The Caspian Horse Today
by Elizabeth Webster (Hopstone Caspian Stud)
The Caspian is a horse, not a pony, and therefore should be viewed in the same manner as when judging a Thoroughbred, i.e. the limbs, body and head should all be in proportion to each other . The overall impression should be of a well-bred, elegant horse in miniature. The Caspian Horse is now recognised as the ancestor of one of the four main types of horse breeds. A true hot-blood, his descendants include the Arabian, for long thought to be the oldest breed, and therefore the Thoroughbred and many of our well-known native horses and ponies.
horse
As long ago as 3000 years before the birth of Christ, the peoples of the Middle East were especially fond of the small type of equid celebrated in the ancient friezes and carvings of that era. Indeed, Darius the Great, ruler of Mesopotamia around 500 BC, so favoured these courageous, swift little horses as his personal choice to draw his hunting chariot that he honoured them by having their likeness used on the royal seal (British Museum).
For many breeders their powerful combination of looks, brains, charm and character has been impossible to resist. More than a thousand registered pure-bred Caspians have been listed in the International Caspian Stud Book and crosses to mares of non-Caspian breeding have produced some spectacularly successful part-breds in many spheres and disciplines of the horse world.

horse BHS Gets Radio & TV Ads On Riding and Road Safety
The British Horse Society is delighted to announce that there are to be radio and television announcements explaining to motorists how to treat horses on the road. The "ads" are being made by the Department for Transport, Local Government and the Regions (DTLR) in response to requests by the BHS. They will be distributed to radio and television stations around the country for them to use as and when they please.
There are over 3000 accidents a year involving horses on the roads, and the BHS has been running a campaign to try and get the message over to motorists why they should pass horses wide and slow. In a survey by the BHS, 20% of riders had had an accident and a further 40% had experienced a near miss. One third of riders had been subjected to road rage.
The radio announcements have already been circulated, and the television "ads" will be shown in the Spring.

A Horse of Course with Don Blazer
You don't pull the mask off the old L one Ranger, and you don't say Silver was a weakling or had poor eyesight. And you don't call El Cid "babieca" (idiot), or express doubts about the choice of horses ridden by Emperor Hirohito of Japan, or Napoleon or Gen. Zachary Taylor.

A Horse of Course
They all rode Albinos, as did many kings, queens, knights, commanding generals and Indian chiefs. If you made disparaging remarks about their horses you might find they didn't take it kindly, and some of them could be pretty rough characters.
But to make matters worse, you'd be perpetuating the misconceptions that the albino horse is weak, has poor eyes, dies young and is white. You see, most albinos aren't.

horse Bridleway Success By BHS After 12 Years
The Government has approved the building of a bridge to enable riders, walkers and cyclists to cross the busy A34/M4 junction at Chieveley in Berkshire. The decision has come twelve years after BHS Bridleways Officer Penny Reid first put forward the case for a safe crossing of the A34 to the rights of way networks in the area.
Penny has seen the traffic on the A34 increase steadily over the years. Riders used to be able to cross the road, but when the A34 became a dual carriageway it became impossible, and the two rights of way became truncated. To the north of the junction lies the Ridgeway Downs and to the South is Snelsmore Common, and the area contains some important equestrian routes.

It Could Kill Your Horse Although It Cannot See It…
I am talking about RAGWORT. It has been said that horses can get ragwort poisoning without the plants growing in their fields. Spores or seeds or both get carried by wind from anywhere where people are irresponsible enough not to pull those plants up in their gardens or fields. Horses will inhale the seeds or spores whilst grazing and the slow process of poisoning will begin.
Now some of you might believe that ragwort poisoning can be cured and that the liver regenerates anyhow. The liver does regenerate but once it is poisoned by ragwort, the liver will NOT regenerate!

horse Rights Of Way Losing Out Says BHS
The British Horse Society has come up with disturbing evidence that money
given to local authorities to fund the implementation of the Countryside and
Rights of Way (CROW) Act is being diverted to other departments.
In September 2001 Alun Michael, Minister for Rural Affairs advised that significant additional funds would be made available to help County councils to implement Part II of the Act. At the same time DEFRA also advised that additional funds would be made available for the establishment of Local Access Forums. The money was to be included in the counties' SSA allocation. The money was not ring fenced in spite of recommendations to do so by all involved in rights of way issues including DEFRA. The Minister said he expected County Councils to allocate sufficient resources to ensure delivery.

XP Triple Action
Up to 10% less mucking out ! ….. findings show horses produce up to 10% less droppings when supplemented with Dengie XP Triple Action!….
A recent trial of Dengie's unique three-phase probiotic XP Triple, a combined yeast, nine-strain probiotic and pre-biotic, at Writtle College showed some impressive results that were greater than those previously seen by supplementing yeast alone.
" XP Triple Action significantly improved the digestion of fibre, protein, oil and certain minerals, helping the horse utilise their feed better.
" Increased the faecal pH which is likely to reflect an improved hindgut environment, that would favour the growth of 'friendly' microflora.
" Reduced faecal output by up to 10%, which basically means that you have 10% fewer droppings per day to remove! This is likely to be due to a combination of improved dropping consistency as well as the increase in total feed utilisation.

Groundbreaking Equine Industry Welfare Guidelines Compendium Launched
A growing need for the introduction of guidelines for the welfare of horses has long been recognised. A steering group, chaired by Lord Donoughue and comprising representatives from 17 equine-interested organisations was set up to address this need, resulting in the production of the Equine Industry Welfare Guidelines Compendium, which will enhance the welfare of horses, irrespective of where they are kept and how they are used.
The Compendium, funded by the Home of Rest for Horses and available free of charge, is to be launched on 21st March at the National Equine Forum. It is a guide to standards of husbandry and management, based on scientific knowledge and best practice within the industry. It provides equine welfare guidance based on the current statutory provisions and is intended neither to propose any new statutory provisions, nor to provide a complete explanation of the law relating to horses.

Study and Discussion Days with Lucinda McAlpine
April, May, June 2002
Seven years ago Lucinda McAlpine began exploring the fields of alternative therapies for her dressage horses when it seemed that their conventional training and competition regime was causing them stress. With her move to Brackenhill Stud she gradually progressed to developing a system of keeping them closer to nature and now over 35 horses are resident on the Stud all living naturally without shoes or rugs. This ongoing research project aims to find a better working partnership between horse and rider with a view to increasing longevity and eliminating 'problems' and 'problem horses'. This too has a massive impact on the issue of safety in horse management.
Through a series of study discussion days Lucinda would like to share some of her experiences and knowledge so that others may be able to see how easy it is for horses to teach us the way forward.
We have scheduled the following study days for April, May and June 2002.

Communicating By The Seat Of Your Pants
WAVERLY, WV--Sometimes a super horse appears at the events where our instructors are showing that really catches my eye. He is already such a nice mover or I can see that he has the potential for three good gaits as he progresses. The following year, however, I might not even recognize the same horse much less tag him as a rising star. His flowing
gaits have become short and choppy. His soft jaw and relaxed back are now clamped and tight.Instead of moving forward in his training, he has deteriorated. When a setback like this happens, the reason is often that his rider does not have an independent seat.
Developing a truly independent seat is the ultimate goal for a rider. It is not about looking pretty on the horse. It is about being in the right position with the right control over your own body in order to be able to communicate clearly and logically with the horse. If your horse feels the bit move in his mouth, it should be because you are deliberately asking him for a specific shape or a cadence or a degree of collection, not because you have momentarily lost your balance or have become tense somewhere in your body.
Obviously, if you are bouncing around on the horse's back or grabbing at his mouth in order to keep your balance, that "noise" is what he is going to listen to. If the way you are sitting or moving on his back creates pain or discomfort for the horse, then any communication is gone. Without an independent seat, it is impossible to properly influence the horse's mind and body in order to train it for any higher level equestrian sport from dressage to eventing or cutting or reining.
The rider must master six distinct skills as she or he develops an independent seat.

25th Mar 2002 Grow Or Die: How Change Affects Your Horse Business
Change, both planned and unplanned, is a part of the landscape for every horse business. A riding facility is likely to make daily operation policy changes as it grows. For example, perhaps when this business opened it was quite small, and so allowed people to bring their dogs. As the business grew, and the general traffic in and out of the stable increased, the initial policy contributed to disruption. Another example may be that a freelance trainer increases fees because of increases in transportation costs. The following scenario provides a more detailed look at this and how it affects the horse business.
