 43rd out of 46 starters,
finishing on a total of 14 faults with his American-owned
bay mare Portofino.
World
Champion Dermott Lennon was the best of the Irish
tonight, with a seventh place on the Irish-bred Liscalgot,
while Jessica Kurten continued her impressive run
of Top Ten placings at the Gothenburg show with the
nine yr-old Quibell, finishing in tenth.
Though
the results of tonight's World Cup Preliminary competition
do not affect World Cup points, they do determine
the order of jumping in the official World Cup competition
tomorrow (Saturday), where a good finish by Coyle
may be vital to his qualification for the World Cup
Final at Las Vegas in April. Please

News
in Equine Supplementation
Have you ever been in the jungle of Equine Nutritional Supplementation
when visiting the local tack shop and being bombarded with
1500 different containers of all shapes, forms and sizes
all promising you that theirs is the one magic powder or
juice your horse needs to stay fit and healthy?
Well, it seems to me that myself, as well as the rest of
the equine lovers out there are all victims of some fancy
sales pitches. Until recently when I came across a new product
called the "Daily Health Pack". These people have
mastered what seemed all along so obvious in creating one
consumer oriented supplement product for horses. No more
wondering what supplements to feed, no more mixing, measuring,
scooping and no more buying multiple supplements for this
"ailment" or that "ailment". No more
trying to pretend to have a degree in equine nutrition when
trying to decide which supplement ingredients I need for
my horse.

Show
Jumping - Kurten Sets Cracking Pace At Gothenburg
It
was Ireland's Jessica Kurten who set a cracking pace
at the opening day of the World Cup Show in Gothenburg,
Sweden today (Thursday), with three Top Ten places in
the three major competitions of the day.
Riding
three different horses, the ten yr-old Lady Preishammer,
the nine yr-old Quibell, and her veteran Grand Prix
horse, the 17 yr-old Paavo N, the Cullybackey-born rider
set the standard for her fellow Northern Irish riders
Trevor Coyle and World Champion Dermott Lennon to follow. |
However,
all eyes will be on Coyle this Saturday, when he jumps in
the last qualifying competition for the FEI World Cup Final
in Las Vegas in April. Currently in equal 16th place in
the Western European leaderboard, Coyle must finish in the
Top 18 if he is to be the sole Irish representative at the
Final, so points gained at Gothenburg may be vital in returning
him to the World Cup arena for the first time since 1999,
when he finished Second overall on the Irish-bred stallion
<Cruising>.

Matt
Ryan Takes a Dive for Charity!
Matt
Ryan, Triple Olympic Gold Medallist, Three-Day Eventer is
used to taking dives from horses over the years, but jumping
out of an airplane is a completely different game.
On 13th April 2003 at The Royal Airforce Sport Parachute
Association at RAF Weston on the Green in Oxfordshire, Matt
will sky dive to raise money for the Mark Davies Injured
Riders Fund.
This is no ordinary jump. Matt will jump from 10,000ft and
free fall through the air down to 5,000ft where the parachute
will be deployed and Matt will drift gracefully to safety.
Matt won't be on his own - he will be harnessed to a professional
parachute instructor, helping him complete a staggering
two mile high tandem skydive!
And Matt will be achieving an life-time ambition of his.
'I've always wanted to ski-dive and when I read about it
in Eventing Magazine, I just knew I wanted to do it!
I have raised money for the Mark Davies Injured Riders Fund
before and so already have a connection with them. Realistically,
we all know one day we could need their help - they've helped
friends of mine before. I'm really excited. It's an incredible
opportunity that I can do, whilst raising money for a charity
that is very close to my heart.'
Matt
needs your help. He needs to raise sponsorship money in
order to take part in this fantastic event. To sponsor Matt
to risk his life for charity, please call Armadillo to pledge
your support. All donations will be in aid of the Mark Davies
Injured Riders Fund.

Encouraging
Discussions with the European Commission
ILPH
representatives, Jo White, Campaigns Manager and Keith
Meldrum, Adviser on European Affairs have recently
returned from very positive discussions with EC representatives
in Brussels.
The meeting, kindly hosted and arranged by East Midlands
MEP Roger Helmer, was attended by Martin Territt of
Commissioner Byrne's cabinet and Andrea Gavinelli,
author of the report on the Review of Live Animal
Transportation, on which new EU legislation will be
based.
|
The
aims of the meeting were to discuss the progress of the
Commission's proposal to update the current Animal Transportation
Directive, to highlight ILPH concerns and to present new
recommendations for welfare improvements. ILPH emphasis
is on: " individual partitioning; " the duration
of ourneys;
" 24 hour rest on entry into the EU.
"One
of the most positive aspects to come out of the meeting,"
comments Jo White, "is the news that the Commission
is committed to single stalls/partitions as part of better
quality travelling conditions for equines. This will be
a significant welfare measure that should help to reduce
the injuries suffered by equines in transport."
Although
the Commission is against the 8 hour journey limit, the
issue of journey times is key to the new Directive, and
a reduction from the current maximum of 24 hours looks likely.

Law
Lords decision highlights the benefit of British Horse
Society membership
A
decision by the Law Lords last week (Thursday 20 March)
to dismiss an appeal by a horse owning couple after
their animals escaped from their field onto a road,
causing severe injuries to a driver when they collided
with his car, could have a major effect on insurance
cover. The decision, that the couple were liable and
now face a potentially substantial compensation claim,
has highlighted the need for effective public liability
insurance for horses, available under the British
Horse Society's Gold membership scheme.
|
The
Law Lords upheld an earlier decision in the Appeal Court
whereby, although the owners were not negligent, under the
1971 Animals Act they were deemed liable for their horses'
behaviour. Although the horses were kept in a well-fenced
field they were frightened by an unknown source and managed
to break out, fleeing onto the busy A380 Torquay to Exeter
road at midnight in August 1996. Two of the three horses
collided with vehicles, one causing the vehicle to be written
off but not causing injury to the occupants. The other horse
collided with a car driven by hotel manager Hossein Mirvahedy,
resulting in Mr Mirvahedy suffering severe facial injuries.
Both horses were killed in the collisions; the third horse
was safely caught and put in a field nearby where he was
collected the following morning by his owners.

Bob
Jeffries Partnership Training For Horse and Rider March
2003 News
We
dont break horses, we teach horses and riders to make
breakthroughs!
Article of the month: MAKING YOUR HORSE A GOOD
CITIZEN BY BOB JEFFREYS
Does
your horse evade you by raising his head when youre
trying to bridle him, or give you a dirty look when you
tighten the cinch? Does he walk into you, step on your feet,
push you around while trying to scratch his head, refuse
to let you pick up his feet, or pull you over to the next
patch of grass against your will?
If
you answered Yes! to any of the above questions,
then you need to ask yourself why you are accepting this
behavior. If your honest response is something like, Hes
so good at everything else! or He really didnt
mean it, or Its the only thing he does
wrong! then you need to know that you can and should
expect more from your horse. Good manners are an important
part of any partnership, included the one between the two
of you. Improving his manners while you feed, groom, lead
or saddle your horse will trickle up and improve
his performance under saddle, whether on the trail, or in
the show ring. Your horse can learn that you expect him
to pay attention to you whenever you are around him!
For
example, teach him to drop his head on cue and accept the
bit willingly. You can accomplish this by putting your hand
on top of your horses head (the poll), and adding
just a tad of pressure. Do not release the pressure until
the head comes down (any downward movement should earn a
release in the beginning, even one sixteenth of an inch).
Eventually as you touch the top of his head he will lower
it down to where bridling becomes easy.

Defending
Champion Molly Ashe Returns for $200,000 Budweiser American
Invitational
Tampa,
FL March 27 Show jumping rider Molly Ashe
will be feeling the pressure on Saturday evening. At Raymond
James Stadium, the $200,000 Budweiser American Invitational
will begin at 7:00 pm and Molly has won this event the last
2 years in a row.
No
one has ever won the Invitational three years in a row since
its inception in 1972. Others have tried but this is a very
difficult class and the competition is tough. Katie Monahan-Prudent
and Rodney Jenkins have each won the Invitational three
years but not consecutively. Molly would be setting a new
record for the books if she can win this year.
Molly
will have her chance as the tenth rider in the order of
go. Thirty horse and rider combinations will attempt the
Steve Stephens designed course. And all the riders with
clean first rounds will return for a timed jump off. The
horse and rider with the fastest time and least number of
penalties in the jump off will win the $60,000 first place
award.

Drug
regulations set by LSU School of Veterinary Medicine
used by horse racing commissions internationally
BATON
ROUGE The LSU School of Veterinary Medicine (SVM)
has been the drug-testing site of the Louisiana State
Racing Commission (LSRC) since 1987, and the guidelines
established by SVM pharmacologists are used throughout
the nation and in other countries.
Dr.
Charles R. Short, a professor of veterinary pharmacology
in the Department of Comparative Biomedical Sciences
at the SVM, was the first person to create a set of
guidelines that classified drugs based on their nature,
effects and use patterns and established penalties that
corresponded with the severity of the drug used. |
Shorts
first system had three levels and classified between 450
and 500 drugs. In 1990, Short presented a refined, five-tiered
system of drug classification at the 9th International Conference
of Racing Analysts and Veterinarians, which he organized
in New Orleans. Class 1 drugs are the most severe and carry
the most penalties; Class 5 drugs are the least severe and
have little effect on the horses performance. There
are currently over 750 drugs listed in the classification
system, called the Uniform Classification Guidelines for
Foreign Substances and published by the Association of Racing
Commissioners International.

Qualifier at Galway Downs will feature the new eventing
format that will be used at the 2004 Olympics in Athens,
Greece. Riders will perform their dressage test on Friday,
and on Saturday they will compete over a 38 obstacle cross
country course. The significant format change is that there
will be no roads and tracks, and no steeplechase. On Sunday
morning the horses will undergo a veterinary inspection
before competing in the final phase - show jumping. The
Galway Downs event only has competitions for individual
horses and riders. However, in the Olympics the team competition
will follow the above format. Following the stadium jumping

Herbs
'n Essences, Tinctures For The Body, Mind And Spirit
POTTSTOWN,
PA-(December 9, 2002)-Equilite, Inc. has formulated
a new breed of flower essences called Herbs'n Essences.
Herbs'n Essences is a combination of flower essences
and herbals used to help blend the diverse range of
vibrational levels in an animal's body. The herbs deal
with the physical being of the animal and the flower
essences cater to the emotional issues and conflicts
plagued by the animal. Herbs'n Essences will resonate
with all aspects of the animal.
In today's world, life is stressful for not only people
but animals as well. Animals are faced with emotional
issues that are not natural to their environment. This
all new line of flower essences will help animals deal
with such issues as extreme panic from being left alone,
jealousy and competitiveness between peers, and animals
that suffer from over anxious, workaholic behavior.

Establishing
a Proper Relationship with Equines : Part
III: Communication
TRUST
: RESPECT : CONFIDENCE : COMMUNICATION : UNDERSTANDING
Our
ability to communicate verbally is both a blessing and a
curse. Try as we will, we can not always be honest with
our words. If you doubt this, try asking ten people that
are not close to you how they are doing. The probability
is that you will not receive many honest responses. People
that are plagued with health, family, or financial problems
will generally answer "great" or "fine, how
are you?" If you were an equine, you would know the
emotional state of another being without asking.
One theory about the ability of an equine to read moods
describes this phenomenon as a "sixth sense."
Some even suggest that this is because animals have psychic
abilities. The fact that equine usually know our emotional
state as soon as we step into their world is more likely
due to their ability to read our non-verbal communication.
Our posture, movement, actions, and tone of voice project
our inner thoughts and feelings. Due to our reliance on
verbal communication, people generally ignore the non-verbal.
Equine, on the other hand, must rely on non-verbal ommunication
for survival and are more skilled at reading body language
and tone of voice than we are. A person who is out of sorts
can enter an area where equine and
people are interacting, and the entire atmosphere can change,
becoming more negative.Conversely, a person skilled at the
art of horsemanship can be present and the interaction will
become more positive. This is why a skilled clinician can
seem almost mystical. The truth is that these skills can
be taught to anyone who has the desire to learn. Unfortunately,
too often skilled clinicians teach their techniques, ignoring
the intangible skills that enable the techniques to be successful.
Years
ago, a young protégé wanted to learn how I
trained horses. This person could watch my movements and
techniques and seemingly was able to imitate them to a tee
Interestingly, although it appeared to be a duplication
of my methods, the horse's response was quite different.
After several weeks, the young man confessed that he didn't
even really like horses. The horses that he tried to work
with knew this from his non-verbal communication during
the training sessions. They did not give him respect or
trust, even though to the human eye it appeared that there
was no
difference in our training technique. Also the young man
was focusing on imitating my techniques, giving little attention
to the horse's communication. So what does this have to
do with communicating with equine? Everything. We must first
realize that communication is a two-way street. If we only
communicate our expectations to an animal and ignore what
the animal is trying to communicate to us we will have little
success.

Three
of the Four Olympic Team Members Will Compete at the $200,000
Budweiser American Invitational
Tampa,
FL March 22, 2003 Three of the Four Olympic
Team members representing the United States in 2000 will
compete on Saturday evening, March 29, in the Raymond James
Stadium in the $200,000 Budweiser American Invitational.
In 2000, the Olympic Show Jumping Team was an all-female
team. The Olympic riders competing include: Margie Goldstein
Engle, Lauren Hough and Laura Kraut
In
horse jumping competitions, unlike many other sports, men
and women compete on an equal playing field and against
one another. There is no advantage to either sex. Since
the first American Invitational in 1973, 15 men have won
a total of 16 Invitationals and 10 women have won a total
of 14 Invitationals.
Molly
Ashe, the defending Champion, won in 2001 and 2002 and will
do her best to make it three in a row. Only two other competitors
have won back-to-back victories since the inception of the
American Invitational in 1973. Molly Ashe, if she wins,
will be the first to win this prestigious event three years
consecutively.
